Our own Colonel Ken Wisian has been selected to command the Texas Air National. He is a proud member of AFA Houston and has supported us on every occasion. He brings a depth of experience, knowledge and leadership to the Texas ANG that is unequaled. We salute him. Ken’s background explains in large measure why he was chosen for this job. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1982 and received his commission as a distinguished AFROTC graduate. He became a B-52G Navigator and Radar Navigator at Barksdale AFB and was then selected for the USAF Test Pilot School and became the Chief Test Navigator for the AC-130U Spectre (Spooky) Gunship. Taking time out to pursue his Doctoral degree, he thentransferred to the Texas ANG where he has served in operations and command positions prior to assuming command of the 147th RW at Ellington. He has over 3800 hours in combat aircraft and combat time in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq. You just can’t get more qualified than that. He is married to Dr. Meena Balakrishnan and has one daughter, Danielle. All of the members of AFA Houston, Chapter San Jacinto TX233 wish Ken the best in his new responsibilities as the Texas Air National Guard Commander. He is a true leader.

Col. Shaunte Cooper, Wing EXO and also an AFA member. At the Saturday luncheon, Ken again spoke to

to us about the importance of the Texas Air National Guard to Texas and to the nation, Here he is shown with Kelly Jones, Air Force Association Texas President. The briefing lasted well beyond the alloted time because of the enthusiastic questions from the members.

Next came USAF Colonel and Astronaut Lee Archambault , Mission Commander on STS119.

Lee took us on a ride into space on STS119 as he and his crew installed the final solar panels on the International Space Station. It was exciting from the moment of liftoff filmed both inside and outside the shuttle. Again the dinner ran well over the time alloted because of the many questions from the members.

Kudos go to our own Tommy Thompson who planned the whole event and executed it to perfection.

Chapter 233 will host the AFA Texas State Meeting on February 18 – 20, 2011. The gathering provides a wide range of activities and the entire membership is invited to attend. Tommy Thompson is the coordinator for this major event. It will be held at the NASA Hilton across from the Johnson Space Center on NASA Road 1. The three day event will include a golf tournament, reception, business meetings and several guest speakers. LATEST UPDATE FROM TOMMY:

I have a couple of updates to the Texas AFA Spring Executive Meeting which I’m sure you will enjoy!

We are pleased to announce Astronaut and Air Force Colonel Lee Archambault has agreed to be our guest speaker at dinner on Saturday, February 19, 2011. Colonel Archambault was the Shuttle Commander on STS-117 & STS-119 in 2009 and will narrate the film of that mission. Lee is a member of the San Jacinto Chapter and is also a Daedelian.

The dinner will be held at La Brisa on the Creek in League City, Texas. It is only a short drive from the Hilton to the restaurant and maps will be available at registration. Cocktail time will start at 1800hrs with the Fajita Fiesta to follow around 1845hrs. The cost including gratuity is $23/person.

Our tour of Ellington Field will start at the Predator Simulator Building and will also include a tour of the Predator Hanger. Again, maps for the short drive will be available at registration. Security at Ellington is much like any other Air Force Base. If you have an ID card you may pass without problem. If you do not have an ID card then I must have your name prior to the tour. We will have a host at the gate to resolve any problems. Please let me know ASAP (ID card or not) if you plan to attend. This may be your only chance to get an up close and personal view of Predator! The tour will start at 1500hrs on Friday February 18, 2011.

We firmly believe the tour on Friday and Colonel Wisian’s briefing at Saturday lunch along with Colonel Archambault’s briefing Saturday night will give you valuable insight into the critical missions of the 147th RW and NASA. Please come early and stay late!!

Meet our immediate past chapter president. Colonel Horn brings a wealth of command and management experience to AFA Houston. He is currently deployed to Iraq as his final Air Force career assighment He plans to retire in the Houston area when he returns and we are thankful for that. Rodney brings a rich history of military traditions to the AFA leadership table. He was born in Shreveport, LA to an Air Force family and spent the majority of his childhood overseas as a military brat. His great, great grandfather served with Union forces during the Civil War, his uncle served in the Army Air Corps and his father was career Air Force, retiring in 1970. His family military traditions follow much along the lines of a General Douglas MacArthur and a John McCain with service over a long period of our country’s history. His leadership is just what we need in this time of struggle for freedom, democracy and the maintenance of aerospace power in our modern world. As members, we are proud to serve with him as the all volunteer “Force Behind The Force”.
