Al Duncan Enterprises, LLC joins America’s Promise Alliance and its Grad Nation Campaign.
At Home, in School and in our Communities Al Duncan Enterprises LLC Supports the Call to Reduce the High School Dropout Rate and Improve the lives of America’s Young People

ATLANTA, GA — March 8, 2013 — Today Al Duncan Enterprises, LLC announced they have become a partner of America’s Promise Alliance (America’s Promise) and will work with them to help reduce the nation’s high school dropout rate and ensure that America’s children and youth have the resources they need to lead healthy, successful lives.

The mission of Al Duncan Enterprises, LLC is to help young people turn unlimited potential into exceptional performance by providing evidence-based resources and solutions to youth serving organizations and institutions. This directly relates to the Five Promises outlined by America’s Promise, so the ADE team is excited about becoming a national partner.

Founded in 1997 with General Colin Powell as its founding chair, America’s Promise is the nation’s largest partnership dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth. Its strong national network of more than 400 partners is comprised of organizations representing all sectors of American life. Through America’s Promise, these partners are working together to end the dropout crisis and see that more children and youth experience the Five Promises in their lives—Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, Effective Education, and Opportunities to Help Others.

“Ensuring that our young people are equipped to perform at an exceptional level is a crucial component of ensuring the continued growth and prosperity of our great nation,” says Al Duncan, President & CEO. “We are excited to join with America’s Promise Alliance and all of its partners because they are leading the charge.”

As an official partner, ADE will support and take part in the work of America’s Promise to ensure that more of the nation’s young people experience the Five Promises and are prepared to finish high school prepared for college and the 21st century workforce. ADE will also be an active partner in supporting the work of the Grad Nation campaign, a large and growing movement of dedicated individuals, organizations and communities working together to end the dropout crisis. The goal of Grad Nation is to raise the national high school graduation rate to 90 percent by 2020, with no school graduating fewer than 80 percent of its students on time.

“Creating stronger communities where youth feel supported and encouraged is essential to America’s future strength and vitality,” said John Gomperts, president and CEO of America's Promise Alliance. “By coming together in common purpose, we demonstrate our commitment and the fact that we all have a role to play in the success of our children and youth, and we are infinitely more powerful as a united force. We’re thrilled that Al Duncan Enterprises, LLC has joined this movement.”

The work of America’s Promise includes signature initiatives like the 100 Best Communities for Young People competition and Grad Nation Communities. America’s Promise also supports and distributes numerous reports highlighting the latest research and data for communities and youth development practitioners. This includes the annual Building a Grad Nation report on the dropout crisis as well as resources on parental engagement, career exploration and communications. As a partner, ADE will have early access to all America’s Promise commissioned research, tools and information.
SAVANNAH, GA—Savannah State University GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) held its summer awards banquet on Friday, July 8, 2012 at Johnny Harris Banquet Hall. Internationally renowned youth advocate and publisher, Al Duncan, was the keynote speaker. Duncan proved to be very adept at keeping the students engaged with his Duncan Nuggets®. "Failure is only permanent if you quit," he told the students as he shared his story of growing up in a socio-economically disadvangeted neighborhood in North Philadelphia to becoming a professional musician and giving it all up to raise his 12 yr. old brother.

University Campus students were able to spend valuable time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day hearing from one of the nation's up-and-coming youth empowerment advocates, Al Duncan. Duncan easily engaged campus students in a give-and-take on the qualities needed for true leadership. Above all other characteristics, Duncan believes the power of choice––exercised daily––is indispensable. "Choice is the steering wheel for your life," he said. "You have a choice to exhibit exceptional service to other people." Each day, he likes to ask himself: "What do you know that you could be using to make your life or someone else's life better?"

Duncan, now 39, recalled the story of how his life shifted at age 24. He was then enjoying a carefree lifestyle as a professional saxophone player, but on a more serious level was also reconnecting with the written works of Frederick Douglass and Dr. King. Then one day he received a disturbing call from his mother, back in the dangerous inner-city Philadelphia neighborhood where he had grown up. Duncan's younger brother, only 12 at the time, was headed for trouble. He returned home to stay with the family and help, but determined he couldn't shield his younger sibling from the violence of the neighborhood.

So the two relocated to Atlanta, and at 24, Duncan took on the responsibility of getting a new place, finding a new line of work, and raising his 12-year-old brother. Although challenging, it all turned out for the best. Consequently, the advice he shares with young people who have grown up in a celebrity-oriented media culture is this: "Leadership is about much more than what you do when you're in the spotlight. It's about what you do when you're on the spot."

Al Duncan - FBLA Colorado District 1 Conference - Testimonials
