2. Backup & Restore

This is the Section where you can:

• Do a Database Backup – Doing a Backup for Content Only
• Full Backup - Back up Everything (note: please be patient when you are performing this operation especially if you have a blog with lots of content)
• ImportBuddy – this is the script you need to download to your computer and upload through FTP if you need to do restoration or migration
• RepairBuddy – this is another script which will help you to troubleshoot or repair your blog (especially if you have been hit by malware)

The Backup Archives will be the section where you can download your ZIP files if you have performed any Backups. BackupBuddy does a very good job of renaming your zip files so you can identify them easily.

And if you have access to Amazon S3, DropBox, Rackspace Cloudfiles, you can configure them by clicking on the “Manage Remote Destinations & Archives”. One of the reasons for recommending BackupBuddy is because you can setup automatic backup for your Blogs to the Clouds thus making sure that your blogs are always in good shape.

3. Malware Scan

Another recommended feature of BackupBuddy is the Malware Scan where a single click will give you details on:

• whether there’s any Malware Detected
• your Web Server Details
• your WordPress Application Details where you can take note of any Errors and Warnings
• your Site Links (and check if there’s any links to any external sites that are without your approval)

4. Server Info.

This is where you get information on your Server Information. If you are a Technical Person, you can see information like the WordPres Version, MySQL Version, AddHandler in .htaccess, PHP Versions & more… If you are just a normal blogger, what you need to take note is the Status & Result Column – if there’s a lot of FAIL or Red Bar… you may wish to highlight this to your Web Hosting Company.

5. Scheduling

This is the section where you will set the automatic scheduled backups. You can set BackupBuddy to automatic backup your blog and store it as a ZIP file in a destinated folder where you can manually retrieve it through FTP or to upload it to your designated Cloud Service.

6. Settings

This is the section where the main control for BackupBuddy is. You will set:

• Email Addresses of whom you want BackupBuddy to identify when the backup is completed or there’s errors
• Setup Backup Reminders
• Backing up of Database Tables (not just WordPress) which means you are sharing one MySQL database with other applications.
• Enable ZIP Compression
• Perform Integrity Check on Backup Files
• Force Compatibility Mode Backups (for Advanced User)
• Skip Database Dump on Backup
• Set the Archive Storage Limits
• Backup Exclusions – Directories that you do not wish to do any backups.

My Personal Experience With BackupBuddy

I have managed to migrate my Article Directory Blog from a local server in Singapore over to HostGator with the same Domain Name. BackupBuddy did a Full Backup and took over 10 minutes to perform a 11+ MB backup to a ZIP file. 

To perform a DNS change this took me around 6 hours for it to take proper effect. After that all I need to do is to upload the ImportBuddy Script and once done, it prompted me to upload the ZIP file and also to make sure that I have created a new MySQL Database and a New MySQL Username for this blog. Next it guided me the necessary steps and within 15 minutes, my Article Directory Blog is migrated successfully – posts, pictures and databases are all intact!
