Capturing an NPC 12 Solo

As you progress in the game, you would want to have higher level cities. In Evony Age 2, there are four types of Historic Cities, level 12, 14, 16 and the 18.

An NPC 12 can found ever 18 miles on the x, y axis. In layman terms, this means 1 level 12 NPC is exactly 18 spaces to the left, right, above and below of another level 12 NPC thereby creating a net of level 12 NPCs all over the server. There are a total of 1936 level 12 NPCs per server starting from coordinates 9, 9.

Now in order to capture a level 12 NPC, you should have already captured a level 10 NPC. This is not a prerequisite per se but you will not have a king/queen of your own otherwise making the entire process of taking a level 12 a royal pain.

Before going into numbers, a note to say that we are assuming all your technologies have been researched to level 10 (excluding privateering).

An NPC 12 will always have the following troop combinations:

Warriors: 1,120,000
Swordsmen/Pikemen: 162,666
Archers: 42807
Cavalry/Cataphract: 108,444
Ballista/Catapult/Battering Ram: 14,640
Rolling Log: 6,000
Archer’s Tower: 6,666
Defensive Trebuchet: 5,000
Trap: 22,000
Abatis: 11,000

Preferred Combination

Now you cannot do anything with the Wall fortifications so we’ll let that be as it is. In terms of troop combination, we want the pikemen, the cavalry and the battering ram. Like I mentioned earlier, the weakest in defence amongst the available options. To get this combination, you will have to wait and scout everyday and make your move the day you see this combination. Timing your attack takes a whole new definition in Age 2. Now we are also assuming the city you are attacking from have a level 10 rally spot and feasting hall.

The Right Distance

The distance between your attacking city and the level 12 matter a lot. You should have them as close to each other as possible. If you are not a paying customer like me, then the wise choice would be to wait for a flat to grow to level 10 next to the level 12 and building a level 1 city on it. Abandon the city and you have a level 10 NPC straightaway. Its important you capture the level 10 quickly because that NPC 10 is manually created and will be deleted by the server when maintenance happens. To use this logical and surprisingly uncommon “trick”, you should have 2 vacant city slots. One for the NPC 10 and one for the NPC 12. The reduced distance will let you concentrate on actual battle tactics rather than worrying about troop regeneration. If you didn’t know already, an NPC can regenerate its troops at the rate of 10% every 6 minutes. The repair rate of Wall fortifications is 18%. This is why I am stressing on the distance between your attack city and your NPC 12 needs to be very small.

Your City and Troops

You attack city should have 11 heroes including the King/Queen. Out of these 11 heroes, 5 heroes should be level 100 attack heroes. Maybe a Historic Hero if you have any of those. Move your Mayor to another city, you want 11 attack heroes here, no wise men or politicians required. The minimum attack for your lead heroes (the 5 level 100 ones) is 300+.
Plenty of Gold for healing. Disable auto-heal from the Rally Spot. Its expensive, almost 4-5 times manual heal.
Consider the possibility of the below calculations to be incorrect and have more troops that what I am outlining. The last thing you want is to fail or to be able to barely take the 12 but not have the troops to defend it. (oh yes, people will attack you from every direction once you have the 12)
Make sure the combination in the NPC 12 is Pikemen, Cavalry and Rams.
Enable Penicillin and Warhorn. Highly recommended, you want that extra 3% wounded and that extra 20% attack. If you have any, use the “Excalibur” on each of your level 100 heroes, especially the King/Queen. Extra firepower never hurts. You ultimate goal is to have the five main heroes running 300+ attack.

Troops Required:

Archers: 1,500,000
Warriors: 400,000
Pikemen: 220,000
Worker: 10,000
Scouts: 10,000
Swordsmen: 10,000

Layer out the Defence

Before you try to bounce your troops off the NPC, lets try and strategize the attacks. The abatis are safe as long as you don’t try to throw cavalry at the 12. The Rolling Logs and Defensive Trebuchets are one time use only. They will splatter your troops but are not renewable like the Archer’s Towers. The Traps too are one time use only but their high numbers (22,000) will require special attention.

You want to place your attack in such a way that you target the Traps first, then the Cavalry, the Pikemen next, then the Archers (plus ATs) and last the Rams. Each wave that you send needs to be designed specifically for one type of defence at a time. Again, don’t try a one-size-fits-all, all you’ll get is a sore thumb from all that clicking and no level 12.

