In South Africa, tap water is safe to drink in urban areas, but may be contaminated elsewhere and sterilisation is advisable. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally considered safe to eat.

Malaria is a prevalent disease in much of Africa. Be sure to continue with any medication when you return home, as it is generally required up to 4 weeks after travel as well. High risk areas:

Eastern areas bordering Mozambique (mainly Kruger Park) stretching to Messina on Zimbabwean border. Northern portion of KwaZulu Natal bordering Mozambique (mainly Ndumo and Tembe Elephant Park).

Yellow Fever is caused by a virus carried by a species of mosquito, and has been known to occur in certain East African countries. As yellow fever is contagious, many countries require travellers to get a yellow fever inoculation. Travellers should be inoculated at least 10 days prior to travel (a certificate is issued).

The inoculation certificate is not generally required when entering the country in question (e.g. Kenya or Tanzania), but is required for your return to your country of residence. Please consult your Travel Clinic, or doctor, prior to travel.

Bilharzia is a waterborne parasite carried by snails, and occurs in stagnant water of lakes, dams and slow flowing rivers. However, lodges, and guides, will always caution you as to where it is safe to swim. Avoid swimming and paddling in stationary water. Swimming pools which are well-chlorinated and maintained are safe.

If you travel extensively in remote areas, you might also want to consult your Travel Clinic about Hepatitis A and B, and tetanus inoculations.

When on Safari, always ensure that you drink sufficient quantities of water. Day time temperatures can be extreme, even in winter, and you don't want to suffer from dehydration.

Complications from sunburn should also not be ignored – always wear a hat with a brim, and ensure that you carry a good supply of protection cream.

Orphaned baby rhino Gertjie refuses to sleep alone after witnessing his mother's death at the hands of poachers

A baby rhino who was unable to sleep on his own after seeing his mother brutally murdered by poachers has captured the hearts of staff at the endangered species centre documenting his progress.

Gertjie was rescued from the wild on 7 May by staff at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre(HESC) in South Africa after he was found next to his mother's body.

Now almost four-months-old, he is slowly being weaned off his night feeds and is building up his strength with daily walks.

Staff at the centre, which focuses on the conservation of rare, vulnerable or endangered animals, said the baby rhino did not want to leave his mother's side and was “crying inconsolably” before being sedated and transported to the HESC.

In a statement released shortly after discovering the rhino, the HESC said: "A three-month-old baby rhino, anticipated to have been born on [or] around the 19 February, was brought to the HESC after being found next to his dead mother who had been tragically and brutally poached for her horn.

"It was a devastating sight, as the tiny animal would not leave her side, and was crying inconsolably for her.”

Gertjie, or 'Little G' as staff have nicknamed him, spent his first night at the centre with a human minder and a sheep called Skaap, who acts as the surrogate mother to the animals there.

Staff have been taking it in turns to feed the animal every three hours and sleep outside of his room to ensure he is fed at regular intervals. Skaap also spends time in his room and "cleans up after him from time-to-time".

The centre has also set up a live channel so people can watch Gertjie as he spends his days “taking long walks, [having] mud baths and grazing”.

The team are now appealing for donations to help them keep enough fat-free milk in stock. Baby rhinos are only weaned off milk when aged between 15 and 18-months-old, so staff say he will be cared for at HESC until he is ready to be reintroduced into a wildlife reserve.

Microsoft Research released WorldWide Telescope--new, free software that enables users to explore the universe with impressive content from the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center, and other famed ground- and space-based telescopes. Colorful nebulae, distant galaxies, black holes, and radiation clouds are all accessible from your desktop with a few clicks.

The software has been released for free in honor of Jim Gray, a Microsoft researcher who was lost at sea last year.

Google Earth added a similar feature called Google Sky with its Version 4.2 release. Google also offers a browser-based version of Google Sky, while Microsoft requires the download and installation of the WorldWide Telescope software. Google Sky is a bit more user friendly right now, but Microsoft has the advantage of a wealth of content. For example, Google Sky offers infrared, microwave, and historical views of objects in the universe; WorldWide Telescope allows nearly 50 different types of viewing, including infrared dust maps and cosmic microwave background, along with a bevy of other options that I couldn't even begin to explain.Google Sky has the advantage of being quite a bit easier to pick up and use immediately, but in actuality, WorldWide Telescope is a totally different beast. Google Sky is a bonus feature that Google added onto its Earth-imagery application; WorldWide Telescope's primary objective is to create a visual representation of the universe on your desktop. You can peruse telescope images of Earth with WorldWide Telescope, but there's not the detailed satellite imagery of your neighborhood that you get in Google Earth...

