Apple iPad mini in testing stage, says research firm

(CNET) – A smaller iPad is undergoing tests, a market researcher says, adding fuel to rumors about a downsized Apple tablet.

“Smaller iPads…are still in the testing stage; whether or not these prototypes will enter mass production remains unknown,” TrendForce, a Taipei-based market research and consulting firm, said today.

The impact of a small iPad would be felt mostly in 2013, TrendForce said. “If production ensues, the release time will possibly be in 4Q12, right before Christmas. With a smaller size and a resolution of 1024×768, as opposed to iPad 3’s 2048×1536, the small iPad will not hurt iPad 3’s sales in 2012 and will have a bigger impact in 2013,” according to TrendForce.

If a so-called iPad-Mini materializes, analysts expect it to have a 7.85-inch display compared with the iPad 2’s 9.7-inch screen.

TrendForce also offered its forecast for the 2012 tablet market, which is expected to grow 53 percent over 2011 to 94.4 million units. Apple will control the lion’s share of the market due to its technological lead. “Apple’s high tablet market share can be attributed to its tablet competitors failing to catch up with the iPad’s advancements,” TrendForce said.

And the iPad 3 will only solidify this trend. “The iPad 3 will further secure [Apple's] leading status,” TrendForce said. “The only concern is that iPad 3’s high resolution panel comes with a low yield rate; whether or not the panel production will be enough to supply the market demand remains to be seen.”

The literal laptop: New jeans have built-in keyboard, mouse and speakers

If you struggle to spend more than a few moments away from your computer then a new invention could be for you.

That’s because a pair of Dutch inventors have developed a set of jeans that give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘laptop’.

The jeans, known as Beauty and the Geek, come with a fully functional keyboard, mouse and speakers integrated into the upper leg of the fabric and are the idea of design company Nieuwe Heren, run by Erik de Nijs and Tim Smit.

The duo handmade the trousers themselves and they are designed to give a user ease of movement while still being in control of the computer.

‘They’re not that heavy,’ de Nijs told WebProNews. ‘With the flexible keyboard, small speakers, and small mouse, they are only a little bit heavier than your regular jeans.’

He added: ‘The idea was that you could log in to your computer and control it without sitting in a closed environment behind your desk.’

The jeans are of a modern style and have a back pocket that has been specially designed to cover the mouse, which uses an elastic wire to stay attached.

They stay connected to the laptop via wireless technology in a USB device and are expected to retail at around £250 – if they ever make it onto the market.

De Nijs added: ‘The whole project is too complex and we don’t have enough money right now to get it ready for the market.’ / dailymail.co.uk

‘Must-have’ gadgets at world’s biggest mobile show

Participants throng around exhibits at the 2011 Mobile World World congress in Barcelona.

(CNN) — Mobile World Congress is the world’s largest mobile phone trade show, held every year in Barcelona. It is the venue for manufacturers like Nokia, HTC, LG, and Samsung to reveal the must-have mobile devices and services of the year.

This year is likely to be no different with big launches expected from all the major players except Apple.

So what can we expect? Some phone makers have already announced their MWC line up, some have hinted, others have been rumored. Talking to sources, joining the dots, and getting the word on the street, this is what is expected at the show:

Nokia
Nokia is rumored to be launching a number of handsets at MWC this year. Some will focus on emerging markets (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), while the others, the developed ones. The phones you are most likely to be interested in will be a European version of the recently announced Nokia Lumia 900, and a low end Lumia; the Nokia Lumia 610. Both models will work with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system.

HTC
We are expecting three handsets from the Taiwanese company; The HTC One X, The HTC One S, and the HTC One V. The top-of-the-range One X will feature the new Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and run Android, while Pocket-lint has confirmed with sources that the One V will be a music-focused device aimed at men and similar to the more female friendly (if that is possible) HTC Rhyme that is already on the market.

Samsung
Although Samsung was expected to launch the Samsung Galaxy S III at MWC this year, the company has now confirmed that it won’t. With a number of pre-MWC launches already detailed, Samsung is expected instead to focus on tablets at the show. If rumors are to be believed, it will launch a 10.1-inch version of the Samsung Galaxy Note announced in September 2011. The difference from all the other tablets it sells? It will have a built-in stylus.

