Bumps and Bruises!

One day, I was reading an herbal book and learned that Geranium essential oil would help heal a bruise. I am kind of a klutz, so I filed that in my brain as useful information! Sure enough, a few weeks later, I was baking with some new sugar I had bought that had seetled and gotten hard. To loosen it up, I hit it hard with the heel of my had. Of course, it made a big blood blister. I had some Geranium essential oil, so I rubbed some in. It felt great, so I continued to rub it in for about five minutes. While I was doing this, the bruise started going away!! I couldn't believe it!! Through the years, I used this when my family started to bruise and it worked for them too!

A couple of weeks ago, my hubby's cousin and his family came to visit. They have a beautiful, active two year old. She was enjoying her lunch in her little booster seat, when all of a sudden she hopped out of her chair and ht her head extremely hard on our dining room table! We all were so relieved when she started to cry! Immediately she got an egg on her forehead. I got the Geranium out and massaged it in her boo-boo for five to ten minutes. I could feel the egg getting smaller! This was about 12:30 in the afternoon. By 5pm the same day, it was gone! Her mom couldn't believe it!

The next week we were at church for Wednesday night supper. A small child had spilt some of his lemonade and no one had seen it happen. Sure enough, someone walked through it and fell. She hit her had and within five minutes, she had quite a swollen bruise on the side of her forehead. My daughter immediately thought of the Geranium and asked me to help her. I had to run home and pick some up (now I know to keep some in the glove box of my car!), but I could see the blue go away and the swelling seemed to start to go down. I hear back from her recently. I'm happy to say she is mending well!

When I was nine, my grandmother had a stroke. We lived very near her and my grandfather, so we were there before the ambulance got there. I was devastated to see my precious grandmother not know the people that loved her most in the world. It was hard to watch such a wonderful, capable woman completely lose her health that night. The right side of her body was completely paralyzed. She could no longer run her farmhouse, knit, sew, or use her beautiful handwriting. She wore a brace on her right leg for the last five years of her life. She was 62 when she had her stroke and 67 when she died.

I got a great email today from my sister and wanted to share the information with you. I wonder if knowing this could have helped my grandmother thirty six years ago.

Remember the first three letters of the word STROKE.... The letters S, T, and R.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are hard to identify. A stroke victim can suffer severe brain damage when not treated immediately. Many doctors say that if the patient can get medical attention within 3 hours of the stroke starting, they can reverse the effects of the stroke!

Doctors now believe that a bystander or family member can recognize a stroke by these three easy questions.

S - Ask the person to SMILE. Is the smile straight or crooked? A crooked smile could be a tip off to a possible stroke.

T - Ask the person to TALK. Can he/she repeat a simple sentence? (We are outside.)

R - RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he/she has trouble with ANY of these tasks, call 911 immediately.

There is now a NEW SIGN OF A STROKE - STICK OUT YOUR TONGUE.

If the tongue is crooked, or bends to one particular side, that is also an indication of a stroke.

When is Organic a Good Thing?

This is the time when many people are “going organic”. You see green businesses and products that say they are organic everywhere. This is wonderful. Healthy choices are finally being advertised in the grocery store, health and beauty, even on water bottles!

But just because something is labeled as organic doesn’t mean you don’t need to check further. In the health and beauty industry, many products have essential oils in them, but also have parabens and other synthetic ingredients to cancel many of the benefits.

Does that organic shampoo you just bought have methelparabens or polyparabens in it? Is there sodium laurel sulfate in that new cleanser you just bought? I was recently in Whole Foods and saw a lovely package of foaming bath salts with sodium laurel sulfate in it. It was labeled organic, but the extra ingredient in it made me walk on by! I saw the same with many of the skin care products there.

Tips for Carcinogen-Free Living

Recently I was a guest on Canada’s AM1410 CFUN morning show. Canadian rock star Bif Naked, announced that she has stage two breast cancer. The star enjoys a vegan diet and reports that she is very careful to live a healthy lifestyle. CFUN radio personalities Val and Nikki saw the link between the entertainment industry’s heavy use of cosmetics and breast cancer. They contacted me to discuss the connection between beauty products and the disease. We discussed some of the information in our blog article “10 Ingredients to Avoid in Skin Care Products”.

We also discussed how our modern household environment is perpetually exposing us to carcinogens.

Many home deodorizers are made from synthetic fragrances. Many man made fragrances combine with other synthetic ingredients and make phthalates. Phthalates will not be listed in an ingredients list, because they are a by product of synthetic fragrances. Spray them in your home and breathe them all day! I stay away from phthalates by staying clear of any man made fragrance.

