Malawi’s reputation as a top travel destination continues to rise, with the country recently earning a spot as the only African destination in ABTA’s ‘Destinations to Watch in 2025’. As the “Warm Heart of Africa” gains international recognition, key developments in its tourism industry are helping to solidify its status. Among the standout locations driving this progress is Liwonde National Park, a haven of conservation and eco-tourism that has seen remarkable advancements in 2024 and has ambitious plans for 2025.

LATAM Airlines Group has wrapped up a historic 2024, marking a year of record financial performance, passenger growth, and sustainability achievements. With a net income of $977 million—nearly double that of the previous year — and 82 million passengers transported, the airline group has reinforced its position as the leading carrier in Latin America and beyond.

Financial and Operational Success

LATAM achieved total operating revenues of $13.03 billion, a 10.6% increase from 2023. The group also reported a 15.1% rise in consolidated capacity, aligning with its growth projections.

Key financial highlights:

Fourth-quarter revenues: $3.39 billion, including a 29.1% increase in cargo revenue

Adjusted operating income: $1.66 billion, with a record 12.7% operating margin

Liquidity: $3.53 billion, with adjusted net leverage of 1.7x

Cash flow generation: Over $243 million, including $207 million used for refinancing

Adjusted EBITDAR: $3.11 billion, a 22.7% year-over-year increase

A major financial milestone for LATAM Airlines Group S.A. in 2024 was its return to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the successful refinancing of most of its non-fleet debt, significantly reducing interest expenses. The airline also secured its first Sustainability-Linked Loan of $300 million, making it the only airline in South America to complete such a transaction.

Expanding Routes & Enhancing Customer Experience

In 2024, LATAM continued expanding its network, operating flights to 151 destinations across 27 countries and achieving a load factor of 84.3%, up 1.2 percentage points from the previous year. The airline also added 16 new aircraft, bringing its fleet to 347 aircraft.

LATAM maintained its customer-first approach, investing in:

The LATAM Pass Frequent Flyer Program, which reached 49 million members, the largest in the region

Punctuality improvements, ranking among the top five global airline groups

A record-high Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 51, three points higher than in 2023

Major reductions in customer complaints, including a 21.8% decrease in Chile and a 51% drop in Colombia

Recognition as Brazil’s top airline for customer care by Reclame Aqui, a leading consumer review platform

LATAM also continued upgrading its aircraft, retrofitting 100% of its narrow-body fleet and 54% of its wide-body fleet with new seats, entertainment systems, and design improvements. The airline expanded free Wi-Fi for LATAM Pass members, covering 100% of the narrow-body fleet in Brazil and 75% of the fleet in Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Leading the Way in Sustainability

LATAM made significant progress in sustainability in 2024, advancing its efforts to minimize environmental impact while creating social and economic value.

Key sustainability achievements:

Eliminated 97% of single-use plastics, equivalent to 1,700+ tons

Recycled 280 tons of waste from domestic flights in 2024

Reduced CO2 emissions by 4.5 million tons from 2010 to 2024

Maintained 50+ partnerships with social and environmental organizations

LATAM’s commitment to sustainability earned it a return to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and recognition as the 5th most sustainable airline group worldwide—and the most sustainable in the Americas, according to S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).

Looking Ahead to 2025

After an exceptional 2024, LATAM Airlines is well-positioned for continued growth and innovation. With strong financials, network expansion, customer experience enhancements, and industry-leading sustainability efforts, LATAM is set to further strengthen its position as the top airline in Latin America and a global aviation leader.

Santorini’s Seismic Activity: Separating Fact from Fiction

Recent speculation about potential volcanic activity or a major earthquake in Santorini has raised concerns, but VIP Santorini assures residents and visitors that there is no scientific evidence supporting such claims. Leading seismologists and volcanologists continue to monitor the island closely, and no official alerts have been issued.

Recent Tremors Are Normal, Not a Cause for Alarm

Santorini has experienced minor tremors ranging from 2.0 to 4.0 on the Richter scale—well within normal geological patterns for the region. While some reports have fueled unnecessary fear, experts confirm that these small seismic activities do not indicate an imminent eruption or a major earthquake.

