What You Need to Know ✈️

Southwest Airlines is making a big change — and it’s one you’ll want to know about if you fly with them often. Starting January 27, 2026, the airline will introduce assigned seating (farewell, open boarding!) and simultaneously update its long-standing “Customer of Size” policy.

So, what’s changing?

Until now, plus-size travelers who didn’t fit comfortably within one seat could request an extra seat at the gate and often got it for free (or refunded later).

From 2026 on, things get stricter:

• You’ll need to buy a second seat at the time of booking if you need the extra space.

• Refunds are possible, but only if the flight wasn’t full and you request it within 90 days.

• If you don’t pre-book and the flight is sold out, you might be rebooked on a later flight.

Why the change?

Southwest says this update aligns with their move to assigned seating, which starts on the same date. It’s also part of streamlining how they handle refunds and boarding.

What travelers are saying

Some view the change as less flexible and more costly, while others think it offers better clarity about what to expect. Either way, it’s a move away from the airline’s well-known “friendly” approach.

✈️ Bottom line: If you’re planning to fly Southwest after January 2026 and know you’ll need extra space, book both seats in advance — and don’t forget to check the refund rules in case your flight isn’t full.

According to expert travelers, overpacking is the most common mistake made by first-time travelers.
More

Overpacking is the number one error most first-time travelers, according to experienced travelers. We want to be ready for any weather or event, but it doesn't mean we have to pack our whole lives into a bag.

We've compiled a list of the best carry-on packing recommendations to make your trip less stressful.

1. Select the appropriate carry-on bag

Many passengers underestimate the usefulness of their luggage and opt for any old carry-on that fits in the overhead bin. When picking the ideal style of baggage for carry-on travel, however, numerous things must be taken into account.

You must first determine the size of your bag. Because size restrictions differ by airline, you should always double-check with your individual airline to ensure your carry-on meets the bill. It's fairly unusual for local and international airlines to have differing size limitations.

Next, you'll need to choose the appropriate bag for your travel. Backpacks are more convenient to tote while you're on the go. You won't be complaining about dragging a bulky bag up many flights of stairs or through narrow alleyways.

Backpacks are also soft-sided, allowing you to cram your belongings into every nook and cranny, particularly in overhead bins. However, you should not pack more than your back can hold, and you should avoid overstuffing it to avoid damaging the backpack.

Rolling suitcases, on the other hand, are more durable and put less pressure on your body. Hard luggage are frequently heavier than soft backpacks, despite the fact that they keep your belongings neat and organized. If you pick the incorrect suitcase, the bag may consume a considerable portion of your baggage weight restriction.

2. Use packing cubes or compression sacks.

Even if you're meticulous about packing just the essentials, you could discover that your carry-on is space limited. That's the perfect reason to use compression bags, and packing cubes.

Compression bags enable you to cram more into every available square inch. You stuff your garments into the plastic compression bag and squeeze out all the air until it's flat and crushed. This saves a significant amount of room and enables you to pack more into your carry-on.

Packing cubes are sturdy fabric containers that stack nicely in your luggage or backpack. All of your shirts, trousers, socks, and underwear will be sorted into individual cubes when you arrive at your destination. They won't save space, but their primary purpose is to keep your suitcase and clothing orderly.

3. Instead of folding, roll

It's the age-old question of whether to roll or fold your garments while packing.

If you're traveling with a carry-on bag and want to put more goods in it, rolling is the way to go. For putting more stuff into compact areas, the rolling approach is the best option. Clothing that are rolled are more compact and take up less room than clothes that are folded.

Fitting everything neatly into your carry-on is worth the additional time and effort. The rolling procedure also eliminates the annoying wrinkles that come with folding.

4. Use the airline's personal item allotment to your advantage.

Together with your usual carry-on luggage, most airlines let you to bring a smaller, personal item aboard. This item should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you and store your valuables, gadgets, and passport (Pro tip: Passports should never be kept in carry-on baggage, learn more here).

It's essential to have a personal item that you can use as a daypack when traveling. Tote bags small duffle bags, backpacks, drawstring bags, and carrying cases are all good options. Remember that you'll be hauling your second large carry-on around with you everywhere you go, so don't overpack.

Don't squander your personal item on a little handbag that can only store a few items. Instead, consider packing a small backpack or a big bag in which you may stow your purse.

5. Pack a week's worth of clothing

One week's worth of clothes is a fair rule of thumb to follow.

You won't have any trouble packing your clothing into a carry-on if you're just going for a few days. Packing the correct stuff for a journey longer than a week, on the other hand, may be more challenging.

If you're going to travel for a long time, just plan on doing laundry while you're gone. You can wind yourself washing filthy clothing in the sink if you don't have access to a washer or dryer. As a result, washable and air-dryable clothing should be prioritized on your packing list.

6. Layerable clothing is recommended.

Remember, you only have a carry-on bag, so you'll have to be picky about the clothing you pack. Bringing garments that can be layered is the key to packing light.

Multiple layers will not only take up less room in your backpack than one large coat, but they will also keep you warm in a variety of settings and provide you with additional clothing alternatives.

This is particularly true if you'll be visiting several climates. When it's warm, wear lighter clothes like tank tops or T-shirts, and when it's chilly, layer up with sweaters and mid-layers.

Leave the heavier jackets and dense knit sweaters at home. They're most beneficial in the situation.

7. Select the appropriate toiletries

Many passengers are aware that having a full-size shampoo or any other liquid in a carry-on luggage is prohibited. Besides that, there are a few more pointers that even the most seasoned tourists would appreciate.

If you're staying at a hotel, it's a no-brainer to use the shampoo, conditioner, and lotion offered. If you inquire at the front desk, most hotels will provide complimentary toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and shaving cream.

Solid products, such as solid soap, sunscreen, and laundry detergent, are another choice. They are often small and do not come within the TSA's liquid category. You can also purchase solid cologne bars so you don't have to lug along big glass bottles when you travel.

