Congressional Black Caucus Statement on Trump’s Unlawful Voter Suppression Executive Order

Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement on Trump’s Unlawful Voter Suppression Executive Order:

“Right now, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are deploying every tactic imaginable to suppress the power of the people in a desperate effort to maintain control in Washington. The executive order signed by President Trump is an unlawful and unconstitutional attempt to dictate who in this country is allowed to vote.

“This sweeping order would allow the Trump Administration to unilaterally determine voter eligibility, intimidate state election officials through politically motivated investigations, and jeopardize the privacy of millions of law-abiding Americans. It would also disenfranchise Black and other minority voters, women, young people, individuals with disabilities, and older Americans.

“The order directs federal agencies to compile lists of eligible voters in each state and instructs the U.S. Postal Service to distribute mail ballots only to so-called ‘verified’ voters, which raises serious concerns about access, fairness, and federal overreach.

“Donald Trump and Republicans know their policies have failed the American people. That is why they are working to weaken the Voting Rights Act and advance voter suppression legislation like the SAVE Act in a continued effort to cling to power.

“There is no scenario in which this unlawful, anti-democratic, and authoritarian executive order will not go unchallenged to the fullest extent of the law.”

NAACP Calls for Fair Elections Practices in Response to Trump Executive Order Limiting Mail-in Voting

President Trump signed an executive order limiting mail-in ballots to an approved list of absentee voters. The Department of Homeland Security in collaboration the Social Security Administration have been tasked with creating the approved list of voters who will receive a mail-in ballot by the U.S. Postal Service. The executive order also threatens to withhold federal funding for any state who does not comply.
Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO shared the following response:
"Americans in every corner of our country, rural and urban, Black and white, rich and poor, healthy and infirm, civilian and servicemember, have participated in mail-in voting for decades without issue. Trump himself cast a mail-in ballot in Florida's most recent elections. This executive order is a sham. Like mid-decade racial gerrymandering, the unlawful seizing of ballots in Fulton County, Georgia, and the SAVE Act's modern-day poll tax requirements, this executive order is intended to sow chaos and discourage voter participation in the midterm elections. We will continue to turn to the courts to ensure that everyone can have voice in our elections."

POP CHAIRMAN LAWRENCE HAMM TO VISIT SITE OF KING SHOOTING ON ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ASSASSINATION

People’s Organization For Progress chairman Lawrence Hamm will visit the site where Dr Martin Luther King Jr was shot and killed on the anniversary of his assassination.

Hamm will be flying to Memphis, Tennessee tomorrow to participate in a commemoration of the life of the slain civil rights leader that will take place at the National Civil Rights Museum.

The museum is located at the former Lorraine Motel where King was shot and killed. Tomorrow will mark the 58th anniversary of his assassination.

Dr King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis. He was shot after 6:00pm while standing on the balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Motel. King was pronounced dead at 7:05pmat St Joseph Hospital.

“The People’s Organization For Progress is sending me to the King commemoration taking place at the site of his assassination to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the goals and ideals for which he stood,” Hamm stated.

“This visit is especially important at this time since everything that Dr King fought for including racial equality, economic justice, civil rights, voting rights, human rights, and peace are under attack from President Trump, the MAGA Republican Congress, and the ultra right wing super majority on the Supreme Court,” he said.

“The Trump Administration is trying to destroy the last vestiges of everything Dr King and the Civil Rights Movement fought for and achieved,” he said.

At the time of his death King was in Memphis to lend his support to the city’s striking sanitation workers who were trying to organize a union and negotiate for higher wages and safer working conditions.

He was also planning a Poor People’s March that was to take place during June of that year in Washington DC.

“We believe that King was assassinated because he was trying to build a movement to end poverty, racial and economic inequality, and the war in Vietnam,” Hamm said.

“He was expanding the scope of his movement from civil rights to human rights. And he became increasingly critical of the capitalist economic system,” he said.

“Dr King called for a redistribution of power and wealth in this country and the transformation of our socioeconomic system. This is no secret. It’s in his speeches, his writings, and his books,” he said.

“He was seen as a threat to the system by many of those in power. I believe that’s why they killed him,” he said.

“Dr King his gone but his struggle continues. The best way to honor him is for those of us who are here to continue his fight for justice,” Hamm said.

The People’s Organization For Progress has celebrated King’s birthday and commemorated the anniversary of his assassination since the organization was founded in 1982.

HBCUs Compete for Over $500,000 and National Championship Title at 37th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge

Teams from 32 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have earned spots in the National Championship Tournament of the 37th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), America's premier academic competition for HBCUs. Top scholars will compete next month for the HCASC championship and a $100,000 grand prize, part of more than $500,000 in institutional grants Honda will award to participating HBCUs this year.
The "Thrilling 32" HBCU teams excelled in February's national qualifying tournaments and now advance to the 2026 HCASC National Championship Tournament, held near the regional corporate headquarters of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in Torrance. A No Kings III March And Rally to protest policies of the Trump administration will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, 12:00 noon, at the Lincoln Statue, 12 Springfield Avenue, in Newark, New Jersey.