Waves of Attacks

Firstly, you need to send 30 waves of 3,000 warriors each. Add another 5 waves if your heroes are weaker. These waves are designed to take down the traps. They will ALL die so don’t worry when you don’t see intel in your battle reports. Scout after you have plastered your warriors all over the NPC. You should have about 500 traps left in the NPC. You want to make sure that your precious Archers are killing troops not traps.
Now send two waves of 90,000 pikemen and 10,000 warriors to the NPC. Make sure your top heroes are leading these attacks because these are just two attacks and want the best bang-for-the-buck. These two waves will take out the Cavalry. Of course, scout again.
Next, send a single wave with your best hero of 80,000 Archers, 10,000 Pikemen, 1000 each of workers, warriors, swordsmen to take out the Pikemen in the NPC. Follow this up with three waves of 95,000 archers and the rest with your healed troops left over (I am assuming you are doing a manual heal between attacks). These three waves are to take out the Archers. Scout again.
Lastly, send out multiple waves of 95,000 archers and 1000 each of workers, warriors, scouts, swordsmen and pikemen to kill the warriors. I am not putting a number to these waves because our aim is to kill the healed troops with these attacks so use as many as required.

wall

Your loyalty waves should consist of 50,000 archers and 50,000 warriors. You are using the warriors as meat shield since they are most likely to be killed by spawned wall fortifications and troops. The archers being range units will go for the ATs and NPC archers.

As you move ahead, you can reduce your loyalty waves to 20,000 each of archers and warriors.

REMEMBER to keep scouting between attacks all the time. REMEMBER to keep manually healing between attacks.

DO NOT include cavalry or cataphract in this mix. These are mount units and will cause the NPC cavalry to charge and ruin the entire planning.

If you have been playing this game for long, you will know by now that the Evony game engine plays out attacks by rounds and each type of unit has inbuilt entry point for a battle. We have used this when we planned the attack strategy. Traps first, then Cavalry, next Pikes, followed by Archers then Warriors and lastly Rams.

Introducing Archers in the early waves will also ruin the battle tactics since the game engine rule matches a range with range (Archers and ATs) just like Mount with Mount. Introducing Cavalry or Archers too early will cause the NPC troops to “jump” the queue and the entire calculation will fall on it head.

Also, like we mentioned before, we don’t claim to be 100% right all the time. Overkill may happen. Have more troops than what has been outlined above. Not only to cover any mistakes etc. in this guide but also to have enough troops to defend you 12 once you have won it.

Each and Every Historic City (12, 14, 16, 18) goes into auto truce for 24 hours when it is captured. This is designed to give you enough time to recover and mount a defense. However, remember that the manual truce if declared never covers a historic city ever. In an event you are attacked after the 24 hour cool down is over, your only hope is defense by troops. Historic Cities cannot be teleported either.

The calculations in this guide have been provided by Lord Joker of server NA21 who is the vice host of alliance PURE and ranks 24 on the server. We have been using these calculations every time we take a historic city and so far they have been proven to be correct.

Swordsman Unit

Swordsmen are another resource hog are take high amount of Iron to build.
A swordsman is effective against Archers and but will not be effective against other troop types to that extend. However, the swordsmen are primarily defensive troops and they should be treated that way.
Iron is THE most expensive resource in Evony Age 2 regardless of the server. Using huge numbers for mass production with the intention of using these forces for offence is a very bad move economically.
The best use if to have a hundred thousand or so of swordsmen in each of your cities as defensive units. If you gates are open (and they should be), your swordsmen will ruin the proximity advantage that enemy Archers gain during later rounds.

Pikeman Units

Pikemen are hogs for lumber. It costs a lot of this expensive resource to build them but they are most effective against Cavalry.
These troops are useful if you are attacking a city which has high number of Cavalry. Cavalry being a mount unit will attack Archers. For tactical reasons and to safeguard your Archers, a pilot wave consisting heavily of pikemen are sent to reduce this threat.
Although pikemen are expensive to build, they are not as valuable as Archers and therefore your primary intention should be to save Archers first.
However, pikemen should not be used for high level NPC attacks like NPC 10. For reasons not yet clear, pikemen seem to cause some form of troop queue issues in terms of rounds due to which the losses on Archers are higher.

Warrior units

Warriors are the horde forces in this game. They are extremely inexpensive, build time is the quickest and are easy to feed.
Warriors are used as both meat shield and as layers. In layman terms, warriors are used to attack targets to take out enemy fortifications like traps and trebuchets in large numbers BEFORE the main attacking forces consisting mainly of Archers are sent out.
Warriors are also used as in rainbow waves. These troops like workers and scouts are used in small numbers for tactical advantage as part of a single wave where archers form the majority troop type.
When the battle dynamics play out, these weaker troops will give an advantages of a round or two for the attacking archers to get within the range of the Archer's Towers. This elongates the life of the attacking archers since ATs have longer range than traditional archers. The layering troops like the Workers are at best used as suicidal forces in advance battle techniques.

Scout Units

As the name suggests, scouts are used for extracting intelligence. The Scouts will arrive at the enemy city and will provide detailed analysis of the enemy city.
The level of intelligence is controlled by the level of the "Informatics" technology. Depending on your city's informatics level, the scouts will be able to transmit details like resources, troops, technology, buildings etc.
Important to note that the scout can be confused into providing incorrect information by the use of various stratagems.
If the enemy city's gates are open, your scouts will battle the enemy scouts first. If your are unable to kill a minimum of 10% of the enemy scouts, there will be no intelligence gathered at all. However, unless you win the scout battle, all your scouts will be able to transmit are scouts versus scouts battle statistics.
It is advisable to send a high attack hero with your scouts if you are anticipating high number of defending scouts in the enemy city. The attack hero will add to the combat power during the scouts versus scouts battle.
Scouts are also used as part of waves while sending rainbow attacks.

