Airsoft is an amazing community that one can easily join. There aren’t a lot of barriers to entry but there are some common mistakes you see with new players from time to time.

Here are the five biggest mistakes that new airsoft players make.

Sniper as a First Gun

It’s pretty common for those new to airsoft to go the sniper route, but this is also one of the most common mistakes for several reasons.

Sniping in airsoft is nothing like sniping in the real world. Airsoft sniper rifles don’t shoot very far, BBs can be disrupted by leaves, and often an airsoft sniper rifle isn’t any more accurate than any other airsoft rifle. Good airsoft sniper rifles are also expensive and have a slower rate of fire.

Real sniping can be quite tiresome as it involves a lot of patience and stillness. And there is no guarantee that you get to snipe anyone.

Trust me, it's a lot more fun to run and gun than to snipe. If you want some extra range and a sniper-like role, look into being a designated marksman.

A DM moves with a regular squad but may hang back in a firefight to make well-placed shots. In a pinch, they can instantly swap to a normal infantry role and start laying down fire.

Accessorising Too Much

It’s a lot of fun to have a rifle that can accept accessories. It’s very tempting to slap everything you possibly can on a rifle and roll with it. This includes an optic, a laser, flashlight, bipod, angled foregrip, and more.

While some accessories can be handy for some roles, they aren’t always needed. They tend to increase the weight of your gun and increase its price too. Before you begin slamming accessories on a rifle, examine how you play.

• Are you in the prone position a lot? If not, a bipod is useless.
• Do you play at night? If not, the flashlight is useless.
• Can you see and use the laser?

You see where I am going here? The two accessories I’d recommend are a good sling and a decent little red dot. The red dot is optional.

Not Focusing on Physical Fitness

Airsoft is an action sport. It requires a lot of moving, shooting, sprints and more. If you want to be a serious player, it’s good to be in shape. You need to be able to transition between multiple shooting positions rapidly.

Being healthy and physically fit isn’t just important to be a good player, but also to avoid injury. This includes little injuries like pulled muscles and more severe tears and pulls.

You are likely going to be playing outside and in the heat. If you aren’t in solid shape, acclimated, and eating and drinking healthy, you can sustain a heat injury. This includes heat stroke which can put you in the hospital.

Remember to focus on your physical self to be a safe and be and efficient player.

Not Spending Enough on Your First Gun

I’m a big proponent of spending wisely on your first airsoft gun. I’d never recommend some high-end 700-dollar gun to a newbie.

At the same time, I see new players investing in no name airsoft guns sold at flea markets and dollar stores. These guns are often junky Chinesium that usually break and fail. This frustrates new players all around and often turns them away from the sport.

One of the best beginner guns is the G&G Combat Machine M4. It’s affordable, reliable, and widely available. Spend about $100 to $200 on your weapon. There is a very simple saying we use, “Buy once, cry once.”

A good rifle is all you need to begin playing airsoft. Then after some time, you can get a handgun or even invest in another primary weapon. Starting with a rifle allows you to experiment with different roles and learn how the game is played.

Know Your Batteries

Batteries in AEGs can be finicky. You have to take care of these systems, and the cells are sensitive to neglect and abuse. Here are a few things to remember about AEG batteries.

• Only charge them for the recommended time.
• While playing, swap batteries if one becomes hot.
• Take the battery off the charger if it gets warm.
• Remove the battery when you’re done playing.
• A smart charger is an excellent idea if you’re absent minded about batteries.

Five Simple Rules

These five simple mistakes are easy to avoid so you can make your entry to airsoft smooth and easy.

It is important that when you make a mistake, learn from it. Never be afraid to ask questions. Airsofters are some of the friendliest people out there and most are more than willing to lend a hand when they can.

Airsoft gun maintenance is important for keeping your kit in prime condition; here’s a quick guide to some basic maintenance and cleaning.

Airsoft guns can take a battering during a skirmish; this is something which is fairly unavoidable. Crawling through muddy forests can take its toll on your beloved rifles, so giving them some TLC is important.

