										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;"><strong>Avoiding soil compaction is a challenge</strong>, especially when weather and the calendar push growers into tough decisions about when to plant, till or harvest. Working wet soil and other no-no’s come at a price: Experts put average yield losses from compaction at 10 to 20%, even all the way up to 60% in extreme situations.</p>
<p>In fact, soil scientists in North Dakota and Minnesota predict an economic cost of $587 million (yield loss and expense of leveling ruts) through 2021 for every 10% of the corn and soybean acres affected by deep wheel-traffic compaction during the wet 2019 harvest conditions. Actual impacted land area may range up to 30%, resulting in actual costs from compaction up to to $1.76 billion in those two states alone.</p>
<h2>What Is Compaction?</h2>
<p>In its simplest definition, soil compaction is a form of soil degradation in which soil bulk density increases as the porosity, or space between solid soil particles, decreases when particles are pushed together. Pore space is essential for the movement of air, water, nutrients, soil organisms and plant roots, which is why losing porosity to compaction is such a threat to crop health and yields.</p>

<h2>Agronomic Impacts of Compaction</h2>
<p>Compaction, especially in fine- and medium-textured soils, takes a toll on growing plants. As a physical barrier, it can delay or prevent seedling emergence (crusting), or cause root tips to be club-like or stunted, with few of the fine lateral roots and root hairs needed to take in water and nutrients. Roots may shoot to the sides, looking for a way through the soil, unable to grow past subsoil compaction and left more vulnerable to different stress factors.</p>
<p>And there’s a more direct impact on plant growth, beyond the physical barriers to healthy roots. In what is thought to be a natural survival mechanism, “a root system that’s up against mechanical barriers sends a hormonal signal to the plant shoot, which then slows down respiration and growth.”*</p>
<p>The loss of porosity also cuts down on the soil’s ability to store ample water and allow the gaseous exchange needed to supply oxygen to plant roots and beneficial soil organisms. That contributes to moisture stress and nutrient deficiencies.</p>
<p>If crops have trouble emerging, establishing a robust root system, reaching and taking in nutrients, and even tell themselves to slow down to survive, plant health and yields suffer.</p>
<h2>Signs of Compaction</h2>
<p>While compaction can reduce crop growth and yield without revealing itself as the cause, there are several visual signs that the condition may be affecting your fields and crops:</p>
<ul>
<li>Uneven emergence, especially in wheel track patterns</li>
<li>Malformed root growth: roots that are flat, stubby, thin, twisted or growing horizontally rather than vertically on one or both sides (hatchet roots)</li>
<li>Stunted growth or plants showing signs of nutrient deficiencies</li>
<li>Areas of the field that suffer more from drought stress or disease and insect pressure</li>
<li>Standing water</li>
<li>Excessive water erosion</li>
</ul>
<h2>Ways To Avoid Compaction</h2>
<p>Soil scientists and agronomists agree on the best way to avoid topsoil compaction at planting or harvest time: Stay out of the field if the soil is too wet to plant without smearing or creating sidewall compaction, or too wet to support the weight of the combine.</p>
<p>When it is time to be in the field, a major way to limit compaction damage is to choose tires with a large footprint, inflated only to the minimum allowable pressures for the weight. Central tire inflation systems, such as the VarioGrip<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.0.0/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> tire pressure regulation system on Fendt® row-crop tractors and the Load Logic<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.0.0/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> weight management system on the Fendt Momentum<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.0.0/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> planter, automate the process of inflating and deflating tires to correct pressures for field and transport. Operators save time while making the right choice for their soil, instead of hurting yields by creating new compaction.</p>

