Divided Natures: French Contributions to Political Ecology

In this book Kerry Whiteside introduces the work of a range of French ecological theorists to an English-speaking audience. He shows how thinkers in France and in English-speaking countries have produced different strains of ecological thought and suggests that the work of French ecological theorists could lessen pervasive tensions in Anglophone ecology.Much of the theory written in English is shaped by the debate between anthropocentric ecologists, who contend that the value of our nonhuman surroundings derives from their role in fulfilling human interests, and ecocentric ecologists, who contend that the nonhuman world holds ultimate value in and of itself. This debate is almost nonexistent among French theorists, who tend to focus on the processes linking nature and human identity. Whiteside suggests that the insights of French theorists could help English-language theorists to extricate themselves from endless debates over the real center of nature’s value.Among the French theorists discussed are Denis de Rougemont, Denis Duclos, René Dumont, Luc Ferry, André Gorz, Félix Guattari, Bruno Latour, Alain Lipietz, Edgar Morin, Serge Moscovici, and Michel Serres. The English-language theorists discussed include John Barry, Robyn Eckersley, Robert Goodin, Tim Hayward, Holmes Rolston III, and Paul Taylor.

The Venus Project-Resource Based Economy

The term and meaning of a Resource-Based Economy was originated by Jacque Fresco. It is a holistic social and economic system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude. All resources become the common heritage of all of the inhabitants, not just a select few. The premise upon which this system is based is that the Earth is abundant with plentiful resource; our practice of rationing resources through monetary methods is irrelevant and counter productive to our survival. Modern society has access to highly advanced technology and can make available food, clothing, housing and medical care; update our educational system; and develop a limitless supply of renewable, non-contaminating energy. By supplying an efficiently designed economy, everyone can enjoy a very high standard of living with all of the amenities of a high technological society. A resource-based economy would utilize existing resources from the land and sea, physical equipment, industrial plants, etc. to enhance the lives of the total population. In an economy based on resources rather than money, we could easily produce all of the necessities of life and provide a high standard of living for all.

Palo Alto Landscape Design Contractor Green Thumbs Up, Shares Advice on Organic, Sustainable Gardening

Palo Alto Landscape Design Contractor Green Thumbs Up, Shares Advice on Organic, Sustainable Gardening

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 03, 2012

A sustainable garden works in harmony with nature. These gardens are low-water, organic, chemical-free, and support environmental conservation.

“Sustainable gardens are the trend right now,” says CEO of Green Thumbs Up, Fanny Obadia. Trained in horticulture and landscape design and specializing in organic, low-water, sustainable gardens, she adds that most techniques are easy and can save homeowners both time and money.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

    1. Plant native plants and trees which need less care and energy and will be healthier than exotic species. Another benefit is that native birds, insects, and other wildlife will be able to use the fruits, nectar, and habitat these plants and trees provide.

    2. Organic gardening is a great way to grow fruit and vegetables. This method allows homeowners to grow food without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals that pollute the soil and water. An array of tools is available to bolster plant health and ward off pests, including using beneficial insects such as lady bugs, organic fertilizers, and compost to supply the soil with nutrients.

    3. Mulching protects the soil by helping it retain water, control weeds, and insulate plants from extreme temperatures. Materials such as wood chips, nut shells, grass clippings, compost, sawdust, or leaves can be used as mulch. Mulching is a great way to recycle materials that might otherwise be discarded.

For those with a busy lifestyle who want an organic, sustainable garden but do not have the time or expertise, professionals are available to install and maintain an organic garden.

Green Thumbs Up, a licensed landscape contractor with a horticulture background, can help homeowners re-create an outdoor space, add new paths, or build raised beds for fruits and vegetables. They are a one-stop shop, providing landscape design, installation, and maintenance with experience in many design styles, including contemporary, modern, English, Japanese, as well as landscape designs for Eichler homes. This is a company that gives back to the community as well, including sharing profits with Heifer International, a non-profit world hunger organization.

“It’s very important to me to build good relationships with our clients” says Fanny, who has a hands-on approach from conception to completion and speaks English, Spanish, and French fluently. “I take the time to listen and ask relevant questions about their lifestyle and gardening needs. I like to meet all the family members and incorporate what they want in the yard.”

The Art of War – Sunzi – Sun Tzu – Sun Wu – Military Strategy – Free Full Audiobook

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise that is attributed to Sun Tzu (also referred to as “Sunzi” and “Sun Wu”), a high ranking military general and strategist during the late Spring and Autumn period (some scholars believe that the Art of War was not completed until the subsequent Warring States period[1]). Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it is said to be the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time, and is still read for its military insights. The Art of War is one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy in the world. It has been the most famous and influential of China’s Seven Military Classics: “for the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name.”[2] It has had an influence on Eastern military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu emphasized the importance of positioning in military strategy, and that the decision to position an army must be based on both objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective beliefs of other, competitive actors in that environment. He thought that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through an established list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a changing environment, competing

Connected Waters is a UNSW initiative investigating and raising awareness of Australia’s water resources and water resource issues, including groundwater, rivers, irrigation, wetlands and salinity. For more information visit the Connected Waters website @ www.connectedwaters.unsw.edu.au. In 2007, the Water Research Laboratory undertook a commercial project investigating the feasibility of using managed aquifer recharge (MAR) to manage local stormwater at a South Sydney site. As part of the project, a number of piezometers were installed into the aquifer across the site using a drill rig. The piezometers and drilling investigations were used to undertake water quality testing and characterise the aquifer. This footage shows the drilling process and installation of a piezometer.

