Sleep deprivation may result in memory loss

Our memory skills decline as we age; it’s an inevitable result of growing older. But a recent study suggests that aging adults' failure to recall a thought or two, may be caused by the one place we think we should find rest: sleep.

Clearly, a good night's sleep will never be overrated. The study, completed by University of California, Berkeley scientists found that it all comes down to the quality of sleep we have as we get older, not the quantity.

"When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information," Matthew Walker said in a statement. "But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night."

The Huffington Post summarizes the effects the study found:

During the time spent in deep sleep, the brain generates slow brain waves that carry our memories of the day from the hippocampus, where memories are stored temporarily, to the prefrontal cortex for long-term storage. As we get age, this type of sleep gets harder to come by, as older adults have a harder time falling and staying asleep than they did when they were younger. This lack of deep sleep causes "medial prefrontal cortex gray-matter atrophy" and compromised pathways between the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex, leaving memories "stuck" in the short-term memory part of the brain, only to be rewritten by new ones.

It’s important to make sure you get your beauty rest, and if you are having trouble fading off to dreamland then be sure to speak with your family doctor. Raise your concerns - your memory may thank you for it later.

When it comes to aging, we are all eager to be in the know of just about everything that can affect our daily living. From healthcare to eating right, to ensuring we are exercising our bodies, minds and social activity. The days of keeping issues hush-hush are gone, and we recognize that it is important to share information so that we are able to tackle the problem, rather than pretend it isn’t there.

Times have changed so much, that many companies and industries are trying to make their products more age-friendly. One of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the news lately is the launch of Ontario’s new ActionPlan for Seniors. According to a recent article published by the OttawaCitizen, the plan is “meant to provide better senior access to health care and to try and respond to growing and changing needs of an aging population in Ontario.”

The plan has been developed on the concept of new and existing programs and initiatives to ensure that seniors and their caregivers have access to the services they need, when and where they need them. According to the Ontario website, the initiative has been organized under “three pillars:”

Healthy Seniors: Help seniors find and access services they need to be healthier and stay at home longer

Senior-Friendly Communities: Promote services and policies that enhance seniors' well-being and participation

Safety and Security: Improve programs, services and supports that help seniors live safely, independently, and with dignity

It’s an exciting start to the New Year as more and more, corporations and the government alike are starting to recognize the need for change in the business of aging.

Surround Yourself with Stimulation

Dementia is an unfair disease. It shows up when you least expect it. It’s scary, it’s confusing, and a cure, as of right now, is unknown. We try different techniques to engage our brains to help delay the onset. Eating the right foods and taking part in a physical activity at least once a day for 30 minutes are two techniques that doctors say will help stimulate your brain and delay the chance of the onset of a dementia-related disease.

A recent study conducted by Utah State University discovered that the progression of decline in brain functioning among Alzheimer’s patients (one of the many names of dementia related diseases) could be dramatically slowed if caregivers simply change the environment, writes Huff/Post50's reporter Shelley Emling.

The study found that:

“Caregivers who utilize higher levels of ‘positive’ coping strategies -- problem-focused coping, seeking greater social support, counting blessings -- were able to slow down dementia's progress as measured by a variety of global standards. Historically, patients whose caregivers rely more on "negative" coping strategies -- avoidance, blaming themselves or others, wishful thinking -- resulted in a faster decline on cognitive and functional measures, researchers said.”

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and one without a cure. Researchers and scientists are working hard to find it, but for now, we’re encouraged to ensure that we maintain an active lifestyle – be it socially, physically or mentally. Go for a walk, play a brain game, schedule a regular meet-up with friends throughout the week, it doesn’t have to be strenuous. Get out there, have fun, and engage your brain!

New Year, New You

Happy New Year! We are ringing in 2013 and all the memories of 2012 are now behind us. As always, the New Year is a traditional time for “starting fresh.” Making changes or improving on what we already have changed; setting goals and planning on how you will see those goals through. One of the most popular life changes has to do with health and fitness.

It’s not an exact statistic, but it seems like more than half of North America makes a resolution to start living healthier. Whether it is a diet adjustment or more exercise, many of us strive to make these changes that will help us lead happier and healthier lives. It isn’t always easy, but what we have to remember is to set realistic goals.

Want to know how I think you can do it?

First thing’s first: start small. Set a goal that you feel will be easier to achieve, and with time you will be able to set bigger resolutions. For example: If you want to lose weight, and are trying to go from one extreme to the other, it can be fairly detrimental to your point of view if you expect to see results right away. The fact is that losing weight takes time, but when you do it right, it gives you results. Like I said, start small, aim for a five-pound weight loss and track your progression. How long did it take you to do it? What activities did you participate in? What did you eat? These are all factors that you can monitor that will help you achieve your overall goal!

What’s more important to note is that implementing an activity into your day doesn’t have to be strenuous, and you don’t have to go at it alone. Ask a friend to join you on a walk. Participate in swim classes or take up beginners Yoga. Get your brain working and start playing challenging brainteasers. There is an abundance of activities out there for aging adults to take up!

Shelley Scott, the executive director of Flamborough Information and Community Services, suggests five resolutions that are recommended to older adults each year:

Participate in cognitive health activities. Mental health is an important aspect of health that we tend to overlook as we extol the benefits of staying physically fit. Keep your mind engaged and stimulated through a language class, book club or by playing brain games and trivia on the computer.
Exercise or start a new physical activity. Exercise doesn’t have to be exhausting, and it certainly doesn’t have to feel like work. Older adults are increasingly looking to classes such as Yoga and Tai Chi to increase physical health, meet people and widen their social circles.
Eat more fresh foods. Processed foods are easy to throw together for a meal, but they come with a host of health issues and concerns, and frankly, they’re not worth the hassle. Make a promise to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and you’ll see a noticeable difference in the way you look and feel – and it takes very little work on your end.
Make your home safer. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls each year. Many of these falls are preventable, especially if home safety tips are implemented, including moving cords out of walkways, having good lighting near beds and taping down edges of carpets and rugs.
Go for checkups regularly. Unfortunately, with age, comes an increased risk of illness and other complications such as high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Making sure that you schedule an annual checkup can help in early detection and prevention.

