A High Court challenge to Fingal County Council’s enforcement notice to restrict night flights at Dublin Airport was adjourned mid-hearing yesterday to await the outcome of a planning decision that overlaps with key issues in the case.

Direct flights from Dublin to San Francisco resume with Aer Lingus

Dublin Airport welcomes the announcement from Aer Lingus that it will re-start its direct service from Dublin to San Francisco. From December 12, customers will be able to travel to the West Coast of the US.

Direct flights from Dublin to San Francisco will operate 4 times per week from December 12, 2021 to the January 12, 2022 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Two additional flights will operate a week prior to Christmas and post-Christmas, from December 16 – December 18 and December 30 – January 1 reconnecting family and friends between Ireland the West Coast of the United States ahead of the festive season.

From February 25, Aer Lingus will fly direct to San Francisco 4 times per week.

Re-connecting Ireland with the West Coast for the first time since March 2020, the direct Dublin to San Francisco route is hugely important for businesses in Ireland. San Francisco’s Silicon Valley is home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, with many of these companies having their European headquarters here in Ireland.

Home to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, charming Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz penitentiary, and eclectic mix of architecture and steep hills, San Francisco has long been a popular tourist destination for travellers looking to start their west coast experience.

Ryanair flight bound for Dublin Airport forced to divert back to London after mid-air emergency.

A Ryanair plane travelling from London Stansted to Dublin Airport was forced to make a sudden U-turn mid-flight on Thursday.

The aircraft is understood to have put out an emergency signal near Manchester not long after take-off.

It departed Stansted at 7.30pm but subsequently returned to the London airport later on Thursday night.

Ryanair said there was a "minor technical issue" with the aircraft which meant it had to return to its departing destination.

Emirates Airlines has confirmed that they are resuming their daily flight from Dublin to Dubai after a 'spike' in international travel from Ireland.

Starting on October 5, the route will resume and has now been optimised to allow for more connections to Asia and Africa.

According to Emirates Country Manager for Ireland, Enda Corneille, if demand continues to grow, Emirates will double their offering at Dublin Airport.

He said: "We are seeing significant growth in demand both into and out of Dublin since the lifting of travel restrictions in Ireland in July. During the early days of the pandemic, we were operating just two flights a week from Dublin, growing to four on the back of demand for our cargo business.

"So today’s news is a fantastic boost in confidence for international travel; it’s a welcome boost for the travel industry and for our customers.

"We are hopeful that the coming months will see the resumption of our double daily service from Dublin, which, for us, will be a return to normal."

Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe fell by 76% as almost 462,000 passengers travelling to European destinations last month.

UK traffic declined by 87% when compared to pre COVID levels as almost 118,000 passengers travelled to and from Britain in July.

Dublin Airport Welcomes First Direct Dallas Flight.

Dublin Airport is delighted to welcome American Airlines new daily direct service to Dallas Fort Worth.

The new route will be operated with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and will be Ireland’s first direct flight to Dallas, which is American’s largest hub for connecting traffic.

A total of 36.5 million passengers passed through the main Irish airports last year, an increase of 6.1% over the previous year.

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that passenger numbers increased last year in Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Knock and Shannon airports.

But passenger numbers decreased in airports in Connemara in Galway and Inishmore in Donegal.

The CSO said the five main airports accounted for 99.8% of all air passenger numbers, while Dublin airport accounted for 85.6% of all air passengers carried in 2018.

Meanwhile, over 8.4 million passengers passed through the main Irish airports in the fourth quarter of last year, an increase of 6.9% over the same time in 2017.

Norwegian to temporarily reroute Cork and Shannon passengers through Dublin Airport
The move is a temporary measure in response to the recent suspension of Boeing 737 MAX operations.

Norwegian has announced plans to reroute customers who had booked flights from Cork and Shannon airports through Dublin Airport for a 10-day period at the beginning of next month.

The move is in response to the decision of the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) earlier this month to ban all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from Irish airspace, meaning that these planes cannot fly to or from Ireland, nor can they fly over Ireland en route to somewhere else.

Hundreds of Irish passengers had their flights cancelled after the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) suspended the use of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in and out of our airspace.

