With Regis on the future of Electric Sheep in Second Life

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Thu, 17 Apr 2008 11:45:00 +0000

Today I had a short chat with Regis Braathens - the Editor in Chief of the AvaStar, whom I dare to call my friend. As always, he was in a hurry, but we managed to discuss (a bit) the possible backoff of The Electric Sheep Company from the Second Life. To tell the truth I was not surprized with that news at all. It was a public secret that ES was firing instead of hiring for some time now. In my opinion ES is simply too BIG, too EXPENSIVE and too STATIC for Second Life, if you get my meaning right. In fact, soon after it's creation it bacame more an electric elephant than an electric sheep :)
I hope the change is for better :)

The eLab City progress slowed down by Linden Lab asset server issues

The above pictures show the latest progress made in eLab City. The research and office part of eLab is nearly ready. Next we will move with the development process towards the residential area of the city. Much of it (Alcatraz Club and eLab Gardens) are already there. Same applies to the main shape of the eLab Gallery Mall and Plaza. Unfortunately the latest issues with Linden Lab asset servers make this process much slower than we expected. We hope all the bugs and problems will be removed soon by the Lindens.

More News about eLab City under development by aHead

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Fri, 08 Feb 2008 08:29:00 +0000

The scientific offices of the eLab City - designed by Cezary Fish

UC Riverside’s eLab City development in Second Life allows people to be someone else in another world while researchers study consumer behavior. In the first half of 2008, consumers can make a new life for themselves in an online community offered through eLab City at UCR’s Sloan Center.

“A number of reasons exist for the popularity of Second Life environments,” said Thomas Novak, Albert O. Steffey professor of marketing at UCR’s A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management and co-founder of the Sloan Center for Internet Retailing. “While there is an element of escape to virtual worlds, there are also very positive motivations like the desire for a creative outlet and for new forms of social interaction.”

Most academic simulations in Second Life are “virtual campuses” oriented to classroom instruction and course support. There are, however, no academic Second Life projects devoted to studying how consumers behave in virtual worlds. eLab City will be a platform for the academic study of virtual consumption. Modeled as a “live-work-play” community, eLab City will provide a working laboratory and subject pool for academic research.

Pre-built residential apartments will be provided – primarily to students - for fixed periods of time at no charge with larger units for management. eLab City will also virtually house a consumer lab, office space, library, conference rooms, survey space, resident-run shops, a cinema, concert stage, and an exhibition hall for art, design and fashion shows. The opening show at eLab City’s exhibition hall in Spring 2008, “Virtual Virtual,” will feature original work by noted digital artist Peter Stanick. eLab City itself is being developed for the UCR Sloan Center by the team of visual artist and composer Cezary Ostrowski aka Cezary Fish (aHead agency, Poland) and film editor Nadia Hennrich.

As an academic research facility and platform, eLab City combines a panel of Second Life users, survey and experimental research capabilities, and tools for unobtrusively tracking user behavior given informed consent.

“It’s a working laboratory and a subject pool for academic research,” Novak said.

The UCR Sloan Center is currently collaborating with the London office of GMI (Global Market Insite, Inc.), a provider of global market intelligence solutions, to develop eLab City’s online academic panel of Second Life residents. A second project conducted in collaboration with GMI uses automated “survey bots” to approach and interview Second Life residents.

Through the UCR Sloan Center, eLab City will provide a vehicle for companies to sponsor cutting edge academic research. Similar to the early years of the commercial Web in the mid 1990s, companies today are struggling to understand how virtual worlds will play out in the coming years. eLab City hopes to offer some answers.

The list of areas of study is almost as immense as the possibilities for the players. Novak hopes to study peer/social influence, decision making, virtual consumption, group behavior, merchandizing, branding, research methodology and social capital among others.

“True physical attractiveness and social skills don’t impact first impressions online, but what about virtual attractiveness and social skills? This is one aspect of research we will be studying,” Novak said.

