Blue Sky for Lifestyle Photography!

Great to see a blue sky and sunshine this afternoon. Just what I needed for a Lifestyle Photography shoot. It was originally scheduled for yesterday, but we decided to wait until today for better weather. and it turned out to be a good decision..

The Gnoll Country park was the location for this shoot. With the sunshine streaming through the leafless trees, it seemed as though half of Neath had the same idea. Families, kids and dogs of all shapes and sizes (dogs that is!) took the chance for a stroll in the sun.

Lifestyle out of the studio is fantastic and I love to take advantage of the natural lighting and the fact that there is so much to interact with, especially with kids. The resulting images are far more life like than a studio setting and it is possible to get the images that are impossible in a studio.

I find that being outdoors, people relax more than they ever do in a studio where you are more likely to be worried about hair, make-up and how the kids look.

Nothing looks better than the healthy glow on you cheeks and the sun in you hair for a natural colour.

It has been a few weeks since my last post as I have been nicely busy! The Wedding Fayre at Blanco's went well, it was great to take a couple of bookings on the day and another one a few days later.

On the commercial side of things, I have been busy photographing a range of people and their products for the spring edition of The Best Of Neath magazine which is out soon. I will post some commercial images in a future blog.

I had a lovely afternoon yesterday at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Llansamlet (above image) where they held an open day for couples to see the hotel set up for a wedding. It was good to be able to speak with several brides and their families all of whom were newly engaged so just starting to look around. Most of them were looking to get married in 2011, so I now have price lists for 2011 if you would like more information.

Bookings for next year are still coming in too, and there are some dates available for this year. Some months are full, but get in touch if you are getting married this year to see if you date is free.

Swansea Bay Radio Wedding Fayre 2009

With just over a week to go, it's been a busy time getting all things ready for the Wedding Fayre at Blanco's in Port Talbot. Come and see Affirmation Photography there as well as florists, menswear, bridal gowns etc. It is on from 10 am until 3 pm and is being run by Swansea Bay Radio

It seems that after a quite time before Christmas as far as wedding enquiries and bookings went, January has more than made up for it, with over thirty enquiries in the last three weeks. I have taken three booking in the last ten days, so date are now filling quite quickly. Though some of the enquiries are for weddings in the next 3-4 months and I have to turn them away because I am already booked, I had one enquiry this morning for December 31st 2010, which is two years away. That is what I call organised! When I got married almost five years ago, I was still finishing my dress the night before...

Yep, it's a busy time for enquiries, I am guessing that there were lots of romantic proposals over Christmas and the new year! Congratulations to you all. Now the fun begins!

You are welcome to a free consultation, where we can have a chat about your day and I can give you a quote based on your requirements for your wedding. There is never, ever any pressure to book, you can go away and have a chat about it and get back to me.You can get in touch with me anytime.

All weddings will get a free online gallery for you friends and family to view your images. You can have this password protected if you wish so only those you have given the password to can view. You can see a sample of an online gallery here.

It won't have escaped your notice that there has been 2.5% reduction in the VAT rate. Well, there is even better news than that. There is no VAT to pay at all at Affirmation Photography! Whereas with a lot of photographers you will still be paying 15% VAT without even realising it, It you pay less while at the same time still getting a top class service!

Update

Christmas is not to far away, have been busier than I expected which is great. This week I have sent some canvases off for printing from a lifestyle shoot, sorted through a load of other images that people wanted before Christmas. Quite a few of these where images that I had taken over the summer from Proms, Anniversary parties, Engagement shoots...

There is still time to order prints from the Fashion Show at Neath Rugby Club as the Gallery is online until the 15th of December. 20% of the proceeds will be donated to the Gareth Jones fund.

Coming up in early 2008 I will be at two Wedding Fayre's. The first will be on February 1st at Blanco's Hotel in Aberavon in association with Swansea Bay Radio. More details when I have them.
The second will be with the Best of Neath and will probably be the middle of March. We are meeting this week to arrange venue etc, so more details to follow.

Fashion Show Photography

On Thursday 13th of November, Neath Rugby Club held a Fashion Show in aid of the Gareth Jones Trust Fund.

There were clothes for all ages, Rascals of Neath had fabulous clothes for the under 10's (why didn't they make girls clothes like that when I was that age?)More about them and some pics in my next post.

Then ladies of all ages wore clothes from Replay Sport Fashion. This shop was a real surprise to me when I first went in there. I expected nothing more than rugby Jerseys for men, but as you can see from these images, they sell clothes for ladies of all ages too.
All the money raised from ticket sales will go to the trust fund.