If you're short on space, just leave the toiletries at home. You may buy any other essential necessities when you arrive, as long as you have your required medicine, contacts, glasses, and so on, at least in most places.

8. Select your footwear carefully.

It's not simple to choose the proper pair of shoes to bring on a trip. The majority of shoes are not only huge, but they also take up a lot of room in your carry-on.

The important thing is to wear shoes that are both versatile and comfy. It's easier said than done. But, nothing is worse than developing blisters on your first day and having to wear the same shoe for the remainder of your vacation.

Two pairs of shoes should enough. One pair is suitable for strolling or trekking, while the other may be dressed up or down. Swap the second pair for flip-flops or sandals if you're going someplace tropical or warm.

Important, on the airline, you should always wear the heavier of the two pairs to save room in your luggage. In a moment, we'll go through more of it.

9. During check-in, wear anything you can.

Wearing as much as you can while in transit is one of the best carry-on packing ideas. The weight of your belongings does not count towards the airline's weight restriction! You may save a lot of room in your suitcase by wearing your heaviest jacket, shoes, and sweaters.

You can always pull it off once you're aboard, but keep in mind that flights are notoriously frigid, so this method does double purpose.

When going to a colder area and need to pack a big coat, this strategy comes in helpful. Avoid the hassle of cramming a puffy jacket into your baggage by wearing it on the aircraft.

You should be an expert packer by now, ready to take on the world of carry-on-only travel! We're certain that if you follow these space-saving strategies and restrictions, you'll be able to fly with only a carry-on bag. You'll not only be free of the weight of a hefty luggage, but you'll also be free to go wherever your voyage takes you.

Remember that you're not carrying less, but more efficiently.

Reclining Seats in Economy Class: Proper Procedures and Etiquette

While you are anxiously waiting for the plane to take off, you are sitting in the uncomfortable seat provided by the airline when the passenger in front of you reclines their seat all the way back. When you least expect it, the amount of room you have becomes constrained, and you can't help but feel a little bit annoyed.

When traveling by airline, is it ever OK to lean back in your seat?

And if that's the case, when do you think would be the best time to do it?

Airplane seating is becoming a bit tight, right? Airline seats in economy were 25 to 34 inches apart in the early 2000s. However, by 2019, those seats have shrunk to 30 to 31 inches apart, and even 28 inches for short-haul flights. The seats themselves were reduced in size from 18.5 inches to 17 inches.

While passengers have little control over the changing architecture of flights, a new dilemma has arisen concerning how we treat our fellow passengers: Should you, or should you not, recline your seat?

It's a debate that has long polarized the internet, with some arguing that you should be allowed to recline in the seat you paid for, while others believe it's an insult to flying etiquette.

Airplane etiquette dictates that you only recline when absolutely required, and that you only recline a small amount to acquire the comfort you need without intruding too much on the person behind you.

Because airline chairs are built to recline, it is very fair for passengers to do so. However, the manner in which you recline makes all the difference.

So, what should a traveler do? Here are a few things to think about.

Consider the kind of flight you're taking.

It may be better to avoid reclining on a short daylight flight. Because many passengers may be on a commuting trip and working on their computer, the tray table may be down and coffee may be pouring, making a reclining seat in front of them a possible catastrophe.

However, if the travel is overnight, it's difficult to argue against the opportunity to recline. Many folks will most likely be trying to get some shut-eye so they can feel refreshed when they arrive. A solid rule of thumb is to do it early and with advance notice.

Before you relax, check behind you for hot drinks or computers. If there is something that might constitute a threat. Turn around and tell them you're going to recline your seat.

Have you ever boarded a plane and wished you were seated in the first class section? Everyone has been there. For those who don't have the cash to spend on pricey aircraft tickets, there are a few alternatives.

Here, we explain how to get free upgrades on local and international flights, as well as dispel some popular misconceptions regarding the procedure.

How to Get a Domestic Flight Upgrade

On domestic flights, major airlines brand their premium cabin as "first class," and these are often roomy armchair-like seats on narrow-body aircraft.

Earning elite airline status is the greatest method to gain a free upgrade to first class. All of the major airlines provide complimentary upgrades to frequent flyers, but it is not on every route.

If you have elite status with your airline, just request a free upgrade for your ticket before your trip or when you check in.

Upgrades are handed out depending on availability, and there is a set hierarchy for those restricted seats. Top-tier elites are ranked highest, although other considerations like as possessing an airline-branded credit card also play a role. Your free upgrade might become available at any time, from a few days before your journey to the moment you scan your boarding card. In certain situations, you may be summoned to the front after taking your seat in economy.

You can still get an upgrade if you don't have status, but you'll have to pay for it. If a first-class upgrade is available, many airlines will let you pay with miles instead of cash for the privilege of flying first class; in this case, the upgrade is free. Inquire at the airport counter if you're checking in to see if there are any paid upgrades available for your flight.

How to Get an International Flight Upgrade

The term "business class" is widely used by airlines to refer to their most luxurious cabins. There are certain airlines that offer a class that is even more luxury than business, which is confusingly referred to as "first class." Nonetheless, the chairs in all of these circumstances can be reclined.

Upgrades on foreign flights, in contrast to domestic flights, are quite uncommon. For the most part, most elites are not eligible for free upgrades to business class, save on select short-haul international flights to the Americas operated by several US-based carriers.

The only exception is for elites who get systemwide upgrades as a reward for their loyalty, and such certificates may be used to upgrade to business class on foreign flights, assuming there is room in the cabin. In certain cases, they may be transferred to other carriers.

Unless you have a systemwide upgrade, your options are restricted to cash or miles, which you may use before to your journey or at check-in, as is the case with domestic flights.

A few options are available if you are prepared to pay for an upgrade but are seeking for a good price. Passengers on certain airlines are allowed to bid for an upgrade prior to the trip, while on others, an agent at the airport may be able to provide substantial discounts on upgrades.