Dryer sheets are not necessary. The problem with dryer sheets is that carcinogens not only go into your household, but also drift into the neighborhood as well. If you really need to use a dryer sheet to cut down on static electricity, I recommend Static Eliminator. I purchase these from the Bread Beckers, a local company that also sells organic grains and teaches a healthier lifestyle.

Paraffin candles many times have a wick with lead inside of it. The paraffin candles emit petroleum byproducts into the air, which are unsafe. If the wick has lead in it, heavy metals are floating in the air for you and your loved ones to breathe. Instead, I recommend a pure beeswax candle with a pure linen wick. Pure beeswax candles send out negative ions that clean the air instead of polluting it. My favorite candle is from the Chase Candle Company. If you really like scented candles, I recommend Bear Creek Candle Company. Their candles are scented with pure essential oils, like Affusion’s skin care products are scented with pure essential oils.

Do we really need all those heavy bathroom cleaners? My mom taught me to clean porcelain sinks, tubs, and toilets with simple laundry detergent. You will be surprised how well this simple cleaner shines your tub, toilet, and sinks. Just put a little laundry powder on a damp cloth. Then scrub and rinse. When finished cleaning, I wash my hands well with soap and water, and then massage in 1-2 drops of Tea Tree and Rosemary Essential Oil.

Don’t take this personally, but skip a meal once in a while. As Americans, we eat much more than we need to survive and be healthy. By skipping a meal, we allow our bodies to completely digest the food we have already eaten. When our digestive system gets backed up, reflux is more pronounced, allergies can act up more, and our bodies can have a hard time assimilating all the new vitamins, minerals, and waste products. Give your system a break.

Am I a Cool or Warm?

Back in the ‘80s women were having their “colors done”. The system that was popular then divided women into the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Summer and winter are cool tones, spring and autumn are warm tones.

People with cool tones have blue undertones to the skin. They look better in clear colors like pink, blue. Red looks good if it is a brick red. A cool looks better in white than she does in ivory.

I am a cool/fair. When I wear white or a clear tone, I’m fine. But if I wear ivory or khaki, people ask me if I feel okay!

Warm tones have more yellow in their skin. They look wonderful in ivory instead of white. These women tend to wear a more salmon pink, forest green or khaki.

Why Would I Break Out When I am Using Mineral Makeup?

I recently had a customer call me in frustration about her mineral makeup. She was getting painful break-outs around her mouth and chin. She had done her homework and had eliminated the idea of the break-outs coming from her skin care.

After about 15 minutes of conversation, we both realized that she could only be allergic to the minerals - that is all that was left. I asked her if she battled anemia and she affirmed my guess. She has an allergy to iron!

This problem now goes further than makeup and skin care. This is a health issue. If you are having problems with your mineral makeup and suspect that you are allergic to iron because you are anemic often, or tired on a daily basis, you need to get tested for an iron allergy.

As a Master Herbalist, I would like to recommend NAET treatments. NAET is a process that treats allergies by healing them! You don't have to battle allergy problems for the rest of your life. Our Cosmetics Really Can Make Us Sick

On February 15, 2007, Newsweek published an article about cosmetics being dangerous enough to make us very sick. They had carefully outlined scientific evidence as to why.

The article states that recently an independent chemical testing laboratory found para-dioxane; or 1,4-dioxane; in some children’s shampoos at levels higher than recommended by the FDA. The Environmental Working Group, www.ewg.org, estimates that one quarter of all personal-care products sold in the United States may contain this cancer-causing agent.

Affusion can’t stress enough how important it is to check your ingredients and know what you are putting on your body. Obviously, Affusion Skin Care products contain no para-dioxane and never has.

Affusion signed the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, www.safecosmetics.org, in 2004. The Environmental Working Group is working with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, forming a database of cosmetics, and ranking them from a scale of 0.0, the safest, to 5.0, the most dangerous. We entered our ingredients and found that all of our skin care and cosmetics ranked 0.1!

Don't Let Heavy Metal Makeup Rock Your World

As a recent Atlanta Journal and Constitution article shows, mineral makeup is rocking the beauty world. It is a wonderful product, in that it has natural minerals and keeps indefinitely. It can be applied to cover lightly or in a more concentrated way.

Don't get Drunk on Hand Sanitizers

The Washington Post reported on February 1, 2007 that a Maryland inmate was found to be extremely drunk from hand sanitizer. Another great article about this incident is from CBC news in Canada. The article states, "When asked why he ingested the hand cleaner, he pointed to the label, which read, 'Active ingredient 63 percent v/v isopropyl alcohol,' which he said is higher in alcohol content than vodka."