<p>Jason Lee, AGCO agronomist for North America, notes that growers trying to get all their acres planted in windows shortened by weather and soil conditions are drawn to the productivity of high-speed, central-fill planters, but until now may have lost significant yield in the center rows due to wheel compaction from large, heavy commodity tanks.</p>
<p><em>“With Load Logic on the high-capacity Fendt Momentum planter, growers can benefit from fewer fill stops for seed and fertilizer without paying a penalty from creating more compaction,” he says. “The weight management system not only manages tire pressures, but also gives you the choice of spreading the weight equally across all the planter wheels, or concentrating the weight on the in-line tandem central transport wheels to limit compaction to a controlled traffic path.”</em></p>
<p>Lee adds that having tire pressure regulation on both the Fendt planter tractor and the Momentum planter “reduces that first-pass compaction and offers growers a complete compaction management systems approach.”</p>
<p>Additional choices soil experts recommend to avoid surface and sidewall compaction at planting time include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Leaving some crop residue over the row to reduce crusting</li>
<li>Planting at an adequate depth (not too shallow) with appropriate downforce and use of seed firmers</li>
<li>Using controlled traffic lanes to re-use the same wheel tracks</li>
</ul>
<p>At harvest time, they give similar advice: don’t drive on overly wet fields; use wide tires or tracks; keep trucks out of the field; establish and stay on grain cart paths, ideally same as the combine; don’t till wet soils; use cover crops to help build soil structure while protecting soils from erosion. <p>Our combined capacity is growing to <strong>2,000</strong> units weekly. In each location, we are working with local partners, such as the <a href="http://www.hvidaesaude.org.br/">Hospital Vida E Saúde</a>  and <a href="https://www.unijui.edu.br/en-institutional">UNIJUÍ, the Regional University of Northwestern Rio Grande do Sul</a> in Santa Rosa, Brazil, to distribute the PPE.</p>

<li><strong>40</strong> mobile hospital beds in Santa Rosa, Brazil, with the capacity to produce <strong>25 per week</strong>.</li>
<li><strong>25 </strong>reusable masks in our Omaha, Nebraska and Paris, Illinois facilities, and we are in the process of increasing our output.</li>
<li><strong>1,000 </strong>individual door openers to minimize the risk of infection; these are being used within AGCO’s facilities.</li>
</ul>
<p>We will keep innovating for as long as it takes to provide health care workers in our communities the personal protective equipment they need to stay safe and healthy in this crisis.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Crop Tour trial plot for sugar beets on the Swiss Future Farm in 2020 was planted under challenging conditions, as we were experiencing a spring period with extraordinarily low precipitation during the planting period for sugar beets between the middle of March and the middle of April. In comparison to previous years, the precipitation sum did not even amount to one-fifth of the amount we received in the past couple of years in our location in Northeastern Switzerland with 10 mm in 2020 vs. 55 mm in 2019 and 64 mm in 2018, respectively (<strong>Figure 1</strong>).</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The SFF Crop Tour plot for sugar beets was planted in a field with homogenous soil conditions on an area of 4.5 hectares on 6th April 2020 with a planted population of 100,000 seeds per hectare. The trial plot comprises the following experimental machine settings:</p>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Planting depth: 2.5 cm (standard) , 3.8 cm (slightly deeper), and 6.4 cm (deep)</li>
<li>Closing pressure: 7 kg (light), 10 kg (standard), 14 kg (increased), 20 kg (heavy)</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: left;">A Precision Planting planter with 3 meters working width, 6 rows and 50 cm row spacing, equipped with Precision Planting&#8217;s vSet®, vDrive®, DeltaForce®, SpeedTube®, SmartFirmer®, and FurrowJe®t technologies was used to plant the trial plot with a Fendt 516 with VarioGuide and RTK. As a new feature, the planter was equipped with Precision Planting’s latest innovation, the FurrowForce pneumatic closing system <strong>(Figure 2).</strong></p>

<h2><strong>Results</strong></h2>
<p>Field emergence and juvenile development of beets on the trial plot was measured 22 days after planting by the Cantonal Crop Consultancy Service of BBZ Arenenberg. Significantly higher field emergence was found in the trial strips that were planted at a slightly deeper planting depth of 3.8 cm, whereas fewer beets had emerged in the trial strips planted at the standard planting depth of 2.5 cm and a deep planting depth of 6.4 cm (<strong>Figure 3</strong>, top). This shows that beets planted at 3.8 cm were placed in sufficient moisture, whereas the germination environment for beets planted at 2.5 cm was too dry. Considering the juvenile development (<strong>Figure 3</strong>, bottom), although the share of further developed plants with 2 true leaves is higher in the trial plot planted at standard depth, this will not compensate for the overall reduced crop stand that amounts to only half of the established plants of the trial strips planted slightly deeper.</p>

