Naeto C - Kini Big Deal

"Kini Big Deal" by Naeto C is NotJustOk's throwback record for the week

"Kini Big Deal" is one of the records which made Naeto C prominent in the music industry. It was released back in 2008, housed under his first studio album, "You Know My P", a 16-track project released in the same year.

You would agree with me that Naeto C is unarguably of the finest rappers the country has ever produced. Although he's been out of the music scene for a while, you'd be shocked the number of hits he's got in his basket. That will be a topic for another day anyway.

Re-vibe to "Kini Big Deal" and share your thoughts below!

What's your favorite line on the song?

Dr. Sid Talks "The Interesting EP," Ladipoe & Eight Years Of Mavin Records

2020-05-12T17:51:00.001+01:00

Artist Dr. Sid

Dr. Sid Talks "The Interesting EP," Ladipoe & Eight Years Of Mavin Records

The world is going through stuff. I wouldn't tag it "interesting," but what do we do? Run off the cliff of sanity? Plunge our heads into miserliness? What to do, what to do when reality becomes a bad dream we never saw coming?

Musicians don't have the answer. And don't let the prefix fool you: Dr. Sid prefers the microphone to, say, a stethoscope. In 2007, he put himself fully into the music, after a long period of alternating the music with his career as a trained dentist.

So, while we support the relevant experts in fighting this 21st century horror, the musicians –after a brief period of wondering if now's a good time to put out music– have now taken to their catalogs, their intent being the show, simply, must go on. Hence, there's an heavy inflow of new music being released.

Enter Dr. Sid. The long stretches between his music projects might account for some obscurity, the man who gave us "Surulere" never truly lost it. A demonstration of this is his new 5-track EP which literally promises to be interesting.

The Interesting EP is a cocktail of Sid's signature style, the brilliant input of its features (Don Jazzy, EYANGO, M.I Abaga & Ladipoe), and the vibrant sound –created by top tier producers such as Ozedikus, amongst others– that runs through its 16 minutes will have you deep in "a kind of energy," as the artist said to me over the phone.

Edited for clarity, below is a text of that phone conversation I had with Dr. Sid.

When was the idea to do "The Interesting" EP hatched?

I just felt like I needed to put together a body of work and I just put together a collection of songs I'd recorded.

When was this?

Okay, so "That's Interesting", I'd recorded that song about two years ago. And the songs were recorded over the past few years.

What were going for with this project?

I just work and create music, at the end of day, it's a simple situation of you create music, and put together a collection. To me, my music has always expressed versatility, on different sounds and genres, so that's pretty much my thing. If you listen to my previous projects, you get that. And this one's no different.

Tell us about "It's Interesting"

So that song was recorded in 2017, it was, you know – we were just creating music and Don Jazzy came up with an amazing vibe and an amazing chorus. It was a conversation, like "hmm, you been say you'll be there with me when I dun hammer, that's interesting," and we just built it from there. I think the chemistry that we have over the years shone through on that track once again, same energy we put into "Surelere" and "Kabiyesi", we put into [That's Interesting] and hope that people feel it and enjoy the vibe.

So why release this project now?

Uhm, there's no specific time. I turned 40 on the first of May, and would have preferred it came out on my birthday, but that couldn't happen 'cos of scheduling, so we put it out a week after, you know? And it fell on the Mavin anniversary, so [it was just perfect].

Recently, your debut album "Turning Point" clocked ten. What do you remember from that time?

Mehn, that was a whole different era. That was the era of Mo Hits. We were on fire, untouchable. "Turning Point" was my first solid project, cos I'd released a bunch of projects as part of a group. So, yeah, it's a different vibe, different feel. Don't think I can compare that to what it is now.

You started out as a rapper. Are you listening to Nigerian rappers today? Who are your favorites?

