Kat & Aaron's Sag Harbor Wedding

We knew that Kat and Aaron's wedding was going to be incredible from the very first conversation we had with them (via Skype from India!)...they're both fun, fashionable architects who fell in love while working together at their design firm in the Hamptons. Ever since our first "meeting" with them, we had been anxiously awaiting meeting them in person and being a part of their beautiful northeastern coast wedding!

It turns out that Kat and Aaron are two of the sweetest, hospitable, warm, engaging, and fun people we have ever met. Ever. Seriously! Whether it was offering us their guestroom to stay in, special ordering a lobster for us (thanks Caitlin!), or inviting us back the day after the wedding for breakfast with the family; they went out of their way to make us feel at home and make sure we were welcomed as friends. The more time we spent with them, the more we realized that this is just who they are. This is just the way they treat people, and above all else I think that's what makes them so different. Everything they say and do exudes the love they have for the people around them, and it's intoxicating. ~Gerald

Kat & Aaron's wedding touched me in so many ways...I was inspired, moved to tears, and challenged. I was inspired. By the beautiful ocean scenery and the lines created by wooden beams, telephone poles, and bridges. By the bridesmaids' billy ball & succulent bouquets. By Kat's gorgeous Amsale gown. By the sweetness of Kat & Aaron's love for each other. And by the tight-knit community that exists among the people who live in the Hamptons year-round. I cried. During the rehearsal dinner when some bongo drummers came to honor the memory of Kat's brother. When Caitlin loaned a special blue bracelet to Kat. When Kat & her dad were waiting in the hallway getting ready to walk down the aisle. At the end of the weekend when I had to say goodbye to our new, dear friends. I was challenged. To be a better person and to seek ways to help & appreciate those around me. To not take myself too seriously--i.e., grab a glass of champagne & dance! To stretch myself creatively, and to continue to take risks in life & in art. ~Airika

I'm not sure why, but for me this image sums up what I think it feels to see East Hampton from a non-tourist perspective. Far from the crowded beaches and high-end shopping, this place has beauty and character. The old roads, lined with power lines, only seem to get used by locals heading home, or fishermen looking for a fresh catch of fish or clams to serve up for their family at dinner that evening...

While we were shooting these next few photos on Lily Pond Lane (I think we were blocking Bon Jovi's driveway while we took this photo!), several cars slowed down to ask if it was a real wedding or a fashion shoot. Then, a photographer from the local paper (the East Hampton Star) stopped and grabbed a few photos of us while we worked. She didn't show our faces or mention our name, but at least our backs are now locally famous! ;)

We love the church that Kat & Aaron picked for their ceremony. The Old Whalers' Church, built in 1844, was so iconically northeast with its rows of wooden pews, a proudly displayed American flag, and tall white pillars. The only thing missing was its steeple--which was completely blown off during a hurricane in 1938. Personally, I'm a big fan of the church with no steeple, but rumors are that they have plans to rebuild it. I'm so glad we had a chance to takes photos of it before they do!

Oh-and I love the following series of photos--Kat as she snuck into the church, Aaron's joyful expectation of his bride, and the look that Kat & her dad shared coming down the aisle.

Our walk through downtown Sag Harbor was pretty amazing. I'm pretty sure that everyone in this town knows and loves these two! They could hardly walk down the street without being pulled into another restaurant for free drinks.

Faces of India

If there's one thing I learned about photography on this trip, it's that shooting with a photojournalistic approach is not as easy as you might expect when you stick out like a sore thumb. Everywhere we went in India, we were warmly greeted by friendly faces who were eager to meet us, talk to us, or just get their photo taken. We couldn't exactly be a "fly on the wall" when people kept coming up to us, but we wouldn't trade any of these photos for the world. We met so many incredible people throughout our trip, and even though we didn't always speak the same language, they never failed to show us the joy in they hearts.