Several Reasons You Could Receive a "Surprise Upgrade."

First and business class seats may be available on certain flights when economy cabins are overbooked. A so-called "operational upgrade" may then result in some fortunate customers receiving a complimentary ticket to first or business class. However, these upgrades aren't given to random customers; instead, they are given to members of the airline's elite first.

Similarly, if your aircraft is overbooked and the airline is looking for volunteers to take a later departure, individuals prepared to do so may have some negotiation leverage to win an upgrade.

However, many first-time flyers make the rookie error of stowing their passports in their carry-on baggage.

There is just one big issue with this method: On fully booked flights, airlines may require customers to check their luggage at the gate in an attempt to speed up the boarding procedure. Those with heavier baggage may be compelled to leave their bags at the gate to create room in the overhead compartments. Prior to the start of this year, cheap airline Ryanair made it mandatory for travelers with basic prices to check their bags at the gate in Europe.

When passengers forget to bring their passports with them, they end up being in problems at the destination.

Traveling by plane may be a stressful experience. After all, you'll be carrying your baggage on board the aircraft, where it will be available to you in the event that you need it.

These passengers are at the mercy of airline and airport personnel, as well as border control officials, in this scenario.

Keeping your passport close at hand is a good rule of thumb. Passports should never be kept in carry-on baggage.

Taking your shoes off on a flight may be harmful to your health – here's how.

Wince the flight attendants, when they witness passengers roaming about barefoot on the plane.

Air travelers are aware of the several changes that occur in your body when flying in an airplane. Your ears pop, your taste changes, and it may be difficult to put your shoes back on after a trip.

There are several solutions to the last issue, but the best approach may just be to keep your shoes on the whole time. The rationale is less about compression and more about avoiding potentially unpleasant circumstances.

When flying for a long period of time, airlines typically provide socks to passengers in first, business, and economy comfort class in order to help them relax. Walking about the aircraft in your bare feet is not recommended for reasons of health and safety.

🛒 Shop the perfect socks to match your shoes on your next trip.

Typically, aircraft cabins are unclean. Cabins are cleaned before every trip, although that will be more perfunctory on a short turn when there are just 15 or 20 minutes to get it done.

That implies cabin cleaning might be as simple as removing rubbish from seatback pockets and swiftly washing down high-touch areas like bathroom doorknobs. Planes are cleaned thoroughly regularly, however this is not always the case. The frequency varies per airline, but extensive cleanings are usually done every four to six weeks.

Aside from such major cleans, carpets are often just vacuumed if time permits, and spot cleaned as needed. When anything is spilled, the cleaning staff will remove the stain but will not necessarily disinfect the whole area where germs may spread.

Worse, what about the liquids on the toilet floor? Flight attendants are not always compelled to clean them up in the middle of the flight, which means you might be walking in pee.

And while we're on the subject of germs, the tray tables and armrests are filthy. Tray tables are often the germiest surface on an airplane, so use those alcohol wipes to sanitize your area once you board. Don't put your bare feet up on them, albeit no passenger should ever do so out of respect for others.

Also, removing your shoes while flying might pose a safety risk. During takeoff and landing, keep your shoes on. In the case of an evacuation, shoes in the aisle may be a safety issue.

Keep your shoes on on a plane journey, even though it's tempting to take them off and relax. There are no etiquette regulations stating that you cannot remove your shoes while flying, but! 😉

Traveling is loads of fun—until you have to come home.

You’ve spent days or even weeks relaxing, sightseeing, and eating delicious things, but now you have to get back to real life. So how can you hold on to the memories of your trip?

One way is by turning your travel keepsakes into a fun product you can use or a beautiful item to display in your home.

For example, want to organize all your train tickets, receipts, and knick-knacks from your trip to South America? Create beautiful boxes for them that also add some pizazz to your living room. Looking for a fun way to keep track of the countries you’ve been to? Use a chalkboard travel map. Feel the need to keep a reminder of your recent trip to New York close by? Order a customized throw pillow made with the information from your boarding pass.

Not only do these creations bring back fond memories of your best vacations, but they can also serve as travel inspiration, reminding you of your love for travel and motivating you to keep saving money.

Here are four awesome ways to preserve your travel memories.

1. Travel keepsake boxes

We often come back from our trips with a lot of small loose items—coins, tickets, shells, and the like. We want to keep these and possibly even display them but we don’t know how.

One great way to both protect and display these items is through travel keepsake boxes. Head to a big-box store, craft shop, or even an antique store and pick up a wooden box. Buy some craft paint and adhesive letter stencils. Mix one part craft paint with two parts water and apply one coat on the box. Then, stencil on the name of the destination—and voilà! You have yourself a convenient way to hold these items and a lovely way to liven up your bookcase.

2. Chalkboard travel map

To track the countries or states you’ve been to and remind yourself of all the places you still want to see, create a chalkboard travel map. You can either buy a pre-made chalkboard map or make your own. To make your own, you’ll need to buy the materials; these include a piece of galvanized sheet metal, chalkboard spray paint, gel stain, and more. There are several websites that show you how to make a chalkboard travel map. Not only do these personalized travel maps take you back to fun times and motivate you to keep exploring, but they also make great wall décor!

3. Boarding pass throw pillow

Boarding passes represent one of the most exciting parts of your trip—getting on the plane—and thus all the anticipation and excitement that comes with the beginning of your journey. For this reason, they make fantastic souvenirs. Many of us want to keep our boarding passes, but we’re not quite sure what to do with them.

Consider creating a decorative product like a throw pillow with information from your boarding pass. In this way, you turn your flimsy boarding pass into a cute and useful household item. They also make great gifts for travel lovers!

4. Display your travel photos

If you love taking photos of your travels and putting them on various social media sites, go one step further and display them off the internet. In other words, print them out—just like they did in the old days (a.k.a. just a few years ago). They not only beautify your home but they are also a great way to preserve your travel memories.

