PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - U.S. Northern Command is coordinating Department of Defense’s support to FEMA and state and local response activities in response to Hurricane Isaac. There are currently ten Mission Assignments approved for Hurricane Isaac. U.S. Northern Command has deployed four UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters from Fort Campbell, Ky. and two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters from Norfolk Naval Air Station, Va., to assist in search and rescue efforts. A SAR planner has also been activated and deployed to the Baton Rouge Emergency Operations Center. There are four Emergency Planners Liaison Officers deployed to the National Response Coordination Center in support of FEMA and Fort Polk, La. has been designated as a Federal Team Staging Area. Astronomers Discover Planetary System Orbiting Two Suns.

Astronomers using NASA's Kepler space telescope have discovered a planetary system orbiting two suns. The planetary system is located about 5000 light-years away from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan). The pair of stars whirls around each other every 7.5 days. One star is similar to our Sun while the other is a diminutive star only one third the size and 175 times fainter. Philippine Airlines Buys 54 Airbus Jets Worth $7 Billion

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus on Tuesday secured a $7 billion order from Philippine Airlines (PAL), beating American rival Boeing as they continue their global contest to increase their market share. Philippine Airlines said it plans to buy up to 100 new aircraft over the next decade as it carries out a major fleet modernization program and restructures operations to become a low-cost carrier. In July of this year, KLM started retiring their fleet of MD-11s with plans to replace them with more fuel efficient aircraft. “Phasing out the MD11 forms part of KLM’s ongoing fleet renewal programme,” a KLM spokesperson explained to AirlineReporter.com. “The last of KLM’s ten MD11s is expected to leave the fleet by the end of 2014.” For the long term, KLM plans to replace the MD-11s with 787-9s, but until then, they will Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s. A hover bike resembling the ones from ‘Return of the Jedi’ has been developed by a US firm, bringing science fiction to life.

California-based firm Aerofex created an aerial vehicle with two ducted rotors instead of wheels, which originates from a design abandoned in the 1960s because of stability and rollover problems. Breaking News: 1 killed after plane crashes in West L.A. neighborhood

(CNN) -- One person aboard a single-engine plane was killed Friday after the aircraft crashed in a West Los Angeles neighborhood, authorities said. The pilot of the Cessna 210 declared an emergency for unknown reasons around 6:10 p.m. shortly after leaving Santa Monica Airport, according to Ian Gregor, a spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration's in its Western-Pacific region. More

Dulles collision: Lufthansa Airbus, United Express commuter plane collide

A Lufthansa Airbus A330 and a United Express commuter plane collided on a taxiway near the A gates at Dulles, says Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Spokesperson Rob Yingling. The NTSB is investigating the incident. A spokesman for Pinnacle Airlines, the parent company of Colgan Air, says the United Express airplane, Flight 3912, was from Pittsburgh to Dulles and operated by Colgan Air. The aircraft is a Bombardier Q400.

Here's a statement from Pinnacle: • On Friday afternoon, 8/10, a Lufthansa aircraft clipped the tail of Colgan flight 3912 operating as United Express (PIT-IAD) during taxi to the gate at Dulles International Airport (IAD). • The Captain of the Colgan Q400 aircraft was able to continue to the gate, and all 68 passengers safely deplaned. There were no reported injuries. • We are investigating the incident and are working with both the FAA and NTSB. There were 183 people on the Lufthansa flight.

At Last, Huge Hybrid Airship for ISR Makes First Flight

The Northrop Grumman long endurance, multi-intelligence vehicle (LEMV) has made a 90-minute first flight, about one year behind schedule. The 304-foot-long optionally manned hybrid airship was released from tether at Lakehurst, N.J., on August 7, according to the sponsoring agency, the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC).

The primary objective of the first flight was to perform a safe launch and recovery, with the secondary objective of verifying the flight control system, the USASMDC said. “Additional first-flight objectives included airworthiness testing and demonstration, and system-level performance verification. All objectives were met during the first flight,” the Army continued. The LEMV was manned for the first flight, and will also be manned for subsequent test flights following “a detailed inspection of the vehicle,” the USASMDC added.

NASA Global Hawk Pilots Face Challenges Flying Hurricane Missions

Uma aeronave da Avianca teve dois pneus furados durante o pouso na noite desta segunda-feira no Aeroporto Internacional de Brasília.

Apesar do problema, o avião conseguiu parar numa pista de táxi, lateral à pista principal. Os passageiros desceram e foram levados de ônibus até o terminal. Não houve feridos.

Segundo a Infraero, a pista do aeroporto está liberada e a operação transcorre normalmente agora. A assessoria da estatal ainda não tinha a confirmação da procedência do voo.

No horário do incidente, chegava um voo de Belo Horizonte da Avianca. A Anac (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil) informou que está levantando informações sobre o ocorrido.

Irã testa com sucesso míssil de curto alcance

O Irã lançou com êxito um míssil de curto alcance equipado com novo sistema de direção que planeja instalar em todos os foguetes a serem fabricados no futuro, disse neste sábado o ministro de Defesa, Ahmad Vahidi.

"Com o Fateh 110 de quarta geração as forças armadas de nosso país podem atacar e destruir barcos em mar e em terra, quartéis inimigos (...) plataformas de mísseis, armazéns de municões e outros pontos", disse Vahidi, segundo publicou a Agência de Notícias da República Islâmica.

O Fateh 110 possui alcance em torno de 300 quilômetros, conforme reportou a Agência de Notícias da República Islâmica, significando que somente poderia atacar os vizinhos mais próximos do Irã.

O anúncio foi feito em meio a uma crescente tensão nas instalações nucleares do Irã. Os países do Ocidente acreditam que a república islâmica tenta desenvolver armar atômicas.

IMPACTO SEM DESVIOS

"Temos instalado em nossos mísseis novos sistemas de direção e durante o voo de ensaio (...) foi provado sua capacidade para impactar um alvo sem desvios", assegurou Vahidi, segundo a Agência de Notícias da República Islâmica.

No passado, o Irã ameaçou fechar o Estreito de Ormuz, o setor do Golfo Pérsico por onde passam 40% dos embarques mundiais de petróleo e gás, em represália por sanções internacionais aplicadas contra sua indústria energética.

Uma medida dessa natureza poderia causar uma resposta militar por parte dos Estados Unidos, que tem reforçado a presença de suas forças na região.

Homem pula de avião de passageiros em movimento na Malásia

Incidente com voo da Air Asia ocorreu enquanto aeronave taxiava em Miri. Passageiros se assustaram, mas ninguém se feriu, e o homem foi preso.

Um homem pulou de um avião de passageiros em movimento quando a aeronave se preparava para decolar de um aeroporto na Malásia, segundo a imprensa local.

O voo AK 5187, da Air Asia, ia de Miri, no estado de Sarawak, para a capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Ele estava marcado para sair às 19h40 desta sexta (3), mas atrasou-se uma hora por conta do incidente, que também afetou outros voos. Uma testemunha disse que, quando o voo estava prestes a decolar, o homem repentinamente abriu as portas de emergência e saltou. Os passageiros se assustaram, e o avião interrompeu a decolagem, segundo um passageiro.

O capitão Fareh Ishraf Mazputra, da autoridade regional de aviação, disse que o incidente ocorreu logo que o avião começou a taxiar. "Ninguém se machucou, e o passageiro foi preso", disse.

O homem, que teria por volta de 25 anos segundo testemunhas, não parece ter se ferido. Ainda não se sabe o que teria motivado a sua atitude.