Worker Units

In Evony Age 2 much like the Age 1, Workers are the mule. They have almost no fighting capability, are cheap and carry massive amounts of resources.
The Workers are required for any new city constructions. Every new city built from scratch requires 250 workers plus resources. These slow moving and weak troops are used to haul resources in battle and are likely to be used by smaller players since their alternative, the Transporters are much more expensive, take more time to build but carry way more resources.
Its important to understand the the workers like scouts and transporters will hang back till the end to enter the battle dynamics. A more experienced player will use them as a layer in sending out attacks to enemy cities with other weaker and cheaper troops like scouts, warriors or pikemen.
When the battle dynamics play out, these weaker troops will give an advantages of a round or two for the attacking archers to get within the range of the Archer's Towers. This elongates the life of the attacking archers since ATs have longer range than traditional archers. Archer Units

Archers is by far the most important and useful of all the unit types available in this game. They are economical, relatively quicker to build when you compare it to high damage mechanical troops and are light on the wallet.
The major difference between Evony Age 2 and Age 1 is the cost of upkeep of Archers. In Age 1, Archers cost 9 food each per hour but in Age 2 the upkeep is less than half - 4 per hour.
Therefore it is easier to maintain large numbers of Archers in Age 2.
Archers are range units and that is something which sets it apart from every other unit type available in the game. A range unit does not need to come face to face with enemy troops to build an offence. This means that an Archer can fire form a distance and keep killing advancing enemy forces which all the enemy forces can do is take the hits and move closer to the archers until they are in combat range.
However, Archers are weak against Cavalry units. Cavalry units being mount units travel much faster than any other troop types. This caused the Archers to overshoot and miss their targets while the Cavalry moves in ducking volleys of arrows. Once the Cavalry is in its combat range, its game over for Archers who are terrible at man to man combat and will be killed in droves by the Cavalry.
Another nemesis of the Archers are the Archer's Towers. The AT have three times the range of a foot Archers and will rip apart of your Archer numbers before your foot archers are even in range.
To counter these effects, you should always have a rainbow accompanying your Archers whether its an pvp attack or an NPC. Workers, warriors and scouts are commonly used troops for rainbow composition.

Loyalty Stuck at 1

Both in Evony Age 2 and Age 1 you may have come across situations where the city loyalty is stuck at 1 over hours at ends making it possible for that city to be reinforced or a speech text to be used at the last minute and ruin your grand plans.

The reason for this glitch in the game is due to your excessive attacks. If a city has loyalty of 1 and public grievance of 99, it will hang at loyalty 1. This happens because the city is unable to gain any more grievance. There is a workaround which you may find useful but you should have read this post before the situation happens because its a preventive measure.

We all know that when the loyalty of a city reaches the threshold of 15, public grievance starts and drops the loyalty by 1 every 6 minutes. Seasoned players will send one attack every 6 minutes to take advantage of this and let the city topple on its head. The solution is very simple. DO NOT DO THIS.

Keep sending your loyalty waves as you normally would. True, excessive waves will not do anything to reduce the loyalty after it reaches the threshold of 15 but additional waves will always add to the grievance.

Your aim is to get the grievance to 100 before the loyalty gets to 1. Keep attacking until the grievance gets to 100 even if the loyalty is in double digits. The goal of all this is not reducing loyalty by attacks but increasing public grievance by these attacks.

Once the loyalty reaches let’s say 10, it should take approximately 60 minutes before the city is prime for a takeover. Just remember to keep sending an attack every six minutes after the public grievance has reached 100 because your opponent may have the achievement bonus which reduces his grievance by a set amount.

If you have read this post after you faced this situation, cross your fingers and hope the owner of that city doesn’t come online anytime soon. The loyalty will remain stuck at 1 until the population of that city corresponds to what it actually should be at a loyalty of 1. This gradual decrease of population takes time and it depends of the actual population of that city versus what it should be at the loyalty of 1. Example – The city’s population limit is 10,000 and the loyalty is stuck at 1 but the actual population is 200. Now until the city’s population has reduced to 100 (1% of 10,000), it will remain stuck at the loyalty of 1. Once it has reduced to 100, the loyalty will decrease to 0.

Capturing an NPC 10

One of the major requirements for winning your King or Queen in Evony Age 2 is for you to successfully capture an NPC 10. An NPC 10 is not as difficult as it might seem but it does require careful planning to reduce losses which should be your goal. Remember, every unit cost resource, so every lost unit should be treated as lost food/lumber/stone/iron. This will give you are more holistic picture. Also, there is a video embedded in this post that I made for this website. All attacks are stopped at loyalty 40 because you’ll have an idea about how to take the NPC 10 by then.