Adventures in Vellore

For the first two weeks we were in India, we stayed at the Christian Counseling Center in Vellore. This training Institute not only provides counseling services to the surrounding community, but they have training programs for a wide variety of leaders and students. During our time there, we were privileged to meet a group of students from Hyderabad who were taking a training course for their Master in Psychology program. We made many new friendships and had so much fun hanging out with them.

The first evening we went to an "Exhibition," which is basically like a county fair. We braved the rickety Ferris Wheel--it had no seat belts, low railings, and went way too fast. I would have gladly paid three times the ticket price for them to stop that thing early!

One of the highlights for Airika was when some of the girls offered to do mehndi on her arms and hands. It was a much longer process than we had realized, and it is rather difficult to sleep with henna all over your arms and hands, but the result was quite beautiful.

Swimming with the students in this shallow pool was actually quite entertaining. Apparently it's rare to find water pools deeper than two feet in their part of the country, so for many of them, it was their first time really swimming. Of course no one was prepared for a swim, but once one of them jumped in, that was all it took.

Another Use for Coconuts

One of the highlights of our time in Vellore was a family that we met one evening while walking through the neighborhood. The women in the family were out in front of the house, beating a large pile of coconut husk fibers to separate them. When we stopped to talk to them, we quickly learned that no one in the family spoke any English (and we obviously don’t speak Tamil). Nevertheless, they were quite eager to show us what they were making. They attached a bit of the fiber to a hand-cranked machine and began spinning it into a rope. It's pretty amazing how much work goes into each strand of rope they make. First they collect the husks, then soak them, then separate and dry the fibers, and finally spin them into a rope. Once they finished their demo, they insisted that we take the piece they had made for us, even though we had no money with us to buy it with. It was so wonderful to meet people who were so generous with what they had, and so genuinely interested in sharing a little piece of their lives with us.

I love this photo of their family. After taking it, we went and had it printed, and made a small photo album of the images shown here. Then we gave it to the family. Their reaction was priceless—we actually took an interpreter with us to deliver the photos and the family told us that they could have never afforded photos of themselves and they were so grateful. It was yet another reminder of the impact that a single image can make in a person’s life. I love my job.

Curry for Breakfast

I consider myself an adventurous eater -- just ask any of my closest friends who have succumbed to a dinner at one of my favorite restaurants. The fare could include Ethiopian, Thai, Indian, Greek, or Japanese Sushi. But in all my culinary adventures, I can honestly say that I have never had curry for breakfast. That is, until we arrived in India.

Our first breakfast in India was truly East meets West. We had toast with butter and jam, boiled eggs, vayah (a fried dough made of lentil flower, spices and pepper that looks just like a doughnut), dahl, and curry. Noticing that the curry was stocked full of chili peppers, we popped a Tums and said our prayers. Needless to say, we loved every bite of the Indian breakfast and I quickly returned for seconds of vadah and curry. Some people were concerned that the swift introduction of spicy food into our morning diet may be a harsh way to begin our trip, but aside from a little brief stomach rumbling, I didn't experience any repercussions and I've been eating it ever since! :)

Ancient Culture

Jalakantesvara Temple

One of the major sights here in Vellore is the Hindu Temple inside Vellore Fort. It was constructed in the 16th century and is still used for worship to this day. It's simply remarkable to see the intricate details carved into the ancient pillars and walls. We were lucky enough to have our new friend Ratheesh guide us through the temple and explain some of the meaning behind the customs and rituals that were going on inside. We were able get a few photos around the outer courtyard of the temple, but like most other temples, they didn't allow photos in the inner most chambers.

Our time here in Vellore, India has been an incredible experience. The streets and markets are always bustling and full of activity, the air is constantly filled with the sounds of honking horns, and there is no shortage of cows roaming the town scavenging for their next meal. The people are incredibly warm and friendly--every time we walk through the local neighborhood people excitedly greet us and invite us into their homes for tea.

This was just one of those moments when I happened to be in the right place at the right time, ready to shoot. These boys were running down the street towards me, chasing down their kite which had broken free of the string...

This is what they called a "mall." The aromas coming from this dark alley were absolutely intoxicating. There were rows and rows of flower vendors, fruit stands, and fresh spices, interspersed with other goods such as jewelry, fabrics, and trinkets.