We know how hard it is to come home after a great trip, and we also understand the importance of preserving your travel memories. Turning your photos and other travel keepsakes into decorations and practical items is a great way to protect them and remind you of some of your best travel moments. Don’t simply throw your travel memories in a drawer: turn them into a fun, useful product or beautiful decoration—either for yourself or as a gift to a travel companion or loved one!

Flight Attendants have all sorts of secrets including how they pack, what they eat, and they even have their own language.

Try listening in on your next flight and pick up on some of these key terms and phrases used by flight attendants and pilots.

• Bidding

Bidding is the monthly process in which a flight attendant submits their preferences in terms of their schedule. Flight Attendants can select specific trips they want, positions they like, and even days they would like off. Bidding is based on seniority within the company.

• Deadhead

The term “deadhead” is a bit odd since it had nothing to do with the actual meaning. In the airline industry, deadhead means to simply fly as a passenger for operational needs. If the airline needs you to be at a different airport, they will fly you to that airport to work a specific flight.

• Galley

The galley is also known as an airplane kitchen. The galley is where the flight attendants prepare the beverages and food for the flight.

• Miracle Flight /Jet Bridge Jesus

These are terms used for when elderly people need a wheelchair to board the plane but somehow they miraculously leave the aircraft without a wheelchair. Sadly, sometimes people abuse the system and use a wheelchair to board first and then just run off once landed.

• Crash Pad

A crash pad is a place that flight attendants use to sleep. Typically, several flight attendants could be sleeping in the same room with several beds lined up. A hot bed is when you pay just to use the bed for the night and a cold bed is when you have a permanent bed. Flight attendants use crash pads for when they do not live at their base.

• “Please prepare for departure/arrival”

The lead flight attendant usually makes this announcement once the boarding door has closed or before it is opened. This signals the other flight attendants to arm or disarm their doors. The doors are equipped with evacuation slides that will only work if the door is armed. Doors must always be armed before the plane leaves and disarmed before the door is opened.

• Cross- Check

Once the doors have been armed or disarmed, usually you will hear or see the flight attendants confirming that each door is indeed armed or disarmed. This is an important part in ensuring the safety of everyone on board and those opening the doors.

• Bulkhead

The bulkhead is the wall that divides the aircraft and is usually found in front of the first row. Usually the lavatory and the galley are located on the other side of the bulkhead. Sometimes this gives the passengers extra leg room but they must stow their bags since items can not block the emergency exit.

• Jump Seat

This term refers to the seat that flight attendants take during take off, landing, and turbulence. The jump seat will fold right up once the flight attendant stands.

• Redeye

Redeye is a term that simply means an overnight flight. This is basically the graveyard shift but up in the friendly skies. Some flight attendants struggles with these late hours while others enjoy it because most of the people are sleeping.

• Chimes

Listen for various chimes throughout your next flight and try to guess what they mean! There are high chimes, low chimes, and colored buttons typically in the ceiling that represents certain things. While it depends on the aircraft and airline, some lights and chimes go off when a passenger presses the call button, when the pilots call, when there is an emergency, when there is a problem in the lavatory, or when the flight attendants need to chat to one another.

Flying across the world, controlling a huge refined aircraft may be a dream for some. While it’s a rewarding and very exciting job, many people wonder how exactly does one become a glamorous pilot. The process takes time, dedication, and a good chunk of change. As long as you are committed, the dream of driving in the sky can be yours. There are several different ways one can become a pilot as stated below.

Basic Requirements

Getting a four-year college degree may benefit you in the long run. A degree is not needed to fly for a regional airline in the United States, but it is necessary for a major US airline. A Bachelor of Science is preferred with emphasis in aviation, but it's not necessary.

Obtaining your initial Class 1 Medical is required for anyone wishing to train for any commercial airline. Contrary to popular belief, you can fly for an airline while wearing glasses or contacts as long as your vision is corrected to 20/20.

Be well aware that becoming an Airline pilot is a huge financial investment. Make sure that you monetarily prepared and committed. Depending on where you chose to go to flight school, it could cost between $100,000-$150,000.

Flight School

Research and look around your local area for a good flight school and a flight instructor. You will now start working on your private pilot certificate. The current minimum flight time according to FAA is 40 hours. It may be desirable to complete 60 hours.

After earning your private pilot license, you can begin your instrument rating and your commercial certificate. For an instrument rating, you will need 50 hours as a pilot in command and 40 hours of simulated conditions. For a commercial certificate, however, you will need a total of 250 hours.

Now you will need to complete your certified flight instructor rating and begin working at the flight school. Pilots need experience to qualify for your license so working for a flight school is useful. To qualify for a FAA license, you must also be 18 years old and earned 250 hours of flight experience.

Get Working

With all the proper ratings and 1,500 hours of flight time, you are now eligible to work for regional airlines. In order to work for a major airline, you will need about 3,000 hours of total flight time.

Many pilots begin their career teaching as flight instructors as well. Other take on assignments with charter planes or end up going private.

Within airlines, pilots start off as a first officer and then advance to captain. Depending on your contract and airline, many pilots move up to captain within 5-10 years. Gaining seniority will also help with your flight assignments. Usually, you will start off as a reserve and be on call for flights while getting an actual schedule will help you organize a more structured life schedule.

Pilot Shortage

This might be the best time to get started on your license to become a pilot. The current projection is that there will be a shortage of pilots between 2018-2030. Many of these pilots will be needed in the Asia-Pacific area due to expansion plans with several airlines including the famous airline, Emirates. Pilots also have strict age and health requirements that force a large number of pilots to retire. Females also make up a very small percentage of pilots in general so airlines will be on the lookout.

It’s important to remember that the industry is still very competitive. Make sure to do your research and prepare as best as possible before beginning this new career. It will take time, effort, money, and commitment but it is definitely doable and will pay off in the long run.