LG
Following Samsung’s lead with the Galaxy Note, LG has announced its LG Optimus Vu prior to the show. A cross between a phone and a tablet, it will measure 139.6mm x 90.mm, meaning it’s going to be one for those with big hands and big pockets. There are also rumors that the company will announce a follow up to the LG Optimus 2X called the 3X. Expect it to have a quad-core processor too.

Research In Motion
BlackBerry maker RIM has said that there will be no new hardware at the show this year, but that it will be showing off the new PlayBook 2.0 operating system and the software operating system, BB OS 10, that it hopes will power its new phones expected later in the year.

Panasonic
Having just announced a new waterproof and dustproof phone called the Eluga, Panasonic has also confirmed it has a second handset in the pipeline to launch at MWC. It will feature a dual-core processor, OLED screen and will run Android.

Fujitsu
Japanese brand Fujitsu has confirmed that it will be launching phones in Europe following its success in Japan. The company has yet to announce which models it will be bringing the continent, however the smart money is on the waterproof quad-core Tegra 3 powered Android smartphone it announced at CES in Las Vegas in January.

Sony (aka Sony Ericsson)
Trying to pinpoint a Sony phone destined for Mobile World Congress is as hard as Sony Ericsson’s transitions to Sony. We are expecting a European launch for the already announced (at CES) Sony Ericsson Xperia S though. Rumors and leaked internet photos suggest maybe a bigger screen version too, as well as an array of other Android devices.

Motorola
Motorola’s MWC plans are even quieter than Sony’s with the company traditionally focusing on CES in Las Vegas to launch many of its first-half-of-the-year handsets. There is a suggestion that Motorola has teamed up with Intel to launch one of the first Intel-powered smartphones, but that is still to be confirmed. Motorola doesn’t have a press conference at the show, but Intel does.

Boy, 17, becomes first to be CANED for calling a woman a prostitute on Facebook

• Teenager secretly photographed a woman at her office and posted it online

A teenager will be beaten with two strokes of a cane for calling a woman a prostitute on Facebook, a court has ruled.

The 17-year-old, from Zimbabwe, is believed to be the first in the southern African nation to be punished for making such a comment on the site.

The boy, from the rural town of Chiredzi, admitted using his mobile phone to photograph a woman talking on the phone at her office without her knowledge.

He then posted the photo online with a caption saying she was ‘a typical Chiredzi prostitute’, in the local Shona language, on February 6.

The woman saw the photo as the pair were friends on Facebook and called police, who arrested the boy. His Facebook page has now been removed.

In mitigation, the boy told the judge he was not familiar with the social networking site, was an orphan and the main source of income for his family, RadioVop Zimbabwe said.

However, magistrate Tinashe Ndokera found the boy guilty of ‘criminal assault’. He ordered him to be caned twice.

Corporal punishment is still legal in Zimbabwe for boys under the age of 18.

It is also used as a discipline measure in homes and schools as well as in the penal system.

Article 353 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act says ‘moderate corporate punishment’ maybe used but ‘not exceeding six strokes’ and it must be ‘inflicted in private in a manner and place and by a person prescribed by the court’.

The boy must also be certified by a doctor as fit to receive the punishment and his parent or guardian is entitled to be present. / dailymail.co.uk

Evanescence was founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. After recording private albums, the band released their first full-length album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Fallen sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards.

Evanescence’s major label debut single “Bring Me to Life”, featuring guest vocals from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones, was a global hit for the band and reached number 5 on the American Billboard Hot 100 It provided Evanescence with their first UK number-one single, where it stayed for four weeks from June–July 2003. The song also became the official theme for WWE No Way Out 2003.

The equally popular “My Immortal” peaked at number 7 in the U.S. and UK charts, and both songs were featured in the soundtrack for the action movie Daredevil. “Bring Me to Life” was recognized at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004, where the band won the Best Hard Rock Performance and Best New Artist awards and were nominated for two others.