Whatever resolution you choose to tackle, it’s important to ensure that it benefits you in the long run, and that it brings you a happy and healthy new year!

The Joy in Being Santa

It’s the holiday season and Christmas is right around the corner. The stores are filled with people hustling and bustling, looking for that perfect gift for a special someone. It’s an overwhelming time of year, but the beauty of twinkling lights and festive spirit is captivating and brings joy to many.

My Grandmother is the hallmark of Christmas for me every year. She shops for all 23 people in my family and makes Christmas dinner. We do extend our services to bring desserts and side dishes, but every year, she and my grandfather are on the ball. It’s wonderful to see them both in the holiday spirit.

But sometimes, it isn’t this easy for all aging adults to enjoy the holidays, especially those who are in nursing facilities. That’s why there are programs like the one offered by Home Instead Senior Care called Be a Santa to a Senior. Each year, Home Instead spreads holiday cheer to lonely or financially challenged seniors through the Be a Santa program. According to their website, “the program has attracted upwards of 60,000 volunteers over the past six years distributing gifts to deserving seniors. Since introducing the Be a Santa to a Senior program, Home Instead Senior Care has helped provide 1.2 million gifts to more than 700,000 seniors.”

Or you could try The Children of Christmas Past, an organization in Burlington, ON that started in 1999 by Jill Harrington. Each year, guests of their Annual Christmas Open House bring a gift for a senior and the charity then hand-delivers the gifts Christmas morning. It’s a wonderful thought that spreads warmth across the nation. And what’s even more invigorating is the idea that anyone can participate to help someone have a memorable Christmas. Nobody should be alone during the holidays, but one small act of kindness can change how people view the world, and sometimes, that can be the greatest gift of all.

Which vehicle is the right vehicle?

Last Friday evening, the first batch of snow fell from the sky. It was such a pretty sight- a sight that I watched for an hour and a half while stuck in traffic on the typically 12-minute drive home. Although it was a frustrating experience, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like for an older adult who suffered from arthritis or diminished vision.

Driving is a luxury that gives individuals the ability to get from point A to point B. Not only is it a source of transportation that enables travel through the city, but it is also, in large part, a source of independence. It grants flexibility, reliability and freedom.

However, many aging adults that fill the 65 and up generation could be struggling with this. As we grow older, it’s normal to have the expected signs of aging, but we don’t always consider the symptoms, such as failing eye site and discomfort in joints. What’s even more telling, is that although these are recognized symptoms that can be tended to with medication, it more often than not goes unrecognized how these symptoms can affect daily living, and that includes driving.

According to Autos.ca, with data gathered from a recent AAA survey, “only one in 10 senior drivers with aging health issues are driving a vehicle that has features like keyless car entry and larger dashboard controls that can assist with conditions.” AAA aims to assist the ‘silver tsunami’ by addressing this issue and providing older adults with a list of vehicle features that can enable a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Some of the recommendations from AAA’s Smart Features for Older Drivers include:

· “Drivers suffering from hip or leg pain, decreased leg strength or limited knee range of motion should look for vehicles with six-way adjustable power seats and seat heights that come between the driver’s mid-thigh and lower buttocks. These features can make it easier for drivers to enter and exit a vehicle.”

· “Drivers with arthritic hands, painful or stiff fingers or diminished fine motor skills benefit from four-door models, thick steering wheels, keyless entry and ignition, power mirrors and seats and larger dashboard controls with buttons. These features reduce the amount of grip strength needed and reduce pain associated with turning or twisting motions.”

· “Drivers with diminished vision or problems with high-low contrast will find vehicles with auto-dimming mirrors, large audio and climate controls and displays with contrasting text helpful. These features can reduce blinding glare and make controls and displays easier to see.”

Sometimes, it isn’t just about the newest gadget installed in the car, but what can provide comfort and stability that will instill confidence in its driver. What contribution do - and could - older people make to theatre? How are ageing and later life represented on stage? Can theatre and drama be used to promote understanding, communication and creativity between different generations? These are some of the questions asked by the Ages and Stages project, based in North Staffordshire in the UK, and funded by the New Dynamics of Ageing (NDA) programme.

The project is a partnership between Keele University and the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The location for our research is the Potteries, North Staffordshire: an area with a long history of heavy industry (ceramics, coal and steel) that, over the past fifty years, has undergone considerable social and economic change and decline. Local cultural institutions have both reflected and reconstructed these changes. In particular, the New Vic Theatre (formerly the Victoria Theatre) pioneered a distinctive form of ‘social documentary theatre’ under artistic director Peter Cheeseman. The documentaries, produced between 1964 and 1994, charted social, economic and political change in the Potteries, and drew from the testimony of local people. Part of our research involved exploring historical representations of older people and ageing within these documentaries, using materials in the Victoria Theatre Archive. Then, turning our attention to contemporary representations and recollections, we interviewed 95 older people who are/have been associated with the theatre as: actors/employees; volunteers; long standing audience members; sources for the original documentaries. Finally, we drew our research data together to create a new documentary performance, titled Our Age, Our Stage, which explores ageing, intergenerational relations and the role the theatre has played – and continues to play – in the creative life of the people of North Staffordshire. This was acted by an intergenerational group, including members of the New Vic Youth Theatre and older people who had been interviewed for our research. Our Age, Our Stage was toured around local venues, including schools, a retirement village and local council, and finally performed at the New Vic Theatre to a capacity audience of 500 people in July 2012.

Ages and Stages highlighted the important role that theatre can play in providing sense of place and community. The Vic Theatre documentaries played a significant role in bringing together different groups of people – both in the process of creating the documentaries (which brought theatre employees into contact with people working in different local industries) and in the staging of the documentaries, which attracted diverse audiences to the Vic and brought generations together. People who had been interviewed for the documentaries or had family connections to the industries portrayed talked about feeling a greater sense of ownership of the theatre afterwards.

