Season 6 of MASKast concludes with Jason and Wyatt reviewing M.A.S.K. episode #60 "Venice Menace." The plot for this episode features V.E.N.O.M. learning of the location of Cleopatra's lost ship of gold. Mayhem uses a special substance to turn the surrounding waters to jelly which allow Bruno Shepard's Stinger to transverse and dig up the ship. it's up to M.A.S.K. to foil the plan.

Voice Actor Brendan McKane Passes Away, Our MASKast 53 Video Tribute

In case you are not connected with the M.A.S.K. community of fans on social media, we recently lost one of our beloved voice actors. Brendan McKane passed away on Dec 29, 2020 after a battle with mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer that was caused by his exposure to asbestos when he was 18 years old. His wife and fellow voice actor Sharon Noble confirmed in a message to supporters from her GoFundMe campaign that helped with their medical bills.

Dec 29, 2020: Brendan passed away a few hours ago. My son and I were with him, but he was completely unconscious, with a machine breathing for him. We had only about 10 minutes with him because it happened very fast. I stroked his head and told him how much we love him, but he couldn't hear me. My heart is broken, and all I can do is scream and cry. He was my life for 43 years. I'm so sorry to have to tell you he's gone. Thank you all for your kindness and care and generosity.

We were very saddened by the news and can hear our personal thoughts on a recent Behind the M.A.S.K. guest appearance. Our hearts go out to Sharon and their children during this difficult time. While we have only personally spoke to Brendan and Sharon in a brief 2015 interview, it did not take long to realize that they are both kind and loving people to their family, friends, and fans. While Brendan had an acting career that spanned three decades in theater, animation, and television, he also worked in real estate and was a practicing attorney. He was a remarkable man by all accounts.

As I mentioned, we were honored to have interviewed Brendan and Sharon on MASKast 53 which gave us and our listeners some great insight into their lives as actors and beyond. As a tribute to his life and career, we recently added visuals to our podcast and have posted on YouTube to enjoy. Most images were found online but also several were provided by M.A.S.K. voice actor Doug Stone and the initial character montage by Kero Wack.

New Retrofied Magazine Showcases Unproduced Kenner M.A.S.K. Toys!

The cover story of the preview issue is a "Brief History of Oral History of M.A.S.K." featuring interviews with former Kenner employee Bill Kraimer, Season 2 "Racing" episodes director Michael Malian, voice actors Doug Stone and Sharon Noble, IDW editor-in-chief John Barber, and IDW comic writer Brandon Easton. A fun new M.A.S.K. fan site recently launched featuring rotating 3-D images of the Kenner figures and vehicles. The creator is Robert (and his son) from Epic Toy Box who has been active in the fan community for years now. His inspiration for the website comes from the history of M.A.S.K. and the early documents and concept art that referred to the franchise as MASK Force.

MASKForce.com is a unique website that is months in the making. In fact, Robert tells us that he originally envisioned the website about 5 years ago and just now has become a reality in time for M.A.S.K.'s 35th anniversary. While it's still a work in progress, the website showcases the figures and vehicles by allowing you to see each one 360 degrees. But not only that, you can click and spin the images to your preference.

Beyond the figures and vehicles, MASK Force has images of carded figures and comic book covers as well as a list of resources within the fan community. Robert is also looking to collaborate with other fans who want to showcase their collections, dioramas, displays, and artwork customs.

Reflecting on Retrocon: Friendships

There's something about friendships gained...

A little over 5 years ago, myself and Jason Gross were invited to join Bill Faries to host a celebrity panel with voice actor Doug Stone.

As a young boy around 9-10 years old, also a typical kid who enjoyed watching my fair share of cartoons, I sometimes pondered about who the characters really were. Mental questions included: Were they real? Was it a different person? Did they look the same like wear the clothing depicted?

Between my childhood and 5 years ago, I began to look up voice actors and learned who the person was behind the voice. Fast forward to my late 30s and a fan of the 80s era, I never truly thought to step out into the conventions "cons" to go see a favorite celebrity or walk through the tables until the invitation was given by Tony R. Tuski.

Up to this point, I often thought I'd never be the person who would call out or chase down a celebrity if I happened to see them in a convention or spotting them in a restaurant. I still consider myself not to be "that person."

However, in 2013, Jason and I had the honor to speak with Doug over Skype for an interview for MASKast. It was a delight to speak with him and learn what it was like for him to work for the cartoon M.A.S.K. Jumping to 2015, the chance to welcome him to Retrocon, to work alongside him during the panel, and to continue talking afterwards is still one of those awesome memories ingrained in my memory.

During Retrocon 2015, the thrill of meeting not only Doug, but Bill Faries and then to visit with other celebrities of the 80s to include John Moschitta Jr (Mr Micro Machines), Larry Kenny (Lion-O- Thundercats, Bluegrass-Silverhawks, Cocoa Puffs Kookoo Bird), and Michael Bell (Lance-Voltron, Handy Smurf, Prowl/Sideswipe/Scrapper-Transformers, Duke-GI Joe) was a thrilling experience.

Yet, I can honestly say I gained 2 friends that day: Doug Stone and Bill Faries. Thank you gents!