Although Second Life is sometimes referred to as a game, Second Life does not fit the standard definition. It does not have points, scores, winners or losers, levels, an end-strategy, or most of the other characteristics of games, though it can be thought of as a game on a more basic level because it is played for fun.

Novak said that Second Life provides an excellent platform for study because it’s the most socially and economically complex virtual world environment to date.

P.S. aHead CEO Cezary Fish wishes to thank Nadia Hennrich for her great input during the planning part of the project.

NASA inspired by Second Life?

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Wed, 06 Feb 2008 10:15:00 +0000

Soyuz Mission by aHead CEO - Cezary Fish
(Soyuz also exposed in The International Spaceflight Museum - Second Life)

The NASA Learning Technologies (LT) Project Office supports projects that deliver NASA relevant content through innovative applications of technologies to enhance education in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Research and development in each of the STEM areas are at the core of the LT mission. LT seeks to enhance formal and informal education in STEM fields with the goal of increasing the number of students in those fields of study. The LT is currently evaluating the development of a NASA-based massively multiplayer online educational game (MMO).

Persistent immersive synthetic environments in the form of massive multiplayer online gaming and social virtual worlds, initially popularized as gaming and social settings, are now finding growing interest as education and training venues. There is increasing recognition that these synthetic environments can serve as powerful “hands-on” tools for teaching a range of complex subjects, including STEM-based instruction. Virtual worlds with scientifically accurate simulations could permit learners to tinker with chemical reactions in living cells, practice operating and repairing expensive equipment, and experience microgravity – making it easier to grasp complex concepts and quickly transfer this understanding to practical problems. MMOs help players develop and exercise a skill set closely matching the thinking, planning, learning, and technical skills increasingly in demand by employers today. These skills include strategic thinking, interpretative analysis, problem solving, plan formulation and execution, team-building and collaboration, and adaptation to rapid change.

The power of games as educational tools is rapidly gaining recognition. NASA is in a position to develop an online game that functions as a persistent, synthetic environment supporting education as a laboratory, a massive visualization tool, and collaborative workspace while simultaneously drawing users into a challenging, game-play experience.

The SL Grand Orchestra of Christmas Charity result - 768 544 L$ - we did it together!

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Tue, 15 Jan 2008 12:34:00 +0000

Lights to the Sky at Slang Life island.

It was a hudge effort of all people of good will. We managed to collect 768 544 L$ alltogether for the sick children in Poland. Following are the results from the top three Islands:

Polska (Centrum Polska / Cooler Club) - 190 262 L$
SlangLife - 180 312 L$
Polskie Radio - 117 777 L$

But I would like to underline that the whole Polish community was engaged in this venture, so I wish to thank every single avatar that contributed to our success. In SlangLife we had many great sponsors and contributors from all over the world as well. One of the well known SL investors contributed his daily income in Second Life to help the kids. I do not mention anyone by name here, because it was not about names, it was about kids. Many great SL musicians, performers, designers did their best to help us. I am extremely happy that I had a chance to be a part of this great undertaking.

The Grand Orchestra still plays in our hearts. Let it play forever... and a day longer!

Cezary Fish visiting De Lodi Island

Anna Noonan: What made you become a Second Life resident?
Cezary Fish: It was love from the first log. With a major pragmatic aspect, because I immediatelly felt the marketing and developing abilities of Second Life. It is a third year now I am a resident.

What fascinates you in Second Life?
The multitude of possibilities, interactivity, the human factor. New marketing and PR techniques available.

What do you actually do in SL?
Am I a developer - content provider. My firm - aHead is listed by Linden Lab as a first Polish full service agency, helping the real life companies to enter SL. My firm envisions the inevitable transformation of web into web 2.0 - which also applies to interactive, user created metaverses, such as SL. New forms of marketing, cooperation, comunication, education, simualtion, entertainment are emerging already, and they do it fast.

