The Medical report from Helen Joseph hospital, Dr. Shirley Radcliffe confirming that, Albert Mangwair died from: “Alcohol toxicity” after drinking too much, Over-exhaustion and drugs overdose....The inquest heard that Albert 28, collapsed in the his friends home had been more than five-times the legal S.A drink-drive limit with 416mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in hissystem.... In what can only be described as a star studded affair, the Groove Awards Nomination ceremony on Tuesday Night was graced by the biggest names in the gospel industry. Ranging from old school to new school musicians, producers, radio and TV hosts as well as comedians, the crowd was quite diverse. While newly converted Size 8 strutted her stuff in a more demure look in reflection to her new found faith, veteran Esther Wahome made sure that her beauty queen status was not forgotten as she catwalked in her pageant queen outfit. Hugs were exchanged, jokes were shared, laughter and joy was in the air. It was going to be a good evening. Everyone was excited and anticipating the announcing of the nominees which so far had been a well-kept secret. There is no hiding that being nominated for the groove awards is a big feat in the gospel industry. This is the 9^th year since the inception of Groove Awards which has so far managed to award over 600 artists while promoting many more. And this time, the stakes are much higher. The winners who are to be announced on 1^st June 2013, not only get awards and accolades but also get a chance to take part in the Groove Tour which will involve touring 4 major cities in Kenya, culminating in the hugely popular Groove Party on the New Year’s Eve in Nairobi. Octopizzo, P-Unit and DNA are the highest earners from technology based music distribution platform and online portal dubbed Mdundo.com. The recently developed online platform is geared at presenting an alternative channel for local artistes to market and deliver their music to millions of mobile phone subscribers. Through a recent and ongoing partnership with Samsung Electronics East Africa, customers purchasing the new Galaxy Music handset have been enjoying a five-day premium account from the portal allowing the customers to download all content for free and local artistes to generate revenue from their talent. According to Mdundo.com CEO Gustav Ericsson, a number of local artistes are already lined up, to receive a share of hundreds of thousands of shilling generated during the recent three month pilot period for the portal. “We are constantly looking for new ways to generate revenue for our artists. We are very excited to announce today that we are now set to make our first payment. We aim to fund most of our downloads with different forms of branding and marketing from corporates to our rich and diverse database of users.” Established late last year,they had been providing music scratch cards to artistes distributing music on the platform. The artiste could subsequently sell the cards at concerts, through their own channels and get to keep 100 per cent of the revenue. Band member of P-Unit and Mdundo brand ambassador, Frasha concludes, “I think that this is one of the most innovative ways of selling music, and making our music easily available to our fans. Above all it’s a good revenue stream for the artistes.”
