Event Description: Join Akilah on a Metropolitan Safari! Metropolitan Safari is a cocktail party and fundraiser for the Akilah Institute for Women in Kigali, Rwanda. (www.AkilahInstitute.org) Akilah transforms the lives of young women by empowering them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to find meaningful employment and to serve as leaders in their communities. Upon completion of the three-year program, they will receive a Diploma in Leadership & Hospitality Studies, which will enable them to obtain jobs in the fastest growing sector of the Rwandan economy. Two of our students, Anita and Gisele, have made the journey from Rwanda to the United States for the first time to meet supporters and share their experiences at Akilah. Event Description: Members, Are you interested in lending a hand in improving DC's streetscape? Join us with with DC Office of Planning, the Capital City Fellows, and Affinity Lab to transform a vacant space located on H street to a Digital Arts Lab that will be part of Digital Capital Week. The kiosk will act as a temporary hub for festival attendees and the community to incubate ideas and launch projects. We are looking for 10-12 volunteers for this event. DC’s Temporary Urbanism initiative, organized by DC Office of Planning, supports the transformation of vacant spaces into creative places. This kiosk will be one of many being explored to instill creative functions within the structure's urban life cycle. Location: 1300 H Street NE (Corner of 13th Street NE and H Street NE). Date/Time: Saturday, May 22nd from 10:00am-2:00pm Activities: Main activities will include painting, gardening/landscaping, general interior cleaning & basic repairs. Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. All supplies will be provided. Event Description: Hey, a Gvite to get an idea of headcount **** Hello all, It was a great discussion on 11/19 to explore how we could apply our chapter's mission statement locally. From our discussion, we primarily hit on the following topics of Education and Homelessness. Both of these topics we have some experience in the past and we use it to our advantage. Our discussion seemed to hit on the area of Education and seeing if we could focus our energy as a group taking our discussion further. The next steps I see are to define the needs and to actively respond to the need keeping in mind our capabilities (in respect to availability and skillsets). The initiative can start off with being an activity that is one day or weekend such as painting walls or general improvement and over time can develop further. It really depends on what the needs are so there may be a little research that needs to happen (ie: which school? what are their needs? what can we do?) How about getting together again on December 17th, 6:30pm @ RTKL office (same office is before)? From this meeting, together we can come up with a plan of action for our local initiative focused on Education. Between now and then, I would like to ask the following: 1. Think about schools you may already know about and come prepared (or send a reply to all to this email) to describe the needs that you may have observed already. 2. Let me know if you would be interested in leading this effort. There's a lot of potential and energy here, now we need someone who are interested in keeping the momentum going. This individual would organize the effort and group. They wouldn't and shouldn't be doing this on their own as you have the resources of this group (both ideas and manpower). Feel free to contact me if you have questions and what this may specifically entail and/or if you are interested in this. I'm really looking forward to how this develops.