“The purpose of this march is to protest the racist, fascist, and unjust policies at home and abroad of President Trump, his administration, the Republican controlled Congress, and the ultra conservative U.S. Supreme Court,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.

The march is sponsored by People’s Organization For Progress (POP) and co-sponsored by the Martin Luther King People’s Convention for Justice and Resistance Planning Committee.

Thus far 41 organizations have endorsed the march. Hamm said he has been asked “why are you marching.”

“We are marching against Trump’s attempts to become a dictator, his criminality, his administration’s flagrant violations of the law and the constitution, his blatant, breathtaking and boundless corruption, and his efforts to repress and crush dissent,” Hamm said.

“We have a number of demands which include an immediate end to the illegal, unjust and immoral war in Iran, abolishing ICE, releasing all of the Epstein files, removal of all federal troops and national guard from our cities, impeaching Trump, members of his administration and Supreme Court justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito,” he said.

“We are marching for an end to Trump’s tariffs which are driving up the cost of living, an increase in the minimum wage to $20 an hour, restoration of federal budget cuts and DOGE cuts, rehiring of laid off and fired federal workers, the payment of the TSA workers,” he said.

“We also demand congressional support of pro-labor and union organizing legislation, free college, abolition of student debt, universal healthcare/medicare for all, and for millionaires and billionaires to pay their fare share of taxes,” he said.

“We are marching to demand that the president and his administration cease all efforts aimed at interfering with, impeding, sabotaging or canceling the congressional midterm elections. We demand the return to Fulton County, Georgia the ballots illegally seized by the Trump administration,” he said.

“We demand Congress vote against Trump’s Save Act, an immediate halt to all efforts to end mail-in ballots, the passage of the John Lewis voting rights acts at the state and federal level, the passage of same day voter registration legislation, and overturning the Citizens United Supreme Court decision to get big money out of our elections,” Hamm said.

“We are marching for the prosecution of ICE agents responsible for the deaths of Alex Pretty, Renee Good, Keith Porter, Jean Wilson Brutus and all victims of ICE, an end to illegal detentions and deportations, the removal of ICE from our airports and our communities, the elimination of all warehouse detention centers and a halt to the opening and construction of new ones , the closure of Delaney Hall in Newark, and dropping of charges against Congresswoman Monica McIver,” he said.

“We are marching against Trump’s racist, white supremacist and anti-black policies. He has targeted the African American community in a particularly destructive way. Trump and his racist and fascist movement have accelerated a sixty year long attack on Black people the goal of which is to roll back the progress we made fighting against the racial inequality, injustice, segregation, discrimination and oppression in this country,” he said.

“We demand an end to the
attacks on African Americans and our voting rights, civil rights, human rights, and civil liberties. We are marching to restore affirmative action and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs, the rehiring of all workers, including the 300,000 black women who lost their jobs as a result of the elimination of those programs,” he said.

“We are protesting to demand the reopening and re-staffing of civil rights divisions and offices in all government agencies, the passage of slavery reparations legislation at the state and federal levels, the passage of anti-police brutality legislation including establishment of police review boards with subpoena, investigatory and disciplinary powers, and an end to ongoing discrimination and inequality in housing, employment, education, health care and other areas of society,” he said.

“Two years ago the FBI and Department of Homeland security said the greatest threat to public safety in America was racist, white supremacist, domestic terror and violence. The Trump administration has attempted to erase this fact, but racist violence and bias attacks are on the rise,” Hamm said.

“We are marching to demand that the Department of Justice focus its effort on stopping these racist attacks on African Americans and other people rather than looking for some imaginary “antifa” organization. We demand a halt to attempts by Trump’s Department of Justice to drop charges against police officers that killed George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other victims of police brutality,” he said.

“We demand an end to book banning, an immediate halt to all attempts to remove Black history and Black studies curriculum, programs, courses and departments from our schools, colleges and universities, the full implementation of the Amistad African American history law throughout the state of New Jersey, and removal of all statues and names associated with slavery and the confederacy from all government buildings, parks, and streets,” he said.

“We are marching to oppose government policies and legislation that discriminate, penalize or harm people because of their race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, age, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, or gender. We are marching against attempts to deny, limit, or eliminate women’s equality and reproductive rights. We demand an end to any policies, laws and legislation that will adversely affect or deny the rights of the LGBTQ community,” he said.

“We are marching for a just, fair, and peaceful foreign policy that respects human rights, a halt to U.S. support for Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinians and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, and an end to the blockade and sanctions against Cuba and the normalization of relations,” he said.