Airport IATA Codes

The International Air Transport Association Location Identifier uses a unique three-letter code in order to identify the locations of airports around the world. You may find these codes listed while searching for flights online such as MCO (Orlando) or JFK (New York). These codes are also listed on your baggage tag during check-in at the ticket counter.

The headquarters located in Montreal, Canada administers the IATA codes. The codes are published twice a year in a special Airline Coding Directory. Interestingly, IATA also makes the codes for railway stations around the world. Railway companies such as Amtrak and Deutsche Bahn are available.

In the 1930’s, airport codes came along since they helped pilots identify the various airports. Pilots were originally using a two-letter code that the National Weather Service uses to identify cities. Some cities didn’t have a National Weather Service code, so the three-letter airport codes were established. A three-letter code allows for over 17,576 different letter variations.

Typically, airport codes are named after the first three letters of the city in which it stands for. For example, MEX represents Mexico City, SAN stands for San Diego, and DUS is for Dusseldorf. Some airports have the same letters within the airport code such as the following: FLL stands for Fort Lauderdale, EWR for Newark, and VCE for Venice. Within the United States, many airports used their old National Weather service code and simply added an “X” at the end. Some airports with their old National Weather Service codes are PDX for Portland and LAX for Los Angeles.

Oddly enough, many airport codes seem to not make much sense at all. Some airports include a mix of various regions and therefore include different letters. For example, DFW stands for Dallas Fort Worth Texas, BDL represents Hartford Connecticut but the airports name is Bradley International Airport, and MSP stands for Minneapolis Saint Paul. Many airports also have historic names, which coincide with their airport codes. MCO represents Orlando International Airport, but “MCO” is based on the old McCoy Air Force Base. SGN stands for Ho Chi Minh City but the airport code is named after the former Saigon city in Vietnam.

In the 1930’s, Canada also used the two-letter identification method from the weather station. Before the two letter code, a “Y, meaning yes, was placed in order to represent that the weather station was the same as the airport. A “W”, meaning without, would be located before the two-letters to represent that a reporting station was not located with an airport. The letter “U” means that the airport has the same location as the Non-Directional Beacon (NDB). The NDB is a radio transmitter as a specific location often used in aviation and marine navigation. Finally, an “X” was used if the two-letters were already taken by another Canadian airport and a “Z” is used if the airport code may be confused with a three-letter code in the United States. For example, YOW stands for Ottawa, YYC represents Calgary, YYZ is for Toronto, and YVR stands for Vancouver. Interestingly, many airports have initiated a specific branding method so that the name of the airport corresponds to the code. The Calgary airport has used their airport code in place of their official website “yyc.com”.

Although a pilot, flight attendant, or gate agent job is common and often times the face of aviation, it’s important to remember that there are different types of positions within the aviation field. Every position within the airline industry has one thing in common: they keep our air transportation system safe. Since the Wright Brothers took flight in 1903, there are been significant strides in aviation and thus numerous jobs. Below is a list of the top 5 highest paying jobs in aviation.

Air Traffic Controller

In order to have smooth traffic in the sky, air traffic controllers ensure the safe operation of the nation’s air transportation system. They keep in contact with aircrafts in a specific area to track distances, directions, and other specifics to keep the traffic safe in the air. They may work in airport control towers or in an Air route traffic control center. An Air Traffic Controller averages $85,000 per year.

Mechanic

A mechanic provides a wide variety of skills that include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a plane. A mechanic may work on an engine, landing gear, breaks, or even a lavatory. Since this an extremely vital position in keeping our aircrafts safe, mechanics average $52,000 each year.

Inspector

Often times a mechanic will move up to become an inspector if they are on a positive track record. Inspectors have a great job security since they are required by FAA to inspect airplanes after any repairs are completed. Essentially, an inspector keeps our air transportation system safe and is responsible for the safety of all who board an airplane. An Inspector may average $65,000 per year.

Air Marshal

An Air Marshal is highly trained to discreetly fly and provide in-flight security to counter any terrorist attacks in the event of a hijacking or extreme security incident. They typically travel in pairs, carry firearms, but are not present on every flight. An Air Marshal makes on average about $70,000 a year.

Pilot

A captain and first officer often times go through years of schooling and training to become licensed to fly. While many pilots have military training, others go through college and train at an FAA certified flight school. They are highly trained to deal with all weather conditions and emergency procedures. In the coming years, there is said to be numerous positions opening for commercial pilots. With an average salary of $100,000, they have the best seat in the air!

Although traveling to a new place may seem exciting, traveling via airplane can also bring out the worst in people. Complaints, pricey products, confined spaces, and fear of flying may trigger angst while flying. Flight attendants have absolutely seen it all in the air and are trained to deal with various situations. There are, however, annoyances that occur each flight that flight attendants simply wish customers would stop doing.

Touching, Poking, Grabbing

Every airplane has a call button that alarms a flight attendant that a passenger is calling them. Flight Attendants are also required to walk through the cabin every so often. So why do people think it’s okay to poke, grab, pull, pat, or touch a flight attendant? There are enough germs on an aircraft so please use your words!

Aisle Space

It must be exciting to sit in an aisle seat because you can now stretch your feet out or sleep with your head in the middle of the aisle. However, flight attendants regularly must walk up and down the aisle and push carts through the aisle. This is done the entire flight and even in the dark. We don’t enjoy being tripped or accidently hitting you with a beverage cart so keep your children, hands, feet, and heads in the seat.

Overhead Bin Space

When you purchase a ticket to fly, you are simply reserving a seat on an airplane that will get you to your final destination. The overhead bin space is for smaller suitcases and is a shared space. No, bin space directly above your seat is not for your computer or little purse.

“What Do You have?”

Flight attendants make an announcement directing you to the menu located in front of you yet every flight several customers ask the dreaded “What do you have” question. We have over 100 beverages and now you want me to verbally list them? Do you also ask a restaurant server what they have on their menu?