One-Day Precautionary Measures Raise Questions

A one-day precautionary measure set for Monday, February 2, has further fueled speculation. However, experts argue that if a real risk existed, precautions would logically extend beyond a single day. This highlights the lack of substantial scientific evidence for any immediate threat.

Santorini Remains Safe and Open for Tourism

VIP Santorini urges the public and media to rely on verified scientific data rather than speculation. Santorini continues to be a safe and thriving destination, welcoming visitors to experience its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and world-class hospitality.

For the most reliable information, always refer to official sources and scientific authorities.

Kissimmee, Florida air-touring company Mauiva has launched two U.S. ‘AirCruise’ tours which it believes will revolutionize the concept of guide-escorted sightseeing packages both in the United States and internationally.

Mauiva has partnered with Florida-based travel wholesaler Tourico Holidays – a subsidiary of Travel Holdings, Inc. – to create two competitively priced itineraries that replace traditional multi-destination coach tours with packages that rely extensively on private air travel from business-aviation terminals at smaller airports.

At most airport stops on each Mauiva AirCruise, the luxury coaches used for ground transfers pull up right next to the aircraft and guests transfer directly to and from the two vehicles. Use of business-aviation terminals and direct airport-ramp entry means that guests don’t have to deal with the hassle of getting through TSA security checkpoints

In addition to replacing road travel by air travel, Mauiva’s use of business-aviation terminals and private aircraft means that tour guests do not have to go through the bothersome TSA security checks to which air travelers are subjected at regular airline terminals. This makes the air-travel component of each AirCruise feel convenient and easy, as well as saving time.

By using private air travel to replace road travel between leading sightseeing destinations, Mauiva claims to save more than 20 hours of road travel on its five-night, six-full-day ‘All-American East Experience’ and more than 40 hours on its six-night, seven-day ‘Western Wonder Experience’.

The mighty Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls are simply awe-inspiring. Some 60 million gallons of water pour each minute over the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls

Mauiva uses this saved time to pack in additional sightseeing opportunities and access to various additional attractions and tourism experiences at the destinations, all of which are pre-paid and pre-arranged for tour guests. Despite providing this added-value component, Mauiva says the average retail prices of its packages are less than those of comparable traditional, guide-escorted coach tours.

All ground links between airports and nearby sightseeing destinations are provided by luxury coaches – most equipped for Wi-Fi – and guests do not need to worry about handling their baggage at any point during the tour. Baggage is taken direct from the start-point to the aircraft, and then at each intermediate destination on the tour, guests’ baggage is taken direct to (and picked up directly from) their hotel rooms. Guests are allowed to bring one 44lb (20kg) case as checked baggage and one smaller item such as a purse, laptop bag or other bag. (No roll-on cases are allowed on the aircraft, because the aircraft do not have overhead bins).

The Niagara Falls are one of North America’s most spectacular natural wonders

Overnight accommodations are in four-star hotels and full breakfast and dinner each day is included in the cost, as is the cost of all porterage and gratuities. Breakfasts are provided by the hotels (generally in the form of extensive breakfast buffets) and group dinners are arranged at good-quality restaurants, though menu choices for each group are limited. Itinerary-inspired souvenirs such as sunscreen and wine-bottle openers are also given out to guests, and each day Mauiva provides guests with a complimentary Daily Mauiva Newsletter detailing the following day’s activities, weather forecast and recommended dress.

From Table Rock next to the lip of the Horseshoe Falls, you get a wonderful view of the ‘Maid of the Mist’ boats fighting the currents to get as near to the downpour from the falls as they safely can

Mauiva’s AirCruise tours are accompanied by specially selected ‘travel hosts’, who are multi-lingual and are accredited by either the International Guide Academy or the International Tour Management Institute. The travel hosts’ jobs are to provide information about the destinations, sights and attractions covered by the tour; help guests with any additional requirements they have; and make sure that all accommodation, dining and attraction-entry arrangements are in place in advance of the tour arriving at each destination. Additionally, Mauiva’s customer-support staff is available 24 hours a day by phone to assist tour guests, in guests’ native languages if requested.

