Just a very quick blog post to let you know that there was a massive earthquake in
Christchurch, New Zealand (where Affilorama’s head office is) and the city centre
is in a pretty bad way. It is currently on lock down and there is no power or access to our offices unfortunately.

Are Virtual Goods The Next Frontier For Brands?

Brands have already done a fine job of working their way into every aspect of our real world. You’ll find brand advertising pretty much everywhere you look, offline and online. Every communications medium is peppered with brand ads. Less obvious forms of brand advertising, such as product placements in television shows and movies, are commonplace.

Now, it seems, brands would like to play a role in virtual worlds in much the same way. Big brands – H&M stores, MTV Networks, and Volvo Cars, to name a few, are testing “virtual merchandise” in social games to see if it will generate brand awareness, according to a recent article in the New York Times.

H&M and Volvo are both running campaigns on MyTown. In case you’re not a follower of iPhone apps, MyTown is a location-based mobile entertainment app built around local shops, restaurants and hangouts. Users check-in at real-world locations and can unlock rewards. Players can purchase, upgrade and collect rent on their properties in their virtual town.

MyTown offers brand advertisers the ability to reach a very large base of engaged users. As of May, for example, MyTown had more than two million players. More than 100,000 players join each week, and users spend more than an hour per day in the app, on average.

That’s why H&M, a European youth-oriented fashion retailer that’s both trendy and value-oriented, went on MyTown in March. During the H&M campaign, MyTown players that checked in to a retail store, shopping center, or spa, hair salon, or other female-centric locations near H&M stores were able to unlock H&M virtual items that then unlocked real-world discounts. The Times reports that some 700,000 players participated. H&M is now planning a new campaign on MyTown.

Volvo just started a campaign on MyTown. Players check in to an auto dealership or garage and can receive virtual Volvo tires, steering wheels, sedans, or the company’s logo. The timing of the campaign coincides with the promotion of Volvo’s 2011 S60 new mid-sized sports sedan.

Emily Garvey, brand manager at Media Contacts, the digital agency for Volvo, tells the New York Times that Volvo is using MyTown to “attract auto enthusiasts – who are about 60 percent men – to get excited and to change brand perception so people think of it as a sporty, fun and good-looking car.”

MTV, meanwhile, is promoting its September 12 “2010 Video Music Awards” show by using Mall World to offer “virtual replicas of celebrity accessories and fashion items like the singer Beyonce’s diamond ring.” Mall World is a Facebook application targeting women that has about 400,000 monthly visitors.

Farmville, a social game with some 20 million players, is also a virtual opportunity for real world brands. For the first time in July, Zynga incorporated an organic blueberry crop from Cascadian Farms into its Farmville game. In March, Bing used an integrated ad on Farmville to generate 400,000 Facebook fans.

Brand advertisers like H&M, MTV, and Volvo are early adopters in an arena that is still in its infancy, says the New York Times. Currently, “there are few solid measures to pinpoint how much campaigns offering the pretend items build awareness, enthusiasm or loyalty to a company and generate real-life purchases.” But as the real world becomes overly saturated with brand advertising, the virtual world may become the next ad frontier for brands.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about what Apple and Google plan to do about the social web. While Apple recently launched iTunes Ping, Google has been acquiring social networking companies like the Rothschilds acquired the British Empire the the day after Waterloo. And while everyone wonders whether any of this will work out for either of Apple or Google, most of us are overlooking how both companies are greedily mapping out our real social networks and social graphs.

An Unwalled Social Network

Basically, both companies control vastly popular mobile platforms, and those platforms give them access to a much more tangible social graph than anything that Facebook has built out. As MG Siegler recently noted for TechCrunch, “the best indicator of who I actually interact with socially the most in real life are the calls I make and the texts I send — it’s all mobile interaction.”

This is why Facebook Places is so important: it gives Facebook a chance to remain relevant in the real, location-based world (and not become just one piece of an otherwise much larger suite of apps). And there are many ways in which in your Facebook (and other social media) apps can cross-tabulate your phone contacts with your online social networks.

But that doesn’t mean these social networks are safe. It just means they’ve bought themselves a bit more time.

A Networked Contact List

Okay, so right now my Android phone has my contact list. And then I download social media apps that interfaces with that contact lists, and helps me manage my multi-layered social life more efficiently.

But what if I didn’t need to download those apps? What if my phone offered all the functionality of Facebook (Twitter, Foursquare) right out of the box? And what if it wasn’t because these third-party apps were pre-installed?

You see, Apple or Google already has my phone. No matter what apps I use, they have my Tweets and my email and SMS and my contact list.

In a nutshell, they have all my data and content. So what is stopping them from integrating Tweet-like and location-based status updates the same way that Facebook did with its news feed and with Facebook Places?

What happens if social networking functions become standardized protocols just like email has, and all that still matters is the service provider and client you choose?

At that point, the Android (and just about any other mobile OS) would tap into your contact list to offer this functionality right out of the box, and Facebook would become just another storage bin for a specific niche social data the same way that Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail are for email right now. This, of course, wouldn’t mean that Facebook was completely dead in the water. But it would considerably limit the company’s potential and kill its status as media darling.