2014 has been a terribly year for the rhinos that call #SouthAfrica home.

According to statistics a rhino is killed every seven hours.

#Rhino #poaching is at an all-time high

Botswana has a 'Shoot to kill' policy.

One of the reason's Botswana's poaching levels are so low is that they have zero tolerance when it comes to poachers. Anti-poaching is handled by the Botswana Defense Force, who have a "shoot to kill" policy.

Botswana is also more remote and less populous which helps keep poaching at a minimum.

#Rhinos Without Borders has partnered with and Beyond, who moved rhinos from one of their private reserves to #Botswana in 2011. #Rhinos are sedated and their blood samples studied to make sure they're strong enough to make the trip.

The #rhinos then recover during a six-week quarantine before they're moved by plane to a secret location in #Botswana.

Because rhinos' first instinct is to seek out other herds, and Botswana has a low density of the species, synthesized rhino dung is used to help the relocated animals establish their territory. The process costs about $45,000 per rhino.

The Rhino horn myth

#Rhinos are killed for their horn, which currently sells for $65,000 per kilo (2.2 pounds). The demand is driven primarily by buyers in East Asia, who (inaccurately) ascribe various medicinal cure-alls to the horn.

Huge great white shark stalks kayak in South Africa

The image was taken by researcher Thomas Peschak, who, along with his friend, biologist Michael Scholl, started tracking white sharks from kayaks, as other boats disrupted theshark's natural behaviour with their engines. A number of people have suggested this picture is fake, but Thomas insists it is 100 per cent the real deal.

To capture this image I tied myself to the tower of the research boat Lamnidae and leaned into the void, precariously hanging over the ocean while waiting patiently for a white shark to come along. I wanted to shot a photograph that would tell the story of our research efforts to track white sharks using kayaks. When the first shark of the day came across our sea kayak it dove to the seabed and inspected it from below.

I quickly trained my camera on the dark shadow which slowly transformed from diffuse shape into the sleek outline of a large great white. When the shark’s dorsal fin broke the surface I thought I had the shot, but hesitated a fraction of a second and was rewarded with marine biologist Trey Snow in the kayak turning around to look behind him. I pressed the shutter and the rest was history.

Throughout the day I shot many more images, most showing the kayak following the shark, but all lacked the power of that first image of the great white tracking the kayak.

BLOEMFONTEIN —The number of rhinos illegally hunted in South Africa this year stands at 125, the Department of Environmental Affairs said yesterday.

Spokesperson Albi Modise said the Kruger National Park (KNP) with 75 led in the number of rhinos poached, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 18, Limpopo with 17 and the North West province with 15.

In 2011 South Africa lost 448 rhinos to illegal hunting and the unlawful trade in rhino horn.

Modise said the department was nevertheless encouraged by the increased number of arrests and convictions made this year to counter rhino poaching.

Since January this year 89 people have been arrested for illegal acts relating to rhino horn in the country.

Twenty-nine people were arrested in Mpumalanga, 20 in the KNP, and 15 in the North West province.

In 2011 a total of 232 people were arrested in connection with rhino poaching.

Releasing the latest figures, Modise said the KNP continued to be the centre of illegal rhino killing.

He said a suspected poacher was shot dead in the KNP and two others arrested last week.

A fifth KNP official, stationed at the Pretoriuskop section of the park, had been arrested.

Modise said Sanparks, in conjunction with the police, were working non-stop to determine if there were links with other KNP officials to the two rhino killed in Pretoriuskop last month. The KNP lost 252 rhinos to poaching last year.

Modise urged South Africans to report incidents of rhino poaching by calling 0800205005.

This is pretty remarkable!! If you don't already think animals are far more spiritually advanced than we humans, think again. Stuart Brown describes Norbert Rosing's striking images of a wild polar bear coming upon tethered sled dogs in the wilds of Canada's Hudson Bay.

The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his dogs when the polar bear wandered in, but????

The Polar Bear returned every night that week to play with the dogs.