At certain times of day and in certain light and wind conditions, sunlight falling on the spray from the Horseshoe Falls (and from the American Falls) creates beautiful rainbows

JetBlue Airways plans to introduce its Mint premium transcontinental service on its routes linking Boston with San Francisco, Los Angeles and Barbados.

New York-based JetBlue Airways also plans to launch new service linking Nashville with Boston (making the Tennessee city the 60th destination it serves from its Boston hub) and its U.S.-Caribbean hub at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport.

A JetBlue Airways Airbus A321 is photographed taking off from New York JFK

Additionally, JetBlue has decided to increase its service frequencies on 14 existing routes linking Boston with U.S. and Caribbean destinations.

JetBlue will start offering its Mint service between Boston and San Francisco from March 2016, with up to three daily round-trips. Bookings will be available on jetblue.com beginning on July 8.

The airline plans to launch its Mint service between Boston and Los Angeles in the fall of 2016, with up to three daily round-trips.

JetBlue plans to offer Mint seasonal service to the Caribbean beginning in March 2016, with a weekly Saturday round-trip between Boston and Barbados.

JetBlue Airways has introduced a new tailfin design, ‘Prism’, with the delivery of its first Airbus A321. The Prism tailfin design, JetBlue’s ninth scheme to be featured on more than one aircraft’s tailfin, is exclusive to its A321 fleet

The airline will operate all its Mint flights to and from Boston with new Airbus A321 aircraft.

JetBlue expects to begin serving Nashville International Airport (IATA code BNA) daily from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in the spring of 2016. Seats on JetBlue’s new route will be available for purchase this summer, according to the airline.

The carrier also plans to launch its daily Nashville-Fort Lauderdale service in spring 2016.

Connecting Nashville with Fort Lauderdale will play a part in the airline’s growth towards 100 daily flights at FLL, in order to meet increasing customer demand in South Florida, according to JetBlue, which expects to begin making seats available for purchase on the route this summer.

For the first 15 years of the airline’s existence, the Airbus A320 has provided the backbone of JetBlue Airways’ fleet in terms of numbers of aircraft operated. However, the airline is rapidly increasing the proportion of higher-capacity A321s in its fleet and by the early 2020s JetBlue will be operating almost as many A321s as A320s

JetBlue Airways will operate all its flights to and from Nashville with Airbus A320 jets.

The airline’s planned schedule expansion from Boston includes increasing the numbers of flights it operates each day to U.S. destinations Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, San Juan, Raleigh-Durham, New York JFK and Cleveland.

JetBlue also plans to operate additional weekend flights between Boston and Barbados, Aruba, Cancun, Turks and Caicos, Punta Cana, St. Maarten, and Liberia in Costa Rica.

JetBlue Airways unveiled this Airbus A320 in Boston Red Sox colors on February 10, 2012, saying the aircraft was the first officially to sport a Major League Baseball uniform

The carrier’s planned additional services linking Boston with Barbados and Liberia are subject to JetBlue Airways receiving required governmental operating authority for the flights.

In January 2016, JetBlue plans to offer an average of 118 daily departures from Boston in its winter schedule and up to 140 daily departures in its summer 2016 season.

The airline operated an average of 54 departures a day from Boston in 2008 when the airline began growing its presence significantly at the Massachusetts airport.

The Third Annual Harvest on the Harbor, Maine’s top food and wine festival, will be held from October 21 through October 23 at Ocean Gateway on Portland’s picturesque waterfront.

New events this year will include The Ultimate Seafood Splash, a spread of environmentally sustainable seafood samplings and savory wines, and The Perfect Pairing, an epicurean affair featuring gourmet hors d’oeuvres paired with matching wines to bring out the fresh autumnal flavor of these fusions.