Knowing how to keep your airsoft gun clean, which ammo is best to use and how to unblock them are all key to keeping your guns in good condition.

With this in mind, here is a quick guide to airsoft gun maintenance, which should help you to keep your kit in prime condition.

Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your airsoft gun, it is important that you steer clear of strong cleaning products. These can damage the exterior of the weapon, stripping it of its paintwork and potentially damaging the delicate mechanisms that keep it firing. To keep it clean, you should only need to use a soft, damp cloth and a bit of elbow grease!

The exterior of airsoft guns will only require minimal cleaning, but the barrel is one of the most important parts of the gun and will need fairly regular attention and lubricating.

To properly clean the barrel, spray a small amount of 100% silicone spray onto a cleaning patch on a cleaning rod and insert into the barrel AFTER you have turned off the hop up. If the hop up is on, you can damage it, and the cleaning rod can become stuck.

In fact, it is better for the barrel if you completely remove it from the AEG and hop rubber. However, this can damage the hop rubber if done improperly or too often; it is not recommended to do this every time or if you are not completely confident in what you are doing.

When it comes to cleaning the barrel, use a back and forth motion, and then remove the cleaning rod. Once you are satisfied it is clean, attach a new, dry cleaning patch to remove any excess residue. Once the patch comes out clean, test fire the gun and re-set your hop.

Note - If you wish to perform maintenance on the interior of the gun’s gearbox, it is strongly recommended that you use a professional, as doing it yourself could result in damage to the gun or the risk of voiding the warranty.

Ammunition

Only use high-quality BBs, as poor-quality brands can damage both your gun and the barrel. High-quality airsoft guns are designed to use 0.2-gram BB’s or heavier. Any BBs lighter than this can jam or break in the gun, and cause over hopping and inaccuracy.

It is also important that you NEVER reuse your BBs, as they become deformed once fired which can contribute towards breaking your airsoft gun.

Taking Care of Magazines

Before you load your magazine, you should always check the user manual of your gun and follow their advice, even if you are the most seasoned of airsofter. However, there are a couple of general rules worth remembering:

• Keep your magazines and BBs away from dirt and debris. This will help to ensure no foreign bodies get stuck in/on them.

• Only use new, clean BBs. Dirty BBs or ones which have been fired before and are now deformed can harm the mechanisms of your gun, causing magazines to jam and potentially causing severe damage to your gun.

What to Do in Case of a Jam

Unfortunately, no matter how well you look after it, your gun will jam. When this happens, it is important that you know what to do. If a BB jams in your gun, you need to stop firing immediately. If you continue firing, it could lead to a broken gear or piston, which is a much bigger (and more expensive!) problem to fix.

Next, you should completely turn off your hop up and insert the reverse end of your cleaning rod (which should be angled) into the barrel with the angle facing the feed tube in the magazine well.

Turn the gun upside down, look inside the magazine well and gently move the rod inside the barrel. By doing this, you should see the BB pop out of the feed tube and then see the end of the cleaning rod. Test fire the gun, and if it sounds good, crack on! If not, or if there is more than one BB stuck inside the barrel which you can’t remove, cease firing again and get in contact with a professional.

Although frustrating, it is sometimes important that you leave it to the professionals, as you could cause irreversible damage by poking around inside the gun.

The Makarov is one of the latest pistols to come out of WE that I have been asked to test and review. WE have really upped the ante over the last couple of years with manufacture and quality control of their pistols, rifles and ancillaries. As most of their pistols are compatible with Tokyo Marui they have inevitably been benchmarked against the TM products which is never easy. Anyway on to my test results and review.

On opening the box you get the usual egg box type packaging which keeps everything in place and protected. In the box there is the pistol itself, magazine, manual and a barrel extension and silencer ( more on these items later). On close inspection of the pistol the finish is very neat and tidy with a matt black paint job and some basic trades and a couple of serial numbers. It’s not until you hold it you realise what a neat little unit this is. People with larger hands may struggle with this as the pistol grip is very short. The magazine is again very neat and tidy and possibly the smallest pistol mag I’ve ever seen.

