Nonprof-IT Milestone

With the completion of this fall’s Nonprof-IT projects the important milestone of 100 nonprofits served has been reached! Although progress has been slowed this fall due to the program switching to a virtual experience we were still able to assist 4 very deserving Milwaukee area nonprofits.

UpEd Consulting

Excited to announce the launch of UpEd Consulting. This is a new consulting venture that I am happy to be a part of. UpEd seeks to give universities the tools to make student’s educational experience more flexible. We offer experience in areas such as competency based education, experiential learning, transfer and equivalency credits, and prior learning assessment. Together with my partners we have a combined 40+ years of experience in higher education administration, program building, instruction, and building partnerships.

Higher education has been disrupted abruptly by covid-19 and we aim to deliver solutions in this age of uncertainty. Watch for more in the months and year to come!

Hera Launch

Great to be at the HERA launch yesterday to see the leaders of the Milwaukee region’s educational institutions collaborate on addressing the education and skills gap in the region. Hopefully the momentum started yesterday can lead to improvements in education outcomes that will benefit the quality of life of everyone who lives and works in the region. Students, nonprofits, and mentors

Congratulations to the students and nonprofits for another successful semester. This photo keeps getting bigger! Nine nonprofits received free IT assistance in the fall while 36 students gained valuable internship experience for course credit.

Nonprof-IT Business Visits

Student teams working with Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful and Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative

Toward the end of each semester students in the Nonprof-IT program have the opportunity to present their work for their nonprofit at local business’s. The students above spent the morning visiting the new Northwestern Mutual headquarters to present their work, hear a presentation from the innovation arm of the company, and get a tour of the facility. Both student teams worked mainly on re-designing outdated websites for the nonprofits.

Label Tags and Usability

Occasionally when working with nonprofits the topic of usability will come up in regards to the website. Usability is something that should be at the forefront of designer’s minds when building applications. There are a number of great resources on the topic from Web Aim among others.

I cover usability for about a week in my introductory web design course but it could easily be an entire course. This recently created screen-cast demonstrates using label tags. Label tags are used to create more usable HTML form inputs. The screen-cast was created using the Scrimba screen-cast tool.

New Screencast/Tutorial Tool

I recently came across a new tool for watching and creating tutorials, Scrimba. The site has many useful tutorials for front end developers. The tutorial series on CSS Grid and Flexbox are great. These layout formats represent the future and any aspiring designer/developer should know the basics. The code editor allows you to manipulate the code directly within the video without the need to open an external editor. You can connect your Github account to authenticate and start watching for free.

Users can use Scrimba to create their own tutorials. As an instructor I create many screen-casts and found the tool to be easy-to-use and develop with. My CSS Flexbox tutorial is currently featured on the homepage. Check it out!