This year, Harvest expands its scope to highlight some of the best wines on local chefs’ lists. Wines from all over the world will be featured, from large, state of the art wineries to small-production, handcrafted bottlings, some made from rare or unusual grape varieties.

Harvest on the Harbor showcases authentic and gourmet products from local farmers, fishermen, food artisans and wine, beer and spirit makers. Thousands have turned out for the event in past years, and People magazine named Harvest on the Harbor one of four “Great Ideas” for fall food fests.

“We are so proud that Harvest on the Harbor has earned a reputation as one of the best food and wine festivals in the country, and this year’s event will only boost that standing,” says Barbara Whitten, president of the Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau. “In addition to our traditional events, such as the signature Grand Tasting and The Maine Lobster Chef of the Year Competition, we’ve added new events that will enhance the experience and celebrate what makes Maine a true culinary destination.”

In 2010, Harvest on the Harbor, Maine’s premier food and wine festival, is being held from October 21 to October 23. The festival promises a new and expanded list of events

The 2010 Harvest On The Harbor events include:

● The new Ultimate Seafood Splash, will be held Thursday, October 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Ocean View Room at Ocean Gateway. The tastes of savory smoked salmon and locally harvested oysters from Maine’s fabled “blue thumbs” will be complemented by an assortment of wines from around the world;

● The Grand Tasting on the Harbor, which sold out last year, is slated for Thursday, October 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the Ocean View Room at Ocean Gateway. This amuse-bouche (pleasing to the palate) event features the region’s premier culinary talents, combined with a unique cross-section of local and international wines. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with esteemed chefs and beverage connoisseurs;

● The Maine Lobster Chef of the Year Competition, sponsored by the Maine Lobster Council, is scheduled for Friday, October 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Ocean View Room at Ocean Gateway. Three Maine finalists, chosen by a distinguished panel of judges, will prepare their best lobster recipes, and attendees will have the opportunity to taste all three dishes as part of a four-course lunch (along with dessert by Wicked Whoopies) then vote for the winner. Last year’s Lobster Chef of the Year winner, Mackenzie Arrington, will represent Maine at the Great American Seafood Cook-off in New Orleans in August;

● During The Perfect Pairing, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22 in the Ocean View Room at Ocean Gateway, National and local celebrity chefs and fine wineries showcase an event where attendees experience cooking demonstrations, learn tips, techniques and expertise from food and wine professionals; and

● This year, due to popular demand, there will be two sessions of the Savory Samplings at the Marketplace (the food and wine marketplace) on Saturday, October 23 from noon to 2:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. More than 140 food artisans, epicurean purveyors, cookbook authors and Maine-made products will be available at the expanded Oceanside Pavilion along Portland’s waterfront. Grilling and baking demonstrations will be presented throughout each session. A coffee cafe and live music stage will also be featured this year.

AirTran Airways is outfitting all of the 138 jets in its mainline, all-Boeing fleet with seat-back advertising.

By early December, every seat in every AirTran mainline jet will be outfitted with a 2.5-by-9-inch, easily changeable, full-color advertisement. Mother Nature Network is AirTran’s first advertising partner, offering a chance to win a seven-night, deluxe cruise onboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.

“We are pleased to be able to offer exclusive deals and other promotions to our customers through this unique medium,” says Tad Hutcheson, AirTran Airways’ vice president of marketing and sales. “We have gone to great lengths to present these advertisements in a tasteful, unobtrusive way that we believe customers will enjoy.”

AirTran says the new advertising method will increase ancillary revenue for the company and joins existing onboard advertising. This includes GO, AirTran’s in-flight magazine; seat-pocket advertising; advertising on catering items such as napkins; and announcements by flight attendants.

Unlike other in-cabin advertisements, the seat-back messages will be fully visible to passengers throughout the boarding, taxi, takeoff, landing, and deplaning phases, exposing passengers to advertisements for periods ranging from a minimum of approximately 40 minutes to several hours depending on the length of the flight.