Now stripping this pistol is quite different to the usual Glock or 1911 strip down and it’s a little bit tricky. Pull down the trigger guard then click the hammer back and push the slide right to the back and lift off taking care you don’t snag the slide on the fire nozzle. This then gives you access to a very basic set up with the barrel and hop unit still attached the lower. The hop adjustment is again totally different to any I’ve seen on a WE pistol. No wheel, just a little slider at the back of the hop unit which is very easy to adjust. Reassembly was just as tricky as the strip down so be careful.

So I filled the magazine with WE green gas and filled the magazine with the 16 bbs it takes, the bbs were the Nuprol ones. On firing the first thing I noticed was how snappy and crisp the blow back was as the slide had a very short stroke, it was also quiet. On the chrono test I got the usual 270-280fps with the mag at room temperature which is what we come to expect from WE pistols. Now this is where things got really interesting. As I mentioned earlier this Makarov comes with a barrel extension and silencer which both just screw onto the inner and outer barrels so no need to strip the unit. So I refilled the mag with gas and bbs and put it through the chrono, the results were astonishing. The fps had increased to 365-380 and I checked this at least three times and it was whisper quiet. So if you’re planning to skirmish this pistol I recommend using a low power gas like 144a. I got two bb reloads to one gas fill as the mags are very small in keeping with the design of the pistol.

This little pistol really puts a smile on your face when you fire it as it is very snappy and sounds great. It also looks very good especially with the suppressor fitted and the compact size makes it ideal for concealing at MILSIM events etc. The only down sides to this pistol that I can see are it’s compact size will put off people with larger hands and the strip down is a little tricky. But it’s certainly on my shopping list, Enjoy!

First sight in UK @ BAS 2015

Hiding away in one of the main gun halls and not even in the ‘airsoft village area’ the boys from Airsoft Action noted a few ‘hidden’ or possibly ‘disregarded’ airsoft gems on the SHIELD Firearms and Sights stand – to save them from being overlooked or missed a couple of them had a ‘repatriation’ to the Airsoft Action stand where they could be appreciated by airsofters.

This meant that the relocated Krytac Trident SPR and SDP was able to garner a lot of attention from airsofters visiting the Airsoft Action stand – these were possibly the first instances in the UK of these Krytac branded AEGs. The SDP was certainly getting a lot of attention, it just looks so different from other CQB type models. The guys at SHIELD Firearms and Sights stand still had the Trident PDW and CRB models on display and Ken Saville assured us that all these models should arrive in UK soon with distribution via SHIELD (for trade enquiries please contact ken@shieldpsd.com.

Checking these AEGs out (but keep in mind we didn’t fire them) the quality seemed spot on and well finished. I was certainly impressed.

First impressions:
Trident SDP
Compact design, lightweight and full metal with ambi fire selector and locking bolt with access to the numbered rotary hop unit with 15 settings. The battery is housed in the unique buffer tube. The AEG is fitted with a mosfet which should help protect trigger contacts and the receiver is stamped with the Krytac logo and each AEG is individually serial numbered.

Trident SPR
With a 14.5” barrel and a 13” free floating DEFIANCE keymod hand rail the player is spoiled for choice for custom options on this AEG. Again a rotary hop up with 15 adjustment settings accessed via the locking bolt. Batteries are held in the stock and you can use nun-chuck style or small lipo brick battery at the rear of the stock in front of the buttpad (or a stick battery in the buffer tube).

These were great looking AEG’s and appear well finished – initial thoughts on pricing are lower £200 bench mark for the SDP and upper £200 for the SPR – however these are only best guesses at this point.

It's not just the UK and other far flung places in world with airsoft events, news from the 'Emerald Isle' of an event taking place.

Name of Event: WARZONE AIRCON ALPHA

Address of Event: The Irish Military War Museum, Stamullen, Co Meath (www.imwm.ie)

Date & Time of Event: Sat 6th and Sun 7th June 2015. Gates open to public from 10:00hrs to 17:00 hrs

Details of Venue: Opened in County Meath on the 6th of June 2014, the Irish Military War Museum offers a fascinating insight into Irish participants’ involvement in both World War One and World War Two, as well as other military conflicts in world history.

