Alice in Wonderland

Let me say that I am an avid Alice in Wonderland reader, collector and overall enthusiast. I was greatly looking forward to this version, even though I knew going in it was not going to follow the books. I don't have a problem with re-inventing old stories, so long as something new is brought forth from them in the process.

Sadly, this version adds nothing but Lord of the Rings (which I loved for LOTR but not Alice) style special effects along with seen-it-before CGI on a scale that is at once overwhelming and bland.

The first few scenes of Alice above ground are promising. People above ground are sort of parodies of Wonderland characters and it doesn't beat you over the head saying "This is an Alice movie, not based on the books, but still an Alice movie."

After you get to Underland you hear lines from the books quoted but without meaning or context. Carroll wrote nonsense yes, but that nonsense often had a metaphorical or allegorical meaning. You can't just throw words around and make up what they mean. Well, I suppose if you are Humpy Dumpy you can, but he's not in the movie.

Mia Wasikowska is an adequate Alice, but not spectacular. I think she is held back more by the story than her ability.

Depp doesn't steal the movie from Alice, as I had feared he might. He too is adequate but limited. The only stand-out is Carter as the Red Queen. She steals all her scenes.

It just didn't feel like an Alice movie to me, or even based on Alice. You could change the characters names and not know where they came from. The story was much too Disney. It lacked any sense of whimsy or rebellion found in the books.

I should also mention that I hate 3D because it's simply a gimmick to charge $3 more per ticket and adds nothing. In fact I think it makes the movie appear darker and worse all so I can see 3-4 items come at me, sorta.

In summation, the TV Alice from several years back with Tina Majorino is much better. I also liked the SyFy Alice more as well because it told a new Alice story which actually felt like an Alice story.

Beast from Haunted Cave (1959)

This was a very good movie, the story is about the Gangster Alexander Ward, his girl friend, Gypsy Boulet, and two henchmen come to Deadwood, South Dakota with the idea of stealing a few gold bars. They enlist the aid of a local ski instructor, Gil Jackson, and plan to use him as a guide out of the territory after the robbery. However, a blizzard forces them to take refuge in Jackson’s cabin, where Gypsy lowers the inside temperature by giving the cold shoulder to Ward, her former sweetie until she saw Jackson. Ward don’t care, as he plans to kill Jackson after they have no further use of him. But they had used an explosion in a cave to serve as a distraction during the heist, and this explosion had irritated the big spider that lived there and, sure enough, all hands have to seek refuge in the cave from the fury of the storm. All but two of them would have been better off facing the South Dakota elements.

Prehistoric Women (1950)

Tigri (Laurette Luez, working her way up to Bomba and Bowery Boys films) and her stone-age girl friends hate all men, but realizing they are a necessary evil, capture some for potential (strictly business, no recreation allowed) husbands. Engor (Allan Nixon, working his way down to the Mesa of Lost Women) escapes and, in his travels, discovers fire. This comes in handy later, after he has been recaptured by the women, when he drives off a dragon, or something, with his new discovery. This little feat has the effect of making the women realize their rightful subservient position, and he and Tigri have a primitive (non-catered) wedding, and go off to start a new tribe of fur-wearers.

I am a hard core Beatles fan and i often cry to think about how they were such good friends that parted on such bad terms. At least they will always be immortal through those who remember and keep those memories alive. Once again, an amazing tribute.

As he finds many native Filipinos inclined to resist the occupier’s vision of returning to the South Asian fold under a paternalistic empire which doesn’t hesitate to ’spank the unruly’, but is mainly civilian, unprepared, inept in military matters, Madden appeals to the legendary anti-US freedom fighter Andres Bonifácio’s homonymous grandson Captain Andrés Bonifácio, who is luckily rescued from a POW dead march, to inspire the resistance -once his own fighting spirit is rekindled- with him in a still very unsure war, retaliated by bloody, ten to one repression. When the Japanese realize the people side against them, they stage fake independence under imperial prince Ito, but are betrayed. The Hobbit (1977)

My theory about this movie is that either you love this movie or you can't stand it. I personally loved this movie. The acting is really great, and if you listen to the things they say and make connections, the storyline is quite funny. I would highly recommend this movie to J.R.R. Tolkien fans and children aged 6 to 15.

