How To Get A Rock-Solid Wireless Internet Connection

As a computer tech with over 35 years in the business, I've seen a lot of Internet connection problems. That’s especially true with WIFI.

The most common problem is in establishing a ‘good’ connection between the remote computer and the wireless router. Many people don’t realize that just because you’re receiving a signal from your wireless router, (AP) you still may not be able to log onto the Internet. Here’s the problem.

A weak or noisy internet connection is usually caused by lost or scrambled data packets. These damaged packets are constantly being 're-sent' between the router and the receiving computer. This will slow down your connection considerably and could even keep you from getting on the Internet at all.

There are several ways you can improve these weak WIFI signals. The easiest is to move the wireless router. If possible, try to locate your router near the center of the building. I’ve picked up WIFI signals from as far away as 1,000 feet when there were no obstacles blocking the transmission. On the other hand, I’ve also had a hard time just getting the signal to go from one end of a house to the other.

This can be especially true if the router is located on a different floor than the receiving computer. The more walls and floors the signal passes through, the weaker it gets.

If you can’t locate the router near the center of the building, there are several other things you can do. First, try moving the receiving computer to a different location. Even turning it in a different direction may help. Laptops often have the WIFI antenna built into the monitor so just turning the laptop slightly might be all you’ll need to do to improve the reception.

In general, I’ve found that USB Internet adapters work much better than laptop internal receivers. The reason is...these external adapters come with a three to five foot cord allowing the adapter to be placed high in the air and away from obstacles that might be blocking the WIFI signal. Unfortunately, this means dragging around an extra device which is not what I really want to do. Luckily, in most cases your internal WIFI device will get the job done just fine.

If you need to reach out to an AP that’s hundreds or even thousands of feet away, you’ll need to investigate adding a high-gain antenna and a USB Internet adapter. This is actually old technology. Ham radio buffs have been building hi-gain antennas for decades allowing them to receive signals from around the world. There are various antenna designs available that practically anyone can build. For a few dollars, you can boost your range considerably.

The world record for a WIFI connection using ‘only’ a hi-gain antenna is 238 miles! You’re probably not planning on challenging any records, but it's pretty common to see people connecting to wireless routers up to a mile or more away, just by using DIY antennas.

If you’re not satisfied with your wireless Internet connection, try some of the things I've mentioned. They should help. If you’re still having problems then I’d look into building your own hi-gain WIFI antenna. It will provide the ultimate in wireless performance.

Sql Database Corruption Result In “table Error”

A corrupted SQL Server database has many shortcomings, one of them being the unmountability of the database. In most cases, the corruption is caused due to these factors – file system damage, virus infection, metadata structure damage, and concurrent modification of same database component. An error message pops up when you attempt to access the database records after the database is corrupted. This error message does not allow you to view the records stored in that database component. To access data in such situations, you will need to restore the database component from an updated backup. But if in case, the backup is unavailable or has not been maintained for that particular component, then you will need to repair the database using an advanced SQL Database Recovery application.

Consider a practical scenario, where you receive the below error message when you attempt to access the records stored in your database table:

“Table error: Object ID O_ID, index ID I_ID, page ID P_ID1. The PageId in the page header = P_ID2.”

The database table error message makes the records stored in the table inaccessible. The same error pops up every time you try to open that particular database table. This is a severity level 16 error message.

Cause:

The above error message appears when DBCC asks for P_ID1 page, but found P_ID2 in the disk header. This can occur due to logical or physical damage of the SQL database.

Virtual Local Area Networks – Simplified Complexity

Virtual local area networks, or VLANs, are groupings of networked devices that act as a single LAN regardless of physical location or connections. By using a VLAN, a network administrator is able to consolidate two or more physical networks, even if these networks are configured in a wide area network. For example, it is possible to configure the customer service departments in Miami and Toronto so that they behave in the same manner as if they were physically connected. It is also possible, using a VLAN, to segment one physical network into two or more discreet logical networks. In this way on a single LAN the customer service, finance, and shipping departments could have their own virtual LANs. These VLANs, whether segmenting or consolidating, would freely exchange broadcast traffic within their own segment. Typically, in smaller network configurations a single broadcast network, with all of the network devices sharing a common wiring and switch structure, is adequate. As network complexity increases, virtual LANs offer some benefits over a standard LAN configuration.

A VLAN is used to create logical networks on a common switch and wiring structure. These logical networks isolate network traffic, restricting broadcast traffic to only the devices configured on the virtual LAN. The other network segments work independently from each other, restricting broadcast traffic and controlling the exchange of information between segments. This "sandbox effect" provides several benefits: increased security, simplified management, and improved performance.

This restriction of network traffic is a tool that an administrator can use to improve security. Using our example above, let us assume that the network is servicing three distinct departments: customer service, finance, and shipping. In the finance department, all devices that generate network requests broadcast the request to every other device on the network. The same is true about the devices in customer service and shipping. Now let us say that a hacker manages to get access to a machine in the shipping department. Using that machine, they might record the credit card information captured by the customer service department or confidential corporate information generated from the finance department. Segmenting these departments using a VLAN reduces security exposure. True, the hacked computer still has access to all of the broadcast traffic generated within the shipping department, but the packets generated by other departments are isolated and protected. In order to provide this type of isolation with a standard LAN configuration each department would have to have its own wiring and switches. Routers, in turn, would need to connect each of these LANs in order to allow them to communicate with each other. In a VLAN, the switch configures and controls all of these functions. This brings us to our next point, network complexity.