The Girl Who Silenced the World for 6 Minutes( Video and audio restoration )

This is an incredible video of a Canadian girl who spoke to the United Nations and left them completely silent and speechless for six minutes. Her name is Severn Cullis-Suzuki, and her speech was given at a UN assembly in Brazil when she was twelve years old. She had raised all the money to travel to the delegation, five thousand miles from her home, herself. Biography Severn Cullis-Suzuki was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. Her mother is writer Tara Elizabeth Cullis. Her father, geneticist and environmental activist David Suzuki, is a third-generation Japanese Canadian. While attending Lord Tennyson Elementary School in French Immersion, at age 9, she founded the Environmental Children’s Organization (ECO), a group of children dedicated to learning and teaching other youngsters about environmental issues. In 1992, at age 12, Cullis-Suzuki raised money with members of ECO, to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Along with group members Michelle Quigg, Vanessa Suttil, and Morgan Geisler, Cullis-Suzuki presented environmental issues from a youth perspective at the summit, where she was applauded for a speech to the delegates. The video has since become a viral hit, popularly known as “The Girl Who Silenced the World for 6 Minutes”. In 1993, she was honoured in the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global 500 Roll of Honour.[7] In 1993, Doubleday published her book Tell the World , a 32-page book of environmental steps for families. Cullis-Suzuki graduated

This was an assignment given by our French cinema professor at California State University, Long Beach to try and re-create a film Godardian style. In this my group attempts an uncomfortable satiric film to address how, in American Society, such environmental issues become apparent, but most individuals live indifferently only because they live as an individual doing as they please in a free country, taking for granted their freedoms. The main purpose of our film is to criticize how some groups of environmentalists go too far in exercising their values of saving the planet. Each character is shown as trying to recycle and save the environment, but blocking traffic in the process, causing even more pollution. It stresses the absurdity of this aspect of American society, which mirrors the themes present in Godard’s films that criticize French society. Basically it all boils down to the idea that all societies are flawed, with our short film taking a look at American society specifically. Our film was inspired by Godard’s classic traffic scene in “Le Week-End.” Hope you enjoy :)

Fiona Harvey on International Climate Change Negotiations Post-Copenhagen

Perspectives from France and the UK About the Event: Copenhagen for some did not live up to expectations, for others it achieved all that could reasonably be expected. One thing is sure: the Copenhagen Accord has introduced a great deal of uncertainty into international climate negotiations. Many, from politicians, academics, investors and environmentalists are trying to figure out what will happen next. Our two speakers, both close observers of international negotiations, will offer contrasting perspectives on the outcome of the conference and future direction of international negotiations on the path to Mexico in December 2010. Mr. Lalonde will take a French and an individual perspective on international climate change negotiations and will consider the outcomes from Copenhagen, the likely consequences, identifying measures which need to be taken in light of the conference. Fiona Harvey will explain why, from her perspective, the widespread coverage of Copenhagen calling it a failure was mistaken, and argues that actually the summit achieved most of what it was meant to. About the Speakers: Brice Lalonde is chair of the Sustainable Development Roundtable for the OECD, and is the former French Minister for the Environment (1988 to 1992). Mr. Lalonde now also serves as a senior advisor for state environment agencies, as well as consulting to major companies and local governments in the fields of environment, energy, and development. Tuna Time

The Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is a species of tuna in the Scombridae family. It is variously known as the Atlantic bluefin tuna, giant bluefin tuna (for individuals exceeding 150 kilograms or around 330 pounds) and formerly as the tunny. Atlantic bluefin are native to both the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. Atlantic bluefin have become extinct in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. The Atlantic bluefin tuna is a close relative of the other two bluefin tuna species—the Pacific bluefin tuna and the southern bluefin tuna. Atlantic bluefin tuna are capable of reaching well over 450 kilograms (992 lb) in weight, and rival the black marlin and blue marlin as the largest Perciformes. Throughout recorded history, the Atlantic bluefin tuna has been highly prized as a food fish. Bluefin have been a valuable commercial catch from the time of the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians to the modern era. Besides their commercial value as food, their great size and the speed and power they display as apex predators has attracted the admiration and respect of both ancient and modern fishermen, as well as writers, sport anglers and scientists. The Atlantic bluefin tuna has been the foundation of one of the world’s most lucrative commercial fisheries. Medium-sized and large individuals are heavily targeted for the Japanese raw fish market, where all bluefin species are highly prized for sushi and sashimi. This commercial importance has led to severe