To successfully capture an NPC 10, you should have a strong attack hero in your arsenal already. Inexperienced players make the initial mistake of trying to level all heroes at once. This is the wrong approach. You should aim to use your topmost attack hero in farming and raids as much as possible so that he gains the most amount of experience and thereby higher attack power. This means fewer losses later on in the game. Once you have reached a stage where your cities are producing more resources than you can use, you should bounce off your other heroes on NPCs with the cheaper warriors and level them up.

Now, back to the NPC 10. Below are the troops in an NPC 10:

Warriors: 400,000
Traps: 11,000
Abatis: 5500
Archer’s Tower: 3666
Rolling Log: 2200
Defensive Trebuchet: 1375

If you look at the troop composition, there are only Warriors in the NPC 10 and then the ATs are worth noticing. Throwing Warriors at it will do no good since Warriors are ranked very low in the troops scale and would enter the battle early. This means that your troops will face the traps first and then the entire horde of Warriors needs to be tackled.

Why Layer your Attacks

Archers are the best option because they will make easy work of the warriors. However, you should notice the traps and the AT will also create problems. Trap score the lowest in the Evony’s game engine. This means they will enter the battle first. Next would have been warriors but if we send only archers, the ATs will jump the queue are start shooting. This will require you to add layering so that your Archers are not the first troop type to show their face at the NPCs gates but they also need to be in large numbers to combat the warriors.

Troops Required:

Archers: 400,000
Warriors: 400,000
Workers: 100,000
Scouts: 100,000

First Attack

The first wave should consist of 2000 each of Workers, Warriors, Scouts and rest Archers. We are including workers, warriors in the mix because they rank lower than Archers and will be targeted first by the enemy fortifications giving enough time to your Archers to move ahead and get in range of the ATs. Remember, ATs have a higher range than normal archers and can shoot farther. In order to get in range, these 2000 workers and warriors act as distractions. The Scouts will stay back until all troops are at the wall. When this happens, scouts will rush and since their speed is extremely high, they will cross the rest of your troops and throw themselves at the wall and trigger the traps. THIS ATTACK HAS TO BE LEAD BY YOUR MAIN HERO.

Meat Shields

The First wave should have taken out everything in the NPC except the abatis which we don’t count. You now need to follow up with 3 waves consisting of 2000 each of Workers, Scouts, Archers and Rest Warriors. The meat shield is basically expendable troops. Since Warriors are the quickest to build, we use them in heavy numbers. Since the NPC has very few troops compared to what we had in the first wave, these three waves will be just killing off healed troops and the fortifications which have been repaired.

Pre-Loyalty Waves

Send 5 to 6 waves each of 20,000 Warriors, 20,000 Archers, 2000 Workers, 2000 Scouts. They are designed to kill further healed troops though they will be very low in numbers.

By this time all your Heroes should be out of the city. Remember not to give any gap between these waves because time means spawned troops for the NPC.

Loyalty Waves

Once your Heroes have returned from the NPC, send 9 to 10 waves of 20,000 workers and 20,000 archers per wave. These are just to kill spawned troops and reduce loyalty. The first of these waves should be lead by your strongest hero because we have wasted some time waiting for your heroes to return home and now there are some warriors in the NPC.

Keep repeating the loyalty waves until you have the NPC 10 captured. Remember unlike human players, an NPC does not have a loyalty auto drop rule. You need to waste as little time as you can between attacks.

Capturing an NPC 8

In order to qualify for your King/Queen in Evony Age 2, you need to capture an NPC 8 and then an NPC 10. For a new player or someone who has been playing a couple of months, an NPC 8 can be quite difficult to capture. I would suggest that you try capturing smaller NPCs like levels 5 and 6 so that you understand the relevance and importance of timing an attack in Evony.

Before I detail the best way to capturing an NPC 8, lets look at what an NPC 8 holds:

The hero of an NPC changes every time you scout it. The wisest thing to do is to scout the NPC until you find a low level hero. Once you find the low level hero, stop scouting that NPC completely.

Another important factor is your main hero's attack stats. The minimum attack attribute of your main hero should be in the range of 170+ to minimize losses. The higher the attack attribute, the lower your losses. I have used a 270 attack hero "Queen" for this example.

Also, you should have the NPC as close to your city as possible. If you have a vacant field just next to your city, wait until it grows to level 8, capture it and build a city. Abandon it right away and you will have an NPC 8 next to your city. This is important since NPCs regenerate troops and fortifications quickly. Lost time means more troops to kill. In another post I have discussed how this happens.

You should also have a high level Rally Spot. In another post I have discussed why this is important.

Disable auto heal from your Rally Spot before starting the attacks. This is because auto heal is almost four times more expensive that manual heal. You can keep healing manually between attacks to keep cost low.