As functionality increases, so does complexity. As complexity increases, the ability to maintain a network becomes more and more difficult. Utilizing a traditional LAN configuration requires that the devices to be networked to share a unique switch and wiring structure. If multiple LANs need to communicate with one another, a router must be added and configured to exchange the information properly. If any networked devices are moved, physical changes need to be made to the wiring. In our example, if a customer service representative were moved to the shipping department, the switches and cables would need to be physically reconfigured. If a VLAN were used, all of the devices would share a common wiring and switching structure. If a device needed to be relocated, the network administrator would make a software change to the switch, adding the new device in shipping to the customer service segment.

The overall reduction in broadcast traffic improves performance on the VLAN. This reduction occurs because devices are only broadcasting packets to and listening for packets from other devices on its virtual segment. For instance, if two virtual LANs segment a physical network, each device on the VLAN would only be receiving half of the broadcast traffic; only those packets generated within their configured segment. This decrease in traffic increases available bandwidth and thereby improves performance. Consider this; in our example, cutting amount of traffic on a 100Mbps port in half effectively doubles the bandwidth.

In addition to the technical benefits of using a VLAN are the potential financial benefits. A reduction in maintenance requirements translates into a decrease in maintenance cost. An increase in network performance can produce an increase in productivity.

There is much more to virtual LANs than can be covered in this article. Cisco offers certifications, such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), which include the configuration and use of VLANs in an overall network design. CCNA training towards this certification is a good source to acquire a deeper understanding of VLANs and how they can play a role in any network design.

Printer Problems On A Network

Many people decide to have more than one computer. This could be for many reasons. If you are a part of a company you usually have more than one computer. In order to save money and resources hardware such as printers needs to be shared. These printers are normally not in the same room or at least are not close to you.

Please note that you may not be able to do this yourself if you are on a network. In larger companies this is controlled through a print server or can only be done by authorized individuals. You may need to contact your computer staff or network administrator.

What if you can’t print?

Here are some reasons:
1. The printer is out of paper. I have seen people try to print over and over again only to find out the printer is out of paper. Normally an error will appear on their screen. Most people are persistent that they can beat the system. They seem to think they are actually dealing with a living being.
2. It isn’t turned on. This is also a big one. Again! Yes again! People will constantly try to send to the printer with out ever checking it physically. Even though these printers are not supposed to be turned off, do not assume anything.
3. The power plug is disconnected. Maybe somebody moved it or just unplugged it for some reason.
4. The data cable is disconnected. Maybe somebody just bumped it or whatever.

The above reasons are approaching the problem as a physical one. The problem could also be that the driver is corrupt. This is the program the makes it work. The operating system could have something wrong with it.

How can I fix a software problem? If you are authorized to do this yourself do the following:
1. Start by uninstalling the printer program.
2. Reinstall the program.
3. Test it.
4. If it still doesn’t work try the printer on a different computer.
5. If the printer works you know something is wrong with the operating system.
6. If it doesn’t work your printer could actually be bad.

What could be wrong with the operating system?

Although many things could be wrong, check for viruses. Another possibility is that the driver you are using is not compatible to the operating system. As an example: if you are using Windows XP you must have an XP driver. A windows 98 driver may not work. If a current driver is not available you can try to use compatibility mode. If that doesn’t work, you may need to purchase a new printer.

You may need to contact the network administrator if you are on a network. It could be possible the printer you want to use is not shared on the network. Even if it shows up in the setup screen it may not really be connected due to this problem.

Another problem

If you are on a network the network cable may have become disconnected or went bad. However, if it did you will not be able to do anything associated with the network.

It works well because I have backed up the XP system. As long as I ghosted the disk C, the problem appeared. There are only Windows XP and Ghost items on System Start. I have no idea of how to visit Win7. So I spent almost all the morning to solve this problem out.

Let me tell you something about some Startup theory on Windows XP and Win 7, and how can we deal with dual start.

In windows7&XP dual system, Win7 uses bootmgr piping systems startup mode. As long as the computer finishes self-test, it will search for the active primary partition (usually disk C) and load it. Then the computer will continue reading the startup-config (that is C:\BOOT\BCD) and c:\boot.ini under the active partition. According to the stored start-up information on BCD and Boot.ini, the computer will list out the Start menus ( dual-system start-up menu). It will also list out the Microsoft Windows 7 and the old version of Windows for the dual-system user.

If you choose the former, Bootmgr will set the control power to Winload.exe (under \windows\systems) and then start up the Windows 7. If you choose the latter, Bootmgr will set the control power to NTLDR, and then start to read c:\boot.ini and list out the startup menu. The startup failure mainly occurs at Bootmgr Bootmgr、BCD、Winload.exe、Ntldr.

Now let's solve this problem out.

First of all, we need several backup files such as bootmgr, ntldt,bcd, bootsect. If you have the Windows 7 system disk, you can directly get them from it. There is another tool called EasyBCD.

Note: In order to run the EasyBCD on Windows XP, the supported system is Microsoft .NET Framework2.0

The following instructions are carried out on Windows XP. If there are any hidden files and system files, you'd better to display them. Please copy bootmgr,ntldt to disk C and copy bcd,bootsect to C:\boot\, then run EasyBCD. Please switch to the left "ADD/Remove Entries", choose the previously invalid startup menus from left windows, click Delete and add the startup menus under "Add An Entry". Please choose "Windows NT/200/XP" from Version to add the XP startup menus, set the save path as disk C and named it as Windows XP. Please choose Windows Vista/longhom from Version to add Win7 startip menus and choose disk D as the save path and named it as Windows 7. Finally click ADD Entry to save the settings.

Until now, please open Start and input cmd, go on C:\boot\ and input "bootsect /nt60 C：", restart your PC, the problem has been done.