"I think I've been more intimately connected with this theatre than any other, and I regard it really as an enormous part of mental health... I'm really passionate about keeping the theatre going for the sake of people's health!" (Audience Member)

Our research also revealed the significance of the theatre as an intimate public place, often described as being like ‘home’ or ‘family’. As well as providing a sense of social occasion and ritual, interviewees also felt that the New Vic was a ‘comfortable’ place to visit alone, something particularly valued by older women. Theatre involvement was particularly significant during times of transition in later life and interviewees often became more involved with it after retirement or widowhood, either by volunteering or increasingly attending performances, talks and educational events. This could provide continued social engagement and sense of value, as well as the opportunity to develop what had often been a lifelong interest in theatre and drama. We found that the theatre provides a sense of belonging and, from that position of security, can help people build confidence, develop new skills and take risks. Interviewees also associated their theatre involvement with feeling of well-being, confidence, self-esteem and vitality.

Participants in our intergenerational theatre group kept diaries, provided us with written feedback about their involvement and discussed what impact it had had on them in a final group discussion at the end of the project. Whilst some of the benefits echo the findings from our earlier interviews, others emphasise the intergenerational aspects of the project. The following benefits were commonly mentioned:

New friendships
Increased intergenerational communication and understanding
Discovering shared passions, perceptions and experiences across generations
More positive perceptions of ageing and later life (for both younger and older people)
Increased confidence
New skills
Sense of challenge
Excitement
Broadened horizons

The Ages and Stages team have been awarded an additional year’s funding from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (from August 2012 to end July 2013) to establish a permanent intergenerational company at the New Vic Theatre, develop a new performance piece and professional training course, and scope out the idea of holding a ‘Creative Age Festival’ in North Staffordshire.

The Power of Pets

Call me crazy, but I talk to my animals. Sure, they probably don’t understand me, just as most of the time I don’t understand them. Still I find it comforting knowing that they are there to “listen.” In my opinion, they almost keep you sane. My dog will look up, cock his head and look at me as if to say, “No. Really? Tell me more.” My cat will sidle up to me if it seems I’ve had a bad day, just to let me know that “someone” is there.

We don’t give animals enough credit where credit is due. They are wonderful keepers of company. Although they do occasionally default to their rebellious nature, they are always willing to be by your side at the end of the day, and it’s comforting to know that.

Why is this so important?

Well, according to Barbara Worthington, associate editor of Aging Well, relationships with animals develop into bonds that strengthen significantly over time. Many older adults enjoy the memories of a pet they once had, and animal-assisted therapy can offer a connection that allows aging adults to remember, vocalize their recollections and smile.

However, not only does having an animal around help to increase your social behavior, but “elders’ interactions with animals can improve their self-esteem, help them cope with their losses, and boost their sense of self-worth,” says Marjorie Shoemaker, coordinator of Caring Paws.

Small or large, having an animal can actually change the environment of your home. It gives you something to look after, to interact with and to socialize with. Depending on the kind of care your animal of choice needs, it still gives you an overall positive spin on your health. Woof!

Yoga your mind, body and soul

Breathe in deep. Hold it. Exhale slowly. Repeat. Deep breath, hold it and let it out slowly. How do you feel? If your body suddenly seems a little more at ease, then you have just introduced yourself to a trivial part of a calming exercise: yoga.

As we age, our bodies don’t necessarily recover as easily from our day-to-day activities as they used to. Sometimes, without realizing it, we become susceptible to symptoms of aging that we had either hoped to avoid or didn’t see coming. We may slow down, become a little less mobile, and as a result, our bodies suffer more than we think they do.

“As you get older you become more susceptible to the ailments that you get with aging,” says Kelly O’Connell. “And most of the aches and pains that older adults feel are from stiff muscles or week muscles, and yoga addresses both of those.” Not only is it a weight-bearing exercise, O’Connell, from Yoga One, says that this kind of activity helps to increase your ability to balance, which is a commonality in aging.

According to Mary Larsen, “Yoga has been shown to help alleviate or reduce many health challenges, making it an increasingly popular exercise choice for the older adult population.”

There have been many health concerns that have been linked to the sedentary lifestyle. These can include:

• Reduced joint flexibility

• Arthritis/bursitis

• High blood pressure

• Increased body fat and decreased lean body tissue

• Osteoporosis

• Low back pain

• Breathing difficulties

• Poor blood circulation

• Vision problems

• Chronic pain

• Stress-related symptoms

• Inability to sleep peacefully

If you are wary about getting started, and seem intimidated by the different poses that yoga contains, you need not worry. Many facilities offer yoga for beginners and practice the importance of your pattern of breathing. Instructors walk you through many simple steps that can help you improve not only your balance, but also your overall health.

Four Health Signs that could Change Your Life

Many of us are concerned about our health. Whether or not our heart beat maintains a proper rhythm, if our airflow is normal or are we short of breath, is my cough really something more than just the common cold? We have these few signs or symptoms that encourage us to call the doctor in order to have them checked out, maybe get a diagnosis.

Now, according to The Toronto Star, there are four new signs that can help aging adults determine whether or not they are at risk for contracting heart disease or even having a heart attack. These four symptoms include: Earlobe creases, hairline receding at the temples, baldness at the crown of the head and yellow fat deposits around the eyelids.

These findings, presented at the American Heart Association meeting, showed "that patches of fatty bumps around the eyes were the strongest single predictor of cardiovascular illness among the four traits."

At the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, researchers discovered that "people with at least three of these characteristics had a 57 per cent greater risk for a heart attack and a 39 per cent higher chance of heart disease," said The Star.

These recent discoveries are not only stipulated as signs of aging, but that it is aging in an unhealthy manner. Although there are more studies that are expected to delve into the matter, one of the more commonly known risk factors that could cause a heart disease or attack is high cholesterol.

