A Day at a Time

Sometimes we make it one day at a time. This is what gets us through the tough times. Let's get you through today. Ask yourself these four questions:

1. What do I want to accomplish today?

2. What do I need to do to accomplish today?

3. What are the resources that can help me?

4. How will I know if I accomplished my goal for today?

Now, if you accomplished at least one simple task today then "great job."
Do this for each goal you want to accomplish today. Remember, take big projects and break them down into small achievable pieces. You will get there.

Before you pick a coach take time to look them over. If you agree with their style and foundation then go for it. They might help you reach your dreams and goals.

Five Steps in Surviving a Layoff

The market isn't looking good and some people are getting laid off. What do you do to make a little extra money during a possible lay off?

1. Sell your unused stuff: Ebay, craigslist, yard sale. You might have attachment to a lot of items in your house but ask yourself, "do I need it". You can make a couple hundred dollars on a morning yard sale. Just remember you're not selling antiques. keep the price very affordable and you will have cash in your pockets.

2. Cancel unnecessary expenses. This can be the cable tv, unused memberships, investments, and anything that you are not using or can be without for the next few months until you get back on your feet.

3. Part time job: You might have a college degree so a part time job might seem absurd. But, if you have a free night or weekend a part time job might help add a few dollars to the house. Working at night can free up your days to look for a permanent job.

4. Start your own part time business: There are plenty of businesses to start on your own. Most of them only take sweat equity. It can be from lawn care, babysitting, running errands, grocery shopping for others, home care, etc. Remember, if you don't have the money to start a business you have the smarts to be creative.

5. Volunteer: Find a charity that you are passionate about and volunteer. This may seem out of the ordinary but keeping your mind and passion focused can help you in the long run. This will help you keep things in order and even make some great contacts in the process.

Hang in there. Don't get discouraged. Remember, there are others going thru the same situation. Think of this as a new opportunity to reinvent yourself. This is the opportunity you have been waiting for to find the career you truly love. Don't do this alone. Find a support group, mentoring group, life coach, career coach, spiritual advisor or a counselor. this is your chance to renew your life in the path that you were meant to be on.

Returning to College

Are you thinking about returning to college? Here are some things to think about:

1. Plan your new routine. This means looking for family or friends to help possibly picking up the kids from school etc. Plan when you can take class without interruptions and when you will be able to study.

2. Talk to your family. Make sure they are willing to support you on this endeavor. This means they may have to forfit time with you and help out more around the house.

3. Don't underestimate your study skills. You might need to take refresher courses on writing, computers, etc. Most universities have seminars and workshops to help students succeed.

4. Ensure adequate financing is available. If you have to cut back at work or leave work altogether, make sure you can pay the mortgage. You don't need any more stress.

Good luck on your new endeavor. Remember, four years will go by. You can either have a degree or not.

I'm going to do it as soon as...(Overcoming Procrastination)

Does this sound familiar? You wake up in the morning; have your coffee; read your list of things to do today; then go back to bed. Is this procrastination, or a more serious problem? If it occurs more than once; it is. However, people procrastinate for a variety of reasons such as; fear of failing or succeeding; poor organizational skills; and sometimes, a lack of self-esteem. Let’s explore these particular areas and offer a few easy tips in overcoming procrastination.

Fear of Failing or Succeeding: If you fall into this category, there are certain tasks you can perform to understand your resistance. Ask yourself what are you most afraid of; the task, the requirements needed to fulfill the task; the outcome, or possible failure? Perhaps it may go even deeper. Maybe you are afraid you will succeed. Most often, there is a tendency to sabotage a certain project because in succeeding, you are meeting the high expectation others’ have about you and your work. Thus, more pressure is being placed upon you; and therefore, no excuses can suffice in exceeding those expectations.

Fear of Rejection: Fear of rejection can be another reason why you cling to procrastination. This may originate from low-self esteem; or a lingering uncertainty within your own mind. It can also be generated from a past rejection which has resurfaced by the task itself. Do not place so much importance on what others think; affirming confidence in your own abilities is the key to overcoming rejection. You may feel a slight twinge, but will be able to brush it off if you just remember who you are.

Organizational Skills: Create a Small ListInstead of pressuring yourself by including twenty or more things to do on your list, create small lists of five things to do. Managing your life in this way will make it easier for you to complete the tasks; leaving you with a feeling of accomplishment. Do not allow anyone or anything to overpower you; your life; or your achievements.

