This session should prove invaluable for NSW members of the Australian Institute of Landscape Designers and Managers. Please see attached flyer outlining the details of the free briefing session for the NEW Australian Standard AS4454 (2012) Composts, soil conditioners and mulches.

Given your interest in organic recycling, soil health, carbon sequestration, plant growth, land management and/or rehabilitation, this free information session given by Angus Campbell of the Recycled Organic Unit will discuss the latest version of the AS4454 Composts, Soil Conditioners and Mulches and how you can make it work for your business.

Controlling the quality of Composts, Soil Conditioners, and Mulches improves product consistency, adds value, reduces risk and allows for the development of fit for purpose materials that takes the guess work out of dealing with recycled organic materials.

The newly revised standard has significant changes including tightening of specifications and controls the addition of product categories and a clearer format.

Attendance of the seminar is a must for anyone with an interest in including:

Composters

Understand the new standard requirements and how to achieve them. Learn how a greater level of control of the compost process can add value to your products, improve operational management and reduce the risk of product failure.

Compost & Mulch Users, Purchasers or Specifiers

Specifying materials that comply with Australian Standard is the smart way to manage risk and demonstrate due diligence. With the addition product categories, is important to understand the differences and to ensure supply of the product that’s right for you. Utilising the standard helps to communicate the requirements of internal stakeholders with suppliers. Comparing compliant products allows for a like with like comparison to make the best value judgement.

New to Composting

If you have been considering starting a compost program this is a perfect introduction. You will better understanding of the composting process, questions to ask, considerations to make, helping to do it right the first time. Meet other members in the composting community to understand

Check out our website

For background information on composting and its applications, please see our Compost for Soils website, www.compostforsoils.com.au

Please feel free to pass this invitation onto others that you think may be interested in attending.

If you are under 40 years and currently a final year TAFE student or a recent horticulture graduate from TAFE NSW, you could become…2012 YOUNG HORTICULTURIST OF THE YEAR What does becoming Young Horticulturist of The Year involve? The award will fund a student’s or recent graduate’s exciting, innovative or sustainably-oriented project that provides benefits to the horticulture industry and/or develops your choice of horticulture as a career. It can be a project you’ve already started, or one you’re just now beginning to imagine.

To get you started, visit the stories of our previous winners and become inspired.

Applications can be a simple, brief written report (maximum 500 words) but it’s a good idea to explain your project using other types of presentation too, like a powerpoint presentation, a model or set of plans, a slide show or a picture portfolio. An independent judging panel (which includes TAFE and industry representatives) will develop a short list for the next stage of judging. Your report should show information like: 1) why the project is important, unique or different 2) an explanation as to how the project might be built or developed 3) how it might benefit the broader horticulture industry 4) how you would use the award funds to undertake or extend the project. If your project wins through to the final round, you’ll get the opportunity to present it to a panel of industry judges. But don’t be worried about that, as there’ll be training and assistance in media, marketing and presentation skills for all the finalists. It’s so simple to WIN that $10,000 prize. Entries are open from May 2012 until AUGUST 31st, 2012. Just fill in the entry form and upload your project IDEA with information in the form of a brief report, photos, plans.

THE RYDE HUNTER’S HILL FLORA AND FAUNA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

NOTICE OF NEXT EVENT AT THE FIELD OF MARS

RESERVE AND WILDLIFE REFUGE:

Saturday 2pm, 28 April

Turpentine Ironbark Forests – Ironing out the Creases:

A classification system for shale forests within the Sydney Basin Sydney’s shale forests have been mostly cleared for farms and timber. Remaining forests are often in isolated remnants and are considered endangered. Though protected under Commonwealth and State Threatened species legislation, classifying these often small, fragmented forest remnants has been sometimes confusing. A recent across-Sydney mapping project classified the different types of shale vegetation and our guest speaker, Roger Lembit, will describe the processes and methodology involved in the development of this mapping project. There will be a special emphasis on the Ryde area which has been one of the most difficult to classify given its location on the edge of the Cumberland Plain. Roger has been a member of the National Parks Association of NSW for over thirty years. He has also worked for the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and The Wilderness Society. He now works as an independent environmental consultant involved in a series of vegetation surveys and monitoring projects focused on the western Blue Mountains. He has particular expertise in flora surveys, vegetation dynamics and conservation of rare or threatened plant species. He has extensive experience in flora surveys across New South Wales.

Registration Now Available!

Thursday, 29th March, 2012

Harrington Grove Country Club

1 Forestgrove Drive, Harrington Park

9:00AM until 4:00PM

A major challenge associated with water sensitive urban design (WSUD) is that as a new form of infrastructure, asset owners, including state entities, private asset owners and most often Local Councils are yet to develop processes for managing these assets. This Technical Tour, being offered by Stormwater NSW and sponsored by ESD Landscape Contractors, will showcase highlights and challenges facing the implementation of WSUD in large scale urban development projects.

First hand insight into the background, context, planning, design and construction issues of WSUD will be examined at each of the following sites – Elizabeth Hills, Gregory Hills, Oran Park, Harrington Grove and Grasmere. This Technical Tour of ground-breaking WSUD application is not to be missed!