Toilet Troubles

It’s evident that flight attendants are not getting paid while the aircraft door is open. Even worse, we are not allowed to close the door and begin compliance checks until everyone is in their seat. So when a passenger decides that “the time is now” after boarding is complete, flight attendants are not getting paid for your smelly bathroom break and must wait. As the cherry on top, most jump seats are conveniently located next to the lavatories, so flight attendants are less than ecstatic that a customer decided a confined space on a plane was a better choice than a restroom in the airport. Yes, now we all sadly know what you did in the lavatory.

Walking Barefoot

Swollen feet is a common problems while flying longer distances, but choosing to walk barefoot in a wet lavatory is just simply unsanitary and frankly nauseating. No, that is not water on the lavatory floor.

Water For a Pill

According to FAA, airlines are prohibited from serving items while on the surface, taking off, and landing. In an emergency situation, service items may become hazardous while evacuating. So when a passenger boards the plane asking, “Water for a pill?”, we wonder what you were doing for the past 3 hours in the airport with no beverages.

Flight Attendant Training

Curious to know what's a flight attendant training like?
More

Flight Attendants are trained to ensure the safety of the cabin. Contrary to popular belief, the comfort of the passengers, serving drinks and food, and other responsibilities is something a Flight Attendant typically develops over time working in customer service rather than in training. Most airlines require you to be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma. You will be more competitive to various airlines with a college degree and if you are at least 21.

Becoming a flight attendant is no easy task and may take months or even years to finally get a contingent job offer, pass training, and finally start flying the friendly skies.

Most airlines will house their flight attendants in training at a hotel or on the training facilities property for 4-6 weeks in order to complete training. Some airlines will pay their flight attendants a stipend for the entire month of training and some may even provide food vouchers and uniforms. For one whole month, a flight attendant in training must be completed committed to the program in order to graduate and earn wings.

During training, one of the first things a flight attendant is asked to do is memorize their airlines airport codes. For some airlines, this could be hundreds of codes! Airlines will test on these codes as well as other crucial vocabulary during the first week in training. Soon after, flight attendants learn how to complete the safety demo. Depending on the airline, this will include instructing how to fasten a seatbelt, procedures to dawning a life vest, how to use an oxygen masks, and where the closest emergency exits are located.

Flight attendants will train on simulators that model the airline’s aircraft models. One of the most important job roles a flight attendant will train to do is to arm and disarm airplane doors. Flight Attendants must take a written exam as well as demonstrate proper procedures. They will also be trained on how to open and close aircraft doors.

With safety being the number one value amongst airlines, flight attendants are trained to use every piece of emergency equipment on board. They must memorize their locations and know how to perform safety checks to ensure the pieces of equipment are in working order.

A Flight Attendant has several job roles that many people are unaware of. They are trained to be firefighters in the air, to be babysitters, deal with unruly passengers, aid passengers in need of medical assistance, to perform emergency landings on land and water, how to deal with special needs passengers, and finally how to provide the best customer service with a smile.

A Flight Attendant must be flexible with the schedule and even with their base location. It can be a strenuous job since they are on their feet for hours, pushing and pulling carts, and losing sleep due to jet lag. It is a stressful and strenuous job at times with a side of glamour. The glamorous part is being able to fly all over the work on your flight attendant benefits! After all, becoming a flight attendant allows you to venture around the entire world!

Have you ever noticed the two letters or numbers in front your flight number such as BA for British Airways or DL for Delta? These two characters represent a specific airline. IATA Airline Codes are two letter characters assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to represent airlines around the world.

The International Air Transport Association is a trade association of the airlines in the world. There are a total of 278 airlines within IATA and it is headquartered in Montreal, Canada. IATA provides training services and consulting since they are quite crucial to aviation. For example, IATA largely standardizes HAZMAT in terms of dangerous goods that can and cannot be let on an aircraft. Flammable items, oxidizing, biohazard items, and toxic items are not allowed on aircrafts. IATA was originally formed in Havana, Cuba during 1945. Safety and Security are known to be the top priorities of IATA in the present day. IATA codes are based on the 1947 International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) identification codes. In 1982 codes consisting of letters and a digit were initiated as the present day three-letter code. Using three figures helped distinguish each airline as the airline industry continued to grow in the 1980’s.

There are certain combinations of letters such as “SOS” that are never used since they would add confusion to other important codes. Codes that begin with Y or Z are reserved for government organizations and a YYY code is used for operators that do not even have a code assigned.

Pan American Airways began in 1927 as the largest international air carrier from the United States. Being known as the founding member of the IATA prides Pan Am. The IATA code used was PA and the ICAO code used for PAA.

American Airlines, for example, began with the AA code as assigned by the ICAO in the late 1940’s. When IATA developed, it took over the AA code but in the mid 1980’s, ICAO took on the three-letter code AAL.

Southwest is represented by the WN code. Oddly, Air Namibia took on the SW code during a time when it used to be called South West Air Transport. Since the 1980’s, Southwest has attempted to negotiate a form of payment in order to take on the SW code; however, both airlines have never come to an agreement.

Lufthansa is Germany’s largest airline operating flights to 197 international destinations. The IATA code is LH and the ICAO code is DLH. Air Berlin is the second largest airline in Germany. Air Berlin has the AB IATA code and the BER ICAO code.

While many of these airline codes are quite common, there are a few interesting airline codes as assigned by the ICAO. Many of these airlines have gone out of business but a few of these airlines with funny codes are still flying. The code WTF represented West African Air Transport and is still going strong. BOO stands for UK based Bookajet Limited. Finally, Fly Europa Limited’s airline code is FEE, which sounds a bit pricey!