I think M.I is still one of the hardest rappers, you can tell by his verse on [The Interesting EP]. That's a vibe. He brought the exact energy that I wanted on that track. Some of his own works as well. I mean, rap music is timeless, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. And Nigeria has lots of talented people. I mean, YCEE is doing pretty well, guys like Dremo. The sound and the energy, and he's an all-language guy. So, I support the genre, I listen to pretty much every rap song or project I get my ears on.

— Dr SID (@IamDrSID) May 12, 2020

Your label mate Ladipoe, of course, is featured on "Lit."

Ladipoe is actually one of the most creative rappers I've met. Like, he pays attention to the delivery, he thinks on a totally different level. He raps in triple entendres (scoffs). I don't even know how to describe it. When you think a word has a double meaning, then there's actually a third and I have to give him props for that.

[He] always brings positivity and energy to the studio. His input is timeless, I mean, look at his work with Simi right now, you can tell the creativity and meticulous nature that went into the planning of that song ("Know You"). He's such an amazing and talented artist, and it was so much fun working with him. He worked on that project a couple of times, changed a few things. I really enjoyed the experience, and look forward to working with him in the future.

Recently, Mavin Records celebrated 8 years in the business. What's the general atmosphere around the label like?

We're excited about what we're doing, you know. It's a good time, the energy in the camp is always on high, and we're looking forward to the future. I think we've accomplished quite a bit in the time we've been here, and we look forward to bringing in the new generation of artists to keep on pushing the boundaries. Mavin's aim was always to increase the roster, always add more talent to what we have and get more people out there. We're not looking to be a 5 or 6 or ten artist label. The idea is to have 20, 30 artists; be a proper record label.

Will you be following up on "The Interesting EP" with an album?

I would say probably, but I'm not sure.

What's the listener getting from this EP?

It's a kind of energy, to be honest. Most of my songs either send a message or uplift and that was pretty much my ideology [making this].

Will you be shooting some videos?

I'm actually thinking of some very creative ways to shoot music videos, to be honest. You know, with the COVID situation, obviously it's changed the way you can shoot music videos and present yourself.

Dr. Sid Talks "The Interesting EP"

Say someone hasn't listened to a Dr. Sid song ever before. What song are you playing to get that person to forever bump your shit, so to say?

Wow, that's actually a tough one. There's too many to choose from! Which song would you pick?

"Love Mine."

Wow, that's a good one. I really like "Love Mine," I mean it's – wow, I dun make music sha. "Love Mine" is definitely one that I will push forward but you know, one of my favorite songs is a song called "Princess Kate," off the Siduction album.

#WCW | Simi's Best Features, RANKED

2020-05-06T17:27:00.001+01:00

Simisola Ogundele, artist

An Overview: Simi's Best Features, RANKED

There's something special Simi brings to a song. Her aura is hers, and her pen, even alongside the best wordsmiths, shines. And that's why Simi (most times) is the perfect feature for a song. Since her early days, the artist, born Simisola Ogundele, has tinkered with the art form of rap, and her love is shown in her impeccable songwriting, its visual quality, its perfect weight, neither light nor heavy, just perfect to the song.

Ladipoe's "Know You" has been a sensation for a minute, a fixture on the charts, radio, and social media, where your favorite persons are all smiles and adorable lines. But how well does "Know You" rank amongst other Simi-assisted records? She's had quite a lot of great showings as a feature, and this ranked list is a near definitive one.

Let's dig in!

10. M.ANIFEST ft. SIMI – BIG MAD

Ghana's premier lyricist calls up Simi to play the disillusioned lover in "Big Mad". The casual splendour of M. Dot's lyricism meets the keen eye of Simi's, and the result is brilliant, of course.

9. COBHAMS ASUQUO ft. SIMI – WE PLENTI

An optimistic record, it settles into Cobhams' oft didactic preoccupations, as both the veteran artist and Simi tell tales of basically how, if it's God's appointed time, one's hustle will pay off.