Main Attack: Send 2000 each of Workers, Warriors, Scouts, Pikemen, Swordsmen and rest Archers. Send this attack with your main hero. The layering of troops here is Very important since Evony game engine plays out battles based on rounds. The foot troops (Workers, Warriors, Pikemen, Swordsmen) attack foot units first. The same happens from the NPC point of view. Therefore while the rounds play out and your 2000 each layers are killed, your Archers (Range) have time to strike Archer Towers (Range) and Archer (Range) units of the NPC.

Remember, Foot attacks Foot first, Range attacks Range First, Mount attacks Mount first. Exception: Mount will attack Archers first if there are any in the layer. Scouts are not treated as Foot and will go last but will attack enemy scouts first.

Loyalty Waves: The next 9 waves (assuming you have a level 10 Rally Spot) should contain 2000 each of Workers, Scouts, Pikemen, Swordsmen, Archers and rest Warriors. These waves are meant to kill healed/regenerated units and fortifications. The bulk of these waves should be warriors since they are cheap to build.

Keep sending Loyalty waves continuously as your troops return from battle until you capture the NPC 8.

NOTE: You NEED to have a vacant city slot to capture any city in this game.

I am avoiding Cavalry as a loyalty wave since these are expensive and for newer players it would prove uneconomical.

NPC 1 to 10 Resources and Troops

An NPC in Evony Age 2 is a barbarian city which is part of the game's engine. It is owned by the game itself and can be conquered by a player. NPCs are split by levels, from level 1 which is weakest to level 10 which is the strongest. There are FOUR levels of HISTORIC CITIES - Level 12, 14, 16 and 18 which will be discussed separately.

The troop mix of an NPC will increase as per the level. It is possible to farm (attack for resources) an NPC up to level 5 without any losses at all. From level 6 and up there will always be some loss but the numbers will depend on certain factors - level of the NPC, defending Hero attributes, Your Hero attributes, Troop mix, Technology Level, Hero Gear etc... More on NPC farming in a future blog entry.

An NPC can fully regenerate its resources in 8 hours. This means that you can farm each NPC thrice every 24 hours for maximum results.

NOTE: An NPC will regenerate its troops and fortification by 10% every 6 minutes. However its repair rate for fortifications like Traps, Abatis, Archer Towers etc. is 18% per attack whereas it is 10% for troops.

This means that if an NPC had 1000 warriors and 1000 traps before your attack, it will have 100 warriors and 180 traps immediately post the attack due to heal and repair. After 6 minutes, it will have 200 warriors and 280 traps. This example is assuming you were able to kill/destroy everything in your first attack.

Building a second, third or fourth City

Now that you have built your first city in Evony Age 2 the way you want to, you should build successive cities to grow. A badly planned city will do much more harm than good to you.

Not only would you have to deal with wasted resources but the city will be more or less worthless to you. You city should be carefully planned and this post will try to help you with some tips.

Here is my suggested path for building successive cities:

1st City: Food/Stone/Wood/Iron
2nd City: Wood
3rd City: Iron
4th City: Food

NOTE: By the time you are done with the fourth city, you should convert the first into a purely Wood city. The combination then should be Wood, Wood, Iron, Food.

You will still need 1 each of stone quarry , 1 lumber mill, 1 Iron mine per city so account for that. This is purely due to the requirement of support structures like the Wall. Once you have maxed the support structures, you can get rid of these extra fields and replace them with your city's main resource field.

An ideal city should have the following with a level 9 town hall (TH):

Cottages: 6 of these is ideal. If you are building an Iron city, you will need 8. Newbies tend to think more cottages equate to more troops. This is INCORRECT. You should account for training time of troops as well and this misconception is clearly defeated.

Barracks: 14 barracks per city is desirable. Once you have no need for support structures like the Forge and Stable, you should replace such structures with Barracks.

More Barracks mean quicker troops. This is very important for survival. From my own experience I can say that when scouting for targets, an attacker will perceive the defenders experience in the game just by looking at the town structure.

Warehouse: This is the most useless structure in the entire game. An attacker who has his technologies researched correctly can plunder away most of your resources in the warehouse. My suggestion is to NEVER build this structure.

Beacon Tower: Build this as soon as you can in your city. A Beacon Tower works like an Early Warning System and will make your reports button blink constantly if you are being attacked.

Wall: Needless to say another important structure but just blindly upgrading it will not help. I suggest that you add fortifications like Traps, Abatis and Archer Towers to the brim before you upgrade it to the next level. A naked Wall is of no use.

Marketplace: You will come to respect this badly animated building as you progress in the game. The marketplace is where you buy/sell resources. Early in the game when the server might have just been launched, the price per resource will nearly be the same. However, as the game progresses, you will find that stone becomes dirt cheap whereas wood and iron max out. Food will stay competitive throughout although cheaper early in the game than later on.

Workshop: This building will also gain importance as you progress in the game. The workshop is used to research hero gear and add star levels. The hero gear will add to each of your hero's attributes (attack/politics/intelligence). A maxed out level 100 King/Queen can have a max "pure" attribute of 185. A level 5 researched hero gear will 4 to 5 star level each can shoot this to the area of 250 to 260. An increase of 60 points approximately is a huge gain even if you are a defensive player.