<p>Results of the different closing pressure applied with the FurrowForce system in sugar beets planted at 3.8 cm depth show that field emergence improved, when higher closing pressure was applied (<strong>Figure 4</strong>, top). This can be explained by the extraordinary dry planting conditions, where furrows closed with high closing pressure had the best ability to preserve moisture and were not prone to be compacted. Looking at juvenile development, trial strips planted with a closing pressure of 20 kg exerted by FurrowForce had the highest share of further developed beets in the 2-leaf stadium (<strong>Figure 4</strong>, bottom).</p>

<h2><strong>Conclusions</strong></h2>
<ul>
<li>Slightly deeper planting depths for sugar beets of 3.8 cm (1.5 inch) compared to standard 2.5 cm (1.0 inch) places the seed in sufficient moisture conditions and enables better germination conditions and crop establishment in dry periods.</li>
<li>FurrowForce applied with a closing pressure of 20 kilograms enabled to preserve soil moisture most effectively under the very dry planting conditions compared to lower closing pressure, and enabled best field emergence on the trial plot.</li>
</ul>
<h2><strong>Outlook</strong></h2>
<p>A second measurement of field emergence and juvenile development will be required in the upcoming weeks to investigate to which extend a period of rainfall that started on the day after the first measurement has further influenced crop establishment.</p>

<p>For Moses Njovu, it was his first time to travel outside his home country of Zambia to perform with the <a href="http://ame-en.masseyferguson.com/agco-future-farm.aspx">AGCO Future Farm</a> Choir. And for Norbert Stadler, it was his first time to attend <a href="https://www.agritechnica.com/en/">Agritechnica</a> to see his favorite <a href="https://www.fendt.com/us/">Fendt tractors</a> on exhibit.</p>
<p>But best of all, Agritechnica was an opportunity for the two to meet each other after Mr. Stadler <a href="https://blog.agcocorp.com/2019/11/zambia-future-farm-family-tractor-donation/">donated a secondhand tractor and subsoiler</a> to the Njovu family earlier this year.</p>

<p>The two shook hands and spoke through an interpreter. Mr. Njovu presented Mr. Stadler with a thank-you gift of a Fendt model tractor and cap. They also met with some of the AGCO team that made the whole endeavor possible.</p>

<p>The AGCO Future Farm Choir performed in the <a href="https://www.agcocorp.com/commitment/sustainability/focus-areas/communities.html">AGCO Agriculture Foundation</a> booth, which in a happy coincidence overlooked the Fendt stand.  They sang in traditional languages of Nanja and Bemba. The choir performed at a number of events over the course of Agritechnica, including the Max Eyth Evening presentation of the Gold and Silver Innovation Awards.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The latest innovations in smart farming technology took center stage at the Farm Days events held at the Swiss Future Farm, Sept. 20 and 21, 2019, in Tänikon. The <a href="http://www.swissfuturefarm.ch/index.php/home" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Swiss Future Farm</a> project partners AGCO Corporation, BBZ Arenenberg and GVS Agrar worked together to provide insights into current agronomic challenges and available solutions from their consultancy and technology portfolios.</p>
<p>Visitors learned about best precision agriculture practices at five field stations with trial plots and machinery demonstrations, and explored digital tools such as AGCO <a href="http://www.fusesmartfarming.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fuse smart farming</a> solutions and more in the Smart Farming Expo Hall and the Innovation Barn.</p>
<p><strong>Side-by-side trials compare settings and technologies</strong><br />
Farm Days preparation starts with creating the right trial plots throughout the year. This enabled the Swiss Future Farm managers to show the public various field operations on a freshly planted sugar beet field set up explicitly for this year&#8217;s Farm Days. Mechanical weed control and other current agricultural challenges were part of the extended agronomic orientation (Photo 1). The AGCO Crop Tour sugar-beet demonstration plot compared different planting depths, levels of downforce and liquid fertilizer settings, showing the unique features and agronomic benefits of <a href="https://www.precisionplanting.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Precision Planting</a> technology. This trial plot was planned and managed by the AGCO Agronomy and Farm Solutions Team, and was presented in collaboration with the Precision Planting Western Europe Team (Photo 2).</p>
<p>&#8220;The results and conclusions of these trial plots will then flow back into the considerations for planting next spring,&#8221; explains Christian Eggenberger, Lead of BBZ Arenenberg Consulting and Farm Manager of Swiss Future Farm.</p>