8. DAVIDO ft. SIMI – MAGA 2 MUGU

Davido's 2016 EP Son of Mercy was largely slept-on, but the tape (for sure) had its gems. One of such was the Simi-assisted "Maga 2 Mugu", a well-written tale of affectation (as captured in its title) executed to finesse by the duo of Davido and Simi. If you were among the "sleepers", do well to listen to this jam after reading this article.

7. DREMO ft. SIMI – HEY MA

For a minute, Dremo has been tinkering with pop acceptability. There are, however, fewer songs where he hits the vision of being a "rapper wey dey sing song" quite as "Hey Ma", an exciting love record that features the dexterity of Simi, the much-needed nuance to Dremo's bars.

6. MR. EAZI & SIMI – DOYIN

"Your love dey high me like e be kpoli" tells you just about what you need to know about this record, a mid tempo song which finds both artists play the part of lovers, Simi's unpredictable songwriting bringing the sheen to Eazi's lamba.

5. LADIPOE ft. SIMI – KNOW YOU

Enjoying its moment as one of the biggest songs in the continent, the Ladipoe song boasts a key factor in Simi. Famed for her impeccable outings in rap records, this flirtation anthem of a song has the best feature in Simi, who vivifies the narrative vision of the song ever excellently.

4. BEZ ft. SIMI – BREATHE

Bez Idakula has remained a icon of alternative music in Nigeria, mesmerizing with his skill set: incredible vocals, excitable songwriting, and the penchant for picking the right feature to execute whatever vision he has in mind. "Breathe" is a classic duet, and for the female enchanter, he calls up Simi, whose lyrical and vocal prowess meet Bez's halfway, and from there on, a love led number could take your breath away with its sheer beauty.

3. MR. EAZI ft. SIMI – SURRENDER

Off Mr. Eazi's Lagos to London, this song was the first in a string of collaborations between both artists. Mr. Eazi's voice always find a worthy sparring partner in Simi's, an ice and cold esque affair, as both their honest and romantic tendencies ensure a song like "Surrender" will be ranked this high on a list like this.

2. ZORO ft. SIMI – STAINLESS

This Zoro song remains criminally underated. For its peculiar Highlife flavor and Zoro's exciting delivery, Simi was the topping of the ice, as they both serve a well paced love story. Simi, as usual, stays stainless and flawless with her contribution.

1. FALZ ft. SIMI: SOLDIER

A mesmerizing achievement. "Soldier" is the Falz and Simi chemistry at its most actualized, as they both take on roles of the zealous admirer and the dismissive love interest, telling a story that continues to thrill with its humor and nuance; a classic, this is an obvious choice for number one. And oh, Simi conceptualized the record.

Know You: How LADIPOE Scored His First Number 1 Single

2020-04-27T14:24:00.001+01:00

Know You: How LADIPOE Scored His First Number 1 Single

Having followed Ladipoe for the better part of the past decade, it was, to me, invigorating to find him inserting himself wholesomely into his circumstances as a rapper.

Per lyricism, few come close. But that, as many know, isn’t enough. Ten years, since he’d been rocking with Show Dem Camp (SDC), and Ladipoe hadn’t a solo project to his name. That would change. When he signed onto Mavin Records, like many others, I wondered: what had Don Jazzy – famed for helping create iconic pop stars – seen in Ladipoe? A more important question, however, was: could the deal see Ladipoe shed his rap roots, becoming a rapper different from the one we’d come to love on Victoria Island of Broken Dreams?

As argued by many, rap, going by its classic standards – punchlines, wordplay, conceptualization – was dead. In Nigeria, the rise of local languages as a vehicle to drive the genre towards the mainstream would mean this: the constant decrying of an art form which steered further away from its primitive idealism.