This image really struck me, mostly because this man's expression was so out of place. Just as I snapped this photo, there was a lot of yelling and commotion coming from behind me, and I turned just in time to dodge the bull trotting up the narrow pathway.

Hong Kong

We have arrived in India! But first, a little about our day trip into Hong Kong:

Airika and I had a long layover in Hong Kong, and we took the opportunity to get out and see a bit of the city. We had about 15 hours, and I wish our stay could have been longer. We spent the first part of the day trekking to the temple of 10,000 Buddha’s. I spent much of the climb up the steep, lush, hillside wondering if there really were 10,000 Buddha’s, or if it was just an expression. I assure you, it’s no expression—there really were 10,000, if not more. In fact, the number of Buddha’s may even rival the number of 7-11’s we saw in Hong Kong. Seriously, Hong Kong has more 7-11’s than Seattle has Starbucks.

We also wanted to see the city’s open air markets, and on the way there (or more likely on one of our many detours b/c I got us lost quite a bit) we came across the goldfish markets. It was actually pretty amazing to see—in addition to all kinds of goldfish and exotic fish, we also saw more turtle species than I knew existed.

One of the highlights of the day was actually while we were walking around in one of the high end shopping districts called 1881 Heritage. Now, high-end shopping isn’t really at the top our must-do travel list, but while we were passing through, we spotted a bride across the courtyard with her photographers in tow. Of course, we thought it would be fun to try and grab a quick photo, and by the time I got the camera out we had spotted 3 other brides, along with their entourage of wedding party, family and photographers! It was pretty humorous watching each little group rotate through the courtyard, waiting their turn for photos in the next spot. In the end, we counted at least 12 wedding couples, and that was all within a 20 minute time period! Apparently, it is THE place to get your wedding photos taken in Hong Kong.

At the end of the day, we took a ride from Kowloon to downtown Hong Kong on the famous Star Ferry. Back in 1996, Airika spent about a month in Hong Kong, and even though much has changed since then, the Ferry and the view it afforded us was one of the few things that was still exactly as she remembered it. In particular, I found the nighttime view of the downtown skyline to be pretty incredible.

We hope to update with more about our time in India soon. But for now, we hope you enjoyed this little collection of photos from Hong Kong.

Heading to India

On the eve of our trip to India, Airika and I are completely ecstatic about our journey. I really can’t help but think back to our experiences 5 years ago when we went to Sri Lanka to do relief work right after the tsunami. We spent most of that trip traveling from village to village, delivering fresh water, listening to people’s stories, taking photos, and doing what we could to help. We saw a lot of pain and devastation that had been caused by the tsunami, but we saw just as much that had been caused by decades of civil war in the region. That trip really changed our perspective on the world, and inspired within us a passion to do what we can to help those in need. Since we are not experts in water treatment, medical care, engineering or construction, we decided that we could use photography as a way to let their stories be heard.

Here are just a few of the images we took 5 years ago in Sri Lanka. This is where it all started for us.

…which brings us back to our upcoming trip to India. For part of our trip, we will be visiting our dear friend Dr. B.J. Prashantham and witnessing (and hopefully capturing) some of the work that he and his colleagues at the Christian Counseling Center of India have been doing. The center is dedicated to helping people from developing countries who have been traumatized by natural disasters or civil war, get the counseling and support they need to recover mentally and emotionally from what they have been through. It’s an amazing organization that is doing what it can to reach out and help in a way that is almost always overlooked. We are so excited to witness their work first hand!

Graydon & Erin: Engaged

We had so much fun planning & photographing Graydon & Erin's engagement session! When Erin told us that their wedding theme was vintage whimsical, we thought it would be fun to try and fit their engagement session within that theme as well. Gerald and I set out early one December morning to scout for locations and we found some pretty cool spots all over Redmond, Bellevue and Issaquah. In the end, we settled on Marymoor Park and a woodsy trail near the south end of Lake Sammamish. I'm suprised that this was the first time that we have set up a shoot at Marymoor--it's practically in our backyard, and it's an amazing location! The next day, we met up with Graydon & Erin and had a truly inspirational photo shoot. We may have gotten a little cold, but we had an amazing time with these two lovebirds!

