The author (primarily) follows three gurus: PotPieGirl, Sara Young, and Rosalind Gartner. Each has their own products designed specifically for newbie affiliate marketers and each has her own approach to maintain customer loyalty and to help newbies make money online.

In the past, the most impressive guru in terms of customer service was Sara Young. Her product approach to affiliate marketing works as long as you are diligent about maintaining your sites (in whatever form they may be).

But more recently, Rosalind Gartner, author of Super Affiliate Handbook seems to be offering stellar follow up service (after the purchase of her product).

Rosalind was ahead of the pack on the last google update that killed off so much affiliate profit. Her suggestions prompted the author to change mini-sites to maxi-sites to accommodate the new google view on content.

And there's more - Rosalind's blog post offered an alternative to Amazon to those affiliates whose accounts have been closed by Amazon because of the new CT (and other states, too, including CA) tax law. Thousands of affiliates are just out of luck for an all-purpose site to join. It's a big blow and lots of work to change out the links.

But Rosalind was there with help. And quickly. At last check (and I may be wrong) the other two haven't mentioned the tax issue.

Lately, Potpiegirl is pushing products like crazy - she is first and foremost an affiliate marketer. But between her stream of product-pushing emails followed by those of Joe Vitale (who seems to have a new product a minute), the emails are getting a might tedious.

For those of you who send out frequent product only emails - we understand the concept and we respect your opinion, but sometimes you need to let us recipients take a breath!

What To Do If Your Free Web Host Changes The Rules And Disables Your Site

There is a disadvantage to free web hosting. Companies like Squidoo and even Hubpages can dismantle your free site for any number of reasons.

As an example, I have a squidoo lens: Start An Easy Online Business. Squidoo did not delete the lens, but it might as well have done so. It changed the green check mark indicating that the lens was active to a gray minus sign which means:

This gray minus sign means your lens is not currently being featured in Squidoo, and is considered Work-In-Progress.

WIP lenses don't get promoted within Squidoo search results, and you can't join new Groups or send Squidcasts from them. The rest of the world can still see a WIP lens, of course, by visiting your link directly or finding it in search engines like Google or Yahoo.

We'd really love to promote your lens as featured as often as possible -- read up on how you can make that happen.

Please note that it can take up to 24 hours after Publishing in order to become Featured.

In this case, Squidoo changed the rules so that lenses of a certain type are just plan banned. I can edit the lens mentioned above, but I cannot publish the changes.

Obviously, Squidoo has the right to do this, but a lens that once was active with many links to it is now dead in the water.

If this were a very profitable lens, I think I might be very upset until I realized that I bought into Squidoo's control over my material. I have to locate the links to this lens and change them to something else. Otherwise, people who expect to find a lens about starting an easy online business will link to absolutely nowhere.

Bottom Line: Free hosting is great until the rules change. You have little control. Keep that in mind when you spend time using Squidoo or Hubpages.

PotPieGirl's Formula For Building Niche Sites

In case you haven't been reading this blog, Potpiegirl is THE guru who created an affiliate marketing action plan called One Week Marketing.

Click the ad on the right to get more information.

FYI, she sent out an email at the end of March detailing the how tos for building niche sites. She uses squidoo - you can use whatever site builder you want.

So here's her formula. Hope it's helpful. For some affiliates, it will suffice - you may be missing a step or two. If you need more info, check out One Week Marketing.

The formula for her niche sites is as follows:

1. Do keyword research. (Low competition, high traffic specific keywords).

2. Find 10-20 related keywords on a focused topic.

3. Get a domain name that has one of my best keywords in it.

4. Take the 5 or so best keywords and make pages out of them.

5. Take 5-10 more keywords and use them for posts.

6. Install wordpress with a clean theme and required "policy" pages.

7. Put my "page" keyword content on site as "pages."

8. Create one post with a "post keyword" and publish.

9. Make sure there is good internal linking on my little site.

10. Monetize lightly at first (AdSense and/or Amazon banner).

11. Get indexed (VERY IMPORTANT).

12. Initiate my link building system(s).

13. Let it go.

PotPieGirl's Theory On The Recent Google Content Farm Update

PotPieGirl, the author of the One Week Marketing Action Plan - the powerful affiliate marketing plan based on Squidoo, recently posted her theory on the recent Google Content Farm Update.

You know - the update that knocked out tons of marketers dependent on ezinearticles.com (EZA) for traffic. Well - turns out Squidoo (yup - it's a big content farm) did not suffer the same fate as EZA.