Forge: Required as a prerequisite for construction of the Wall and for Hero Gear research. You can demolish this building once you have your Wall maxed out and your Hero Gear researched completed to the level desired.

Stable: Required as a prerequisite for construction of the Relief Station and for Hero Gear research. You can demolish this building once you have your Relief Station maxed out and your Hero Gear researched completed to the level desired.

Relief Station: Another important building. This building will reduce the traveling time between your cities. This can make or break your city in the event of an incoming attack. A level 9 Relief Station can reduce the troop traveling time by 90%. This time bonus also applies to reinforcements to and from your allies.

Embassy: This building is used for maintaining connection with your alliance. You should have this building maxed to level 9 per city. Also, ensure that the check box "Allow allied troops to garrison" is checked when open the Embassy. Your alliance members cannot reinforce you if this box is not checked. The maximum number of reinforcements at a time is limited by the level of the Embassy.

Inn: This building is required for the construction of the Feasting Hall and is used for recruiting heroes. The level of the Inn is up to the lord to pick but I would not go above level 5. Once you have recruited the maximum number of heroes, you should demolish building as it is completely useless after the recruitment process.

Feasting Hall: The Feasting Hall is used to house your heroes. The maximum number of heroes in your city is limited by the level of your Feasting Hall. This building should be at least level 9 per city and level 10 in your attack cities.

Rally Spot: The Rally Spot is THE most important building in your city closely followed by the Town Hall and the Wall. The Rally Spot determines the number of attacks and amount of troops per attack (wave). Each level of the Rally Spot increases the number of allowed troops per wave by 10,000 and increased the wave limit by 1. A level 10 Rally Spot will let you send 10 waves with maximum 100,000 troops per wave totalling 1,000,000 troops at any given point of time. I suggest each player to upgrade the Rally Spot to level 10 using a Michelangelo Script when possible.

Below is how your city should look like once you are done with most of the research:

Barracks: 14 to 16 (All level 9 or more)

My recommendation is not to have more than 6 to 8 level 9 cottages per city. Cottages take up building slots which are more useful when Barracks are built on them. Besides, the extra population is going to do no good to you unless you are taxing your city heavily thereby reducing loyalty.

Rally Spot

The Rally Spot in Evony Age 2 is one of the main buildings in this game along with the Barrack, The Wall and the Relief Station.

The level of your Rally Spot decides how many attacks (waves) can you send at one time along with how many troops can be sent per wave.

Exercise: This is an option available within the Rally Spot to play out a mock battle to check win/loss and troop losses BEFORE you march your troops out. Although this is not very accurate, the option will give some idea about battle sequence to new players.

March: This will allow you to enter coord of your target and send troops directly. This option is helpful when you have a city marked under Coord List and is available under the favourite list.

Medical Camp: This is where all your wounded troops are kept. You should heal them as soon as possible otherwise they will slowly die. Healing costs gold. The Auto Heal option allows you to automatically heal troops but it costs 4 times the gold. You should enable auto heal only when you log off from Evony so that your troops can heal if your city is attacked while you are away.

The check box of “Open Gates to fight” is very important and will decide the outcome of a battle. If this option is unchecked, you troops will not take part in the battle if you are attacked. Only the Wall and its fortifications will be used as defence. You troops are safe. However, even an army much smaller than you can defeat you if your gates are closed. Also, your Alliance members cannot reinforce you if the city gates are closed.

If you have a fairly decent army depending on the age of the server, you should have your gates open. This will allow your troops to participate in defence and also engage enemy scouts (provided you have scouts).

Wall

Same as Evony Age 1, the Wall is your first line of defence but a naked wall is as good as being without one.

The wall has spaces for fortified unit which add defence to your city. These are very important and should be constructed first BEFORE you upgrade your wall to the next level. A wall without defence is of no use at all, its as good as not being there.

Each level of wall upgrade will give your more spaces. These spaces should be used for adding fortification straightaway before you upgrade your wall to the next level.

In the event of an attack, your Wall and fortified units will be your first line of defence. If your gates are closed at the rally spot, then only your Wall and fortified units fight. If the gates are open, the troops garrisoned in the city also take part in the battle.

Unit types Traps, Abatis, Rolling Logs & Defensive Trebuchets are for one time use. i.e. they will be destroyed after the battle depending on how many are actually used. A small number of them will be repaired depending on your research level for technology “Machinery”. Archer’s Tower are the only unit type which will require reconstruction if they are destroyed, not used (like the others). They also have a good range and naturally are more popular amongst players.

In my personal experience, I have found the below combination to work best and are the more cost effective provided there are a decent amount of troops in the city (300k Archers, 200k Warriors, 50k Swordsmen, 50k Pikemen) for defence and the gates are open:

Traps: 1000
Abatis: 1000
Archer’s Tower: 17333

This combination is for a level 10 wall. I do not use Rolling Logs since they are too expensive for mass build and defensive trebuchets take too long to build.