The Irish Military War Museum, covering 5,000 square feet of floor space, represent’s a distinctly non-political but ‘must see’ educational and historical resource for people of all ages and from right across the island of Ireland and beyond.

By the time of the show the museum will have its own airsoft site which will be a huge attraction for airsofters attending the show. Short skirmishes will be run hourly to allow players to engage in games with players from all over the country and those attending from abroad. We will also have ‘firing ranges’ where the customers can get an introduction to airsoft and try their luck hitting the targets as well as airsoft rental replicas to also join in and take on others in a skirmish.

Rides in the museums armoured vehicles will also be an attraction we have set up for the show.

The Event: WARZONE is the first of a bi annual event aimed at combining Airsoft and an inclusive well thought out family day which would promote and combine all aspects of airsoft but also provide an exciting and diverse family event for all to enjoy. The ALPHA event planned will be zoned into areas of activity;

ZONE 1: This will be aimed at providing family activities such as ‘land zorbing’ a climbing wall, ‘archery tag’ as well as a bouncy castle, face painting and balloon sculpting for example. It will be located close to the museums existing playground therefore providing a choice of activities.
ZONE 2: The main area of the event will be allocated to general stall holders, airsoft suppliers and retailers as well as food and drink stalls. The aim is to integrate the airsoft and general stalls so not to exclude any group and provide an area of interest for those not yet aware of airsoft in Ireland and also to add diversity and interest for all those attending WARZONE.
ZONE 3: This will be designated for the sale and consumption of licensed alcohol as well as being a family quiet and picnic area. There will be limited catering stalls allocated to this area to provide food and drinks also.
ZONE 4: The museum has its own airsoft site called HELL VALLEY AIRSOFT which will be utilised fully to provide ‘skirmish’ games to airsofters as well as welcoming anyone to experience an airsoft game by renting airsoft AEG’s and safety equipment which will be available. As we are aiming this event equally between airsofters and the public, the chance for people to play a game will provide an activity which can be enjoyed by those who play regularly and those attending WARZONE and may possibly not have heard of airsoft before wishing to experience it for the first time.

Gunfire.pl have an interesting event starting this weekend - how do you fancy this?

The GFPOINT airsoft orienteering race is the only event in Poland – and one of only a few such events in the world – combining airsoft activities with orienteering (the so-called foot-O). Such an event allows to check the participant's general fitness, and navigation skills, as well as his knowledge and expertise in matters of general defense, military and survival, all that combined with more than just a slight touch of airsoft.

The event's military character is defined by the requirements the participants must meet in terms of clothing and gear, as well as the type of task which need to be completed during the run, which include – but are not restricted to – a shooting range, killing house, general military knowledge test, etc.

This year we have decided to set the limit at 300 participants, with an additional 200 staff and volunteers. Bringing together airsofters, military enthusiasts, security, law enforcement and military officers, mountaineers, tourists and foot oriented sportsmen.

In the upcoming 6th edition which will be taking place on January 17th 2015, the participants will once again face each other in the incredibly scenic areas of the Owl Mountains the oldest mountain range in Poland. Aside from the beautiful wild landscapes and very demanding routes, the area is covered with numerous objects, facilities and underground tunnels from the times of world war II, which seriously affect the incredible atmosphere of this event. Great start to
2015

2015... What a great start to the year or a brilliant end to 2014 depending on your perspective.

As many of you will know I've been producing this blog for a number of years now - bringing airsoft to players old and new since about 2007/2008. The blog as you know covers sites mainly North West Based (UK) as well as some news and of course tactical gear and airsoft kit reviews. We also cover some controversial topics that others cannot or will not speak out about. BUT the BIG news is that we've had a review published in the January 2015 issue of Airsoft Action Magazine.