Why? Squidoo is very strict about what kind of content is allowed on the site. PotPieGirl mentions several saturated niches that squidoo will not allow on its site. One is weight loss topics - I know because recently I tried to build a Squidoo lens built on the keywork "diet plans to lose weight fast." Squidoo rejected my lens.

Lesson Learned - Stay away from niches that just aren't working anymore because not only is the competition overwhelming, but Google is not considering certain keywords as high priority in its current algorithm.

The Affiliate Marketer In Crisis: What Can We Do When Article Marketing Fails?

Panic has hit the world of affiliate marketers who rely heavily on article marketing.
The most recent google algorithm has decimated content sites like ezinearticles, squidoo, and hubpages.

Their traffic has skyrocketed downward. It's seemingly in free fall.

Check those keywords - if you were on page 1 of google with an ezinesarticles reference before the algorithm change, chances are you are now buried somewhere else.

So what do we do?
According to the a guru who has NOT suffered from plummeting traffic - Rosalind Gardner, author of SUPER Affiliate Handbook - if you have all your eggs in one basket (article marketing), then you are doomed to lose profit, at least for the present.

Let me remind you of a fundamental rule of investing that applies to affiliate marketing - DIVERSIFY! Us boomers who had a diversified portfolio during the last major market downturn have survived and are prospering. Thank you very much for that conservative financial planner.

How does diversification apply to affiliate marketing?

Rosalind Gardner’s SUPER Affiliate Handbook – A Priceless Tool For The Affiliate Marketer!

I don’t remember paying a whole lot for Rosalind Gardner’s SUPER Affiliate Handbook but every time I look through it for tips to design a blog or web site, or ways to keep the reader on a page to buy a product, I am amazed at the wealth of information packed into it.

Recently, I found the traffic into one of my blogs was increasing quite nicely BUT the blog was converting few visitors into buyers. In other words, I built the blog, they came, and something was driving them away before the purchase!

Since I created the blogs, my objectivity is severely impaired, so I looked in the contents of the Super Affiliate Handbook. There was a section entitled “10 Design Rules Of Thumb.”

Among the gems in this section, all backed by testing, was a very simple little fact – stick to the standard colors for a link. Just this little blunder could cause my blog readers to fail to click for the sale.

Is it a big whoop? Maybe not, but it should encourage more conversions. It’s certainly worth a try.

In the meantime, I’ll just keep reading through the 10 Design Rules Of Thumb in Rosalind Gardner’s SUPER Affiliate Handbook, looking for another gem.

If You Want To Increase Your Blog Traffic, Make Sure Your Content Is Appealing

I have several blogs and find it difficult to post as often as I would like.

But the only real way to increase blog traffic is to have a "following" (after the choice of solid keywords). And the best way to get a following is to post often with high quality information. An example - suppose you have a dog-related blog like this one: http://designerpuppys.blogspot.com/. If every post is about a new product you are trying to promote, you'll lose readers quickly. I post about the different antics of the BOYZ Simon and Alvin, and the real issues I run into with these two pampered pooches.

For example, one of the most popular series of posts on this blog is about Simon's surgery last summer for luxating patella (trick knee). I documented his progress and promoted the products I used to entertain a dog who couldn't act like a dog because he was recovering from surgery FOR 10 WEEKS!

I get a lot of material from dog forums - the most popular topics are right under your nose! Make sure you pick a forum that allows your signature to contain a blog reference. A word of caution about forums. Spam and you will be banned quicker than you can type "banned."

I also get material from Kingdom of Pets - the dog training people. They get questions from people who have training issues and answer them in newsletters. I receive a weekly email from a holistic vet who wrote an article about luxating patella surgery. I commented on and quoted her article.

If you follow other blogs in your area, you can comment on someone's topic or better still, disagree with an opinion raised on another blog or a squidoo lens. Creating controversy is another excellent way to get people engaged in your blog, build up your following, and increase blog traffic.

Easy Paycheck Formula Versus One Week Marketing Actions Plans - Differences

In an earlier blog post (http://affiliate-marketer-success.blogspot.com/2010/11/easy-paycheck-formula-versus-one-week.html), I talked about the similaries between two bestselling affiliate marketing actions plans - Easy Paycheck Formula by Sara Young and One Week Marketing by Potpiegirl.

Now for the differences between the affiliate plans . . .

The Audience
Easy Paycheck Formula is geared to the newbie affiliate marketer. One Week Marketing could be considered an intermediate blueprint.