“We demand an end to the illegal detention of President Maduro and his wife and their return to Venezuela, the return of money, oil, and resources stolen by the United States from Venezuela, an end to U.S. imperialist domination and repression in Haiti, an end to U.S. support for war and genocide in the Congo, Sudan, and other African countries, and an end to the use of nuclear weapons,” Hamm said.

The board of Jazz Power Initiative (JPI), is pleased to announce the honorees for the Syncopated Celebration 2026 fundraiser, scheduled for May 14 at 6:00 pm at Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space, 250 West 95th Street, Manhattan.
WBGO President & CEO Steven A. Williams, who joined the iconic radio station and global jazz leader nearly six years ago, will receive the Rothman Family Syncopated Partnership Award.
Mr. Williams, a dedicated jazz enthusiast and self-described “radio guy,” credits his family's musical legacy, especially his grandfather, who introduced him to jazz, for inspiring his passion for music and education.
As WBGO’s leader, Mr. Williams is dedicated to maintaining the station's 47-year legacy of curating, promoting, presenting, and preserving this unique African American music genre, and honoring the creative talents who have inspired generations of musicians worldwide. Through its daily programming and knowledgeable on-air personalities, WBGO has built a global community of enthusiasts who help sustain the station’s independence.

This year’s Changemaker Award will be presented to Lakecia Benjamin, a six-time Grammy Award nominee, and New York-based saxophonist, arranger, composer, and educator.

Ms. Benjamin, a respected musician and bandleader who grew up in Washington Heights, is recognized for pushing musical boundaries and developing a distinctive jazz style that draws from R&B, Latin, and funk influences. The New York Times wrote, “...her sound feels rooted in tradition, yet broad enough to encompass R&B and Latin music; its pronounced funk suggests allegiances to hip-hop and dance.”

A powerhouse virtuoso, Lakecia Benjamin has performed with Clark Terry, Terri Lyne Carrington, Gregory Porter, Missy Elliott, Eli Yamin, and Alicia Keys. She studied with jazz veterans Billy Harper, Reggie Workman, Bob Stewart, and Buster Williams, and was mentored by Gary Bartz.

“I love what Jazz Power Initiative stands for and its mission,” says Lakecia. “It resonates deeply with me, especially since JPI and I are repping Washington Heights! I’m so honored to be recognized by an organization that is very special to me and to the jazz community at large.”

Council Member Carmen De La Rosa will receive the Miranda Family Champion of Arts and Culture Award in recognition of her leadership and support for Northern Manhattan’s arts and cultural landscape through legislation, discretionary funding, and capital investments.

Since entering public service, Council Member De La Rosa has advocated for economic justice and against racism and xenophobia. In 2021, she became the first Dominican woman elected to represent New York’s District 10 at City Hall, expanding her focus to include criminal justice reform, workers’ rights, affordable housing and tenant protections, climate justice, taxing the wealthy, LGBTIA rights, and other significant social justice policies.

“I am honored to be Jazz Power Initiative's Miranda Family Champion of Arts and Culture Award recipient. Supporting organizations like Jazz Power Initiative and investing in Uptown's artistic and cultural community uplifts the talent at the heart of our vibrant district, while removing barriers to entry for our youth. Sisters Network® Inc. (SNI), the nation’s leading voice for Black breast cancer survivors is proud to announce the 16th Annual Stop the Silence® National African American Breast Cancer 5K Walk/Run. This year’s theme; “The Power of Pink, The Spirit of Strength.” The highly anticipated 5K Walk/Run will be hosted in Houston, TX., on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Tom Bass Regional Park, 3452 Fellows Rd., from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
Regular registration will be open from February 4th to April 18, 2026. The fee is $45/individual and $450/team for of ten. A portion of the funds raised from the walk support the Karen E. Jackson Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP). Established in 2006, BCAP provides much-needed financial support to survivors and pays for 3D mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women nationwide. To date, BCAP has provided over $2 million dollars in financial support and early detection 3D screenings. Participants can register at www.stopthesilencewalk.org.
Black women are 42% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women. Black women under 35 are diagnosed with breast cancer at 2 times the rate of White women and die at three times the rate.
First launched in April 2010, the Stop the Silence® 5K Walk/Run is the first and only national breast cancer walk hosted by a Black-founded organization specifically for Black women. The historic walk is hosted during National Minority Health Awareness month and welcomes over 3,000 participants from around the United States who come together to walk in honor, memory, and celebration of the women they love who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Now in its 16th year, the Stop the Silence Walk is a living reminder of what happens when Black women choose community over fear and action over silence. The Power of Pink, The Spirit of Strength, is more than a theme. It symbolizes the power of love we wrap around survivors and the strength and courage it takes to keep showing up for ourselves and each other. Nigerian bodybuilder Andrew Jacked ( Chinedu Andrew Obiekea) came out on top at the 2026 Arnold Classic! He took home the title and a $750,000 prize. Andrew Jacked faced remained in stiff competition with former Mr. Olympia champion Hadi Choopan, fan favorite Nick Walker, who won the Arnold title back in 2021, and 2019 Mr Olympia Brandon Curry.