Regardless of our health symptoms, what's important is taking care of them. If you are feeling weary or concerned about something, there is no harm in asking to have it looked at. It's important to ensure that your body is "fully tuned" and in working order.

It’s all in the “Can-do” Attitude

The Little Engine That Could has it right; “I think I can” gets you places. It may be a children’s book that is meant to teach kids the value of optimism and hard work, but it’s a message that can be targeted to all ages.

This can-do attitude resides in 50-year-old Adrienne Lotson, who is running her first marathon race on Sunday. Her motivation stems from the death of her mother a few years earlier, who lived a some-what inactive lifestyle. Lotson told The Wall Street Journal, “While walking during a four-mile race in Central Park last year, [she] was encouraged by a fellow runner to try running the last mile. To her surprise, she pulled it off with ease, and since then has become a 12-minute miler alternating walking with running.”

Lotson used to think marathon runners were “certifiably insane.” But now, she is giving herself the ultimate challenge, all because she changed her mind, decided to amend her lifestyle and believed that she could do it. And it’s not just her who has decided to do so.

The Journal reported on a study, completed by Running USA, that “runners 50 years and older represent one of the fastest-growing age groups participating in the increasingly popular events. As the total number of runners finishing marathons in the U.S. doubled to 518,000 in the 20 years ending 2011, the number of finishers age 50 and older nearly tripled to 92,200.”

So as the population of runners (and their age) increases, growing concern over health issues arise. But the CBC News Health reported that older marathon runners face no greater health risks than younger runners. If you train well and stay hydrated, you should be OK.

According to Alan Culpepper, an Olympic distance runner who specializes in training older marathoners, older bodies generally need more hydration and nutrition, particularly during long runs. "If you're in your 40s or 50s or older, you should be taking in something at every water station, ideally a sports drink if your stomach can handle it," he told The Journal.

If you take care of yourself, and have an attitude that gets you motivated, you can accomplish great things. Just ask 81-year-old Ed Whitlock, he ran the Toronto Marathon earlier this month in three hours and 30 minutes, beating the previous age-81 best by 16 minutes. So where is the harm in trying? Switch it up a little bit and try something new! And for all those who have decided to challenge themselves, we know you can do it, and good luck!

Entering the workforce… Again? Here’s how:

It doesn’t matter what age you are, we all have trouble finding that perfect job. Although, we don’t all face the same challenges. Over the past few months, there has been quite a bit of talk in the workforce about age discrimination around the world and how it can be prevented. It’s intimidating thinking you’ve already been rejected from a new job position due to your wiser years. And yet, shouldn’t that experience be giving you a leg up?

According to Paul Bernard, “You can land a good position after 50 if you know how to overcome the perception during job interviews that you’re too old.” The founder and principal of Paul Bernard & Associates (a life-coaching and career management consulting firm), he recognizes that although individuals in their 50s and 60s have to work harder, getting a new job is still attainable.

And what’s the best way to do this Paul?

“The best way to combat age bias is to make sure interviewers have no doubt that you've got the drive, enthusiasm, dedication and focus of a younger worker as well as valuable skills derived from your years of experience. You’re nimble and have a background that will help an employer save money and avoid making mistakes.”

And if that isn’t enough, Bernard has set out a small guideline of how you can impress a future employer in an interview, and why you would be a great addition to the team:

Prove that experience has taught you when (and when not) to take risks.
Note that you’re an innovator, but not someone who’s constantly looking to reinvent the wheel.
Demonstrate that you’re flexible.
Explain that you’re skilled in social media, but also know that importance of one-on-one connections.
Highlight your collaborative skills, but make sure the interviewer realizes you know how to make tough decisions on your own.
Enthusiastically point out that you embrace change, but also know that change can be difficult.
Finally, create the impression that you’re high-energy and loyal.

Managing Mental Health

This past week was International Mental Illness Awareness week. It’s a time when we reflect on the many different stressors that can affect the healthy functioning of our brain- what can inflict it, how you can manage it, and remembering those who couldn’t. Our brain is a complex part of our body and responsible for how we operate during the day (and night), and the smallest amount of stress that we experience can have the most interesting outcomes.

Take my friend Jayson for example. Without realizing it, he has been stressing about the upcoming week because of the amount of work he has to do. He started organizing his personal space at home until his mom asked him what was bothering him. Although he insisted it was nothing, she told him that ever since he was young, when something bothered him, he would clean his room. When Jayson thought about it, he realized that he found a sense of control over the tasks he had to accomplish once he organized his working atmosphere. His actions mimic that of a metaphor. Once he felt organized, he knew he could move on to bigger projects.

Now, I understand that this isn’t always the case for everyone. Cleaning our workspace doesn’t necessarily mean our stress is going to be alleviated. It can be much bigger than that. This is why it is important to seek out help and talk to someone about the issues that may be affecting your mental health. Because, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, “mental illnesses can take many forms, just as physical illnesses do,” and not everyone knows how to handle it.

Mental illness isn’t limited to one age; it can affect anyone. According to a recent article, Senior suicide: The tricky task of treatment, published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), aging adults are one of the hardest generations to diagnose and treat because, “they have often been taught, or conditioned to keep such problems behind closed doors or disinclined to acknowledge depression or a desire to die.” Essentially, it is hard to get them to break out of the “private-realm” they live in so as not to “risk damage” to their reputation or pride.

Recognizing mental health this month may have only lasted for a week, but it is an ongoing illness. You can’t force an aging adult to talk to you, but you can encourage them to seek advice, offer to help them find someone they could speak with, or let them know that you are always ready and willing to listen. It’s a delicate topic, and nobody wants to admit when they are stuck between a rock and a hard place, not knowing how to get out. But sometimes, a helping hand is all you need to make the first few steps to a healthier and happier you.

If you could pick up a pen, what would you draw? If you could dip a brush into a can of paint, what would your canvas display? If you could grab a pile of clay, what would you mold?

Making something from nothing. That’s the idea of being an artist: the ability to create just about anything, from anything. You possess the freedom of expression, and how you choose to display it is up to you. But it’s not the only way to be creative.