<p><strong>Optimum yield starts with residue management</strong><br />
With the motto &#8220;After the harvest is before the harvest&#8221;, another practical station demonstrated various strategies and methods for stubble cultivation in a harvested rapeseed field. The goal was to prepare the field as optimally as possible for planting the follow crops and to set up the best conditions for the next harvest. &#8220;This enables us to save fuel and reduce, if not completely eliminate, herbicides,&#8221; says Nico Helmstetter, Project Manager Swiss Future Farm, GVS Agrar. Visitors were especially interested in a new implement on the Swiss Future Farm introduced during Farm Days 2019: a cutter roller that offers more effective crop-residue shredding in combination with reduced tillage. <p><strong>Work with pinpoint accuracy to save input costs</strong><br />
Soil is an important resource in agriculture. In order to work it gently and sustainably, it makes sense, especially with harvesting machines, to use always the same, pre-defined lanes. The Agroscope research institute of the Swiss government demonstrated Controlled Traffic Farming at a practical station. First trials have shown promising results, also for implementation in small-scale agriculture. Another practical station demonstrated how variable rate nitrogen fertilizer application is carried out with pinpoint accuracy for the current field trials on the Swiss Future Farm (Photo 4). &#8220;We collect data using drone images or yield mapping during harvesting. These then serve as a basis for us to apply the nutrients in a very targeted manner and only when required,&#8221; says AGCO employee Nils Zehner, Agricultural Engineer, Commercial Fuse EME. Preliminary results indicate significant savings in fertilizer inputs.</p>

<p><strong>Innovation and exchange of ideas</strong><br />
The exhibitions in the Smart Farming Expo Hall and the Innovation Barn attracted visitors with a Fuse Technologies and Precision Planting booth (Photo 5), a FarmingSimulator game station with Swiss Future Farm map, booths by third-party technology partners, and several exhibits on the subject of electromobility and renewable energies in agriculture, including a biomethane-driven Valtra N101 tractor. In the evenings, the &#8220;International Straw Bale Arena&#8221; featured informative podium discussions (Photo 6) on the topics of sustainability in agriculture, automation and robotics, and consumer-producer relationships. Presenters and panels included various stakeholders in the agricultural sector, including farmers, contractors, advisors, researchers and corporate representatives. On behalf of AGCO, Global Agronomy and Farm Solutions team member Jens Christian Jensen, talked about current changes in the agricultural sector in his home country of Denmark concerning the reduction of chemical inputs for weed control.</p>

<p><strong>Preparing for the future at the Future Farm</strong><br />
Over the past year, the Swiss Future Farm has established itself as a versatile event location and education resource for farmers. AGCO Crop Tour field trials will be repeated during the upcoming crop cycles to gain confidence in the results, and plans are already underway for further field events, conferences and courses. Swiss Future Farm Days 2019 proved that both professional audiences and the broader public is interested in the digitalization of agriculture, demonstrating a need for a regular platform for exchange such as occurred in September.</p>

<p>Agronomic value demonstration plots of corn and sugar beets are planted and growing at AGCO Crop Tour locations in France, Germany, Holland and Switzerland, with the goal of helping farmers achieve optimum yields while reducing production costs where possible. While that’s especially important with the less-than-favorable market conditions for sugar beets in the European Union, the agronomic lessons we’re learning and sharing also can apply to sugar beet production around the world.</p>
<p>As we’ve reported in a prior blog post, the AGCO Crop Tour initiative in Europe uses side-by-side trials to compare best planting practices and show the advantages of planter technology by using Precision Planting® row units on custom frames. The planters were pulled with Fendt 313 Vario and Fendt 516 Vario Profi Plus tractors.</p>
<h2>Cold temperatures delay planting, cause plant loss</h2>