CALLS FOR NATIONAL JESSE JACKSON VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will start its Empowerment Saturdays Voter Registration Drive today, Saturday, March 7, 2026, 3:00pm to 5:00pm on the corner of Broad and Market Streets (near 777 Broad Street) in Newark, New Jersey.

“POP will start registering voters on Saturday because it is the anniversary of Bloody Sunday when 600 civil rights marchers were attacked and beaten by state troopers and sheriff’s deputies while trying to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama on March 7, 1965,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.

“When they attempted to cross that bridge they were marching for voting rights and to protest the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson who was killed by police,“ Hamm said.

“Jackson had been killed the previous month during a peaceful protest for voting rights. During the march many were hurt including John Lewis and Amelia Boynton Robinson,” he said.

“However, their struggle was not in vain because the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson five months later on August 6, 1965,” he said

“Empowerment Saturday is extremely important to me. You see, we do voter registration because many people suffered and died so that we could have the right to vote,” Steven Hatcher, who leads the POP voter registration team, stated.

“We want to make sure that as many people as possible are able to do so,” Hatcher said.

“In addition, we are calling this year’s effort the Jesse Jackson Voter Registration Drive in his honor because he continued the fight for civil rights, voting rights, and human rights after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King,” he said.

“We would like to see what we are doing at the local level to become a national effort. We would like to see a National Jesse Jackson Voter Registration Drive,” he said.

“We believe this is appropriate because he inspired millions of people to register and vote, particularly during his 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns,” he said.

Hamm said that he plans to attend Jackson’s funeral on Saturday in Chicago.

He also said that he will be leaving Chicago to go to Selma, Alabama to participate in the annual march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge that commemorates what happened on Bloody Sunday.

“We will start registering voters this weekend and we will continue to do so every Saturday, weather permitting, until the cutoff date for registration in October when the drive will end,” he said.

“Voter registration takes on increased importance in our current environment especially when there are racist and fascist forces in this country that are trying to place limits on our right to vote,” he said.

“There are Trump administration policies, court decisions, and legislation at federal and state levels designed to interfere with, impede, and even prevent some people from voting,” he said.

Hamm said the U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit to force New Jersey to give up its list of registered voters to the federal government is one such effort.

“We are opposed to this attempt to seize the state’s voter rolls. We believe that the Trump administration will use that information to engage in some form of voter suppression during the midterm elections,” he said.

POP is a grassroots, all volunteer organization that works for racial, social, economic justice and peace. Voter education, registration, and participation, have been key activities of the group since it was founded forty-four years ago.