Take 51-year-old Andrew Witten for example. Although he may be considered to be at a stereotypical time in his life where he may be “vulnerable” to experiencing a “mid-life crisis,” Witten walks to the beat of a different drum. What kind of beat you may ask? A creative one.

Although he is a single father, reports The Huffington Post’s article, 1970s NY Graffiti Artists Still Have Urge To Tag, he enjoys delving into an “old” pastime of his: graffiti. And although he admits to The Post that he is “chronologically old to be out there doing it,” his passion has always been “spray-painting extravagant graffiti pieces.” Now, resorting to a black marker in hand, he leaves his signature wherever he gets the opportunity to do so.

It’s a little unorthodox, but what it means is that it doesn’t matter how you go about being creative, what matters is that you find a way to do it. Although we aren’t condoning you to run around the city and mark up the walls… seeing as there could be a penalty to face if you were caught; what matter’s is that you find something that you get a thrill for doing.

The days of youth are not behind you, they are merely waiting for you to start expressing yourself creatively again. Whether it’s changing your look, drawing a picture, seeing the world, or writing something, as long as you are engaged, your message will find a way to get through.

The Many Facets of Dementia

Just when you think there isn’t any more left to say on the topic of dementia, you learn something new. Such as: did you know there is such a thing as an overnight dementia “camp”? You may be as baffled as I was at first when reading about it. But it’s true. Huffington Post’s HuffPost50 reported on The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, where they have a program called ElderServe at Night.

What does this entail you may wonder? It’s a place where aging adults who suffer with dementia can take part in activities, such as arts and crafts, dancing, socializing and more… throughout the night. That’s right, this isn’t a “typical” day-care dementia Centre (although it does offer these services too). It is a program that runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.. It’s for individuals who require constant supervision throughout the night due to fear and confusion that is caused when the sun sets, and it gives caregivers peace of mind that their loved ones are cared for, enabling them to get a restful nights sleep.

Individuals with various types of dementia can have irregular sleep patterns throughout the day, which can cause sudden jolts of alertness at night. The disorientation that occurs in these individuals not only harms their mental capacity to understand what is occurring, but it can cause strain on family caregivers and interruptions to their own sleep cycles.

Like ElderServe at Night, there have been other programs that are unique and cater to individuals who have been affected by dementia, for both the patient and caregiver. Such places, for example, are Alzheimer Cafés becoming more prevalent in society. The concept originates overseas from the Netherlands, took hold across Europe and the United States, and is slowly integrating into Canada. The first of its kind appeared last February in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

These cafés encourage individuals who have Alzheimer’s, or other forms of dementia, to socialize. It’s a space where those who attend, caregiver or patient, can feel comfortable, and where sudden outbursts are accepted due to symptoms of the various types of dementia.

We may not be able to cure dementia, we may only be able to delay its onset, but society certainly understands that we can find ways that help ease the suffering, and find a way to help maintain a person’s dignity.

At 23-years-old, I fight an internal battle and force myself to go for a run. At 102-years-old, Margaret Dunning of Michigan jumps at the opportunity to change the oil on her 1930 Packard 740 Roadster. Torontonian Ida Herbert, 96, rises at 5:30 a.m. every morning to perform her regular routine of yoga poses. Is there a problem with this picture? Yes. I clearly need to readjust my attitude.

Every day we rise to a new occasion, to another day, to another challenge. But this October 1^st brings something new to celebrate: National Seniors Day and International Day of Older Adults. A day for all Canadians to honour, appreciate and celebrate those individuals 65+. The Government of Canada states that the “establishment of National Seniors Day builds on the many concrete measures introduced by the Government to improve the well-being and quality of life of Canada’s seniors.”

To help acknowledge and celebrate this day, CARP, the advocacy association that works to promote and protect the interests, rights and quality of life for Canadians as they age, will be raising their flag at Toronto City Hall.

So, what will you do to commemorate this day? Will you call up your grandmother or reach out to an older, but wiser, family friend? Maybe engage in an activity of your mom or dad’s choosing. Or, celebrate the comfort of knowing you are altogether and reminisce on what times were once like to the way they are today. There is much to be thankful for, and it can be recognized in more ways than one!

Chronicles of Future's Past

Art is a form of expression. It doesn’t matter what form it takes (painting, sculpture, photography, etc.) or the level of expertise an individual has. What’s most important is the feeling that emanates from the design, what the artist wants you to feel.

According to Dale Chihuly, an internationally renowned glass artist and creator of the program ‘Seniors Making Art’, “Anyone can make art as long as one has imagination and life experiences to draw on. Making art is not about craftsmanship, it has to do with feelings and memories.” Does that sound familiar? It’s probably because I already mentioned the importance of expressing emotion through art in a previous post.

The population of aging adults is growing steadily and will be the largest generation by 2030. Staying engaged in every day activity, and with the many world changes is important. It helps build and maintain relationships while preserving a social atmosphere. Engaging in artistic frameworks (whether it’s woodworking, painting, sculpting, or sketching) keeps your mind and body active. Even better, you can participate in the activity with friends.

And we want to help inspire you! The Sheridan Elder Research Centre proudly presents a unique exhibition of Jerry Friedman’s photographs of earth’s oldest people – supercentenarians, individual’s ages 110+. The show, which has been exhibited in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Washington, and Boston, and in New York City at the United Nations, will be held on display at the Sheridan College Gallery in Oakville from September 21 – October 5, 2012. This Sheridan exhibition marks the first time these fascinating photographs have been shown in Canada.

Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

So come out and explore! Bring family and friends to see the beautiful photographs of these supercentenarians that will live on in Friedman’s work.

What defines the word "old"?

Is age really just a number? Do we define our fate? Is our ability to complete a task, any kind of task, all in our head? Are we really our own worst enemy? These questions, along with many more, are being asked every day in our community. We are aging, and we are living longer. And as a result, we are constantly trying to find the answers as to why we are able to, and how we can continue to do so.