The two other singles off Fallen are “Going Under” (#5 U.S. Modern Rock Tracks, #8 UK Charts) and “Everybody’s Fool” (#36 U.S. Modern Rock Tracks,^] #23 UK Charts); all were promoted by a music video.

A year later, Evanescence released their first live album, Anywhere but Home, which sold more than one million copies worldwide. In 2006, the band released their second studio album, The Open Door, which sold more than six million copies.

The line-up of the group has changed several times: David Hodges leaving in 2002, co-founder Moody left in 2003 (mid-tour), bassist Will Boyd in 2006, followed by guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray in 2007. The last two changes led to a hiatus, with temporary band members contributing to tour performances. Billboard ranked Evanescence #71 on the Best Artists of the Decade chart.

Announced in June 2009, the newest line-up of the band eventually returned with Evanescence, their self-titled third studio album, and it was released on October 11, 2011. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 127,000 copies in sales.The album also debuted at #1 on four other different Billboard charts; the Rock Albums, Digital Albums, Alternative Albums, and the Hard Rock Albums charts. The first single, “What You Want”, was released on August 9, 2011. The second single, “My Heart Is Broken”, is getting airplay  all over the world right now.

On October 12, it was announced that the album will top the Billboard 200 on October 16, 2011 selling more than 110,000 copies in the United States. On October 19, 2011, the album topped the Billboard 200 selling more than 127,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan and it became Evanescence’s second album to debut at number one on the same chart. It also managed to top the Digital Albums, Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and the Hard Rock Albums chart in the same country

The World Concert tour for Evanescence will also continue with concerts in the United States, Asia and Europe. Singer Amy Lee further revealed that the band will play songs from all three albums and stated :

“We’re definitely focusing mainly on the new material. We’re really excited about that music the most — obviously it’s the newest — but of course we’ll be playing some from both of our other albums too. I guess I’d say in general, our show’s on the heavy-energy side, so we’ll be running around singing a lot of fast songs.

GENEVA DEBUT FOR LIGHTER, MORE POWERFUL FERRARI CALIFORNIA WITH NEW “HANDLING SPECIALE” PACKAGE

Maranello, February 2012– The Geneva Motor Show will see the official debut of the new version of the Ferrari California, production of which has already commenced, with a reduction of weight of 30 kg and an increase in power output of 30 CV.

The Ferrari California’s GDI V8 now delivers 490 hp with maximum torque of 505 Nm at 5,000 rpm, thanks to new exhaust manifolds and engine mapping. The torque curve has also been modified and is higher across the engine’s generous rev range.

Cutting-edge aluminium fabrication techniques and construction technologies used by the Scaglietti Centre of Excellence in the manufacture of the Ferrari California’s chassis, have led to an overall reduction of 30 kg in the car’s weight without impinging in any way on its structural rigidity and performance.

These enhancements have improved the Ferrari’s California’s performance, reducing its 0-100 km/acceleration time to 3.8 seconds. This heightens its sporty feel without detracting from the mission and character of a car that has won universal acclaim for its performance and exceptional versatility resulting from its retractable hard top and 2+ seating.

To meet the needs of clients desiring a more dynamic, yet not overly extreme, driving experience, an optional Handling Speciale package has been developed which encompasses modifications to the suspension set-up that minimise body roll and make the car even more responsive to driver inputs.

The Handling Speciale package includes Magnetorheological dampers controlled by an even faster ECU (-50% response time) running patented Ferrari software. The package also features stiffer springs for more precise body control combined with a comfortable ride. Lastly, the California benefits from faster turn-in with smaller steering wheel angles thanks to a new steering box with a 10 per cent quicker steering ratio.

All these new features combine to underscore the California’s sporty prowess without affecting its high-performance grand touring vocation – an achievement very much in line with Ferrari’s DNA.

The technical features are matched by a new, even more extensive choice of colours developed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, including two-tone finishes, three-layer paint technology and modern re-interpretations of classic colour schemes which increase the exclusive personalisation possibilities even further. In addition, the Ferrari California benefits from the free seven-year standard maintenance programme.

The availability of the lighter and more powerful vehicle, along with the optional Handling Speciale package, varies according to each market with first deliveries scheduled for Europe.
