The Development and Evaluation of a Network for Producing and Sharing Video Presentations

This paper describes the technology and methodology used in the development and usability evaluation of a network, named PresentationTube, to help faculty members at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman, produce and share quality video presentations for their students. The network offers a desktop application for recording video presentations and an online platform to share presentations online. The recorder allows faculty members to narrate and annotate PowerPoint slides and synchronize a variety of visual aids, including webcam footage, whiteboard, drawing board, and web browser. The platform uses YouTube API to upload and integrate videos with scrollable slide thumbnails. Quantitative and qualitative techniques including, quality of video presentation rubric, usability questionnaire, instructors’ interview and students’ perspectives to video presentations questionnaire were implemented to collect data and report on the usability of the network and effectiveness of video presentations. The results of usability evaluation showed that the network was perceived by instructors (n=31) and students (n=218) as effective, efficient, and relevance for self- production and sharing of video presentations. In addition, video presentations (n=187) produced by participants met the criteria of quality of video presentations. Directions for future research and system development are suggested in this study (Sadik, 2014).

Improving visual literacy through visuals

Today's culture has become so visual that teachers and students get considerable information from visual elements. These visual elements are increasingly appearing in teaching and learning resources, delivered across a range of media in a variety of formats: textbooks, multimedia presentations, computer tutorials, television programs, and Web resources. Visual information usually comes in the form of line drawings, photographs, maps, diagrams, flowcharts, graphs, time lines, geometrical figures, and Venn diagrams. Educators believe that using visual treatments helps learners to explore meanings clearly, directly, and easily, and yields positive results. For example, students can learn the word "spoon," but to look at a spoon communicates so much more. By looking at the spoon, students can read the history of eating, utensils, materials, civilization, culture, and habits (Sadik, 2011).

YouTube Video Uploader 3.0 Script (PHP)

YouTube Video Uploader 3.0 is a YouTube API-based PHP script that lets you add YouTube uploading functionality to your own website or web application. It allows your users to upload videos directly to your own YouTube Channel, without the need to sign in to YouTube or even have Google Account. The script uses the latest version (3.0) of YouTube Application Programming Interface (API) to upload videos and and set the video's metadata (title, description, tags, status, and category). The script uses Google OAuth 2.0 endpoints to create web server application that use OAuth 2.0 authorization to access Google APIs. OAuth 2.0 allows you to share specific data with an application while keeping your Google Account usernames, passwords, and other information private.

While videos are being uploaded, progress bar show the current video upload progress so your users don’t have to second guess how long uploading videos is going to take. You can set video file size limit and video types with ease to ensure your website is free from abuse.

To make this script work, you’ll need to create and authorize an app in Google Developer Console at https://console.developers.google.com (very easy, see instructions).You can integrate this script in any application with minimum effort and without the need to use MySQL unless you need to save user's logs and info.

I have spent a bit of time today searching for screencasting programs whereby teachers and students can record what is on their computer screens into a film. I have previously mentioned Community Clips and Screencast-o-matic on this blog and have now found another wonderful program that lets you do the following very easily.

You can record your film and then with a click of a button you can switch between your PowerPoint presentation, Web browser and websites, you can change your webcam position on the screen and even take the webcam off the screen or make your face take up the whole screen, you can draw on the PowerPoint slides and web pages to show annotations when needed and you can do a whole heap more without having to 'jump around from program to program' whilst recording your film (as you can see from the screenshot below that shows the program).

You can then save your film as a .wmv file to give to other people on a USB stick or on your VLE/Fronter page. I really like this program because it does allow me to do these things quickly to explain an idea to other people. Have a look at it soon. You go to the website: www.presentationtube.com and then you just sign up for an account and after you have signed up then you download the program to your computer (so you can access it anytime without any internet needed). It will be handy for those subjects whereby you need to explain concept and topics to the class over and over again. This way, you say it once on the film and then the students can watch it anytime to remember how to do it.

PresentationTube Recorder is a simple tool designed to help instructors, students and business professionals record their presentations from the comfort of home or office, and without the need to have Internet connection while recording. The Recorder synchronizes a variety of visual aids including PowerPoint slides, Webcam streaming, whiteboard, drawing board, Web browser content, Desktop recording . With visual aids, like the drawing board, presenters can draw lines, curves, graphs, and shapes on the screen to emphasize or clarify their ideas, so the demonstration can be clearer. The whiteboard helps presenters to type text while presenting using the keyboard making it an ideal tool to add more details, or explain equations using words, numbers, and symbols. Currently available for Windows only. Mac, iOS and Android versions will be available in the near future.

Abstract
This paper describes the technology and methodology used in the development and evaluation of an online network to help instructors produce and share video presentations in a new and innovative way. The network offers an application and platform for recording and sharing video presentations. The application allows instructors to narrate and annotate PowerPoint slides and synchronize a variety of visual aids, including webcam footage, whiteboard, drawing board, and web browser. The platform uses YouTube API to upload and integrate videos with scrollable slide thumbnails. Quantitative and qualitative techniques were implemented to collect data and report on the usability of the network and effectiveness of video presentations. The results of usability evaluation showed that the network was perceived by instructors and students as effective, efficient, and relevance for self- production and sharing of video presentations. In addition, video presentations produced by participants met the criteria of quality of video presentations.

- وضوح فكرة العرض
- دقة المحتوى و ارتباطه بأحد الموضوعات التي تدرس في المدارس أو الجامعات.
- تسلسل عرض المحتوى و سلاسة الإنتقال بين الشرائح.
- استخدام الصور و الرسومات و التأثيرات بشكل ملائم داخل عرض البوبوينت.
- جودة الصوت و الصورة الملتقطة عبر الكامير.
- ملائمة أسلوب مخاطبة المشاهد.

Rules

1. Contest is open to all individuals age 16 years or older who are students, teachers, faculty members or business professionals.

2. A participant can be named as an individual a maximum of once. Individual participants are eligible to be recognized more than once.

3. Each entry must meet the requirements as specified in Terms of Use.

4. Any nonconforming entries will be disqualified. Altered, defaced, mutilated, illegible, or incomplete video presentations are not eligible and will result in disqualification of entry.

5. Entries that contain any content that is pornographic in nature, lewd, or sexually explicit will be disqualified. After each entry is screened for compliance with the entry requirements, it will be judged by an independent panel of judges selected by PresentationTube.

6. The judges' decisions are final and binding.

7. The video presentation should integrate a variety of presentation aids and synchronizes presenter's audio and video, PowerPoint slides, whiteboard, and drawing board.

8. The video presentation should allow interactivity also via Facebook social plug-in

9. First slide should contain information on: title of the topic, and author details (name, school, university, country, etc.).

10. Add the statement "This presentation does not include plagiarized material" on the last slide.

11. The video length should be from 10-15 minutes, with no more than 20 slides.