Hobbits are simple folk. Small people with hairy feet, they are not cut out for adventure and prefer to laze about and eat. A particular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Orson Bean), is taken by surprise one morning when the mighty wizard Gandalf (John Huston) knocks at his door. Soon Bilbo finds himself inducted into a party of dwarves bent on reclaiming their mountain from the deadly fire-breathing dragon, Smaug. Insisting that the timid Bilbo is a master thief, Gandalf insures the danger-loving dwarves that the quest will include many mishaps and perilous encounters with goblins, trolls, and dwarf-eating spiders. Among other things that the reluctant Bilbo discovers on this amazing journey is an enchanted ring that turns its wearer invisible, and soon the hobbit transforms from a master bumbler into a master burglar.

Based on the beloved novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, THE HOBBIT is an animated classic that was brought to the TV screen in the late 1970s by Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass. A good flick. Jason Robards steals the movie with his sardonic sense of humor. For an apocalyptic movie it has a neat twist to it with the telepathic dog that is smarter then his master. Directed by L.Q. Jones. Jones is one of the bounty hunters in Sam Peckinpah's, 'The Wild Bunch', as well as one of the brothers in,'Ride the high country'. My favorite part in the movie is where Don Johnson thinks he's going to get in the sack with the holocaust survivors women. It doesn't work out as he thought it would.

I like the film because of the good casting, the good visual effects, the way the casts acting, and there is a good moral and values that we can get of, and it's not boring to watch.

This is the sequel to “Romancing the Stone” where Jack and Joan have their yacht and easy life, but are gradually getting bored with each other and this way of life. Joan accepts an invitation to go to some middle eastern country as a guest of the sheik, but there she is abducted and finds her- self involved with the “jewel”. Jack decides to rescue her with his new partner Ralph. They all go from one adventure to another… What is the story of this “jewel”?

Blade Runner (1982)

This powerful film makes a great impact on the Cult Film world. It uses a futuristic story to explain the complex theories of existence and help go even far beyond. Edward James Olmos has a great quote in this movie when he says, "It's too bad she won't live. But then again, who does?" That quote sums up this powerful, moving sci that shows little reflections of other movies of the time period, but more characteristics of a great film.

In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specialises in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when six replicants escape from an offworld colony to Earth

Beat the Devil (1953)

The one bright spot about this film was the acting. This all-star cast did a great job with a bad story. The directing was not good, as the pacing was off. Worth buying if you can find it in the bargain bin.

A quartet of international crooks — Peterson, O’Hara, Ross and Ravello — is stranded in Italy while their steamer is being repaired. With them are the Dannreuthers. The six are headed for Africa, presumably to sell vacuum cleaners but actually to buy land supposedly loaded with uranium. They are joined by others who apparently have similar designs.

An almost unknown gem, The Hit is a fabulously acted and unpredictably plotted trip through different realities. Outstanding script, wonderful cast and a spare but precise Eric Clapton score. One of my favorites.

Ex-gangster Willie Parker has betrayed his former “colleagues” and now lives in Spain where he thinks he can hide from their vengeance. But one day, ten years later, two hitmen (Braddock and Myron) show up and kidnap Willie. They are ordered to escort him back to Paris where he should stand trial. But it is a long way to Paris..

Barry Lyndon (1975)

I wonder if Kubrick picked O'Neal, a actor of moderate means, because Stanley knew he wouldn't have to worry about overacting. Kubrick keeps his distance and ours from the characters in most of his films. He wants to say something about life and doesn't want that statement clouded by superfluous emotion. However Barry Lyndon suffers from that distance in my opinion. The film is gorgeously shot and splendidly scored and edited and gives as sterile a presentation as an operating room. Worth seeing as a physical achievement but once was enough for me.

A gentlemanly rogue travels the battlefields and parlors of 18th century Europe determined to make for himself the life of a nobleman through seducing, gambling and fighting his way up the social ladder.

Power Dive (1941)