Allison & Tyler: First Wedding of the New Decade

Allison and Tyler's wedding was a perfect way to start off the new year! The new year is a time to stop and reflect on our lives, assess our priorities, and hopefully, adjust our lives accordingly. In a lot of ways, their wedding was a reminder of just how important this is. Allison's dad has been fighting a difficult battle over the past year, and in many way's I'm sure it has been a constant reminder to his family that our lives are short, and that it's incredibly important that we do everything we can to appreciate and spend time with the ones we love. It's interesting how life's challenges help put things into perspective.

Watching Allison's dad walk her down the aisle was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long, long time. The entire room gasped when he stood up out of his wheelchair and took her by the arm. There was hardly a dry eye in the place--in fact, I'm getting choked up now just writing about it!

As for Allison and Tyler, it's just amazing to me how much they love each other. They are some of the most gracious, supportive, giving, and caring people I know, and no mater what they face in life, I am confident that they will always come out stronger.

Jack and Josh

Meet our nephews, Jackson and Joshua. While Airika and I were in NC this past Thanksgiving, my brother John asked us to do a photo session for these two and it was definitely one of the highlights of our visit! These two little heart-breakers-in-the-making are the best nephews anyone could ever ask for, and we love them to death! I mean, how could you not?!? :)

Bald Head Island Portraits

I love North Carolina. I suppose I'm a little partial having grown up there, but there's no denying that it is a beautiful place. On our last trip back, the Deterding family invited my parents, Airika, and I to stay out at Bald Head Island. It's a small community off the coast of NC which can only be accessed by boat... and the only vehicles on the island are bicycles and golf carts! They have an amazing house right on the water, and we had a great time just relaxing, fishing, exploring this beautiful community, and of course, photographing Liz, Jim & Kenneth's portrait session! We are already planning our next trip back, but until then, enjoy these photos of a beautiful family in one of our new favorite east coast destinations!

Well, it's been an awesome year for our Pictage User Group (PUG), and do you know why? Honestly, it's because we have such an amazing group! Pictage is keenly aware of the great community we have up here in the Northwest, and we have worked hard with them (thank you Emily & Jim!) to make sure that some of the best speakers in the country get a chance to experience our group first hand.

As the year comes to a close, we wanted to make sure that we took the time to say thanks to all of the amazing speakers who came out, and especially to all of you who join us each month and are an integral part of this community of photographers. We are thrilled that we have had the opportunity to lead and learn along with you, and we look forward to growing together as we enter a new decade!

For those of you who may not have been at all the meetings, here are a few highlights from 2009...

Lanie's Infant Session

Some of you may remember the very first baby portraits we ever did, for a sweet little girl named Alexis. Well, Alexis is now two years old, and big sister to 3 month old Lanie. Coming back to her home for a few portraits of little Lanie was a special treat for us--when we arrived, we were so excited and honored to see our photographs gracing her family's walls and coffee tables. It really made our day!

It's amazing how different two sisters can be--they looked so different at this age, and we could already see the differences in their personalities. Alexis still loves the camera as much as ever, while Lanie prefers more of a photojournalistic approach. :) We really had a great time with their beautiful family, and we can't wait to return in a few months for more!

Allison and Tyler

We met Allison last year when she was the maid of honor at Kristin and Justin's wedding, and we couldn't be more excited to be shooting her and Tyler's wedding in January. These two are so much fun! Their smiles are genuine, their laughter is contagious, and the joy in their hearts is plain to see.

For their engagement session, we braved a little light rain as we played with their dog Dag in the backyard, and then headed out to the Arboretum in Seattle. We'd been eying this photo location for a couple of months and were so excited that Allison & Tyler wanted to shoot here.