Basically, just like iTunes gives Apple an edge over Facebook and Google, Android and the iPhone give Google and Apple an edge over Facebook. They have my contact list first, so they augment my social reality more efficiently than many other third-party services.

Of course, Facebook might be developing its own OS, and that OS could turn out to be mobile or desktop or both. But for now, they’re still being middle-mannaged on their entire user-base on both accounts. And, if users still have to use someone else’s OS to run your apps, who really owns those users?

With with the latest release of iTunes, Apple has forayed into social networking. iTunes 10 includes Ping, a built-in social network for music.

With Apple’s recent launch of iAds, a platform that taps into iTunes’ existing user data to let advertisers target users through existing iPhone apps, Ping is an important move to grow iTunes’ social graph. Basically, Ping can end up making iTunes a lot stickier, giving both Apple and iAds advertisers more insight into how to sell to iTunes users.

All that being said, Ping can also fall flat on its face. Let’s take a look at 5 reasons why Ping can both succeed and fail.

1. Ping Launches with a Strong User Base

Will Work: With over 160 million iTunes users, Ping has a considerable head start. Indeed, a lot of social networking start-ups hit the Deadpool before they hit 1 millions (trust me, I know: I’ve worked for one).

Won’t Work: Offering an existing user-base something cool doesn’t always mean it’s going to work. Consider the number of Google users. Now, consider the number of Google’s failures and then add Google Wave to the list. Res ipsa loquitur…

2. Ping is a Value Added Component

Will Work: While most social networks are just that, Ping is a social network that plugs into an existing ecommerce suite. Users already find value in iTunes, and Ping will help them get more value out of it. In other words, while most social networks are just useless fun, Ping takes useless features and makes them useful by plugging them into an already useful tool — iTunes.

Won’t Work: Now just because you give it to them, doesn’t mean that they’re going to use it. Consider this: iTunes is like a giant online mall. But with the exception of teenagers, people don’t go to the mall to socialize, they go to the mall to shop. Basically, most users might turn out to be decidedly uninterested in socializing via iTunes.

Take Zune Social, for instance. Zune has had social features since its launch in 2006, and it still remains irrelevant. Granted, iTunes Ping boasts a user-base from the get-go, but it still goes to show that just because you offer social features beyond your core functionality, there’s no guarantee users will pick it up.

3. User Choice / Control

Will Work: Ping gives users just the kind of control that Facebook has always struggled with, and if Facebook can get it wrong and be such a success, things are looking up for Ping. As TechCrunch reports, Ping lets:

To be more clear, Apple asks you to decide between two things: do you want to allow people to follow you, or do you want no one to be able to follow you? The latter is a nice option because you can still use Ping, you simply use it as a lurker. You can see what other people with public profiles are doing, but they can’t see what you are doing. The other option is to let people follow you — but there’s a sub option to this. You can either let anyone follow you (think: Twitter) or you can get notifications to approve everyone who wants to follow you (think: Facebook).

The kind of choice of choice and flexibility can be exactly what iTunes users need to share their social graph with Apple.

Won’t Work: Too much choice can also be a bad thing. With 3 different levels of functionality, there’s considerable room for users to misunderstand the service. Just imagine if the majority of users decided to “lurk”. Basically, a bunch of users will set-up their Ping profiles, surf around, and not find enough to make it worth their time, and Ping can end up going stagnant.

4. Ping Has Revenue Models on Toast

Will Work: Ping has one thing that many social networking start-ups lack: a revenue model. First, through Ping, Apple will be able to cross-sell and upsell iTunes users based on their social graph – i.e. “your friends like this, so you might, too.”

Second, the Ping social graph can expand on the data already available to iAds advertisers (such as purchasing habits and history). This will make iAds that much more appealing to advertisers and, potentially, that much more profitable.

Won’t Work: Okay, I can’t see any way a revenue model can work against Ping. In essence, the “value added component” it offers users pertains to iTunes sales, and iAds advertisers. From a revenue model stand point, Ping just makes sense.

5. The Ping Model Works

Will Work: Just like Facebook usurped LBS social networks, Ping capitalizes on a set of features that have already succeeded. Social music networks such as Last.fm and Pandora have already proven popular with users. But where Last.fm and Pandora have had to refer their users to third-party music stores, Ping is part and parcel of a music store that’s already popular. In fact, if I were Last.fm and Pandora, I’d be worried.

Won’t Work: The fact that other music social networks have been so successful also poses a bit of a barrier to iTunes’ Ping. Consider how Twitter has continued to grow and flourish despite Facebook patenting and integrating the news feed.

For instance, Last.fm and/or Pandora users have invested years in their favorites, friend lists, and preferences. Although this won’t prevent them from trying out Ping, it does make it less likely that they abandon their other accounts altogether. That means they’ll be less likely to move their music socializing away from their existing services over to Ping.

Anyone’s Guess

The fact of the matter is that we can look at Ping any which way. And in the end, it can be a huge success, a mild success, or a complete flop. I guess the best we can do is look at all the variables, place our bets, and hope for the best.