Statement by Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress.
The People’s Organization For Progress is unequivocally opposed to the U.S. war against Iran. This war is one of the most stupid, dangerous, and tragic actions taken by the Trump administration so far, and should immediately be brought to an end.
Not one more person should die in this war. Turn the ships around and bring our troops home now.
We are opposed to this war as are the majority of Americans. We don’t want another war for oil. We don’t want another regime change war. We don’t want another forever war like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam. We want peace.
It is an illegal war since it is not a war declared by Congress. According to the Constitution it is Congress, not the President, who has the power to declare war.
This is a war of imperialist aggression. Iran did not attack the United States and posed no threat to this country. The U.S. attacked Iran first. In this conflict it is our country that is the aggressor.
Dr Martin Luther King when discussing the Vietnam War said the greatest purveyor of violence in the world was the U.S. government. That was true then and it is true today.
The U.S. is the purveyor of state terror. The Trump administration acts like a mafia state with little regard for domestic and international law. He kidnaps Venezuela’s president and holds him for ransom, for a cut of the oil business.
He kills the president of Iran, knock him off to get him out of the way. He strangles countries like Cuba with economic sanctions, so he can take over their territory.
This war is totally unnecessary and in part is one of Trump’s own making. It has already caused the needless loss of not only American and Iranian lives but also the lives of people in other countries in the region.
POP opposes the war with Iran because it is paid for with funds that could have been used for our domestic needs, such as health care, education, jobs, and housing. It is not only paid for in tax dollars it is paid for with lives.
Rich people benefit from these wars but their children don’t fight in them. Barron Trump will not be fighting in Iran. It is the sons and daughters of the working class, poor folk, black people, Latinos, and other minorities who make up the majority of those who will fight and die in Iran and other wars for empire.
Trump’s recent attack on Iran began a few days ago but it has already become a regional conflagration. In a region already roiling from Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinians, and Trump’s attack on Iran last year, the U.S. and Israel decided to strike Iran again.
In retaliation Iran has struck back at U.S. forces and also bombed Israel, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. This conflict has the potential of escalating further and dragging us into a world war.
Despite Trump’s pronouncements, he bears responsibility for bringing the U.S. into this conflict. He says this is about nuclear weapons. However, he withdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal that was in place that kept Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
However, most people know this war is not about nuclear weapons. Iran is one of the major producers of oil. This is yet another war for oil. This is a war about U.S. dominance and empire.
Iran is the biggest obstacle to Israel’s hegemony in the region. Israel has been urging the U.S. to go to war with Iran for decades. This war is about Israel’s hegemony in the region and the establishment of Netanyahu’s goal of a “greater Israel,” which he announced at the United Nations.
Many understand that this war is about distraction. This is a war to draw our attention away from the Epstein files, which is shaping up to be perhaps one of the biggest scandals in American history. A scandal which many believe could implicate President Trump and several of his cabinet members in various types of criminal activity.
The People’s Organization For Progress urges people to take every action necessary to bring this unjust war with Iran to an end. People should utilize every tool available to express their opposition to this war. In the fight for peace there is something everyone can do.
We should take to the streets and protest now, and keep the protests up until the war in Iran ends. Demonstrations took place this weekend in cities and towns across the country.
There will be another massive wave of No Kings protests across the U.S. on Saturday, March 28th. A No Kings protests is scheduled for that day beginning 12:00 noon at the Lincoln Statue, 12 Springfield Avenue in Newark, NJ.
People should participate in these protests and use them as an opportunity to demonstrate opposition to Trump administration’s foreign policy toward Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, Congo, Sudan, South Africa, and other countries.
We should engage in economic initiatives such as boycotts, divestment, and sanctions. We should boycott and divest from companies whose products and services are used to support these unjust wars.
We should pressure our elected officials to take a stand against the war and pass legislation to bring it to an end. We should write, call, text, email, and meet with our congressional representatives and let them know about our opposition to the war.
POP calls on all congressional representatives to vote in favor of the war powers resolutions sponsored by U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA).
These bills require the removal of U.S. Armed Forces from the conflict in Iran and that future military action against Iran must be authorized by Congress.
We must use our votes for peace. We should vote for anti-war candidates and vote against those that are pro-war.
As we fight to end the war in Iran let us also work to change our political-economic system, an imperialist system, that profits from and drives us to war. These wars are not only policy choices they are systemic in nature.

The National Association of Black Bookstores (NAB2) today released its inaugural State of the Black Bookstore Report alongside the launch of the National Black-Owned Bookstore Directory, marking the first comprehensive, data-driven snapshot of Black-owned bookstores nationwide.
Together, the report and directory document the scope and significance of Black-owned bookstores across the United States, while also examining the economic, structural, and systemic challenges many continue to face. The findings confirm both a meaningful increase in the number of Black-owned bookstores in recent years and persistent barriers that threaten long-term sustainability.
"The growth of Black-owned bookstores across the country reflects the strength and relevance of these institutions today," said Kevin Johnson, Founder and Board Chair of NAB2. "This report establishes a clear national record of where Black bookstores are operating and how they function. By bringing this information together, we are creating a foundation that supports their continued presence and informs how the industry engages with them."
For generations, Black-owned bookstores have operated as cultural anchors, literacy centers, and community gathering spaces. The State of the Black Bookstore Report builds on that legacy by offering new national data on bookstore locations, business models, revenue realities, and regional distribution, while elevating the voices and lived experiences of bookstore owners themselves.
The newly launched National Black-Owned Bookstore Directory identifies Black-owned bookstores operating across the country, including brick-and-mortar stores, mobile bookstores, pop-ups, and online sellers. The directory is intended to serve as a public-facing resource for readers, educators, authors, publishers, policymakers, and industry partners, while also functioning as foundational infrastructure for collective advocacy and support.
As one of the nation's longest-operating Black bookstore owners and a member of NAB2's founding board, Yvonne Blake emphasized the historical weight of the moment.
"Black bookstores have always done more with less," Blake said. "We have survived by serving our people, protecting our stories, and holding space when few others would. This report tells the truth plainly. It honors the work that came before us while making clear what must change if these bookstores are going to be here for the next generation."
Key Findings from The State of the Black Bookstore Report include:
There are currently 306 Black-owned bookstores operating in the United States, representing approximately 8% of all independent bookstores nationwide.

Despite recent growth, 90% of Black-owned bookstores report annual revenue under $250,000, and 36% operate without a permanent brick-and-mortar location.

14 states currently have no Black-owned bookstore, highlighting significant geographic gaps in access to Black literary spaces.
The State of the Black Bookstore Report also highlights opportunities for alignment across bookstores, publishers, authors, and institutions committed to equity within the literary ecosystem.