Allsion & Tyler, we love how with a single glance, you make each other laugh and encourage the best in each other. Thank you for choosing us to capture your wedding memories.

There are a lot of overpasses and bridges in this part of the Arboretum, which make it a great place to shoot on a cloudy day. The natural shadows cast by the bridges can be used to turn the soft, flat light we tend to get on cloudy days, into soft directional light that sculpts your subjects and gives them depth.

Katlyne & Erik: Gasworks Park E-Session

Meet Katlyne & Erik, a young couple very much in love--both with each other and with God. Their passion for each other and their faith is evident to everyone who meets them, and a source of true inspiration to Airika & I. We had so much fun tromping around in the leaves at Gasworks Park with these two. They love to laugh, and half the time, they were so caught up in each other that I think they completely forgot we were there! Katlyne & Erik, thank you for your authenticity and for being so much fun to work with. We can't wait for your wedding at Hidden Meadows in April!

Neil & Kelly's Engagement Session

From our very first meeting, we knew that working with Neil & Kelly was going to be an absolute joy. They were quiet, kind, and wore their love and adoration for each other on their sleeves. They were referred by a long line of wonderful people including the mother of two past brides, Miranda & Mackenzie. In fact, most of our first meeting was spent laughing about how many of our friends knew each other!

For their engagement session, we actually ended up shooting right here in beautiful Redmond, WA. If you don't already know, Gerald and I live in Redmond (home to Microsoft and Nintendo), yet we have never photographed an engagement session here. We had a great time exploring our own backyard, and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful fall day. Everywhere we turned, the trees were bursting with color! We hope that you enjoy the warmth of fall in Redmond and the sweet love that these two share. Neil & Kelly, we can't wait to capture your wedding day this April!

Sarah and Derek's Queen Anne Engagement Session

Sarah and Derek decided to give us a little tour of Queen Anne for their engagement session. It's a special place for them--much of their life together has been spent here. Their houses are only a few blocks apart up on the hill and whenever they have free time, this is where they tend to spend it; walking the streets, hanging out at the local coffee shops (like Bustle), and finding incredible food and wine in their neighborhood. This is their home, but like Airika and I, they love to travel and see the world. They may not live on Queen Anne forever, but no matter where their journey together takes them, they will always have these photos to remember it by.

Meet Elsa

Meet Elsa. She is the newest addition to Kelly & Pat's family, one of our 2008 wedding couples who are now dear friends. When Kelly & Pat told us that they were expecting, we were so excited for them! We knew that we just had to take her newborn photos--I mean how could we not? Look at their cute little girl!

We had a wonderful afternoon hanging out with little Elsa and photographing her in her new world. Kelly & Pat, it's been such a privilege for us to document the beginning of your journey into marriage, and now parenthood as well! Thank you for your friendship and for trusting us with your family's memories.

Rebekah & Jonathan: Harvest Wedding

Fall may very well be my favorite time of year. It’s the time for harvest and celebration, family gatherings and great food, accented by bright colors and crisp, cool air. As Rebekah and Jonathan’s harvest wedding at Hidden Meadows drew closer, Airika & I grew even more excited about capturing the richness of emotion and detail that was sure to present itself at their wedding.

Erin Lindeman did an incredible job with the event decor. The details were absolutely amazing!

Such a beautiful location... not to mention that the light is perfect at this time of day!

We hit it off with Melanie & Chuck from the very first meeting. We were sitting outside in the rain at the UVillage Starbucks when we discovered our shared love for travel, wine, and good food. The perfect match was confirmed when they told us that they wanted to set aside three hours on their wedding day for portraits in Seattle--yes please! They always made us feel welcome and frequently reminded us that they chose us not only because of our photographic abilities, but because they really liked the idea of actually getting to know their vendors--people who they truly wanted to share their day with. We couldn't ask for more--for us, the joy in photographing weddings is not only found in the art we create, but in the relationships that we build with our couples. Melanie & Chuck, thank you for sharing a glimpse into your lives and for allowing us the privilege to capture your beautiful wedidng day.