The review covers the S.W.A.T. Airsoft site known as the FORTRESS, based in Liverpool. (Buy the issue to read all about this exciting venue of CQB goodness)

Here at the blog we love to see airsoft innovation at its best and the Kydex Custom made VTG and BFG holders definitely come under that category.

Produced by HW Holsters, who specialise in handmade custom holsters and anything else that you might need made out of Kydex, and now they’ve also introduced into their range of gear, holsters for the VTG and BFGx. As you’ll already know the VTG is the time delayed Versatile Training Grenade and the BFGX is the impact Blank Firing Grenade both produced by blankfiringgrenade.com.

Like many of their other holsters, these are available in a good variety of colours to compliment your kit, including black, olive, tan and hydro dipped multicam but please check the HW Holsters website for the latest info on finishes available. As well as colour availability you can also customise the attachments.

The VTG and BFG holsters I have, both have the malice clip options fitted, but you can opt for either the long or short variety, belt loops, Blade Tech Molle Lok and Tek Lok designs again check the website for availability. You could even just directly attach them to drop leg fitting via the supplied screw holes. With the supplied malice clips attachment to existing molle vest is easy and gives a variety of options that I was more than happy with.

In use I have no problems with the grenades in these holsters, some people expressed concern that they could fall out too easily, but honestly myself and others that use these regularly have had no problems with this happening at all. Fitted correctly via the malice clips they functioned really well and gave excellent quick access to the BFG or VTG when called upon. We tried to make the grenades fall out by running up and down stairs, jolting them and whatever else we could think of to do, under normal use I don’t see these being dislodged easily. The Kydex has just enough spring in it and has taken loads of fitting and pulling out of the grenades than I have counted and it’s still going strong 2 months later without showing cracks or any sign of breakage. The website does warn you about leaving in extremely hot cars as this will affect the Kydex.

The guys over at HW Holsters now produce these great bits of kit to cover other grenades on the market such as the GR20, M203 shell, TMR and Tornado Impact grenade. Plus check the website for pistol and magazine holsters with loads of custom options.

Yosser says: Great kit from HW Holsters, really impressed with the fit and finish of these Kydex holsters and I’ve seen some of the pistol holsters these guys produce, truly impressed! Some Kydex produced stuff has a ‘home made roughness’ to it. Not so this gear – it looks professionally made and produced with attention to detail and a nice range of options available. Ever since the USA ‘outsourced’ warfare to Private Military Contractors, the now acceptable face of mercenary work, airsofters have followed the trend and load outs have followed too. There was a time when MERCS used and wore all the available surplus kit they could get their hands on but as the trend has changed to PMCs so has the fashion and kit available to these highly paid and highly deniable ‘forces’ available to Govts, private corporations and people with the means to pay for the ‘protection’.

So as the cash is good in this line of work many of the PMC load outs will incorporate the great & good in a mix and match of military and civilian gear, although some military gear is not for official sale or use by civilians and many PMCs want a more low key and less military look to their kit, PMCs often go for rugged use outdoor gear or as the ‘private’ sector has grown many manufacturers specifically cater now to this market. For airsofters to get this look is relatively easy by mixing and matching kit you may already have or is easily acquired.

For research just check out what many of the operatives are wearing ‘in country’ from the many pictures available via a quick internet search – but you will notice recurring brands and designer labels, with the likes of 5.11, Oakley, Blackhawk, Magpul to name drop just a few commercially available brands.

I checked out a leading UK based website for gear that stocks many of these popular brands – POLIMIL http://www.polimil.co.uk/ - these guys are suppliers to Police, military and security forces and have a good range of everything needed for this kind of load out (or other gear suitable for airsoft or outdoor use).

In the picture which goes with this article I’ve combined genuine Oakley Sunglasses – although you may want to ‘swap’ for your usual eye pro or shooting glasses in game, with a Blackhawk polo. The polo seems to be pretty standard wear but if you can hold of a genuine ‘Blackwater’ polo or other PMC branded polo or shirt kudos to you. I like the Blackhawk polo it is extremely comfortable to wear, has a handy sleeve pocket just big enough for an ipod nano and even has a pass through for the wired headphones and a microphone clip below the centre placket. In hot weather it’s a very easy polo to run out with due to its moisture wicking abilities. Of course you may want to use a standard plate carrier or some of the lighter rigs available but that’s pretty much down to personal choice and of course how you want to rig it out with pouches and accessories. It should be noted that 5.11 does an excellent polo with microphone clips like this one but also additional clip points on the right and left shoulder points.