Howard University Announces Dr. Ibram X. Kendi as the Inaugural Carter G. Woodson Endowed Chair in History

Howard University announced Ibram X. Kendi, Ph.D., as the inaugural Carter G. Woodson Endowed Chair in History for the College of Arts and Sciences. Named after the “father of Black history,” the Woodson Chair was created to foster influential, field-defining research and scholarship on Black history, social justice, and American policy which accelerates systemic change and shapes public discourse. The creator of Black History Month, Woodson was a legendary historian, Howard professor, and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The Woodson Chair is underwritten by $3 million in gifts from several key benefactors including donations from the Stupski Foundation.

“The establishment of the Carter G. Woodson Endowed Chair in History affirms Howard University’s enduring responsibility to steward Black history with rigor, integrity, and purpose. Dr. Woodson believed that truth, when carefully studied and widely shared, has the power to liberate minds and transform societies,” said *Wayne A. I. NAACP Honors the Life and Legacy of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., A Son of the Movement

The NAACP mourns the passing of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., a transformative leader whose life's work is deeply woven into the history, mission, and enduring impact of our Association and the nation.
A lifelong soldier for justice, Rev. Jackson emerged from the very soil that nurtured the NAACP for over a century. As a young organizer in the 1960s, he labored alongside NAACP leaders, spoke at several national conventions, marched with our members, and helped expand the national movement for racial equality into a broad, people-powered coalition demanding systemic change.

A prominent civil rights activist has publicly announced his personal endorsement of Analilia Mejia for Congress in the upcoming special Democratic primary election for the House seat formerly held by New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill.

“I am endorsing Analilia Mejia for Congress because I believe that in these challenging times she is the right choice among the candidates running in the special Democratic primary to represent the people of the 11th congressional district of New Jersey,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.

The primary election for that congressional seat is scheduled for Thursday, February 5, 2026. The special general election will take place on Thursday, April 16th. While the names of 13 candidates are on the ballot for the seat, 11 are actively campaigning.

“I am supporting Analilia because it is imperative that Democrats break the stranglehold of the Trump controlled Republicans on Congress and win back Democratic majorities in the House and Senate this year,” Hamm, who has been a candidate for U.S. Senate, said.

“This is critical in creating a bulwark in Congress to stop the juggernaut of Trump’s racist, fascist, and right wing policies. It is also critical in setting the stage to defeat Trump and his MAGA Republicans in the Presidential and congressional elections that will take place in 2028,” he said.

“I am supporting Analilia because she knows this. She understands the assignment. She knows that we are at a critical juncture in this country. She knows that as a congressional representative she must do everything possible to stop our country from sliding into dictatorship under a Trump regime,” he said.

Hamm said that he and Mejia have known each other for a number of years and that they worked together on Bernie Sanders’ campaigns for president. He believes that her experience working with labor and her background as a political activist will help her in Washington’s contentious political environment.

“I am supporting Analilia because now more than ever we need representatives in Congress who are not going to Washington to do business as usual. We need people like Analilia who are going to fight for us, shake things up, shut things down and get things done,” he said.

“I am supporting Analilia because I believe we can trust her. She is not the kind of person who is going to say one thing when she’s around us and then when she gets to Washington say and do something different,” he said.

“I am urging people to vote for Analilia because she can she can take the pressure. She can stand the heat. We don’t need to send anymore Democrats to Washington who break under pressure, sell out their constituents, and vote with Republicans for legislation that will hurt us,” he said.

“I am primarily supporting Analilia because she is running on a progressive agenda that prioritizes the needs of the people over those of the billionaires, big corporations, and banks. I believe that she will go to Washington to fight for working people, poor people, and the middle class who make up the vast majority people in this country,” Hamm said.

“I am supporting Analilia because I believe she will support just, fair, balanced, peaceful, and sane foreign policies. I am confident that she will work with other members of Congress to prohibit U.S. involvement in unjust, forever wars for oil and other natural resources, regime change, genocide, and imperial aggression and expansion,” he said.

“On Election Day, February 5th I urge people to vote for Analilia Mejia for Congress. I urge people to come to the polls in record numbers for the special primary and general elections to ensure her victory, and again in all the midterm congressional elections so we can sweep these Trump Republicans out of office and take back the Congress,” he said.

Lawrence Hamm will attend funeral of civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin

Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will attend funeral services for civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin this weekend.

Ms Colvin was arrested on March 2, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, at the age of 15, for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus to a white woman. This occurred nine months before the arrest of Rosa Parks.

The arrest of Colvin would lead to her becoming a plaintiff in the lawsuit that ultimately came before the United States Supreme. The court ruled in that case that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

Colvin died from natural causes in Texas on January 13, 2026 at the age of 86. Her passing has drawn national attention to the important role she played and the impact of her case in the Civil Rights Movement.