Ladipoe crowned himself the Lord of the Revival. Coming across in his songs as suave, a Native Mag feature showed that side to him. “Revival“, the last track off Talk About Poe (his debut album), is an exhilarating performance from the MC. The closer bar was “Rappers dying off from afrobeats fever”; the slamming I’m–done that follows that line paint a rapper well aware of his powers. And, with a fine dash of confidence, he’s going to change a world around him. Or at least, encourage its better qualities.

In conversation with the rapper Vector, he’d explained his stance. In another feature, he was even more articulate. Which goes without saying, that Ladipoe was a visionary and a student, and in his grand scheme of being Africa’s next rap sensation, these two combine to great effect.

Prior to TAP, it was frustrating when someone said the cliché no-rappers in Nigeria yarn, and you mention Ladipoe, only for said person to go who’s that? After TAP – sadly – not much changed. If you hadn’t been privy to the rapper from his SDC outings or the Tiwa Savage feature, you didn’t really know Ladipoe. And when one raved about him, it was hard for the other to not be disinterested, unable to see past the archetypical rappity rap rapper, a merchant of obscurity.

A year after TAP, Ladipoe, noticeably, began to hone into what I’ll call soft skills. That suaveness of speech was even more cultivated, on freestyle videos and elsewhere, on songs. On Head jess nominated “Jaiye“, he would feature label mate Johnny Drille – known for his romantic lushness – and rap over a beat which sounded like fresh air and happiness. Leading to a new year, he’d flex lyrical muscle over avantgarde production. With loosies and DIY–centric visuals, Ladipoe still catered to his core fan base, many who shared his sentiment of being Nigeria’s best chance at winning a Grammy.

Come Grammy or nay, Ladipoe is fulfilling prophecy. Long crowned a leader of his school by greats such as Show Dem Camp and M.I Abaga, he’s steady growing into stardom. And if persistent “he’s underrated” chants don’t get to you, “Know You” definitely did. On April 26th, the Simi–assisted single became the number one song (Nigeria) on Apple Music.

As expected of the times, such a song is a marriage of quality and strategy. And, per the mission of this essay, a deliberation on these qualities.

LIFELINES

Every listener of Ladipoe has been testament of his most unique rap style. A story, basically, as told to Vector, was his vehicle for a verse. With no constrictions by way of figuring out hard-hitting lines, the rapper engages a wholesome sense of the literary in coming up with his verses.

“How far with Lagos on a Monday/ traffic is as bad as the news on a frontpage”, the opening lines to his verse on Falz’s “Chardonnay Music“, is just as intimate as a 300-word piece on a megacity that takes as much as it gives.

Dig into any Ladipoe verse, and the rudiments of Lifelines (the exuberant alias for his lyrics) stays. On the quoted verse, which, to me is one of his best yet, Ladipoe engages your senses in ways only a top tier writer could. Even without mentioning potholes, the line “And I got to slow it down so my babe can do her makeup” brings that quality of Lagos to full glare of one’s mind’s eye. Each verse of Ladipoe – Chardonnay or not – sparkles, slick with the level of detail that goes into its making. But per the stuff of great writers, he makes this all seem effortless.

Ladipoe’s verse on “Know You” is no different. His verse speaks to said attentiveness. The song speaks of two strangers across wires. Lonely, yes, and craving the primitive need for touch, for care. But the pain comes by its title, the realization that they don’t know each other “that well”.

It’s funny, Ladipoe notes in his verse, how you have something in your teeth (hers). He then asks: But would you try to stop me if I want to take it out?

That picturesque line (and in extension his verse) brings the purpose of Ladipoe’s Lifelines to this song, like every verse of his before now.

SIMI

Simi has always been a rap fan. As a friend brought to notice, she tinkered with a lot of Hip Hop on her 2008 debut Ogaju. Her mainstream breakout, “Jamb Question“, featured a rapper (Falz) on its remix, bringing its already film-like song writing even more balance. Months later, both acts will collaborate on Chemistry, a joint tape which saw Simi spit some bars of her own.