Wyspa Slang Life - Wielkie Otwarcie w Second Life

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Sun, 02 Dec 2007 11:20:00 +0000

Pierwszego Grudnia, dokładnie o północy, dokonaliśmy oficjalnego otwarcia wyspy SlangLife. Wyspa jest główną siedzibą Slang Life Magazine, pierwszego magazynu o Second Life , który będzie drukowany w Prawdziwym Życiu i dostarczany DARMOWO do domów subskrybentów na całym świecie z pomocą poczty.

W styczniu 2008 firma Slang Corp. wyda pierwszy numer magazynu Slang Life poświęconego wirtualnej rzeczywistości Second Life. Magazyn będzie wydawany w języku angielskim, najbardziej popularnym w Second Life. Każdy zainteresowany awatar może otrzymać go pocztą w Prawdziwym Życiu. Spodziewany nakład to 80.000 egzemplarzy.

Niech Żyje Second Life - Niech Żyje Slang Life! Spodziewajcie się pierwszego egzemplarza na początku stycznia. Nie zapomnijcie o subskrypcji! Wystarczy odwiedzić SlangLife Island w SL.
Tam można jej dokonać - bezpłatnie!

Slang Life Island - The Grand Opening in Second Life

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Sun, 02 Dec 2007 11:01:00 +0000

On the first of December, exactly at midnight, we officially opened The SlangLife Island. It is a headquarter for Slang Life Magazine, the first ever magazine about Second Life to be printed in Real Life and delivered to all the subscribers' homes absolutely FREE of charge.

In January 2008 the Slang Corp. company starts publishing a new global magazine Slang Life devoted to the virtual reality of the Second Life. The magazine will be published in English, the most popular language in the Second Life. Every number of Slang Life will contain information about the most important and interesting events from such domains as politics, tourism, fashion and entertainment. The free, A4-size, 48-page-long monthly will be distributed only among the subscribers. Each avatar interested in the magazine will receive it through the post at home in the real life. Expected edition is 80.000 copies.

Following are a few pictures from the opening which consisted of official speaches (short ones:), a fashion show by Soraya Blachere and a totally weird party!

1. This is how we started the show at the Grand Plaza of the Slang City

2. The officials decided not to use the stage. They made their speaches standing among the guests, which was really nice.

3. The fashion show by american (german? :) designer Soraya Blachere was a fantastic intermezzo.

4. Very late at night (for the European standards) we started to party. The party lasted till dawn!!!
Long Live Second Life - Long Live Slang Life! Expect the first issue at you door in the beginning of January. Do not forget to subscribe! Vistit SlangLife Island in SL.

eLab City aHead :) - the study of virtual consumption

noreply@blogger.com (Ostrowski) — Sat, 24 Nov 2007 21:03:00 +0000

eLab City will be a live-work-play community in Second Life for the study of virtual consumption. Development will begin by the end of 2007 (hopefully in November!), and the two-island sim should open in first quarter 2008.

A concept description and plan/map can be found at: http://elabcity.com . eLab City will serve as a platform for academic research on consumer behavior in virtual worlds conducted by UCR Sloan Center for Internet Retailing faculty and affiliates (see http://sloan.ucr.edu). eLab City will be developing a resident community, a Second Life panel, and mechanisms for collecting survey, observational, and experimental data.

The whole thing is a project of Tom Novak - Albert O. Steffey Professor of Marketing, Cooperating Faculty in Psychology, and Co-Director of the Sloan Center for Internet Retailing at the University of California, Riverside, where he joined the faculty in July 2006. Novak’s research since 1993 has focused exclusively on Internet and Web based commerce. His current research areas include virtual worlds, measuring the online consumer experience, online advertising, Web advertising metrics and modeling online advertising exposure, Internet marketing strategy, and electronic commerce policy.

We are proud to announce that aHead agency has been chosen to develop this one!