When you think of getting older, what do you picture? Finally being able to get your drivers license? Voting? Moving off to college or university? Getting married? Getting that promotion you always wanted? Retiring, then travelling the world? Or, sitting with family and reminiscing about when you were younger? Getting older brings us to events in our lives that wouldn’t necessarily be attainable unless we turned a significant age. And when we do reach that phase that marks our ability to participate in a task we were unable to do so before, we feel a sense of accomplishment. Yes, I did it!

Every second I write this post I am aging, every second you read it you are too. But there are some who are already at a significant age that suddenly has the world on its feet asking, “What are we going to do next?” According to Statistics Canada, “seniors are already the fastest-growing age group in Canada and by 2051, one-quarter of the population will be part of the 65+ club.”

And as a result, The Globe and Mail reports, that many people are starting to answer that question:

“Researchers in engineering and occupational therapy are teaming up to create senior-friendly vehicle designs so older Canadians can safely enjoy the independence of driving later in life. A pathology and molecular medicine expert is studying how eating probiotics can work as a defense against respiratory infections -- a leading cause of death among seniors. A nursing professor is testing the effectiveness of a program that would teach seniors with diabetes how to self-manage their disease.”

Sheridan College is also doing it’s own part by introducing the President’s Creative Challenge 2012-13. This “provides a unique opportunity for Sheridan students, faculty, staff, administrators as well as external business/community representatives to examine this demographic shift through a creative lens.”

Sheridan wants to invite one and all to connect, get involved and propose innovative ideas and solutions to Creative Aging: Designing Communities for all Ages. Sheridan wants you to revolutionize and create, and express what you think will make a “fundamental change in society.” If you are a student, you can submit a project idea. Members of the community can participate by being mentors to these students.

What's Your Must-Have Gadget or Gizmo?

This week is an exciting week for high-tech gadgets, and even more so for older adults. The IFA, which is the leading trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, opened its doors Friday for its annual six-day trade show in Berlin. Companies flocked to show off their latest tech-savvy development. What’s even more impressive? This year, the electronics fair is offering guided tours for the over-60 age group, to show them what’s new and hot for the market of a certain demographic.

According to Eurostat, Berlin had the most inhabitants over the age of 65 in Europe. Along with the latest smart TVs, tablets and high-end coffee-makers, you could find new mobile phones with bigger buttons, robotic vacuum cleaners to make household chores a little easier, and the latest in hearing aid technology, reports Bangkok Post.

With all these new developments, the aging adult will have a wider selection of technological toys to play with that will not only be fun to explore, but can help improve daily tasks. If doctors are starting to turn to the uses of smartphones and tablets to help them help their patients understand a diagnosis or prescription, then shouldn’t technology be developed so that anyone, regardless of age, can use it?

Leana Wen, 29, who is completing her medical residency in emergency medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, say’s that she “finds her smartphone as handy as her stethoscope. Its apps help her quickly figure out proper medicine doses for critically ill patients, or translate medical instructions for Spanish-speakers. That means she doesn't have to wait for a hospital translator to arrive, and she thinks it makes patient care safer,” reports the Calgary Herald.

As the health care industry moves toward the development of applications for phones that help patients monitor their own prescription doses, or set a reminder for when they should take their next pill, development of easy-to-use gizmo's are important, and demand for them is increasing.

The Mysteries of Acupuncture

Knee pain. It can be never-ending or sporadic, but regardless of the condition, it interrupts daily tasks and can prevent you from doing the simplest activity. I, myself, know firsthand how knee pain can interfere with your day. But where does it come from?

According to William C. Shiel Jr., a doctor in the field of rheumatology, he describes knee pain as a symptom that occurs from athletic activities, trauma injuries and aging. The complexity of the design of the knee, and the fact that it is an active weight-bearing joint, are factors in making the knee one of the most commonly injured joints, Shiel writes in his article Knee Pain. Of the number of different diagnoses that can be made, Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder, which is due to aging and wear and tear on a joint.

Knee osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage (or menisci), which provides “cushion” between the bones, wears away, causing pain and stiffness, reports The Huffington Post. The condition affects one in two people by the time they are 85 and is often treated with drugs, therapy and sometimes surgery. According to a new study, however, acupuncture could be a viable option to relieve symptoms as well.

Published in the journal of Acupuncture in Medicine, the study consisted of 90 older adults, with an average age of 71, who had osteoarthritis. Each participant’s diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis was the same: they were viable to have surgery as an option for correcting the situation.

The study consisted of having all the individuals receive weekly acupuncture treatments for one month, and then once every six weeks from that time forward. However, not all the participants received treatment for the same amount of time. After a year had gone by, 41 of them continued to receive it and by the time two years had passed, it decreased to 31. Regardless, what British researchers found was that consistent acupuncture, after one month, appeared to decrease pain and stiffness that comes with osteoarthritis.

So, what causes this healing affect to occur? Experts still aren’t entirely sure, writes The Post. According to Theories on the Effects of Acupuncture on the Nervous System, although no singular theory has been successful in entirely proving or discovering the intrinsic significance of acupuncture on the nervous system, it is generally accepted that the effects of acupuncture on the body involves the release of opioid peptides in the body.

Opioid peptides? That’s a mouth full! Opioid peptides are thought to be closely involved with the perception of pain in the central nervous system. They are comprised of endorphins, enkephallins and dynorphins, types of neurotransmitters that are found in neurons throughout the body. So with all this medical jibber-jabber, what does this actually mean? The theory is as follows:

“Pain is felt when the nervous system gets trapped in a kind of negative feedback loop. This can occur when either the brain hasn't registered the pain because the input to the nervous system isn't sufficient to reach the absolute threshold to release endorphins; or, the pain originates at a different source than where the body actually perceives the pain. In the later case, although endorphins have been released to one area, the root cause of the pain remains damaged and continues to cause pain even after the body has presumably taken care of the problem. Acupuncture triggers the release of opioid's in the nervous system by drawing attention to the problem area, either directly or indirectly. After the afflicted area can move and operate freely without the hindrance of pain and the pattern in the nervous system that was creating the pain is broken, often the area will proceed to heal naturally.”