More Happy Weddings!

Here are a few images from the wedding of Sam and Richard in Caerphilly. It was a nice change to see blue sky! I had almost forgotten what it looked like! One of the guests said that I would make a fortune selling photographs of a blue sky, he could have a point there!

Their colour theme was cream and brown and it was nice to see the men in brown suits as a change to black or grey, very smart and really lovely with the brides cream dress.
The cake was made by her Mum, and I was pretty impressed! She has given the professionals a run for their money! In a future blog, I shall be posting a few wedding cake pics to give you some ideas.

The ceremony took place in Penallta House at Tredmean with the reception held at Virginia Golf Club. Both venues were lovely and I took photographs at both places. I was able to take photographs during the ceremony which was great as it is not always the case.

Dove Release

As promised in my last post, here are the details of one of the companies involved in Ian and Lynne's wedding.

Loveydoveyuk.com are a company that offer dove release for your wedding. These birds are beatifully kept and when they are released, circle overhead to get their bearings, then do what they do naturally. Fly home!

Men in Kilts!!

We may not have had the best summer in recent years, but nothing got in the way of any couple having the best time. For this couple, though it wasn't a hot sunny day it stayed dry the whole time for plenty of outdoor photographs. More photographs from this wedding to follow.

Step 1: Pick up the Phone...

From the earliest moments in the life of Affirmation Photography, in fact, before I even had a name, my primary concern was to offer a professional yet personal service.

As a wedding photographer I believe that every one deserves quality photographs in the way that suits them. All couples are different which is why I don't believe that limiting couples to choosing from one of three packages is the best way to work.

Imagine for a moment, you step into a bridal shop to buy your dream dress. Hanging on the rails are only three dresses to choose from. They are all nice, but none of them are quite what you wanted. Would you settle for one of them thinking 'it will do', or would you leave pretty quickly and find a dress maker who offers a personal service and will make exactly what you want?

Surely your wedding photography should be the same?

I am a lovely person to talk to (even if I say so myself!) so don't be scared to pick up the phone or send me a telephone number to contact you on. Mobile numbers are fine but please check it is the right one! There is never any pressure or obligation to book.
There is no denying that emails are a great way to communicate, but by talking to someone, the right questions are asked, answers can be given there and then etc.

Your Life, Your Style!

On the only day it stopped raining in the last two weeks, I did some lifestyle photography at the Gnoll County Park. It was a one year olds birthday shoot. He looked gorgeous in his stripy shirt and jeans and though he was quite determined not to smile or look in the direction of the camera, I did manage to get some lovely shots.
Having children of my own, I didn't feel in the least bit daft crawling along on the grass clutching my camera! I had forgotten how fast they can move on all fours!

The things I learnt years ago when my kids were that age, is that you can't make them pose, smile or even sit still so you really have to go with the flow and that's why my style of Lifestyle is so relaxed. Tenby Wedding

Well, the weather did get worse on Saturday for
the wedding in Tenby (see previous post). As we were driving down, it started to rain, then it cleared to glorious blue sky and sunshine for about 10 minutes. By the time we got to the Heywood Mount Hotel, the sky was that nondescript grey colour and the rain was relentless.

Not to worry though! The hotel was lovely inside and I got there an hour before the wedding to get a feel for the place and introduce myself to the staff and registrar. It is always good that they know who you are as registrars in particular have had problems with insensitive or over keen photographers. There was no problem with me taking photographs during the ceremony as long as I didn't use flash or move from where I had chosen to stand.

We did manage to nip out side for about four minutes to get a few photographs when the rain stopped. However, as soon as I had grabbed a rug from the car so the bride wouldn't ruin her dress on the wet stone bench, the rain started again. I quickly grabbed a few shots before dashing back inside to dry off my camera.

As for the wedding itself, there were twenty six of them at the ceremony and everything looked fab. The bride wore a ballerina length pink dress, and the reception room was decorated with pink lilies, gerberas, hydrangeas and yellow roses (above pics). I will be adding a link to more of their photographs, but I always let the couple see them first. I spent all day Sunday sorting though the images so they are now ready for the couple to view.

It’s Not All Bad News!

There’s no escaping the words ‘credit crunch’ unless you live on another planet. We all know prices have gone up leaving less money to spend on your wedding.

But here is the good news!

You Can Have The Fantastic Wedding Photography That You Deserve!