In the load out pictured I’ve used a standard sling but many will go for the Magpul MS variety slings, again maybe use what you've already got or suits the weapon you’re using. Many PMC’s use M4’s (or variations) with the AK also being popular although some are tricked out with tactical options. Talking of weapon choices I’ve teamed up a Fobus rotating paddle holster with my 1911 pistol as this allows for the cant of the holster to be adjusted, again down to personal choice and side arm (see review). If you’re sporting a plate carrier you may wish to attach any holster to that.

For trousers I’ve gone with 5.11 Tactical Stryke trousers, available in a variety of colours and a good range of sizes these are comfortable and cool to wear. I like the styled cargo pockets which are situated slightly higher and contain inner areas great for holding spare magazines and they are securely closed with Velcro with some nice detailed 5.11 logos on the pocket flaps. The side pockets are low profile and provide for quick access to deep pockets. The trousers can even accommodate interior knee pads should they be needed. Movement in these wasn’t an issue due to the material and construction using what the makers call Flex-Tactm. This lightweight, breathable, poly/cotton ripstop incorporates stretchable yarns resulting in what is a truly great pair of trousers which despite some mucky situations and numerous washes have retained their colour. These are so good I think I’ll be getting some more for casual wear.

Footware is of course extremely important; I’m wearing Magnum Stealth Force side zip boots but many opt for what I call the ‘tactical training shoe’ or walking shoes; again personal preference or re-use what you may already own to keep costs down.

As for other accessories the sky is the limit, tactical/military watches, gloves (I’ve used the Oakley SI gloves I’ve had for some time now and still going strong(see review)) it’s all about what look you’re going for.The beauty of this style is nothing is really right or wrong, mix and match, experiment and conjure up a look you’re comfortable playing airsoft in, reuse some of that kit that maybe sitting at the back of a cupboard underutilised. Don’t forget the baseball cap if that takes your fancy as well!

Yosser says: Anything goes, unless you're after a specific period or historical scenario. Use and re-use what you already have to keep costs down. Customise gear and check out what the latest PMCs in country are wearing and how it's rigged out. Over all just have fun with it, and don't try and be too dogmatic about the whole look. If you're doing a team PMC look try and have some commonality between your gear for that co-ordinated loadout.

The PDR is a great bit of gear - but as the players that use them know it does have its issues!

So are you having problems releasing and finding the mag release with gloves on or in the dark? Well it looks like that issue has been solved as well, with more 3D printed parts - what would airsofters do without access to 3D printing!
The new mag release, as designed is a little taller on both sides of the AEG so it can easily be found by your finger as it does not fit flush with the body like the original, so it can be found without having to look down at the PDR now. The 'button' has been made wider so it's easier to apply pressure to it, the original is very small and stiff and therefore hard to apply equal pressure.
These replacement mag release 'buttons' are available on PRE-ORDER only as the chap making them needs to produce at least 20 to make the whole thing a viable option and also requires some manual 'tinkering' to install the metal threads. Unfortunately making these items in just ones and two's just isn't viable on costs alone.

The Warwickshire Exhibition Centre played host to the UK’s first dedicated Airsoft Expo back on a rather cold September morning. Held over the weekend of 20th September 2014 I was shocked that I didn’t have to join a large queue awaiting entrance, unlike the British Shooting Show (BSS) where you queue for ages just to get into the car park from the main roads. Now a few of us did mumble and groan that the doors opened late to let us in on the Saturday morning, but no matter we were all here for a day’s exciting airsoft expo ahead, so bring it on!