AirTran Airways is installing advertising plaques on the backs of all the seats in its mainline jets. Each AirTran passsenger will be exposed to the advertising for the entire duration of his or her flight

“The fact that AirTran offers Wi-Fi on every flight, combined with this new and innovative advertising platform, convinced us this was a perfect marketing opportunity for an online brand like ours,” says Joel Babbit, CEO of Mother Nature Network. “To communicate our message to every passenger, on every flight, represents real and immediate value.”

MNN, launched earlier this year by Babbit and Rolling Stones keyboardist and eco-activist Chuck Leavell, is already ranked as one the world’s five most visited, non-governmental Web sites devoted to environmental news and information, according to AirTran.

The patent-pending, self-enclosed advertising system is provided by the OnBoard Media Group, an Atlanta-based, aviation media company and is in use by more than 10 airlines worldwide, including Jet Airways in India and Air Arabia in Dubai. AirTran Airways is the first U.S. airline to install the FAA-approved advertising device.

AirTran Airways says it will have final approval of all ads and will ensure that offers and messages are consistent with the airline’s family-friendly atmosphere. The airline says ads can be changed in just minutes per plane, enabling frequent changes and new messages.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) will offer service to 200 non-stop destinations this summer, with the announcements of new service by American Eagle to Hermosillo and Zacatecas in Mexico.

The new flights, which begin in June, will give Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport a grand total of 200 destinations, 52 of them international and 148 of them in the U.S.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is the fourth-busiest airport in the world for aircraft movements and by 2013 was handling 58 million passengers annually. This aerial view of the airport looks over DFW’s showpiece new Terminal D towards Terminal B

In reaching 200 destinations, DFW joins a select group of airports with that distinction. These include Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss International Airport (MUC).

“Even with this tremendous achievement of 200 destinations, our airport still has plenty of room to grow and add more capacity,” says Jeff Fegan, DFW Airport’s CEO. “We are optimistic that DFW can continue to attract more air service in the coming months and years, particularly new international service, as we build on our mission to connect the Dallas/Fort Worth area to the world.”

DFW Airport says it has experienced an unprecedented expansion of air service in the past three years, adding seven new passenger airlines, three new cargo carriers, 14 new international destinations and 10 new domestic destinations.

This is a view from the control tower at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States and in the world

In addition to new flights from its hub carriers American Airlines and American Eagle, DFW has also welcomed new service from Virgin America, Qantas, Emirates, JetBlue Airways, Cayman Airways and AeroMexico in that time period, and will see the start of new service from WestJet later this year.

Another airline quickly building its network from DFW is low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines, which has added several new domestic and international destinations from the airport within the past year.

“The sustained success we’ve seen in adding new routes and destinations is a testament to the hard work of our air service development team in identifying opportunities and airlines that make a good fit for DFW,” says Chris Poinsatte, DFW’s chief financial officer.

An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 takes off at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the biggest hub for American and its sister regional airline American Eagle

“In most cases, the DFW team spends years building relationships with airline decision-makers and detailing the tremendous opportunity that the Dallas/Fort Worth market represents and the highly competitive cost structure our airport offers to airlines,” adds Poinsatte.

DFW represents the largest hub and home base for American Airlines, and the largest airport hub in the oneworld Alliance network.

As a result, says DFW, it offers a high level of connectivity to passengers throughout North America, a major gateway point for international travelers to the United States and outstanding flight options worldwide to Europe, Mexico and Latin America.

DFW International Airport is the fourth-busiest airport in the world in terms of aircraft movements and the world’s highest-capacity airport. It has seven runways, five terminals and 155 active gates. DFW is also rated among the best large airports in the world for customer service, ranking in the top five in surveys by Airports Council International for five consecutive years.

DFW has prepared preliminary renovation sketches of how the exterior and interior areas of its original four terminals will look following the massive facelift they will receive under a $1.5 billion-plus, eight-year upgrade program that DFW’s board of directors launched in September 2009.
The airport is now building on its future with a seven-year, $2.3 billion Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program (TRIP) designed to modernize DFW’s original four passenger terminals.

Located halfway between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, DFW International Airport offers 1,900 flights per day and serves 58 million passengers a year.