As I live on the same planet as the rest of you, Affirmation Photography, apart from the excellent prices and service, has two options that will help you to have the wedding photography that you deserve without the financial stress.

Option A

Usually you pay your deposit to secure your date then the balance 14 days before the wedding. The problem is that all your other balances are due at the same time. Option A is to pay some of the balance in the months leading up to the wedding. Even paying £50 or even £25 a month means that you will have little or nothing to pay as a lump sum. This is not a credit agreement so costs you nothing extra, and you don’t have to pay it every month if you don’t want to, it could be an occasional payment. As they say, every bit helps!

Option B

Some of you will already have your house and all the tea towels and toasters you need, but don’t feel comfortable asking people for cash instead of presents. You could however ask for Affirmation Photography vouchers towards the cost of your photography. Any amount can be bought from £5 and will come off the balance or you could use them for reprints/enlargements or a canvas/acrylic of your favourite image after the wedding.

Like every other small business owner, price rises affect us to, we all have bills to pay, families to support, and tax to pay. If I can help you to have the photography you deserve, then I will.

A mere £23!!

There are many times I have done quotes for people who have been very happy with the price and the service that I offer only to have them come back to me a few days later to say they have found some one who was 'a little bit cheaper'. In one case the little bit turned out to be a mere £23!

Then they pointed out that the other photographer also 'offered a little bit more'. This turned out to be a CD of twenty or so low res (low quality) images for the purpose of emailing to friends, family etc. I reminded them that I offered them an online gallery with up to 100 hi-res images of their day for all friends/family to view/buy if they wished.

They then pointed out that the other photographer was also offering to take unlimited photos on the day and a retouching service. To me, both of these are standard practice and go without saying.

I emailed the couple back, and suggested that they meet with myself and the other photographer as it is vitally important that you are not persuaded to go for a photographer because they are a little bit cheaper, or offer a little bit more. It is important that you not only like the style of your photographer, but like them as a person too. Remember that they will be with you on one of the most important days of your life. Your wedding photographs are too important to take a chance on.

The couple did meet with myself and the other photographer (and another two!) and I am looking forward to their wedding next year!

Coffee and Cake

When you start looking for a photographer, you will most defiantly come across words like documentary, photo journalistic and reportage style.
What does it mean? Well, in a nutshell, they all mean the same thing. Rather than the posed, organised group shots of the passed, photographs are taken as events unfold just as they would be when photographing a news story for example.

There are phrases you will come across such as relaxed, informal, friendly and natural. Well, I would hope they would be!! Why would you want a photographer who is grumpy and uptight? Or one that is miserable and sulky?

On the other hand, informal can sometimes be taken too for. You don’t want a photographer turning up in jeans and a tee-shirt who disappears every half hour for a cigarette or one who helps themselves to the buffet without being invited.

Freebies!!

There is nothing nicer than getting something for nothing I am sure you will agree. So as well as the offer I have on until the end of June (Free 12"x12" canvas on all weddings booked over £650), I have a free book for everyone who books their wedding photography with Affirmation Photography.

Obviously, from the tittle, it won't be much use to you if you have already bought your dress but for those that haven't, you will get one of these as a thank you once you have paid your deposit.

It is an invaluable book (and worth £6.99) that has advice on dress styles to suit your shape, accessories, wearing and caring for your dress, veils, shoes, and a load of other ideas.

So, when you you go into a wedding dress shop for the first time, you will know the difference between a sweetheart neckline, a crumbcatcher or a halterneck!

Now you are probably wondering why I am giving away a book on dresses not photography, and the answer is this. I cannot say how important it is for you to not only look fabulous in your dress, but to feel fabulous too. The more comfortable you are in your dress, the more relaxed you will feel and look which reflects in the photographs. You don't want your photographs to show you constantly pulling up the front of you dress, for example. Remember that you will have you dress on for up to 12 hours, and the big dresses can be surprisingly heavy!

Make sure the bridal shop are selling you the gown that is best for you, rather than the best one for their bank balance!

It's Prom Time!

For those who are to young to be getting married, probably the next major event is the end of year prom. I think some of the prom dresses I have seen cost as much as wedding gowns!

As this is a major event when you are 15/16 I am offering an hours photo shoot where you will get a set of 15 photographs for you to keep. They will be printed as 8x6 and it's open to the boys as well! I know the can scrub up well too as my own son proved last week for his prom!

There are no cheesy studio poses, but natural photography out at the location of your choice. If you are having a hair trial, it is the ideal time to have your photos done. You could also have friendship groups done too!