The exhibition centre is a fully heated, in-door event and much warmer and secure than the ‘cow-sheds’ that the airsoft element is normally relegated to at the BSS. However show goers were disappointed to find a number of exhibitors had pulled out although the organisers Meridienne Exhibitions had attempted to keep show goers fully informed via the usual social media outlets. It was a huge disappointment to many who had made the trip from all over the country to miss out on the likes of Airsoft World just because a certain Scottish Politician was indulging his ego. I was so looking forward to seeing their ‘electronic range’. Maybe one day we’ll see them south of the boarder. The disappointment from airsofters in general was palpable at the lack of support from vendors, manufacturers & exhibitors in general for the expo event.

I can’t talk for the numbers on the Sunday but a fair few airsofters turned up on Saturday to enjoy the displays and vendors on offer. Players could checkout a large selection of airsoft and tactical gear from JD Airsoft with possibly the best selection of gear on offer at the expo. Other airsoft vendors included Badger Tac2, and SOCOM Tactical along with Cloud 9 Combat and Enola Gaye for all your ‘smoke & ‘nades’.

The award for the loudest exhibitor had to be for the boys from Incentive Designs who were showing off a number of devices from a sentry turret to a muzzle flash generator called the MFG Venom. These are the latest in realism for your AEG and give you the ability to generate a 'realistic' muzzle flash. They also showed off the SMG Rattle – a M60 mounted machine gun with added MFG AND programmable sound for added effect. A great bit of kit and extremely loud, so loud they could only demo it once an hour and could be heard back in the car park. They also showed off a prototype tracer unit built into a modified magazine. These looked sweet so let’s hope it isn’t long before we see these on sale.

It was great to see Airsoft Assault at the expo and they were getting players to sign up for their FREE airsoft classified ads portal. Also nice to see Component Shop at the show with everything airsofters could want from chargers to batteries as well as the usual connectors and adaptors you could ever wish for.

Infiltration Airsoft had some great gadgets and gizmo’s on display which all form part of their ‘airsoft experience’ events. They have exciting scenarios coveringe a wide range of missions and scenarios and members get an RFID card which can record details from in game objectives. One of the videos from Infiltration included a ‘meth lab’ setup which needed to be raided or controlled by players and players could scan their RFID cards to ‘prove’ access to various gaming areas. They had some great in-game props which added to the gaming experiences.

Gunman Innovations Airsoft had the scenario area in which they ran ‘Flying Lead’ a mash-up of Cowboys & Zombies in a kind of LARP (Live Action Role Playing) meets Airsoft setup. Each Cowboy was issued with a replica Colt .45 single action revolver whilst the poor Zombie villagers had their rubber pick-axes and shovels with which to defend their Beans & Vittels. Players had a great deal of fun throughout the weekend on this stand which was a credit to the hard work and effort put in by Mich & Helena.

The show did leave me questioning if airrsoft is big enough to support its own dedicated show and I came to the conclusion probably not at this time. Only with a tie-in with the larger ‘shooting fraternity’ will airsoft grow, at least until it gets the support of the foreign manufacturers as well. It’s always noticeable how the UK does seem to be a poor relation in this respect, we just don’t have the mass to attract the attention. We must also attract the wider ancillary services like, providers of action cameras, custom kit makers, target providers, boot sellers and even those experience companies providing live shooting events. Anything and everything airsofters could be interested in. Pricing also has to be a key factor both for tickets and stands especially for new events trying to establish a foot hold in a market place in order to attract and grow an event.

I do hope we see an Airsoft Expo 2015 – we need this for airsoft in the UK to help grow and encourage the sport.

Yosser says: From my perspective it was a grand day out, meeting and greeting airsofters and getting to chat and meet new groups and see some gear I hadn’t seen up close and in person before. I even got to meet a fan from Norway – lol. However I can understand the disappointment some airsofters felt at the event. It is difficult in UK to get retailers, and players to support a BIG dedicated event. It just never seems to achieve the critical mass it needs. I do think a trick is being missed with the lack of tactical kit suppliers or the commitment from large distributors or manufacturers that other large events seem to attract outside of the UK, until that happens and until players themselves get behind and support such events maybe we’ll never get beyond niche?