Any troop which is not able to overcome the basic wall defence within 100 rounds of battle automatically die and the attacking hero looses 5 loyalty points. Practically, this can only happen in case of a scout bomb, where large numbers of scouts are send on attack to an enemy city. A scout has no attack and hence is not able to overcome the basic wall defence. This is change from Evony Age 1 and players accustomed to Age 1 tactics fail to realise this difference.

Workshop

In Evony Age 2, the workshop has been given the most importance. The Workshop is where the Hero Gear is upgraded. The Hero Gear level is equal to that of the Workshop to research and equip. The Hero Gear level and the cap on the Hero level is the major game changer in this edition and takes a lot to adapt to for those used to playing virtually unlimited level heroes in Age 1.

For example: You have research Mount Training to level 9 in one of your cities. The Hero in that city will get the travel time reduction bonus as per the level 9 of mount training. However, if you move the same or any hero to a city which has a level 8 workshop, the bonus will be provided as per level 8 mount training.

So, the Hero Gear level equipped on a Hero is calculated at the level of research done or the level of the workshop, whichever is lower. The maximum hero gear level is fixed at 10.

The following Hero Gear are available for research in the Workshop and their available level of research will increase as per the level of the Workshop.

NOTE: All Hero Gear can be applied to any one attribute (Attack/Politics/intelligence) at one time using the one click change option in the Hero window. The exception is Mount Training which does not add to any of the attributes but complements the speed of the Hero.

The Charm and the Ring are counted twice and provide 2x bonus. These should be upgraded first for most efficiency.

The Hero Star can further enhance the bonus provided by the Hero Gear items by using Dedicate Gems and Flawless Gems. However, the probability of failure in upgrading a star level increases by level. i.e. it is harder to upgrade from level 8 star to 9 star than from level 0 star to level 1 star. A failed star upgrade will reduce the star level from its earlier position back to 0.

The star level is available from level 1 to level 14. The gems, both dedicate and flawless can be won from raids on NPC during farming and can be purchased via the shop.

Additional material like Fabric, Iron Ore, Wood, Crude Gemstone & Thoroughbred are required at different quantities along with an item The Lost Script per gear level upgrade. These too can be purchased from the shop for 2c per material and 8c per lost script. There is a very slim chance, almost next to nothing of winning such items in battle or NPC farming. Although you can win large quantities of gems if you regularly farm NPCs for food.

It is no longer possible to have huge attack points like in Age 1. The hero level is limited to level 100 (i.e. 100 points) for normal and King/Queen and level 150 (i.e. 150 points) for Historic Heroes.

The maximum attribute points per normal/King/Queen hero can be in the range of 350 to 380 and that of a Historic Hero in the range of 450 AFTER applying maximum Hero Gear plus Hero Star.

This is the biggest change in game play from Evony Age 1 to Evony Age 2.

Academy

As with Evony Age 1, the Academy is THE most important building in your city. The academy governs as well as facilitates the city wide technological upgrades. technologies once researched need not researched for each city since they are applicable to your account and not a particular city.

However, it is important to note that individual cities must meet the minimum level required for level 1 research of the particular technology in question. The only exception to this rule is Construction Technology which is applicable to all of your cities when have an academy built, regardless of their level.

The below table shows the academy level and corresponding technologies which will become available at the highest level researched previously in ANY of your cities.

Relief Station

The Relief Station also functions the same in Evony Age 2 as in Evony Age 1. The sole purpose of the relief station is to reduce travel time between cities. This holds true for both your own cities and those of your alliance members. The bonus is applicable for both reinforcements and transports.

The reduction in travel time can be further increased by upgrading city technology of compass and hero technology of “Mount Training”.
The city technology of compass will increase the relief station reduction for both reinforcements & transport and the hero technology bonus will apply only if the hero is accompanying your troops.

The relief station reduces the travel time to 50% of actual time between level 1 & 3, 33% of actual between at level 4, 25% between level 5 & 7, 20% between level 8 & 9 and 17% of actual at level 10.

There is absolutely no effect of the relief station when you are sending attacks to enemy cities. However the City technology bonus of Compass and Hero Technology bonus of Mount Training is applicable.

I suggest you upgrade the relief station to level 9 as quickly as possible since it is hugely important during wartime reinforcements and can make or break a battle for you. The Stable is a prerequisite for the construction of the relief station.

Embassy

The purpose of the embassy in Evony Age 2 is same as in Age 1. There has been no change in the use of this building. However i remains vitally important.

The Embassy is used for maintaining relations with allies. A level 1 & above Embassy will allow you to join an existing alliance whereas a level 2 & above will let you host an alliance of your own.

The embassy also allows the army of your allies to garrison in your city. It is extremely important that you check the box “Allow allied members to garrison in your city” failing which your alliance members cannot help you by reinforcements if you are under attack.