It’s no doubt that flight attendants have a sweet job that includes great benefits, travel opportunities, meeting new people, flexible schedules, and more traveling. The pros absolutely outweigh the cons of the job since earning a prized position with an airline is very competitive. However, as in any job, there are certain things that flight attendants hate about the job. Below are the most common things that flight attendants dislike:

Bad Pay

It shouldn’t come to surprise that flight attendants aren’t millionaires. In fact, new flight attendants typically make less than $25,000 per year. Since the pay is so low, many flight attendants even qualify for food stamps. Senior flight attendants may make between $40-$50 per flight hour. Yes, per FLIGHT hour. Flight attendants are not paid for their travel time to gates, delays, sits, boarding, or deplaning. They are only paid for their time once the door closes. Many flight attendants do get a few bills for their time, which is called per diem. Although the pay usually stinks, this is still a dream job for many people and there is a very competitive hiring process involved.

Odd Sleeping Pattern

Flight attendants definitely don’t work the typical 9-5 schedule. Many flight attendants work redeye flights one day and an afternoon flight the next day. Some flights are 12 hours long and that doesn’t include their time getting to the gate, boarding, or going to the hotel. Many flight attendants learn to make use of their time by sleeping when they can and sometimes that means sleeping through the day.

Irregular Schedule

Most airlines require flight attendants to bid for their schedule every month. They are awarded certain flights or reserve assignments based on seniority order. Some flight attendants that have a line work 130 hours while a flight attendant on reserve will only be guaranteed 75 hours per month. Their schedule can vary significantly due to operational needs and the season.

Bad Eating Habits

With an irregular schedule, come odd eating habits. Many flight attendants learn how to meal prep for 4 days at a time and pack a nice cooler full of good healthy food. However, many struggle to prepare food and therefore eat out at restaurants or snack on airplane food. Heating up food is always an issue as well as finding a fridge while on a layover. The struggle is real when it comes to being a healthy flight attendant.

Mistreatment

Customer service is never an easy job. Add hospitality to impatient and emotional passengers and you have a hard job. People fly for different reasons and sometimes flights don’t go as scheduled which adds fuel to the fire for many passengers. Flight attendants deal with all sorts of situations while working. There are rude passengers, many that don’t comply, a few needy people, or even violent customers fly.

Working Holidays

Many flight attendants struggle with missing holidays and special events. Especially new Flight attendants since they have no seniority and therefore no say over their schedule. Working during a holiday is also never an easy task for anyone in the customer service industry. Holidays are suppose to be a happy time but sometimes turn into a rough time due to stressed out and frankly rude passengers. Thankfully, many airlines now pay extra for their flight attendants that work major holidays. Senior mama’s usually get what they bid for so they can enjoy the family time.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look into Your Flight

Have you ever wondered what happens before your flight is ready to take off?
More

Many people know that there is always more than what meets the eye. This is true in many aspects of your life, but some of these moments are a little harder to spot than others, like what happens before you get on the plane and take off towards your destination. The following are some things that happen behind the scenes.

Closer Look at Flight Attendants

There is a lot that you do not know about the flight attendant's job. For one, flight attendants are paid under the flight-only policy, meaning they get their hourly rate when the flight actually starts. Think about that for a moment. This means that the pre-flight tasks you see flight attendants do are done for $1.50 an hour, which is almost free.

Asking your attendant to help you cram those bags into the overhead bins or help you find your seat are tasks these individuals are hardly getting paid for. It should also be noted that delays, cancellations, and layovers hurt flight attendants even more because they lose pay.

The job also requires you to deal with bizarre situations. Flight attendants have to prepare for any and all possibilities. Of course, some of them have dealt with irate passengers, but there is a lot more to tell.

For example, some passengers have tried to sneak in dead bodies to fly with them to their destination. This may sound odd, but transporting a dead body on a flight can cost up to $5,000, so it is understandable why this happens. As you can imagine, this situation puts flight attendants in a very uncomfortable position, not to mention how traumatic it could be.

Understanding the Luggage Process

Most regular folks do not know much about the "load plan," but it is a very laborious and involved plan that starts the moment you drop off your luggage. The luggage is weight, and that information is placed in a database that helps others figure out where to load this piece of luggage. It has to be in the right place on the plane to make sure the plane is balanced for the safety of everyone on board.

The plan does not end with strategically loading bags onto a plane. Everyone involved also has to be on top of missing passengers or where passengers end up sitting in a particular flight. Any little change in the position of a passenger could affect the overall balance of a plane.

Frequent flyers have probably noticed a time when rows of seats were left empty for some reason. Flight attendants may even instruct passengers not to sit in those seats. It may seem arbitrary, but the truth is that this is sometimes done to balance the plane out along with luggage distribution.

The Fueling Process is a big Deal

Fueling is a team effort and it is a complicated one. The captain of the flight plays a role in this process. This individual checks the manifest, which tells him or her how much fuel is going to be used to get to the destination and ensures that this amount of fuel is inside the plane. The pilot does this while going through the pre-flight checklist, which is quite lengthy and includes things like preparing to deal with turbulence if the weather is bad along the flight plan.

The airline's operations team is the group of people who have calculated just how much fuel is going to be needed throughout the day. The fuel is added according to the plan set out by this team, which is done to conserve fuel and save money. Now, fueling normally occurs as soon as the plan lands after a flight when the luggage is being unloaded. This is done because it can take some time to fully refuel a plane, but there are times when refueling happens at later stages though this could delay flights so it is avoided.

Sometimes, big tanker trucks are brought to the plane, which connect to the plane's fuel system. This is located under one of the wings of the plane. There are times when the plane is refueled using a pumper truck instead, which is done a little differently. The truck hooks up to a fuel hydrant, which is at the ramp. Once this connection is secured, the fueling specialist hooks up to the plane's tank and pumps the predetermined amount of fuel. The predetermined amount does include the additional fuel placed in planes just in case of an emergency.

Most passengers just worry about getting to their destination in time, but they do not consider all the things that those who serve them have to go through in order to ensure a safe and pleasant flight. It may be a good idea to consider some of these behind the scenes happenings before your next flight, so you can learn to appreciate these individuals a little more.

