Uses of our Natural Resources

Rock and mineral resources have a wide variety of uses and play a huge role in our lives The Mineral Information Institute has a poster showing how much of a variety of minerals each person uses in his or her lifetime.

Minerals are important to our health. We need small amounts of a wide variety of minerals. Minerals found in Tennessee which people need include: calcium, phosphorus, sulfur, copper, fluoride, iron, and zinc.

Coal, oil and natural gas provide us with almost all of the energy we use to light, heat and run our world.

Minerals are ingredients in almost all of the products we use from fertilizer to plastics, from toothpaste to kitty litter, from knives to plates.

Minerals are common ingredients in pigments. In fact, some of the earliest uses of minerals were as pigments.

Minerals also play an important role in the processing of materials. Bentonite is important in well drilling, Barite is important in oil drilling. Fluorite is important in making steel

Resource	How are our resources used? (characteristics exploited)
Barite	Used in oil drilling to weigh down the oil and prevent gushers (high specific gravity), filler in paint, glass, toothpaste.
Chert	Used to make stone tools. (hardness, fracture patterns). Used as fill to provide a stable base for roads (insolubility)
Clay	Used to make pottery and bricks. Used for pet litter (ability to absorb water)
Chalcopyrite (copper)	Copper is used to make electrical wiring (electrical conductivity). Used in alloys - bronze and brass (low melting point, beauty, resistance to oxidation) Used as an ingredient in pigments (blue and green)
Coal	Used as a fuel (flammable). The oils and tars produced processing coal are processed into a variety of organic solvents and compounds such as plastics, motor fuel, photo developer, perfume, medicine, and sugar substitute.
Fluorite	Used as a flux - i.e. used as an intermediate chemical to separate metals from waste material. Another important product made from fluorite is hydrofluoric acid, which is used in the pottery, optics, and plastics industry. Fluorite is also used in making opalescent glass and in enameling cookware.
Galena (lead)	The largest use of lead is in automotive batteries. It is also used as weights (high specific gravity). Used as an ingredient in solder (soft, low melting point.). Until recently it was also used as an ingredient in paint and as an additive in gasoline to make engines run more smoothly.
Gypsum	Gypsum is primarily used to make wallboard. It is also an ingredient in cement.
Ilmenite (titanium)	Titanium is used in alloys to make strong light-weight materials - space ships, bicycles Used to make white paint - non-toxic replacement for lead, which used to be used for this purpose. (low reactivity)
Iron	Iron is used for tools, for appliances, for building supports. It is also used as a pigment (red and ochre)
Limestone	Limestone is used as building stone, for ornamental stone for surfaces and sculpture, to make cement and mortar, as crushed stone for fill
Mussel Shells	Mussel shells were used as ceremonial objects. European Americans have used shells as ornaments - buttons and pearls for jewelry.
Oil/Natural Gas	Oil and natural gas are used as fuels and ingredients in the chemical industry to produce petroleum based products notably plastics.
Phosphate	Phosphate is used as a fertilizer and to make phosphoric acid which is a major ingredient in food products such as cola drinks.
Saltpeter	Saltpeter was used as a fertilizer (source of nitrogen) and as an ingredient in gunpowder. It has now been replaced by the related compound ammonium nitrate which can be manufactured in the laboratory.
Sand & Gravel	Sand and gravel are used as fill to provide a stable foundation for buildings and roads.
Sandstone	Sandstone is used as a building material.
Sphalerite (zinc)	Zinc is used as an ingredient in brass (with copper). It is used to coat (galvanize) iron implements to protect them from rusting. It is used as a pigment (white)

Summary:
In Thane district near Shahpur-Asangaon we find a group of three mountains – Mahuli, Bhandargad and Palasgad. Here the nature is so pleasant that we must visit this place to see the natural beauty. The mountain with many pinnacles is known as Mahuli.
It's divided into three parts – northern one is Palasgad, Mahuli in the middle and Bhandargad on the southern end.