I have had acupuncture a few times to help with some athletic injuries, and it worked wonders on me by reducing the pain and inflammation in my knee and ankle. It may be unknown as to what the procedure triggers exactly in your body to help stave off pain, but it is a well-practiced therapy that continues to be studied. Google Something... Anything

If you haven’t already heard it before, I will kindly remind you once again, using the Internet benefits your brain for the long haul. It’s actually been said that doing an Internet search stimulates aging brains even more than reading a book. Just ask Jean Carper, award-winning medical journalist and the author of 100 Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer’s.

Carper’s research lead her to Gary Small, MD, director of the UCLA Center on Aging, who said, “Internet searching engages complicated brain activity, which may help exercise and improve brain function.” See? I told you so. Small, using MRI scans, measured the intensity of activity in the brains of middle-aged and older adults while they searched something on the Internet.

He discovered that activity picks up dramatically in the brains of experienced surfers – mainly in regions related to decision-making and complex reasoning, which are not stimulated simply by reading. And, as an added bonus, the MRIs showed that the more frequent Internet user had twice as much brain activity than beginners.

What’s even more jaw dropping? “Small found that people ages 55 to 78 who rarely used the Internet previously were able to trigger these key centers in the brain after only one week of surfing the Web for an hour each day.” One reason as to why perusing the Web may be so beneficial, is because of the multiple decisions you are forced to make with the click of your mouse to get to the root of the information you are looking for. With this constant decision making process, we engage important cognitive circuits in our brain, giving ourselves a mental workout!

Mental exercise, like physical exercise, appears to strengthen your brain’s resistance to mental decline and Alzheimer’s, writes Carper. And our world is full of technology that encourages us to do this without realizing it because it’s fun, engaging and you can challenge yourself without breaking a sweat!

A great way to stimulate your brain is to play quick “brain games” that can be found online, such as Posit Science. Here, they offer the 60-Second Brain Game, the Brain Speed Test, the Word List Recall and more. Posit Science not only offers a Total Training Package, but also offers Brain Training products that focus on enhancing different parts of your brain, such as auditory or visual.

Cocoa: Enriching Lives

Who knew that the sweet ingredient we find in chocolate is the same element that may also be good for cognitive function in the aging adult. Cocoa, that sweet, delicious piece that completes chocolate recipes, is currently being recognized as a source that could improve cognitive function for individuals with early memory decline.

According to a study conducted by Giovambattista Desideri of the University of L’Aquila in Italy and colleagues, and funded by Mars, Incorporated, researchers reported that elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who consumed high or moderate levels of dietary cocoa flavanols for two months had significant improvements on certain cognitive assessment tests, reports medpage Today.

Flavanols are a group of natural compounds that are found abundant in cocoa. Previous studies have suggested that eating flavanols presents cardiovascular benefits. Catherine Kwik-Uribe, a study author and R&D Director at Mars Botanical, said, “The results of this latest research build on these earlier findings and provide promising indication that diets that contain cocoa flavanols may offer significant benefits as we age.”

It’s been estimated that up to 20 per cent of adults aged 65 or older have a form of mild cognitive impairment, and recent evidence indicates that more than six per cent of adults aged 70-89 develop the condition each year, reports Mars, Inc.

Desideri and colleagues assessed 90 older adults with MCI who were randomized to drink varying levels – high, intermediate and low – of a dairy-based cocoa per day for 8 weeks. The research team assessed the varying levels of cognitive function using standard tests that examined various aspects of memory, cognitive processing speed, executive function, as well as global cognition.

As a result, they found that tests that examined the processing speed, working memory and executive function were significantly improved after two months of regular consumption. Test times completed by the participants after the eight-week study were reduced up to 30 per cent. In addition, scores on the Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), which is commonly used as a measure of executive function and language, were also significantly better.

These findings, recently published in the online journal Hypertension, have stressed that due to the short-term duration of these studies, this has not yet been proven to be a consistent cognitive benefit, but shows (positive) signs as to the effects dietary cocoa flavanols can have with daily intake.

While researchers continue their studies on cocoa, it can’t hurt to get a jump on your flavanol intake. We aren’t suggesting you run around going on a chocolate binge, because that isn’t healthy. But flavanols can also be found in tea, apples and grapes, and indulging in any of these three products once a day can’t hurt. At least now I’m not feeling so bad about that brownie I ate at lunch…

Solve Retirement Conundrums: Ask Questions

The other night, I sat at the dinner table with family and friends of all ages. As the night wore on, light-hearted topics became serious discussions, and one stood out like a sore thumb. After we all agreed how nice it was to share the night with such good company, the table suddenly fell silent as Carol (name changed for privacy), in her 80s, piped up and said, “Yes, it’s a nice change because it’s lonely living by yourself… but I’m not ready to move into a retirement home.”

It’s been two years since Carol’s husband passed away. Her children visit her frequently, and try to include her in as many family activities as possible. Blessed with a great-grandchild a year ago, her social circles have expanded a little, but not to a great extent. As we sat around the table, a little stunned at the comment, Carol’s daughter-in-law gently pointed out that there is no rush to move into a retirement home, but should the day come that she is ready, they offer a lot more social gatherings than many people think.

Carol agreed wholeheartedly with her daughter-in-law, admitting that retirement homes probably offer a great deal, but expressed concern over being ‘put’ into the ‘wrong’ kind of home, or not liking the place she might end up. As I sat there listening and watching Carol’s reaction, I began to wonder how many other individuals are confronted with these conflicting emotions? When is it considered the “right” time to move into an age-segregated community? Who would benefit from it and who wouldn’t?

Well, no sooner had I started asking these questions myself, I then stumbled upon a Huffington Post article, Retirement Communities: The 7 Things You Should Ask. According to the Post, “the idea that if you’ve seen one retirement community, you’ve seen them all is far from the truth.” And this is true! One of our recent posts, What’s your niche?, focused on the development of many different kinds of retirement homes that cater to individual interests. Therefore, becoming engaged in the social atmosphere is easier when you know that the majority of the residents living in a “themed” retirement community share the same interests.