Each level upgrade of the embassy allows more waves to be garrisoned in your city with level 1 allowing one wave of maximum 100,000 troops possible to a level 10 embassy allowing a total of 1,000,000 troops. The amount of troops per wave is governed by the Rally Spot level of the alliance member reinforcing you.

Allied troops will add to your food bill and that should always be taken into account. If your city runs out of food, the next city owned by you will start footing the food bill until no more food is available in any of your cities. In that event, allied troops will return back their respective owners. The embassy window will also allow you to send back garrisoned troops to their respective Lords.

It is common courtesy to reinforce your ally with food so that your troops do no become a problem for the lord who is already dealing with the headache of defending an attack.

Stable

The Stable has also been given more importance in Evony Age 2 than in Evony Age 1. The stable is used in technological upgrade, Hero technology as well as for qualifying to build other buildings.

The Stable is used to research Horseback Riding technology which is required for certain troops types like Cavalry & Cataphract. This building is also a prerequisite for building the Relief Station which is a very important building.

The Stable is also used for upgrade Hero technology – Mount Training which provides a speed bonus to your heroes.

Forge

Unlike Evony Age 1, the Forge has been provided with a bit more attention in Evony Age 2. The Forge is useful in both technological upgrades as well as for Hero gear upgrade.

The Forge is required for the research of the Military Science technology which gives you a bonus on the training speed of your troops. Also, a level 2 forge is required to build a Workshop and the Wall. Both of these buildings are the centrepiece of the Age 2 edition which proves a major game changer. This building is also required for level upgrade of the Metal Casting technology which enhances the Iron production by 10% per research level.

The forge is also required to research Hero technologies like Weaponry and Shield Construction and should be upgraded to level 9 as and when required until you have upgraded the Hero gear to the required level.

Warehouse

Similar to what is offered in Evony Age 1, the Warehouse is used to safeguard specific quantities of resources from plundering. The capacity of the warehouse is capped by its level and can be distributed between the four resource types – Food, Lumber, Iron and Gold.

The capacity of the warehouse can be increased by the “Stockpile” technology. However there are various options available to the attacking army to compromise your warehouse’s ability. The “Privateering” technology can be used to reduce the safe limits of your warehouse by 3% to a total of 30% for level 10. Also Stratagems can be applied to reduce the effect the warehouse.

Word of advise: Given the small amount of savings over the construction costs along with the number of options available to the enemy to compromise your warehousing capabilities further, I would strongly recommend not to build this building. Instead use the building slot for another Barrack.

Feasting Hall

Just like Evony Age 1, the Feasting Hall is the home for your Heroes in the city. Each level of the feasting hall provides one more space to accommodate a hero up to a total of 10.

The feasting hall is also where a captured hero is kept. To persuade a hero, it will cost you gold or medals or a combination of both. A hero can also be lost if his loyalty is too low. In that event, your hero will be placed in the enemy’s feasting hall.

Rename: Here you can rename your hero except the Queen.
Dismiss: This button is used to fire a hero
Upgrade: Quite naturally to upgrade the level and attribute of the hero
Redistribute: You can redistribute the attributes of the hero via this option. It costs 1 Holy Water per 10 levels. Example: A level 14 hero can have his attributes redistributed. It will cost 2 Holy Water and there will be 14 attribute points available post redistribution. The point will be taken from existing points allocated to each of the attributes. This is useful when you have captured an enemy hero or recruited a new one and are not happy with the points distribution.

Reward: This option will let you reward your hero with Gold, Medals or special items like “Excalibur”, “The Wealth of Nations” or “The Art of War” which provide bonus on either Attack, Politics or Intelligence. Rewarding a hero with Gold or medals will increase its loyalty. However you should use gold and not medals until you have maxed out the need of the particular medal type which may take months.

NOTE: The King/Queen does not take a spot in the feasting hall. For a level 10 feasting hall, you may have a maximum of 11 heroes, 10 regular heroes and 1 King/Queen.

NOTE: In order to use Hero Persuasion, you need to have one vacant slot in the Feasting Hall.

Beacon Tower

in Evony Age 2 just like Evony Age 1, the Beacon Tower act like an early warning system for incoming attacks. Each level of the beacon tower unlocks more detailed information from incoming attacks. The Beacon Tower is extremely important for defence but in Evony Age 2 it can be bluffed by using Stratagems. Also, Informatics technology is highly important since the Beacon Tower provides more detailed information for higher level informatics in conjunction with a high level Beacon Tower.

Town Hall

In Evony, the Town Hall is the main administrative centre of your city and it is no different in Evony Age 2. The Town Hall will let you set production rates, set tax rates, rename the city, allow you to use levy and comforting and give you a snapshot view of all the buildings in the city.

The level of the Town Hall also governs the number of Valleys you may have. The Town Hall Level also decides the number of resource fields available in the city. Each upgrade will allow more valleys and resource fields.

NOTE: NPC 12, 14, 16 and 18 also have a level 10 Town Hall therefore their maximum valley and resource field limit is same as a level 10 Town Hall city.