The Tools
Potpiegirl recommends Squidoo for a web site base while Sara Young seems to prefer blogger.com. It's really a matter of preference. Both squidoo and blogger should rank highly on google.

Not to be totally confusing, but Potpiegirl includes blogs in her complete formula for traffic generation, while Sara Young mentions squidoo as a possibility for showcasing products. Again, the dominant presence to promote a product is simple preference.

Support
Questions about each product can be answered by a support help desk - you ask a question and the support desk responds. Sara Young goes one step further - she updates her product on the affiliate page. This is a major difference between the two products. If something major changes in a step by step procedure like keyword research with the google adwords tool, the action plan should reflect that change (and Sara has updated her plan accordingly). If Potpiegirl does something similiar, I would like to know about it. The Help desk did not respond to my question about this topic.

Hope this helps. Note that this is my take on these two products. Each has its own value in terms of learning tools to bring you up to speed in affiliate marketing.

I've promoted and used two affiliate actions plans - One Week Marketing by Potpiegirl and Easy Paycheck Formula by Sara Young. In fact, Potpiegirl actually endorses Sara's plan (click the previous link to see Potpiegirl's testimonial).

This post is NOT about which one is better, because that would be a hard call to make. It really depends on your personal preferences and what stage you are in your IM ventures. This post is about is The Similarities when one plan is compared to the other.

The most startling similarity is that both products read like affiliate marketing tutorials - sorta of "market along with Potpiegirl and Sara". This is a wonderful attribute of these products - you will have an easy time understanding each author's approach to affiliate marketing campaigns.

If you can find low competition keywords with reasonable traffic, you're on your way. Start with Amazon bestsellers in your niche and lauch your campaign on squidoo or blogger.

Write plenty of good articles using the low competition, high-volume keywords. Find them with the keyword tool (exact matches) - search volume at least 1000, with low competition. That way you can get to the top of google rankings fairly quickly.

Some people think creating video and audio productions for their web sites must be an expensive proposition. Yet many affiliates use video (and audio) to promote products.

How exactly can you pull off promotional video production without hiring people who "know what they're doing?"

With a few simple, inexpensive tools, you can do it yourself relatively cheaply.

Here's an example:

A friend of mine, Carol, is promoting a book, ebook, and her services as a speaker. She is giving free presentations on her topic - Looking For Scholarships. She made a presentation and answered questions at a Rotary Club meeting in a small affluent Connecticut town.

Flip Camcorders For Video
We arrived at the site a little early to set up the room. We set up a tripod with an UltraHD, one of the Flip HD camcorders, to video her presentation. It did look a little silly - a tiny pocket camcorder sitiing on top of the tripod, but hey - whatever works!

Bottom Line
If you want to do your own promotional video production - you need to spend about $200 for the video and audio equipment. Compare that to spending thousands for professionals.

Will the end product suffer? Perhaps not - Carol commented that the video was superior to the professional video done for her in the past. Wait 'til she hears the audio - that little Sandisk MP3 player captured her entire speech flawlessly!

Keyword Selection - The Critical First Step To Making Money On The Net

So you're into making money on the net?

You've written articles until your fingers hurt and feel that article marketing techniques just don't work.

Have you considered the keywords you've chosen?

Are they buying keywords?
They solve a problem for the target audience (for example, correcting or solving dog behavior problems).

Are they very competitive - over 10,000 hits when you put the keywords in quotes in google? Try long-tailed keywords with less than 10,000 hits. Long-tiled keywords are those with more than a few words in them; for example, "stop a dog from barking".

What volume of global traffic do they get in the Google keyword external tool? Your traffic indicator is usually more than 65 hits per day (at least 2,000 per month).

You get traffic from these articles, but the numbers are not enough to convert your visitors into buyers.

It's very possible you need to dig a little deeper into the keywords that you are using to drive traffic.

By the end of this post, you will have a list of specific keywords you can use for rewrites, new articles and blog posts. The list contains actual keywords used to search your existing articles. Click Article Views and sort the articles by number of views.

Select an article with a high number of views and click the Views number.

When you click Traffic Search Terms, you will see the keywords that drove visitors to the article in a particular month. Copy these keywords into a list. Go to the next month's keywords and repeat the process, eliminating duplicate keywords from the list.
Note: if there are no keywords, go to the next article.

Once you have a list of at least 25 keywords, run whatever procedure you normally use to select keywords. You will use them in your campaign to increase web site traffic. Rewrite existing aricles and submit to new directories. Create new articles or blog posts using the chosen keywords.