This offer is on until the end of July and would make a great way to celebrate the end of exams.

Working Alone

Occasionally I get asked if I work with another photographer for weddings, and the simple answer is no, I don't. Here are the reasons why.

1. It makes your photography more expensive.

2. People book Affirmation Photography because the like me, they like my style. If I brought another photographer, it changes the whole ethos.

3. One of the ideas I had behind Affirmation Photography was that it is a completely personalised service from the first phone call or email, to you receiving you final images. This way, I know all my Brides and you are never just another wedding. Though of course I need to make money, but I never want that to take away from the love I have for photography.

There are a few photographers around who maybe work in pairs, but do check that if you are paying for two professional photographers, that is exactly what you will get. Sometimes one will be a student on work experience getting paid £20 for example.

I do have two backup photographers for emergencies. I can cover their work and they can cover mine. Fortunately though, we have never needed to use each other, but it gives us and our clients peace of mind should the worse happen.

How do you Find a Wedding Photographer?

However you find your wedding photographer, please, please, please do the following before you pay your deposit.

1. Meet with the photographer if at all possible as there is nothing worse than having some one you really don't get on with turn up on your wedding day. You can also relax more on the day if you know your photographer well and in return, you will get much better photographs.

2. Ask to see samples of their work and check out their website, even if they have been recommended to you.

3. Ask if yours is the only wedding they will be doing on that day. There are a few photographers who will take on two which I find highly unacceptable! I only take on one wedding a week so I can get your images to you as soon as possible.

4. Check how long you will have to wait for your final images. If you are having a digital album you will obviously have to wait a few weeks longer for the printing, binding and delivery, but even if you are on honeymoon for two weeks, and want to chose your own images you should never ever have to wait more than 6-7 weeks.

At Affirmation Photography, assuming you are not going away, or are happy to leave the final choices to myself, this is the turnaround you can expect.
a. Printed images only (no album). Ready for collection in 5 working days though sometimes less for smaller weddings.
b. Personalised album 10 working days (though quite often less)
c. Digital album/Storybook, approx 3 weeks from the time you approve your design.

The idea behind Affirmation Photography has always been to give the customer what they want instead of telling them what they can have. So a big thanks to all who voted on the poll where you all had the chance to tell me which offer you would prefer when it comes to your wedding photography.

The clear winner by 5 votes was ‘A free 12”x12” canvas with all orders over £650. So this is the offer on all weddings booked from 21st of April until the end of June 2008. The only condition is that the total cost of your wedding photography is £650 or over.

You can chose your favourite image from your wedding, decide if you would like colour, black and white etc, and leave the rest to me. If you wanted to upgrade to a larger size, you only pay the difference and you will receive your canvas within 14 days of ordering.

Tip of the week - Your Venue and the Weather

However much time and money you spend on your wedding, the one thing you can never be sure of is the weather. Glorious sunshine one minute, hailstones the next - what is a bride to do? Well, the only thing that can be done is take care in choosing your venue. Take into consideration the inside as well as the outside. Beautiful stone work and landscape gardens are great if the weather is, but take a good look inside for alternatives. Are there nice features inside for photographs in case the weather lets you down? Fire places, windows or maybe nice sofa's can just add a bit of interest to you images rather than blank walls.

If you are planning a registrar office wedding, why don't you consider getting married at your reception venue? There are a growing number of hotels that are licensed for weddings and generally they are nicer inside than some of the registrar offices I have been to. The added bonus is that there is no traveling between the register office and the reception so even if it is poring down, you are inside the same building for the whole day.

While you may have chosen the church because of the inside, please check the policy on photographing during the service. More and more I find that I cannot take any photographs at all during the service other than signing the register. On some occasions, I have been able to go back into the church with the bride and groom but this is not always the case.

As a photographer, I have not had any weddings where the rain was so bad it spoiled the day. The important point to remember is that it is your day, and the start of your life together as a married couple, so don't worry about the weather, it really is beyond our control. As for the photographs, it's my job to work around any bad weather that comes our way, so relax and enjoy!!

I hate using cliches when it comes to describing anything, including my business or others. The problem is, how do I write things without including those often annoying little phrases that I dislike so much?

I recommend Media Eclipse to those that are considering a wedding DVD. I have worked with them on various occasions and they are happy, creative people who know their stuff. Having a DVD of your wedding is not a substitute for a photographer (though I would say that wouldn't I?) but they do compliment each other perfectly.