“It was with great sadness that the news of Claudette Colvin’s death was received. She was a trail blazer in the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle for black liberation,” Hamm, who is also a former U.S. Senate candidate, stated.

“I am attending her funeral services not only due to my personal respect for Ms Colvin, but I have been asked to do so on behalf of the members of the People’s Organization For Progress because of our collective admiration for her courage and sacrifice” he said.

“Myself and members of the People’s Organization For Progress were particularly impacted by her death not just because she was a historical figure but also because we got to know her personally,” he said.

“More that a dozen years ago we learned about Ms Colvin’s contribution to our freedom struggle through discussions about her life on WBAI, a progressive radio station in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area,” Hamm said.

“We were able contact Ms Colvin and arrange for her to speak and tell her story at churches, radio stations, and other venues in our region. In this way we got to know her better and she go to know us,” he said.

“Everywhere she spoke she was well received. People were inspired by her story. Some were brought to tears. They were honored to have this civil rights heroine among them,” he said.

Hamm said he would never forget the first time he heard her response to the question of why she refused to give up her seat knowing she was breaking the segregationist law and would go to jail.

“She said I couldn’t get up because I had Harriet Tubman sitting on one shoulder and Sojourner Truth sitting on the other,” he said.

The viewing will be held on Friday, January 23rd, 1:00pm-7:00pm at the Bushelon Funeral Home, 800 14th St. SW, in Birmingham, Alabama. The Funeral Service is on Saturday, January 24th, 11:00 a.m. at Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2135 Jefferson Ave SW, also in Birmingham.

“Our freedom fighter Claudette Colvin has joined the ancestors. However, her contribution to the fight for racial equality and justice will not be forgotten. It will inspire generations to come,” Hamm said.

The Ebony Canal Scores NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding Short Form Documentary

On January 13, 2026, nominations were announced for the 57th Annual NAACP Image Awards, recognizing excellence across film, television, music, literature, and cultural storytelling. Among this year’s honorees is The Ebony Canal, which earned a nomination for Outstanding Short Form Documentary (Film), a significant milestone for this work and for the broader movement to elevate Black maternal health outcomes globally.
The nomination arrives at a time when the urgency of this work remains undeniable. Black and Brown women in the United States are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, according to the CDC and Black infants are over two times more likely to die in their first year of life. That reality has been felt deeply within the maternal health advocacy community following the recent passing of Dr. Janelle Greene Smith, a respected midwife and tireless advocate whose work centered dignity, safety, and access for Black mothers and birthing people. Her legacy continues to shape the conversations and commitments reflected in this film.
Directed by Emmy award-winning Emmai Alaquiva and narrated by EGOT-winning actress Viola Davis, The Ebony Canal examines the systemic factors contributing to Black maternal mortality while centering the lived experiences of four women, their families and healthcare advocates. Since its release, the documentary has been screened in over 14 film festivals globally, produced over 20 private screenings and walked away with Best Short Documentary (Social Impact) at the 2025 Essence Film Festival and received the 2025 Cultural Visionary Award from Urbanworld Film Festival.
The 2026 NAACP Image Awards will reveal winners in select categories during a two-hour televised special airing live on Saturday, February 28, with additional non-televised category announcements taking place throughout the week of February 23–26.

General Mills and UNCF Celebrate 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast

General Mills (NYSE: GIS) presents the 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast in support of UNCF Twin Cities. The event will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Doors open at 6:45 a.m., with breakfast and pre-event programming beginning at 7:30 a.m. Tickets are available at MLKBreakfast.com.

The Minneapolis-based event is one of the nation’s largest annual breakfast celebrations honoring Dr. King. The breakfast supports UNCF’s mission of investing in young men and women in the Twin Cities to help them get to and through college.

NAACP Urges Senate to Act After House Passes Bill to Restore ACA Premium Tax Credits

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) urging the Senate to swiftly pass legislation already approved by the House that would restore enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits, which expired on December 31, 2025.

Without immediate congressional action, millions of Americans are facing sharply higher health insurance premiums in 2026 — premiums that have already more than doubled for many Marketplace enrollees — putting coverage out of reach for working families and risking widespread loss of insurance. Independent analyses project that as many as 8,800 preventable deaths could occur annually due to the resulting health and economic devastation.

Black communities and other communities already experiencing disproportionate health and economic inequities will bear an outsized share of this harm.

"Failure to act is itself a decision — one that carries grave consequences for access to care, health equity, and financial stability for millions of Americans," wrote Johnson. "The Senate has an opportunity to revisit this issue with clarity and to repair the harm caused by inaction. We respectfully urge you to act without delay in bringing the House-passed legislation to the Senate floor for consideration and a vote."

The House of Representatives passed a three-year extension of the ACA premium tax credits on Thursday, Dec. 8. The Senate has several procedural options available, but further delay will only compound the harm families are already experiencing.