The IAA made the decision following the two fatal incidents involving the planes which have killed 346 people - including Clare man Michael Ryan, who died in Sunday’s Ethiopian Airways crash.

In a statement, the IAA said: “The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has decided to temporarily suspend the operation of all variants of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of Irish airspace, in the light of the two fatal accidents involving the aircraft in recent months.

CORK air passengers face an anxious wait to find out if the decision to suspend the operation of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of Irish airspace will affect the Cork to Providence transatlantic route.

The decision was made by the Irish Aviation Authority in the light of two fatal accidents involving the aircraft in recent months, including the Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday.

Flights between Cork and the Rhode Island airport, near Boston, are set to resume next month and operate three times per week across the summer months.

The route provider, Norwegian, announced yesterday that it would not operate any flights with Boeing 737 MAX aircraft type until further notice.

Dublin Airport Sets New Passenger Record

Dublin Airport welcomed a total of 31.5 million passengers during 2018, setting a new record for the airport.

Passenger numbers were up 6%, as the equivalent of more than five times the population of the island of Ireland used Dublin Airport last year. An additional 1.9 million passengers were welcomed at the airport during 2018.

About 29.4 million people started and ended their journey at Dublin Airport last year, while a further 2.1 million passengers used the airport as a hub. Short-haul traffic increased by 5% to 26.5 million, while long-haul passenger numbers increased by 15% to 5 million.

Traffic growth was underpinned by a strong performance from transatlantic and other long-haul routes, coupled with healthy growth in continental European traffic and the continued expansion of Dublin Airport as a significant gateway between North America and Europe.

“Dublin Airport enjoyed its eighth consecutive year of passenger growth in 2018 and I’d like to thank the travelling public, our airline customers, our staff and the staff of all the other companies at the airport for helping to generate yet another record year,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison.

“Dublin Airport is a key economic engine for Ireland and last year’s traffic growth helped deliver a record year for Irish tourism, bringing additional jobs and tourism spending throughout the island,” Mr Harrison added.

“Dublin Airport’s record passenger numbers also boosted Irish trade and exports and helped facilitate greater levels of foreign direct investment in Ireland and by Irish companies overseas. Air connectivity is essential for the Irish economy and the provision of new and expanded services at Dublin Airport benefits the entire country.”

Continental European traffic, which is Dublin Airport’s largest market, increased by 7% last year, as almost 16.3 million passengers took flights to and from continental European destinations.

UK traffic increased by 1%, with almost 10.1 million passengers travelling to and from UK airports last year. UK traffic growth has been sluggish for the past two years due to the weakness of sterling amid concerns about the impact of Brexit on the UK economy.

Transatlantic traffic increased by 16%, as Dublin Airport recorded more than 4 million annual passengers on North American routes for the first time. Transatlantic traffic has doubled since 2014. Other international traffic, which includes flights to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, increased by 17% to just over 1 million.

Dublin Airport continued to strengthen its position as a key gateway between Europe and North America, with transfer passenger numbers increasing by 18% to 1.8 million last year. A new €16 million dedicated transfer facility was opened during the year, to help expand this business. A further 240,000 passengers transited through Dublin last year – i.e. they passed through the airport but did not change planes.

The new control tower at Dublin Airport will be the country's highest occupied building when it is completed in two years time.
The tower is just under 87 metres tall - nearly 60% higher than Liberty Hall in the city centre.
Construction of the tower is necessary to cater for a second runway at the airport.

The tower itself is scheduled for completion in 2020, which the northern runway is due to be completed in 2021.

Construction of the tower, which dwarfs the existing control tower at the airport, is estimated to cost €50m.

Dublin Airport welcomes American Airlines’ announcement that it is to operate a new Dublin-Dallas Fort Worth summer service from next June.

The daily service will be Ireland’s first direct flight to Dallas, which is American’s largest hub for connecting traffic. It will improve connectivity from Ireland to Texas and also to a large number of onward destinations in the United States and Latin America.

“Dallas is an excellent addition to the existing route network from Dublin Airport and we’re delighted that American Airlines will be serving this market with a daily summer service from next year,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison. “This new route will further grow tourism and trade between Ireland and the US, and we look forward to working closely with American to promote the new service on both sides of the Atlantic,” Mr Harrison added.
