More than a decade in the courtroom has prepared Aimee Cobb Smith to sit on the bench of the District Court of Montgomery County, Alabama. Smith’s vast knowledge of the legal process, gained through her work as a former prosecutor in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and as a criminal defense attorney will set a new benchmark for candidates vying for this position.

As a lawyer in Montgomery County for more than 13 years, I understand the need for a well rounded experience combined with the right judicial temperament to meet the needs of the legal community.”

Smith’s attraction to the District Court of Montgomery County is the ability to ensure justice and maintain confidence in the justice system, not only for civil and criminal matters, but also for the tax-paying public.

There are 103 District Court Judges sitting in 67 districts within Alabama. The jurisdiction of the District Court of Montgomery County, Alabama consists of misdemeanors and small claims not exceeding $3,000. The District Court also has concurrent jurisdiction with the Circuit Court with claims not exceeding $10,000.

The District Court of Montgomery County, Alabama also holds a probable hearing for those un-indicted defendants who request a hearing within 30 days of their arrest. The Judge determines whether there is probable cause to hold that defendant under their current bond amount while the case is bound over to the grand jury.