Key impacts of inaction include:
Coverage Loss: Millions of people projected to lose health insurance. 170,000+ Black adults would lose health care coverage across 10 major metro areas, according to the Economic Policy Institute.
Economic Harm: Nearly 340,000 jobs nationwide at risk, half in health care. Black families would also pay an additional $740 million in premiums each year.
Racial Inequity: Black Americans and other marginalized communities, already facing higher uninsured rates and chronic health disparities, will be disproportionately harmed.
Health Outcomes: Rising premiums create financial barriers to care, worsening chronic illnesses and long-standing health disparities.

"This vote will be lifesaving," Johnson emphasized. "It will protect American families and the integrity of the health care system. Alternatively, the health and financial cliffs we face as a nation will remain untenable."

The NAACP continues to advocate for policies that advance health equity, eliminate disparities, and ensure access to affordable, high-quality health care for all.

HBCU Executive Leadership Institute Welcomes 2026 Community of Fellows

The HBCU Executive Leadership Institute (HBCU ELI) at Clark Atlanta University today announced its 2026 Community of Fellows, a selective cohort of leaders preparing to serve as the next generation of presidents and senior executives across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), MSIs, and PBIs. Now in its sixth year, more than 40 executive leaders from higher education, business, technology, and non-profit organizations will participate.

Fellows are chosen through a highly competitive, multi-step review designed to identify leaders with demonstrated institutional impact, executive readiness, and a clear commitment to the mission of HBCUs. HBCU ELI's competency-based model is designed to select Fellows annually through a rigorous process, with eligibility requirements that include a minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education or a related field, as well as at least three years in dean-level or equivalent leadership roles.

EBONY Media Debuts EBONY Voices with Short Film Standing in the Ashes, Marking One Year Since Altadena Fires

EBONY Media released Standing in the Ashes: One Year After the Altadena Fires, the first short film in its new multimedia series, EBONY Voices, which spotlights human-interest stories that connect and uplift communities.
Directed by Lyric Perez and produced by EBONY Media Owner and CEO Eden Bridgeman Sklenar and EVP of Editorial Content Cori Murray, Standing in the Ashes marks the one-year anniversary of the Eaton wildfire that devastated parts of Los Angeles County in January 2024. The film centers three long-time Altadena families as they navigate loss, rebuilding, and the decision to remain in a historically Black community disproportionately impacted by the disaster.
"Standing in the Ashes reflects what EBONY Voices was created to do—center humanity, honor legacy, and ensure our communities are not reduced to statistics in moments of crisis," said Eden Bridgeman Sklenar, Owner and CEO of EBONY Media. "These families remind us that rebuilding is not just about homes, but about protecting history, culture, and the right to remain rooted where generations before them built a future."
Standing in the Ashes features Staci and Thomas Andrews; Ronda Carson and her mother, Barbara Carson; and Antoinette "Toni" Bailey-Raines, a community leader recognized as a 2025 EBONY Power 100 Community Crusader for her work co-hosting Altadena Talks, a grassroots radio show and podcast launched in response to the fires.
The Eaton wildfire claimed 19 lives and destroyed or damaged 9,418 homes and buildings. At least 60 percent of the homes affected were Black households. A data study from UCLA's Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies found that 61 percent of Black households in Altadena were located within the fire perimeter, compared with 50 percent of non-Black households. Nearly half of Black households experienced destruction or major damage, and a majority of Black homeowners in the area are over age 65, increasing vulnerability during recovery.

USPS Honors Phillis Wheatley, First Published African American Poet, With 49th Black Heritage Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service is honoring Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784), the first author of African descent in the American Colonies to publish a book, with the 49th stamp in the Black Heritage series. Born in West Africa and brought to Boston on a slave ship, Phillis Wheatley was enslaved but educated in the Wheatley household. Wheatley published her first collection, “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral,” in 1773. This collection showcased her impressive mastery of various poetic forms, including hymns, elegies, and narrative verse, securing her place in history. Freed from slavery that same year, she went on to correspond with figures such as George Washington, who praised her poetic talent.
Wheatley’s legacy continues to inspire generations, earning her the title “the mother of African American literature.” Before the Civil War, abolitionists used her accomplishments to affirm the intellectual capability of people of African descent and argue against slavery. Today schools, libraries, community centers and university buildings across the country have been named for Wheatley, and she has been the subject of numerous inspirational books for children. In 2003, a statue of the poet was included in a new Boston Women’s Memorial. The first full-length scholarly biography of Wheatley was published in 2011, with a second biographical study published in 2023, part of an ongoing effort to recognize her resilience in adversity.

Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp using an existing portrait by Kerry James Marshall.

The Phillis Wheatley stamp will be issued in panes of 20. As a Forever stamp, it will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price.