For XDM & 1911 Pistols

Often overlooked by airsofters, Fobus have been making holsters (and other retention systems) for quite some time now originally developed in Israel for military, law enforcement and other ‘special services’. The Fobus holsters are a sea change in holster design and technology, with the first injection molded polymer holster and Fobus claiming to be the leader with more fits for more models in the market place. If you’re looking for standard, retention, roto, thumb break, CH rapid release, ankle, concealed, drop leg, paddle or belt holsters (plus many others beside), Fobus probably has the solution for you and your weapons system.

As we can’t hope to ever cover them all, we shall be taking a look at a small sample from the range, including the paddle rotating holster for the 1911 and the thumb break model for Springfield’s XDM.

Thumb Break Springfield XDM pistol holster

Firstly this is a paddle holster. For those that don’t know what one of those is, it is the means by which a handgun, whose method of securing the holster to the wearer, utilizes a flat, concave shaped piece of plastic or leather designed to be worn against the body and ‘clips’ over the belt or trousers. This holster also has a thumb break, secured by snap fastenings, which prevents an unauthorised person from drawing the weapon but also crucially secures it in the holster while the owner engages in vigorous activities, such as many airsofters do!

As for holding my replica WE XDM 40 it does that very well. The holster even holds the WE XDM Compact 3.8 thanks to the adjustable thumb break allowing the shorter frame to be accommodated easily. Now on the full size .40 model, well it is a bit of a tight fit for the thumb break but being a leather strap I’m hoping this will stretch a little over time and get easier to fit. But for the smaller framed 3.8 you shouldn’t have a problem when the screw for the thumb break is adjusted, allowing the shortening of the securing strap across the top of the pistol. Even with the strap disengaged the friction retention on the holster is good and another adjustable feature on the holster allows this to be increased or decreased according to your requirement or preference via the flat head screw head just below where the trigger housing on the holster is.

Whilst wearing and in I had no problems with the holster. Although returning the weapon back to holster and refastening the thumb break over the pistol was a little tight, but as I mentioned earlier I’m hoping this gets easier over time on my full frame WE XDM 40. The holster was not adjustable for rake but I didn’t really find that a problem, although like many I find a slight forward 10 degree cant slightly easier to use. I would encourage you to follow the manufacturer’s guide on fitting and using the holster, which comes included in the packaging to get the best out of your purchase though as it offers some good tips on use and adjustment and will help you get the most out of your purchase. For those using the holster with real weapons it is an absolute must to read the instructions for safeties sake, please.

Paddle rotating holster for 1911

In keeping with the previous review this is also a paddle holster. One of the notable exceptions on this model is that the rear of the paddle is coated with a soft rubberised coating to aid comfort and fit, but otherwise fit and use is much the same as the above model.

This holster also has the facility to alter the rake angle at which the pistol will sit on the waist of the user, something which many users will love. Adjustment is made by means of a supplied hex key. Firstly loosen off the retaining hex screw (located on the back of the paddle), adjust to desired angle of rake, and then retighten. It’s really easy to adjust, but it might take some trial and error to find what’s comfortable for you. This adjustability also means you could adjust the rake to make a practical cross draw holster too.

Physically this holster just holds the weapon by a friction hold on the trigger, which again is adjustable for grip and preference by means of an adjustable flat head screw head located just below the trigger housing on the holster. The holster itself has a minimal appearance that shows off the lines of the weapon clearly and allows a tantalising glimpse of the pistol slide through the designed ‘port holes’ on the holster, which is a nice design touch, but for those not liking that they also do holsters which a more conventional appearance if that doesn’t appeal.

Again properly fitted on a belt and adjusted this should give you pretty much trouble free operation. I will say though that this is probably more suited to a range rather than skirmish wear for an airsofter as it lacks the thumb break which gives you that added security from accidental loss. I’ve been unable to try a Detonics style compact 1911 so I’m unable to state if one of these will fit this holster but I’ve tried other 1911's and a few other WE models with no issues at all.