With a rapper’s eye for detail and a voice suited to the sensualities of R&B acts, Simi brings something unique to a rap song. The classic “Soldier” and Zoro’s “Stainless” are some fine examples of just how well Simi’s vocals complements a rapper’s.

Simi’s records with rappers have all been 10/10 so far.

LadiPoe

She’s an easy cheat code for making a melodic rap classic with real commercial appeal.

— Ovie (@OvieO) April 25, 2020

Ladipoe plays backup to Simi when she sings on “Know You“, and vice versa. This allows both their voices meld in and out of each other, creating a warm feeling that mirrors the pink tension depicted on the song.

The child-like tone of her voice plays secondary (important nonetheless) on her verse, only second to its lyricism, which features a play on jeans/genes, depicting affectation in ways only a Simi can. As Ovie Ofugara (Notjustok’s EIC) conjectured, Simi really is “a cheat code for making a melodic rap classic”.

STRATEGY

With the Mavin machinery comes firepower and tact, leading all the way to the boss, Don Jazzy, who’s had close to two decades in the game.

“Know You“, as said earlier, is a child of deliberation. Following in the tradition of pairing Ladipoe’s softer qualities to female acts (TAP features TEMS, Efya, and Seyi Shay), the Simi feature is just about perfect. But more than just the feature, “Know You” is released at a time where many are inside (at home) and are well taken by the romantic. Nowadays, on social media, you’re either flaunting your picture perfect love life or staring at someone else’s, with God When on the tip of your lips. Isolation brings out the hopeless romantic in everyone, and Ladipoe couldn’t be releasing a rappity rap song in such times.

Ermm @Symply_Tacha you have to tell me what you want to know so you can show me o. #Knowyou ==> https://t.co/mTSgpkGGTU pic.twitter.com/UmpZQJEjZc

— ITS DONJAZZY AGAIN (@DONJAZZY) April 25, 2020

As TikTok continues to push the frontier of video content, more Nigerian artists are appropriating its hype in promoting their songs. Don Jazzy is a master at it already, and he may have furthered the vision of his signee’s song (even without a video) with the split screen of two people – usually male and female – singing “Know You” together.

Quality of music is, no doubt, primary, but when you talk about Poe, you’ll talk about deliberation and strategy: from the choice of features, to his Revival Sundays, to the new single: its rollout, its time of release, and the push behind it.

STRONG FAN BASE

If you’re just hearing about Ladipoe for the first time, it’ll be a big mistake to assume he’s an overnight success. His earliest verses comes more ten years ago, and from his strong affiliation with the SDC duo, he’s always cultivated his own following.

Even before TAP, Ladipoe had amassed a strong followership that his name was being mentioned in underground circles as one of the best rappers around.

Ladipoe | Twitter

The success of “Know You” can’t be completely attributed to just his skill, or its perfect feature, or the tact behind it; Ladipoe comes from a long line of creatives that have cultivated the immense potential of the communal; and now, he’s reaping its dividends, ushering, in the process, new believers to the revival.

It could only get better from here.

Tiwa Savage Takes Us To Church With A Gospel Mix Performance | Watch Video

Superstar Tiwa Savage delivered a dope set on an IG Live performance, interpolating popular gospel songs.

Tiwa Savage Takes Us To Church With A Gospel Mix Performance | Watch Video

Tiwa Savage earlier today, delivered a dope performance on her IG Live. With live production from Mystro, the pop goddess sang her heart out on some of the biggest gospel songs.

As everyone is instructed to stay at home, entertainers are using their platforms to entertain. But Tiwa, keying into her faith as a Christian, recognizes the somewhat spiritual thirst for praises and the uplifting vibes (gotten from gospel), especially now that no one attends church.

Rather than preview new music or perform her hits, she sought the truest part of one: the soul. And we’re thankful for this beautiful performance.

By now, you should know: in this house, we stan Tiwa Savage. But after watching this, we stan even harder.
