Air India’s ‘summer bonanza’

Air India has announced a summer bonanza with special “flight-specific fare from Hyderabad to Delhi, Mumbai and Tirupati” from May 1 to May 31.

The fare on the Hyderabad- Delhi sector is Rs 3825, Hyderabad to Mumbai Rs 2825 and Hyderabad to Tirupati Rs 2975. The fares are inclusive of all taxes.

Details can be had from Air India booking offices and from authorised travel agents, or over the toll-free number 18001801407 or www.airindia.in, a press release said.Meanwhile, Air India Express, the low-cost airline on international sectors is contemplating introducing shortly a flight to Dubai from Hyderabad, Goa, Pune and Ahmedabad, and to Kuwait from Kerala, Mangalore and Ahmedabad.

Air India to shift trans-Atlantic flight to European hub

Air India has indicated that it will discontinue connecting London to North America after it finalises its European hub.

The airline will be shifting these flights to the new hub and will also look at connecting a number of new trans-Atlantic destinations. The airline is currently in the process of evaluating three cities, Munich, Vienna and Frankfurt, to decide on its scissor hub in Europe.

P K Gupta, executive director, sales and marketing-passenger, Air India said, “In Europe, we are currently operating to London, Paris and Frankfurt. London will become a terminating flight. Paris and Frankfurt might be merged to fly into the new hub. In the US, we are looking at connecting Houston, San Francisco, Dallas, Boston and Washington DC after the hub is formalised.”

He said studies were on to examine the traffic patterns and the viability of connecting these destinations. He did not indicate the type of aircraft to be used or the timeline for these services.

Currently, the airline connects London to the John F Kennedy airport in New York as well as O’Hare International airport in Chicago. It also flies to Newark through Paris. Jet Airways is scheduled to start flying to San Francisco through Shanghai from mid June.

Kingfisher Airlines had also indicated plans to connect the west coast of the US to India through a non-stop flight. Gupta indicated that Air India would look to connect the US only through its European hub and will not look at flying over the Pacific Ocean.

To tide over the delay in the delivery of Boeing 787’s Air India has also brought out ads on its website to lease out aircrafts. Gupta said, “We are looking to lease around 10 aircrafts. Our own fleet today is a mix of owned and leased and a few of the leases are ending. We have to cover these also.”

The Boeing 787’s were part of a 68 aircraft order to Boeing, were earlier scheduled to replace these aircrafts. The Indian flag carrier is in the midst of completing a merger with its domestic counterpart Indian Airlines.

NEW DELHI: Public carrier Indian Airlines on Wednesday gave itself a makeover by taking a new name and logo, a sign of the changing times, besides inducting its first new aircraft in 11 years.
But signifying continuity with change, "the new look of the airline communicates a bold, striking, progressive and distinctive image," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told reporters at the IGI International Airport in New Delhi.
A graphic depiction of a partly-visible blue "wheel" inspired by the Sun Temple at Konark on the Orange tail "symbolises timeless motion and trust that has stood the test of time," he said.
The state-run carrier also dropped the word 'Airlines' from its name and would hereafter be known simply as 'Indian.' The name 'Indian' would appear on both sides of the body in English and Devnagari script.
Receiving delivery of a brand new A-319 aircraft leased by the airlines, Patel said: "With the new aircraft in place, Indian Airlines will be able to take the competition head on."
"The new aircraft signals a new era for Indian Airlines and the airlines would induct one new plane every month from the latter half of 2006," he said.
The Union Cabinet had recently cleared a proposal enabling the state-owned airline to acquire 43 aircraft from Airbus Industrie.
Patel said the induction of new planes would also enable the airline to expand its footprint in the domestic as well as some international destinations.