Voice Actor Sharon Noble Creates GoFundMe for Husband Brendan McKane's Cancer Fund

Sad news to pass along M.A.S.K. fans. We just learned recently that our beloved voice actor Sharon Noble has taken to GoFundMe for help with her husband's medical bills. He is of course, Brendan McKane, who also voiced several characters on M.A.S.K. include the arch-villain Miles Mayhem.

Wyatt and I have had the pleasure of interviewing them both on MASKast 53 and they were so gracious with their time. They've been interactive with the fan community for years and are now asking for your help with medical costs adding up from Brendan's mesothelioma.

Here is Sharon's words from the GoFundMe page:

My husband, Brendan McKane, who originally voiced the characters Miles Mayhem, Alex Sector, Floyd Malloy, Jacques LaFleur, and Nevada Rushmore, on the M.A.S.K cartoon series in 1985 has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer that is caused by being exposed to asbestos when he was 18 years old. Looking for adventure, he went to sea and worked on a tramp steamer going around the world. He worked in the boiler room were he came in contact with asbestos every day, but at that time no one knew it caused lung cancer. He is now being treated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation at the the UCLA Lung Cancer Center in Santa Monica, California where his medical bill is already over $102,000. We have Medicare health insurance, and it is paying its share, but it doesn't cover everything, and our Social Security checks are not enough to fill in the gaps. He can't work anymore, and I am his sole caregiver. A Home Care nurse comes three times a week to drain liquid out of his lung so he can breathe better, and I'm learning how to do it myself. He still very much enjoys hearing from fans from the old days, hoping that they tell the stories to their children or maybe show the YouTube videos to their children to keep the series alive. We are still friends with the other actors from the series, and we have very happy memories of those days when we were young and working at the job we love so much. I say we because I am Sharon Noble, and I voiced all the women, all the children (except Scott), and all the animals. I have set our goal at $5,000, but whatever you choose would be very welcome. The doctors tell us they expect his surgery will be two weeks in the hospital and two-three months recovery at home.

Jason and Wyatt Immortalized as M.A.S.K. Agents!

Jason and Wyatt are now (un) official M.A.S.K. and V.E.N.O.M. agents thanks to artist Kero Wack! The man behind M.A.S.K. 85 and M.A.S.K. 86 fan comics has opened up his drawing board for fans who would like to see themselves as agents. Unbeknownst to Wyatt, I contacted Kero after seeing his other agent renderings recently and gave him a short bio for each of us to use in his scheme. Within the course of a day (which is crazy!) I received both of the drawings below.

For Wyatt, the color scheme was an obvious pick...The General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard. His mask "Ampro", the Alex Sector-like wrist computer and the VU meter displayed on the mask's forehead is all in homage to the AM radio board he now owns (which we used at the radio station where worked together.) His codename "Wonder" is a reference to his nickname in high school, "Wonder Wyatt." His vehicle Phoenix is in reference to his car in high school which is also referenced in the MASKast podcast intro.

For Jason, I've had boomboxes on my brain recently so I decided to turn myself into one (this one in particular.) I chose "Retro" as my codename because if you know me, my middle name practically is Retro. Of course, the mask name "Ghettoblaster" is from the slang term for boomboxes back in the '80s. I knew I wanted the speakers as the sides of the mask and a telescoping antenna because why not. And since my color scheme was primarily dark, I decided to be a V.E.N.O.M. agent. My vehicle references my current vehicle which is a Nissan Frontier.

V.E.N.O.M. is after an older woman who unknowingly is in possession of some $20 bill printing plates. Hungry to print some counterfeit money, Mayhem and his thugs attempt to kidnap the woman who is being protected by Matt Trakker and M.A.S.K. agents. The pursuit leads to an epic battle between the factions at Boulder Hill.

M.A.S.K. Animated Series Voice Director Stu Rosen Passes Away at 80

Emmy and Peabody award winner Stu Rosen known for his contributions in American children's television has passed away at 80 years old. Rosen created the acclaimed Dusty's Treehouse show in 1970 that ran for a decade and also appeared in reruns on Nickelodeon. In the '80s and '90s, he would then move on to voice direction on several animated shows including M.A.S.K., Hulk Hogan's Rock N' Wrestling, Biker Mice From Mars, Defenders of the Earth, Captain N the Game Master, The Legend of Prince Valiant, Little Shop, Kissyfur, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Rosen also voice directed the feature film My Little Pony: The Movie, the TV special The Glo Friends Save Christmas, the fan-favorite TV short Pryde of the X-Men, and Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock.

Rosen is also credited as the casting director for several animated shows including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Eek!stravanganza, The Incredible Hulk (1996), and the aforementioned Captain N: The Game Master. He also contributed his own voice talent as supporting characters on several of the shows he directed.

I'm friends with a few M.A.S.K. voice actors who worked with Stu Rosen and they posted these comments on Facebook:

I must acknowledge someone's passing....I came to Los Angeles in 1985 to voice on an animated series, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) for network TV and ended up doing 8 characters over 75 episodes. Our original Director was Marsha Goodman, but other commitments meant she had to move on and hand the directing reigns over to Stu Rosen. Stu directed the majority of the episodes. A few years later, when he was between gigs, I was able to get him a few v/o jobs, as I'd also moved into directing...although, at that time, it was dubbed anime, not original animation. I had not seen him in decades but just learned that he's passed away, at 80, of cancer. - Doug Stone