So, where to start? SERC wants to encourage you to explore your options and really make sure that you understand them. Instead of assuming the worst in retirement communities, its best to understand what they have to offer and how you can find the most rewarding experience that fits you. Retirement isn’t the end, only a new beginning.

Some retirement communities have lowered the age-admission bar to 50. But therein lies the rub: Just because they let 50-year-olds in, doesn't mean everyone who lives there is 50. Do you really want to be the only 50 year old in a community where most people are in their 80s?

A retirement community can be a little evasive when you ask about the age of residents, in part because it's constantly changing. The average age of residents tends to rise as the community matures, so while the average age of new buyers might be on the young side, you want to be sure you know the average age of all the residents who live there. It's an important distinction. One surefire way to evaluate who your neighbors will be is to check out who the recreational programs cater to. Is it heavy with clubs for marathoners, tennis players and Pilates classes? Or is loaded with offerings like knitting, Mahjong and bridge?

2. Is it a place where you’ll find friends “with the same major”?

People come to a retirement community expecting to find a built-in circle of friends with similar interests. It's flawed thinking. Just because two people are the same age doesn't mean they like the same things.

The solution is to find people "with the same major" -- people interested in the same things as you are. This thinking has fueled what is known as affinity retirement communities -- places developed around a specific interest. There are some retirement communities for artists -- like California's Burbank Senior Artists Colony, a rental community with opportunities to engage in visual arts, theater and writing. Or a place based around a specific occupation, like Nalcrest, a community about 70 miles east of Tampa, Florida for retired mail carriers where, no surprise here, no dogs are allowed.

3. Are you looking for love in all the wrong places?

For many, retirement community living starts to look more appealing when they find themselves spouse-less. Whether it be through death or divorce, the prospect of flying solo after decades of having a partner is often what drives people to consider living in an age-restricted community. But the odds of winning the remarriage jackpot are probably better in Vegas than in a retirement village. Experts suggest that if marriage is your goal, you should stay active, pursue your own interests and look beyond the retirement gates for a date.

4. Will you grow old or stay young here?

Studies have shown that active people are happier and healthier. With this in mind, you will want to pick a retirement community that keeps you engaged. One thing to consider is a community in or near a college. Colleges and universities frequently let seniors audit classes for free. College campuses also have many free and low-cost cultural offerings -- concerts, art shows, visiting authors. Retirement communities tend to be built out in deserts or on the outskirts of town where land is cheaper. It may be worth paying a premium for locations closer to the things that will keep you happiest -- and that includes being near old friends and family.

5. Will your children and grandchildren feel welcome?

While some retirement communities have swing sets and little playgrounds for visiting grandkids, others cap the number of days that minors can spend the night. The idea is that they don't want under-aged residents moving in on a permanent basis. This kind of policy may feel draconian to those who cherish every hour with their grandkids and want the little ones over as much as possible. It also might preclude your adult kids from returning to the nest if they can't find jobs. It's best to check the community's policy about visitors who are younger than the minimum age requirement and make sure you are in agreement before you commit to living there.

6. Is the bottom line the bottom line?

Retirement is all about living on a fixed income, right? You know what's coming in each month and it's important to know what's going out. Make sure you know what's included in your monthly homeowners association dues. While "use of the clubhouse" may be included, morning yoga classes may be extra. Front Porch, one of California's largest not-for-profit providers of senior living communities, lists this as one of the top questions to ask. The devil is in the details, after all.

7. Are you planning for today and ignoring tomorrow?

While your immediate concern may be whether you will be able to maintain an active lifestyle, some thought needs to be given to whether this is a home in which you can age in place. Front Porch suggests prospective residents ask: Will I be able to get around to appointments and run your errands if I can no longer drive? What kind of emergency response systems do you have? While it's hard to envision looking that far down the road, it gets back to the not-trusting-anyone-older-than-30 idea: The day will come sooner than you expect when you might appreciate a community bus to the supermarket or a dining room in which to take your meals.

Exercise. Ex-er-cise. Ex-errrr-ciiisssee. Out of breath yet? Sometimes, just thinking about being active is mentally exhausting. Why? Because follow-up questions tend to trail behind the statement, “I think I should do some exercise.” But what will you do? Drive to the gym and jump on the elliptical? Brush the dust off of the treadmill in your basement and hope that it still starts up? Maybe search for a personal trainer? We try to think of all these “extreme” measures that we believe will get us to our peak physical condition. But in reality, it’s the simplest tasks that can benefit our health the most.

And what would that be, you may wonder? Walking. What could help motivate you? A pedometer.

Yes, a pedometer. According to a new study that was completed by Gregory Kolt, head of the School of Science and Health at the University of Western Sydney in Penrith, Australia, 300 New Zealand seniors found that weekly walking times nearly doubled when they wore the devices, reports Florida Today.

The study tracked the walking rates for over a year of relatively non-active people aged 65 or older. Randomly separated into two groups, one received the pedometers to track their step-by-step movements, while the other did not. They were then asked to follow New Zealand’s “Green Prescription” for physical activity – an initiative aimed at getting people to engage of at least 30 minutes of moderate activity a day.

As a result, researchers found that those who wore the devices almost doubled their average weekly workout time, about 50 minutes per week, while older adults who were without remained at an average of 28 minutes. As a bonus, both groups experienced significant improvements in their blood pressure.

So why would the pedometers help to increase their activity levels? Well, according to Kolt, “wearing the device allows users to see how much physical activity they are accumulating through their general daily routines, upping the odds that they will stay with the routine.” And the best part is that pedometer’s are affordable devices that can easily be obtained.

So, I dare you to take the challenge. See how far you can go in a day, and then push yourself to walk further than you did the day before. All you can do is benefit from it and improve your quality of life. It’s a win-win situation.