<p>First, a weather report. Above-normal temperatures allowed early planting in some regions. Then, three weeks of colder-than-normal temperatures stalled those efforts and delayed planting to the point that some farmer-cooperators planted into low soil temperatures in order to get both their sugar beets and corn in the ground. Cold weather continued, with a late frost affecting the sugar beets in some of the Crop Tour plots. The first herbicide treatment in conjunction with low temperatures was too much for many of the delicate young sugar-beet plants, leading to above-normal plant loss. The corn seem not to have been greatly affected by the low temperature other than slow growth.</p>
<h2>Early observations</h2>
<p>As we observed the plots in the early days, it became very clear how important it is to get an accurate planting depth when planting sugar beets. The beets planted shallow at 1.27 centimeters (.5 inch) had a significantly lower emergence rate than those at the ideal depth of 2.5 centimeters (1 inch). Because seeds planted in dry surface soil lack adequate moisture to germinate, our conclusion is that we would rather plant a bit too deep than too shallow.</p>
<p>As the season progresses and at harvest, we will document how sugar beets and corn are affected not only by different planting depths but also by plant population, planting speed, closing systems, singulation, down force, use of starter fertilizer, section control and soil compaction. So far this year, we have held two Crop Tour events, both in Germany¬ – at the AGRAVIS plots in Uelzen and at ZG Raiffeisen in Karlsruhe – with the focus on plant establishment and emergence. These are the first of several crop tour events that will follow the growing season, with the final harvest events planned for the fall.</p>

In short, the subsidies that support sugar beet growing in the European Union are being reduced so the industry has to adapt to world market prices over the coming period. Growers are faced with major price reductions and increased transport costs because of longer routes as some of the largest sugar beet mills are already closing processing sites.</p>
<p>In order to survive and prosper, it behooves growers to reduce the cost of producing a ton of beets. In some regions, growers are already looking at alternative crops to sugar beets in the rotation. Some farmers are reducing their investment in beet equipment and relying on contract and custom work to reduce costs.</p>
<p>Here at AGCO, we are doing research to look at ways to reduce the cost of production. One approach is to reduce the number of tillage passes needed to prepare the seedbed by using heavy-duty, precision-technology planting units and the best planting practices we’re studying in AGCO Crop Tour plots.</p>

<p>Another factor concerning beet growers is the phasing out of neonicotinoid pesticides in Europe. The Neonicotinoids are part of crop-protection tools that reduce green peach aphids that are a major vector for beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV). Some countries as made dispensation for the use of neonicotinoids in beet production but are looking intensively at alternative ways of protecting the beets.</p>
<p>The increased focus on reducing pesticide usage in sugar beets has resulted in increased research in pesticide-free or organic sugar beet growing all over Europe. Currently researchers are pursuing a range of different paths toward that goal, such as using technology to solve the problem with weeds in the sugar beet fields. GPS guidance, cameras and even robots can aid in inter-row cultivation as a measure against yield-reducing weeds in the beet production. In the coming years, we believe we will see increased investment in technology to solve some of the problems that require the use of pesticides today.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the global internet of things (IoT) accelerates into the tens of billions of connected devices, it’s important to recognize why IoT is valuable. IoT is fundamental not because people can, for instance, see how many steps they take in a day, but rather because the data it gathers, connects, and processes allows them to do things better.</p>
<p>This ability to use data to improve operations is especially important for AGCO customers. In an increasingly challenging business environment for farmers, they need to make more informed decisions to increase operational efficiency. To do this requires them to gather more data that is more accurate and of finer detail, and then process the information into better decisions and actions. This processing needs to be in real-time, or close to it, and it is complex enough that it often needs to be done in the cloud.</p>
<p>This underlying need for better efficiency is the primary driver for the full connectivity initiative at AGCO. AGCO is a collection of brands from all over the globe, and all brands and regions agree that the machinery we make for professional farmers will be connected to the IoT through telemetry hardware and AGCO Connect software. All AGCO customers will be able to pull data off of their machines for monitoring, processing, or sharing, so they can make more informed decisions that improve yield, reduce input use, or reduce risk.</p>

<p>However, full connectivity through AGCO Connect will just be the beginning. The future is one where multiple sensors on the machine are pulling data about the soil, weather, and other environmental factors. Connectivity is also the foundational step that will make our machines Smart—meaning they will more often be gathering data, processing it, and adjusting automatically. For example, the <a href="http://www.idealharvesting.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">IDEAL<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.0.0/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></a> combine has smart features such as self-calibrating and self-correcting sensors that enable growers to make decisions immediately in the field. Another example is with Precision Planting’s <a href="https://www.precisionplanting.com/products/product/smartfirmer" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SmartFirmer®</a> tool that uses sensors to measure the furrow as it is firming each seed into the bottom of the trench which provides growers the ability to see what the environment the seed is being placed in and what type of variability a grower may have in the field.</p>