History :
The creator of this fort is unknown. In 1485 this place came under rule of Malik Ahmed who was the founder of Nijamshahi. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nijamshahi, Adilshahi and Mughals of Delhi together tried to end Nijamshahi. In the year 1635-36, in difficult circumstances Shahaji Raje transferred himself with Jijabai and Shivaji to Mahuli. Khan Jaman, son of Mahabat Khan beleaguered this fort. Shahaji Raje asked for help to Portuguese. They refused and Shahaji Raje surrendered himself.
From Bhandargad we can locate pinnacles of Bhatoba and Navara & Navari. The surrounding scenery is very beautiful.

Ways To Reach : Via Asangaon :

Asangaon is on Mumbai-Nasik rail route. From Asangaon station by walking or by auto we reach at Mahuli gaon. It is 5 km away from Asangaon station. At the base of the fort we see a very beautiful Mahadev temple. One can spend a night here. From here at the right side, after crossing a small water flow, and climbing for 3 km further, we reach at the fort. From this way we have to go by a ladder. After crossing it there are two water reservoirs.

Via Vasind :
Alight at Vasind by bus or local train. Then go at north for Duhagaon and then ‘Charyacha Pada’. Keeping Chanderi to right, one has to ascend the western trunk of Mahuli. This way is quite difficult. We reach at Kalyan Darwaaja and proceed to the top of Bhandargad. There is a lithograph on this entrance.

Accommodation Facility :
No accommodation is available on Bhandargad. The gatehouses at Mahuli can accommodate a few people. However it is better to complete the trek within one whole day.
Food Facility :

One should arrange for the foodstuffs.

Drinking Water Facility :
Water is available in reservoirs in front of gatehouses at Mahuli. No water is available on Bhandargad.
Time To Reach :
2 hours from Asangaon

Notes :

Mahuli is Easy from Asangaon- this is most trodden way.

The Mother pray from the nature that his son should be a achieving goal of all his desire and want's and help the nature from all evil disaster.

It is just after 5 to 10 calender day of Hindu Calender for Raksha Bandhan Festival. They worship a grass called as "Kush".

All mother put a 6 Knot's in the grass with using little finger for his beloved son and open one Knot after the prayer.
In northern region of India the grass is found at unfertile land or in a Jungle but if we move from Nothern region to Southern Region it is rarely found.

In over all Maharashtra it is hardly seen, In Thane District, it is seen on Ghoadbunder road ,Azadnagar.

The grass is used in worship used by Bhatji, - (Pandit's) in worship. The Grass was rooted by One Hindu North Indian Hindi Family - of Maurya origin. Since 20Yr's Back and now it spreaded to 10 to 20ft' round in circle.

The day of celebration was started from 1 Maurya family and now spreaded to No's of family's. in Thane City. All the Devotee used to come and pray for there well wishes and sing there ritual song's. which is very amazing to listen the folk song by North Indian. Even it's amazing to Listen a story by Granny's.

Summary:-
Mumbai is made up of 7 islands, and was separated from main land due to Mahim creek. This was an important trade route, and the Mahim fort was built to safeguard it. Mahim fort is the most ancient fort in Mumbai region.

History :-

In 1140, King Pratapbimb built a fort on Mahakavati aka Mahim creek, and made this as his capital. He encouraged trade and commerce here in 12th century.

When the fort came under British control, Gerald Aungier reconstructed this fort. When the Portuguese attacked this fort in 1672, they could not win as there were 100 soldiers and 30 canons on the fort.

On 14th February 1689 Siddhi Yakut Khan of Janjira attacked Mumbai with an army of 2500, and captured the fort. He raided this region for around a year. The British took it back later.

Fascinating Spots :-
This fort is a good example of British architecture with its characteristic bastions, strong walls, decorative pillars and wonderful carvings. Encroachment has blocked the whole fort now.

Ways To Reach :-
We have to go to Mahim beach from Mahim station. From there, the fort is at a walk of 10 min.

Accomadation :-
Can carry some Breakfast, as it's in between Mumbai the city So no need to worry for lunch.

Summary:-
To the north of Mumbai is Madh Island, and Madh fort is situated here, between Madh Island and Versova. This fort was built in 1600 by Portuguese to safeguard Marve creek and as a prison.