The Technical Tour will demonstrate how WSUD works alongside natural habitat systems to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services. Our Presenters, Robert Griffith of ESD Landscapes, Robert Peterson of Brown Consulting and Mal Brown of STORM_Consulting, will lead delegates on a behind the scenes tour of WSUD application in large scale urban development and will provide a first hand insight into what’s hot and what’s not in WSUD. Technical Tour Sites Elizabeth Hills

ESD Landscape Contractors

The rehabilitation works at Elizabeth Hills are aimed to improve biodiversity and ecological processes in Hinchinbrook Creek. After a period of time it is hoped that there will be an increase in abundance and diversity of biota in the water of the macroinvertebrate family groups.

Water quality should improve to allow establishment of species that are more sensitive, such as those rated higher in the Australian pollution sensitivity grades. This in turn may aid in providing necessary links in the food webs for other threatened species. In this project, stormwater is managed by natural systems and provides beautiful amenity to increase property values. When properties were put on the market they were all sold in a few hours due to the riparian aesthetic value.

Gregory Hills

Brown Consulting

Gregory Hills will be the second project site visted on this Technical Tour. Further information on this site will be made available in the coming days.

Oran Park

Brown Consulting

A stormwater management strategy was developed to ensure that the proposed development adequately considered and managed flooding within local tributaries and main reaches of South Creek. The proposal included small detention storages associated with water quality improvements that mitigated erosion and ensured ecologically sustainable creeks throughout the site. Larger detention storages were proposed to ensure that flooding in South Creek does not worsen as a result of the development. The stormwater strategy included the hydrological and hydraulic modelling of over 300,000m3 of detention storage.

In early 2007 a Development Proposal for the proposed augmentation and extension of The Harrington Parkway, a proposed Community/Country Club, and the area covering Campbell Creek (and Tributaries 2 and 3), upstream of the existing Harrington Park residential environs. The stormwater management strategy proposed for The Campbell Creek Rehabilitation and Stabilisation Works project site is functional; delivers the required technical performance; avoids environmental degradation and pressure on downstream ecosystems and infrastructure; and provides for a ‘soft’ sustainable solution for stormwater management within the catchment.

Once the rehabilitated, and relocated creek and trunk drainage corridor as detailed herein, will lend not only aesthetic benefits to the overall Precinct, but also provide opportunities for development of biodiversity, critical habitat, (both floral and faunal), whilst still maintaining a sound mechanism for conveyance of critical storm flows. It is envisioned that after final completion and stabilisation of the reprofiled banks with the nominated revegetation treatments the banks will serve to form an effective riparian and wildlife connectivity corridor throughout the remediated creek precinct and will serve to mimic a natural creek corridor in form and function.

Grasmere

STORM_Consulting

On rural land at Grasmere west of Camden, two developers proposed adjoining residential subdivisions. The first adopted a GPT and wetland basin approach to managing stormwater quality and quantity. The second, Bamburgh Properties, adopted a WSUD-style approach. Bamburgh Properties needed to incorporate two existing farm dams and the subdivision was designed with these as a community and environmental feature. The treatment train comprised pit trap GPTs and two Hydrocon bioretention basins.

This site is interesting to compare the two adopted approaches in relation to land take, aesthetics, maintenance and monitoring. The WSUD approach highlights the importance of timing in relation to connecting up bioretention systems, and of sediment control during construction. The WSUD system has been handed over to Camden Council with water quality and environmental values monitoring showing that it is particularly robust.

Registration Fees

Technical Tour registration includes arrival tea and coffee, morning tea, lunch and supplementary material for each site on the Technical Tour.

SIA Members – $165 Non Members – $185

Registration will be available at the Harrington Grove Country Club from 8:30AM and the coach will be departing at 9:00AM sharp. There is ample parking on the Harrington Grove Country Club grounds for delegates.

Barangaroo Headland Park

Plant Procurement, Soils Specification and the Barangaroo Delivery Authority

“Barangaroo’s Headland Park will be a spectacular place for everyone to enjoy.
It will provide a new vantage point for Sydneysiders and visitors alike to watch the action on Sydney Harbour
at the same time as they soak up the atmosphere of six hectares of lush, naturalistic parkland.

http://http://www.barangaroo.com/

AILA NSW invites you to this workshop, brought to you by our platinum sponsor Andreasens Green and the
Barangaroo Delivery Authority. The new Headland Park will be constructed as a naturalistic park on previous
industrial waterfront land. To create a naturalistic landscape requires considerable research and understanding
of natural systems.

This workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive summary of the myriad of technical aspects that
will be required to procure and deliver this new waterfront open space. It will include discussion overlooking
the site from the BDA offices and a site visit of Barangaroo Headland including the platform overlooking the stone
prototype

——————————————————————————–

As the Horticultural Consultant for the project appointed by the BDA Stuart has worked in collaboration with
Adrian Pilton and Adam Robilliard of JWP Architects/Landscape Architects, Peter Walker of PWP California and
Simon Leake of SESL. Stuart will be speaking with regard to the approach taken and the selection of the
planting species to be used in the development of the Barangaroo Headland Park.