During takeoff and landing, many of us look out the window and see all sorts of lights, letters, and colorful lines on the runway. For the pilots, these lights and lines are just like a secret language that only the pilots need to know. The runway signs are needed for safety and for the development of aircraft technology.

An aircraft can be 70 meters wide! An aircraft is also quite long and heavy. While a pilot can usually see the wing tips, driving such a large vehicle can be quite tricky. Signs, lights, numbers, and colors all make driving an aircraft more efficient and safer.

Lines

Air Traffic Control keeps in constant touch with the pilots during takeoff and landing in order to form the most accurate and clean takeoff and landing. Lines painting on the runway help indicate when the pilots should touch down or take off. Most airports follow the same exact pattern as defined by the Federal Aviation Administration.

There is a blast pad, which looks like yellow painted lines or even chevrons. The blast pad is never driven on since it can’t even hold the weight of a plane. The blast pad will prevent a blast effect from happening just before the runway.

The runway begins where there are several thin, long, white lines. Just before the runway, you will see the yellow chevrons indicating the blast pad. Near the long white lines, you will see a number that goes from 1-36 representing the runway number. There may be a letter as well that indicates a runway that is parallel to another.

The aircraft touches down just after the number and letter. The plane lands right where the six white lines are painted. Adjacent to the six white lines are white triangles, which serve as visual aides for the pilots so that they can have an aiming point.

Colors and Lights

On every runway you will see red square signs. These let the pilot know that they are in a “holding position” or in other terms a stop sign. Typically the aircraft will be waiting to take off or taxi to the gate at this point. A black sign with a number on it corresponds to the amount of feet that are left on the runway. White paint is for the runway, yellow is for taxiing purposes, and red is for stopping points.

Lights are quite similar in that green lights up where the runway starts and red means stop or a no-go area. White lights are used to mark the approach area so that the pilot can aim for a nice landing.

Interestingly, in recent years many airports have been using LED lights on the runways. LED lights increase visibility and efficiency. However, many pilots have complained that the LED lights cause a blinding effect during landings.

Numbers

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, all letters and numbers must adhere to certain guidelines. These guidelines include being specifically proportioned. For example, the number”1” must have a horizontal tip at the top in order to avoid any confusion. Numbers and letters must be 60 feet tall except for the letters 6 and 9 which can be 3 feet taller because of the longer tail ends. Interestingly, if any lines or markings have been blasted a bit, the FAA requires the markings to be power washed so that the markings may be done again. The markings may never just be painted over since they might wear down and reveal conflicting information.

Nato Phonetic Alphabet

The Nato phonetic alphabet is comprised of 26 code words that represent the 26 letters in the English alphabet. These specific code words are widely used in order to improve communication when you must be clear.

The alphabet is to be understood by everyone regardless of his or her native language. The military, medical, retail industry, and the airline industry typically use this form of alphabet also known as the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). The phonetic alphabet is crucial to all pilots since it allows them to transmit clear messages to Air Traffic Controllers while flying.

History

In 1927, the first internationally recognized spelling alphabet was used by the International Telecommunications Union. British and American armed forces both had different spelling alphabets as well. The British used adopted the RAF radio alphabet while the United States used the Army/Navy alphabet that became known as the Able Baker alphabet. The following alphabet was used for civil aviation up until World War II:

Amsterdam, Baltimore, Casablanca, Denmark, Edison, Florida, Gallipoli, Havana, Italia, Jerusalem, Kilogramme, Liverpool, Madagascar, New York, Oslo, Paris, Quebec, Roma, Santiago, Tripoli, Upsala, Valencia, Washington, Xanthippe, Yokohama, Zurich

The United States began using the Army/Navy phonetic alphabet during 1941 in order to standardize the systems among all branches of the armed forces. The alphabet is known as the Able Baker. In 1951, civil aviation then adopted the Able Baker alphabet in order to have a universal coded alphabet. Over the years, problems were found and the final version was implemented in 1956. The final code words for the letters of the alphabet were decided on based on thousands of different comprehension tests that involved more than 30 countries. Pronunciation of the words may vary by country but to eliminate any further discrepancies’; recordings and posters are available by the ICAO. The following alphabet is what we currently use:

Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-Ray, Yankee, Zulu

International Civil Aviation Organization

In order to become a pilot, it is mandatory to learn the phonetic alphabet. English is also the international language used in aviation. Every tower must have at least one English-speaking controller on duty at all times. Interestingly, only the numbers 0-9 are used in order to reference runways, altitudes, and any other numerical terms. For example, for runway number 16, pilots will say “runway number one-six”.

Morse Code

Morse code is a kind of character encoding that transmits telegraphic information using a beat. Invented by Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph, a very skilled listener can understand the Morse code without special equipment. There are short and long elements to represent letters, numbers, and punctuation. While learning to understand Morse code, it is advised to not remember the dots and slashes but to remember the specific sounds instead. The speed of the coding is measured in characters per minute. Amateur radio operators currently use the Morse code. Pilots and air traffic controllers are usually familiar with the Morse code but don’t necessarily use it.

Located in Abuja, Nigeria, a house was constructed in 2002 with a 100-foot long plane and a 50-foot long wingspan. The house symbolizes a couple’s love for each other and the woman’s love of travel. The body of the plane features a kitchen and a computer room that provides a beautiful view over Abuja. Across the property, the couple built a small guesthouse, and two security booths also shaped like airplanes and control towers.

Located in New Zealand, the aircraft was previously used as part of a car dealership named “Aeroplane Car Company”. In 1990, McDonalds purchased the property that included the airplane and converted it into a dining area for guests. The plane has been painted in traditional McDonalds’ colors and writing. The DC3 will fit 20 people inside for a different dining experience. The cockpit is locked off to help maintain the aircraft, but enthusiasts are allowed inside for pictures. The plane was built in 1943 and used by New Zealand’s South Pacific Airlines during the 1960’s. The airplane was decommissioned in 1984 after flying over 56,000 hours.