Lack of Self Esteem and Motivation: Lack of self-esteem prevents you from completing the easiest task. Why? Either because you do not feel you are worthy of the challenge, or because you feel you are not good enough to complete it. Motivation is a good place to begin. Start with an easy task first; then gradually work your way up to full completion. Your confidence will build; you will feel more positive about what you can accomplish, and you will be less likely to avoid the next task at hand.

Lift the Weight off Your Shoulders: Here is an analogy which may help you. Food shopping requires a list, correct? Each time a product is placed in the shopping cart, you cross it off the list. Well, following the same procedure with other tasks in your life will lift the weight off your shoulders, and the burden will disappear. The secret is not to overload your mind with tasks neither you nor anyone else can handle. Take it one step at a time. Remember, no one is testing you; there is no time-clock. There is no pressure.

Take things a small step at a time. Don't rush and cross it off as you go. You will see how quickly you are to getting to your goal.

Water Leak Woes

What do you do when you find a leak in the house? You call a plumber.
Have you ever had one of those days/weeks when a small leak becomes a great big wave. I had one of those weeks. What appeared to be a possible leak in the floor, became mold in the house. This wasn't some ordinary leak. It was a leak from a faulty installation of a new shower. This shower leaked inside the walls and never showed itself until it seeped into the carpet in our kids room.
So, what is the message behind this leak? Is there some divine message or do we chop it up to the joys of home ownership? Does this small leak represent the small holes in our life that can become big uncontrollable waves. Does it represent the mold that sneaks into our life and consumes us until we feel we need a renewal?

What leaks or mold do you need to get rid of in order to have a purposeful life?

Summer Vacation Guide (with kids)

Summer is here and the kids ask, "Where are we going for summer vacation this year?" Although gas prices are up what is a good option for a vacation? Here is a guide to help you make your decision.

What age are the kids? As you know, this is a big factor when thinking about long trips or long day events. If you have very small ones having a 12 hour day at disney land may not be ideal. They will definiteley let you know after the 5th hour.
What topics did your kids study in school? Weather, fossils, historical events, government etc. You may have some great places to visit in your own state. What state doesn't have fossil sites. Some ideas can be as simple as visiting a local weather station, a cultural community, university telescope, etc.
Are there any moderate temperature areas in your state? This is usually a place where you can play a baseball game or football game without having a heat stroke.
Are there any hotels with water parks in your area? Sometimes a day at the local resort in your own town may be the most memorable trip your kids will have. They will remember the large water slide, the bomb fire or the nice hotel room.
If a trip is completely out of the question, look into the local library and book stores. Often, they have summer schedules with kid events.

Graduate Survival Guide

Congratulations to all who are graduating and moving forward in their life. Each year we are all called to graduate into something new in our life. It can be from kindergarten to first grade, high school to college, or college to the working world. We take what we learn and move into a new phase in our life.

Often, we think we are starting over but in reality we learn from our experience and graduate into a new stage in our life. So, what do we need to know to survive the next stage?

High School Grads:

Enjoy the summer – Have fun and de-stress. Later in life, it will be rare to find a whole summer of having fun.

Find a FUN summer job – Be a lifeguard, camp counselor, hiking guide, or work at your favorite store. You may get some great discounts and make a little money at the same time.

Prepare your mind. Set a goal for what you want to do in life and break it down into small steps. If you feel college isn’t for you then make a plan for the career you want. Find out what it takes to be successful in the company. Most companies have workshops, seminars and certification schools.

College Grads:

Take a two-week vacation and de-stress. I won’t say a summer vacation because you are competing with other college grads for jobs.

Find your dream company. Most of the time we look for a job but forget about the company itself. If you like a company in your field that is making a difference and has a similar philosophy as yours then this may be your dream job. Imagine going to work at a place that supports your lifestyle.

Get out of debt. Pay off your debt immediately. As you begin to make money you might forget you have student loans and credit card debt. You will be accruing debt as you get older (cars, house, wedding ring, furniture, kids, etc). So, paying off old debt is essential. If you figure out the compound interest you might realize that the stereo you bought in college via credit card will cost you five times as much in the near future if not paid off.

Invest: Start investing in 401k plans, mutual funds, IRA’s, insurance etc. If you invest $100/month today at age 22 your retirement portfolio will look amazing. You might be able to retire early or live a very comfortable retirement life.