People are depending more and more on hand sanitizers instead of soap and water. Small children are given this sanitizer during school, at play and any other time of the day. Snopes, www.snopes.com, tells us of a true incident that happened to a little girl who ingested hand sanitizer and gave her mother an extremely frightening day. Thank goodness the child is alright.

There is an alternative to alcohol based hand sanitizers. A blend of tea tree and rosemary essential oil makes the perfect solution. Tea tree essential oil is antibacterial. Rosemary essential oil is anti-viral. Many of the illnesses that we are faced with in the winter are viral. Antibacterial sanitizers don’t protect against viral infections. Affusion is finding several uses for this wonderful product.

As a hand sanitizer, massage a drop of the essential oil into dry hands. This method works very well without water. Due to the strength of essential oils, a little bit goes a long way, so it is packaged in a 1/3 ounce bottle, making it travel well with you and your family. When soap and water is available, rinse with the soap and water. Hands will feel clean, but not stripped.

Why Should Skin Care Products and Cosmetics be Paraben and Phthalate Free?

Affusion Skin Care states that their products are paraben and phthalate free. You may be wondering why this is so important to us.

Synthetic preservatives, known as parabens, are a group of chemicals widely used to preserve food, cosmetics, and therapeutic products. Paraben is the common name for this class of chemical, however, they are also known by other names such as esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Other common names include methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, and butylparaben. Despite their widespread use, studies have shown that these preservatives can cause women to be more susceptible to breast cancer, and have also been linked to birth defects.

The FDA does not regulate the safety of cosmetic ingredients, and very little government or industry funding has been designated to study the relationship of these toxins to prolonged use. In 2004, the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, found that only 18 of the 7,500 cosmetics had their ingredients fully tested for safety. The remaining 99 percent had never been fully tested for links to cancer and birth defects.

Another problematic ingredient in modern skin care is the use of phthalates. A Harvard study in 2002 found that phthalates in artificial fragrances and grooming products are damaging to the DNA of sperm in adult men at current levels of exposure. This study was conducted by Dr. Susan Duty, a post-doctoral scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health; Russ Hauser, MD, Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health; and others.

Ten Ingredients to Avoid in Skin Care Products

Transdermal medicine has taught us that what we put on our skin goes into our bloodstream, so many people are trying to be more thoughtful about their skin care and cosmetics. But trying to understand ingredient labels can be frustrating. Affusion Skin Care owner, Denise Jacob, has always said that what’s not in a product is as important as what is.

Let’s focus on the ten main ingredients that are important to NOT be in your skin care.

1. Phthalates – Phthalates are a group of synthetic chemical compounds that are mainly used as softening agents. A joint Swedish-Danish research team found a very strong link between allergies in children and phthalates. Studies have reported that phthalates may mimic the female hormone oestrogen and cause "feminisation" of baby boys, lowering sperm count.

2. Parabens - Parabens are synthetic compounds used as a preservative in most beauty products. You can find them listed as methylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens, and ethylparabens. Parabens cause many allergic reactions and skin rashes. They have also been found in breast cancer tissue.

3. Talc – Talc has asbestos in it. Asbestos is another dangerous carcinagen.

4. Synthetic Dyes – Synthetic colors are a byproducts of the petroleum industry. The molecular structure of these products are so small that they can pass through the brain barrier. This can manifest itself as turning numbers backwards when writing or reading, peeling skin, acne, or ADD symtoms. Many people have allergies to artificial colorings, especially red 40. Affusion has no synthetic ingredientsin any or our products!

5. Petroleum-Based Wax – petroleum by-products can pass through the brain barrier and cause ADD/dyslexia symptoms.

6. Diethanolamine – DEA is used as a skin softener in personal care products. It is a skin irritant and can be carcinogenic when combined with other ingredients. Also avoid TEA, and MEA.

7. Bismuth Oxychloride - Bismuth is put in mineral cosmetics because it gives a sheen to the face, is soft to the touch, and is extremely inexpensive. A by product of lead and copper refining, bismuth oxychloride is a heavy metal. Heavy metals can lead to Alzheimers and Parkinson’s Disease.

8. Sodium Laurel Sulfate – SLS is used to enhance the foaming action of a product. It is a skin irritant and is easily absorbed into the heart, liver, brain, and eyes, which can cause long term effects. It has been linked to cataracts in adults and inhibiting proper developement of children’s eyes.
