Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), an integrated set of recommended crop, soil, water and weed management practices (GAP) that were proven to improve rice productivity and increase profitability. GAP components were introduced to the irrigated rice farmers of Menabe rice hub in Madagascar. Yields increased from 2t/ha to 4t/ha with GAP. The participating farmers share their views and experience with testing good agricultural practices.

Off-season crop diversification
The practice of off-season crops allows a double valorization of the farm and therefore a double annual production for the producers. They are both an additional resource to meet the food needs of the household and a source of additional income for them. Seasonal crop rotation, such as alternating rice and leafy vegetables, and crop diversification are encouraged because of their importance in maintaining soil productivity. This video explains the interests and practices of producers in the Vakinankaratra region, as well as the actions undertaken by AfricaRice regarding off-season crops in this area.

Rice parboiling using GEM
AfricaRice and partners have developed an improved rice parboiling technology called "GEM"-grain quality, energy-efficient, durable material and women-friendly parboiling system that produces rice with better physical, taste and nutritional quality than traditional technology. It helps rural women produce cleaner, higher quality rice at a higher price in the local market, enabling them to improve their economic prospects and build a better future for themselves and their families, as they testify.

Participatory varietal selection (PVS)
Participatory varietal selection (PVS) is an inclusive breeding exercise that involves rice producers in the selection and identification of the right variety for the right environment. PVS is also an important feedback mechanism on the needs and preferences of rice growers and consumers that guides the next generation of rice varietal development. AfricaRice has adopted PVS as a standard protocol to provide rice growers an opportunity to interact and co-develop the new varieties. Regular PVS exercises have contributed for the efficiency of rice breeding program in delivering relevant varieties while it also ensures quick and large scale adoption of the new varieties.

'Smart-valleys’ is a climate-smart, low-cost, participatory approach to develop lowlands for rice-based systems. The approach is being used by farmers in Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Liberia and Sierra Leone and now Cote d’Ivoire. It allows rice yields to double through improved water control, with only limited additional cost for the producers compared to common approaches with high investment costs. Smart-valleys are more sustainable because they are developed and constructed by farmers themselves.

Rice has long been a popular food for some countries in Africa, such as Egypt, where rice yield is one of the highest in the world; Senegal, where the national dish is a delicious combination of rice and fish called ‘chubu jen’; and Madagascar, which has one of the highest per capita consumption of rice in the world.

Rice consumption in Africa is growing faster than that of any other major staple. It is West Africa’s single most important source of dietary energy and the third most important for sub-Saharan Africa.