Fascinating Spots :-

This fort is in a good shape amongst the ones in Mumbai, with ramparts and bastions intact. The fort is surrounded by land on three sides and faces Arabian Sea on its one side. There are slits for guns in the walls. The secret passage towards the sea is closed now. The main entrance is closed and there are stairs through the bastion.

Since the fort is under the control of IAF, it can be seen only from outside. Also, photography is not allowed.

Way To Reach:-
We have to go to get Best Bus number 271 from Malad west to reach the fort. From there, we reach the back side of the fort walking towards Killeshwar temple. There is a way from the temple which takes us around the fort.

Accomadation:

One can easily carry there food and Lunch because it near to Mumbai City

All Indians, who have paid attention in their history classes, cannot easily forget the derogatory remarks made by Macaulay about Indian languages and literature. It is indeed ironic that nearly 700 Indian words have earned a place in the vocabulary of the very language of its colonizers. Indian and Indo-English words are steadily finding a place in the Oxford Dictionary. English has borrowed freely from Indian languages, following its general pattern of borrowing as much as possible from other languages. A study of English vocabulary will reveal the fact that English has borrowed freely and called its own, words from several African, Asian and European countries.

The Oxford dictionary, with every edition, faithfully records all the Indian words absorbed into the English vocabulary. English has accepted words from Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarathi and Marathi. The following is an interesting list.

1. Philosophical and Spiritual terms

Aryan (Sanskrit) – a group of people who spoke the parent language of the Indo-European group of languages.
Chakra (Sanskrit) – center of spiritual energy in the human body, wheel or circle.
Dharma (Sanskrit) – moral law.
Guru (Sanskrit) – a teacher, guide or mentor.
Nirvana (Sanskrit) – a state of perfect happiness.

2. Social and Religious terms

Juggernaut (Hindi) – an overwhelming force that crushes everything in its path.
Pariah (Tamil) - social outcast.
Sati (Hindi) – the former Hindu practice of a widow immolating herself on her husband’s funeral pyre.
Pundit (Hindi) – a learned person.
Purdah (Urdu) – a curtain or screen used for purposes of sex segregation.

3. Terms of Fashion

Bandana (Hindi) – a large, handkerchief brightly coloured.
Bindi (Hindi) – a dot marked on the forehead by Hindu wives.
Bangle (Hindi) – a rigid bracelet or anklet.
Dhoti (Hindi) – a loincloth worn by Hindu men in India.
Jodhpurs (Rajasthani) – long riding breeches.

4. Culinary Terms

Curry (Tamil) – a spicy dish.
Basmati (Hindi) – a type of rice.
Ghee (Hindi) – clarified butter.
Kebab (Urdu) – roasted meat.
Chutney (Hindi) – a side dish for food.

5. Others

Ring Head Luis Antonio Aguero Torregosa has over 300 holes in his face, and believe it or not, he will fill all of them with metal.
This man with his extreme facial decorations is Luis Antonio Aguero, very famous in his homeplace Havana on Cuba. But not only the face of Aguero, who is known as the ‘Piercing-king’, but also his entire body is pierced with al kind off rings, some of them at very sensitive places.

The Great Banyan is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose
Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India.
It was the widest tree in
the world in terms of the area of the canopy and is
estimated to be about 200 to 250 years old. It became
diseased after it was struck by lightning, so in
1925 the middle of the tree was excised
to keep the remainder healthy; this has left
it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree.
A 330 meter long road was built around its circumference, but the tree continues
to spread beyond it.

The Great Banyan tree is over 250 years old and
in spread it is the largest known in India, perhaps in Asia.
There is no clear history of the tree, but it is mentioned
in some travel books of the nineteenth century.
It was damaged by two great cyclones in 1884 and 1886,
when some of its main branches were broken and
exposed to the attack of a hard fungus.
With its large number of aerial roots, The Great Banyan
looks more like a forest than an individual tree.
The tree now lives without its main trunk,
which decayed and was removed in 1925. The circumference of the original trunk was 1.7 m
and from the ground was 15.7 m. The area
occupied by the tree is about 14500 square meters
(about 1.5 hectares or 4 acres).
The present crown of the tree has a circumference of about 1 kilometre and the highest branch rises
to about 25 m; it has at present 2880 aerial
roots reaching down to the ground.
