Sometimes, the hectic nature of running Alabama Chanin makes me feel that we are all running at a frantic pace. I’ll be answering a ringing phone, hurriedly returning emails, picking up Maggie from school – then, I’ll glance up and notice that our Production Department is completely calm. They are moving fluidly along, peacefully and happily making, sewing, cutting, doing. This serene productivity comes to us through our Studio Directress, Diane Hall, and now, Olivia Sherif, who is following in Diane’s footsteps.

Olivia came to Alabama Chanin at just the right time and set about making herself indispensable almost immediately. You see, when Diane turned in her five-year notice, I experienced a not-so-slight panic (along with a few tears).

Diane has been with our company for ten years and plays an integral role in our day-to-day operations. I began putting out feelers for an apprentice of sorts, someone who might be able to pick up some of Diane’s practical knowledge. I thought, surely by the end of her five-year notice, Diane could help to mold the right person into just what we needed. At June’s suggestion, I emailed Olivia.

At the time, Olivia was working as a barista at a local coffee shop (see her first blog post, Coffee 101, from Wednesday) and sewed, painted, created in her free time. But, she’d graduated with a degree in Art and had taught grade school art classes. Olivia said that she was looking for something else, a more artistic way to use her energies. She remembers, “I went into the Factory, chatted with Natalie and Diane for about 15 minutes, then showed them that I could use a pair of scissors.”

Upon meeting her, I felt a natural ease and a distinctly positive energy from her. She came to work with us the next week while continuing to work at the coffee shop. You see, I think that as much as we were “testing” her out, Olivia was “testing” us out. And it seems that we passed.

Each day, Olivia can be found working with Diane and Steven – cutting, sewing, crocheting, packaging, answering the phone, making the best cappuccino in Florence, being our general office good spirit, along taking care of any number of other day-to-day duties as they arrive.

She may be the most optimistic person that I’ve ever met. For her, the glass isn’t half-full – it’s practically overflowing. I’ve never known anyone more in love with life. Every day she challenges me to see things in a more positive light. Alas, most of us haven’t quite reached her level of positivity – but, we’re trying!

Olivia came to crafting and making during her childhood as she watched her mother sew most of her clothes. She spends much of her free time these days sewing for herself, painting and drawing, and experimenting with different kinds of textiles. If there is an artistic medium that Olivia hasn’t attempted, then she is thinking about trying it right now. She has an urge to wander and travels abroad whenever time and money allow. In the past few years, she has visited Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, and Norway, among other places. She has an impressive array of friends and I have to admit that I don’t think Olivia has ever met a stranger. On the other hand, she will readily admit that her cat, Aurora, is definitely one of her very best friends.

We have agreed to allow Olivia extended time off each year that she can travel, explore, and come to know all of the cities that fascinate her. My talk of Yvon Chouinard and his book Let My People Go Surfing opened her eyes to the fact that she can have a long term position with Alabama Chanin AND travel. Look for her this coming summer in New York, or Amsterdam, or Vienna… she is still deciding and we will let you know!

An asset to anyone who has ever met her, taken the time to sit in her constantly- shining light, or will meet her on her up-and-coming adventures – Olivia Sherif, part of the heart and soul of Alabama Chanin.

In New York’s Garment District, there are two stores that take the prize for the most comprehensive selection of embroidery ribbons: Mokuba Co., Ltd and Tinsel Trading Company. At Alabama Chanin, we happen to purchase the cotton tape that we use for embroidery from Mokuba, who supplies us with gorgeous ribbons and other notions made in Japan. I have visited Mokuba many times in search of the perfect ribbons and always found a more than exquisite selection.

This week for DIY Thursday, we would like to share instructions on the ribbon embroidery used as an embellishment in our newest book. In Alabama Studio Sewing + Design, we introduce ribbon embroidery with 100% Cotton Tape as a beautiful way to add delicate dimension to your projects and garments. (Color card available here.) We have been using this technique since 2002, when I began using ribbon embroidery for our couture collections. This ribbon creates a sophisticated, old-world effect and gives our garments a unique tactile quality. Below, we share the steps to create this detail, using the Climbing Daisy stencil.

In Chapter 8 of Alabama Studio Sewing + Design, we feature seven Fabrics + Fabric Maps. These detailed “maps” show you exactly how to create the fabrics, including the placement of every stitch, appliqué, and bead.

“Climbing Daisy is our homage to ribbon embroidery, which uses ribbon rather than thread or embroidery floss to stitch a design. You can actually use ribbon embroidery for any stitches in this book.”

To create Climbing Daisy with Cotton Tape embroidery-

Stencil fabric using Climbing Daisy from page 132 of Alabama Studio Sewing + Design, enlarged by 200 percent, or download the stencil full-size from our Studio Books Resources to print.

Stitch larger petal shapes using cotton tape and large-eyed embroidery needle.

Create French Knots (see page 75) with the cotton tape at the center of petal shapes and along stems.

Stem-stitch (see page 85) long, curving stems using embroidery floss.

Repeat process until you have stitched each of your stenciled shapes.

You can visit our Fabric + Sewing page to purchase the 100% Cotton Tape in 10 yard lengths. It is available in nine colors. The white is my current favorite color – but this is most likely as we are working on a new bridal collection at the moment. I have always said that it is strange how the “current collection” is always my favorite.

Whenever I meet someone, the first thing that usually comes out of their mouth is, “You’re the girl that made me coffee that time.” And as long as that statement is followed by, “It was the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had,” I am a happy girl. I had 6 years of coffee-slinging under my belt before laying down the steam wand and picking up a sewing needle, so I’ve learned a few things about this “black gold” that so many find themselves indulging in on a daily basis.

People that love coffee tend to be among my favorite people – kindred spirits, of sorts. Benjamin Franklin stated that, “Among the numerous luxuries of the table…coffee may be considered as one of the most valuable. It excites cheerfulness without intoxication; and the pleasing flow of spirits which it occasions…is never followed by sadness, languor or debility.” I’m one of those that not only loves coffee as a hot beverage, but I also love the entire ritual of it all; it’s more than just a drink, it’s an experience: the selection of the perfect coffee bean, the method you utilize to brew, and your additions or tweaks that make your coffee the perfect enhancement to a normal day. I may even enjoy making coffee more than I like drinking it.

As with everything in life, a good finished product starts with a strong foundation. You should feel free to experiment as long as you follow basic rules. I am a firm believer that anything you do should be done carefully, with love and attention to details; it should also enhance the spirit of you and yours. Whether you’re making coffee for yourself or someone else, you want the outcome to be worth the time and effort. The coffee we brew at Alabama Chanin is from Higher Grounds Trading Company, an amazing Alabama-based company that does so much more than just roast coffee. They are committed to providing the best coffee through the most sustainable practices, while forwarding up to 10% of profits back to various non-profit organizations. We usually brew the Appalachian Trail Blend, that benefits the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and management of the Appalachian Trail. It’s a nice dark roast that is very versatile, whether you are making a regular pot of coffee, French press, or espresso beverage. After careful bean selection, I also pay close attention to cup choice when pouring my cup of coffee. I usually reach for a drinking glass paired with an Alabama Chanin coffee cozy when preparing the perfect latte or cappuccino.

Here in the studio, we all have our standard, everyday (well almost every day) coffee rituals. Erin loves a good strong cup of black coffee, Natalie enjoys an unsweetened cappuccino, Butch likes sugar in his cappuccino, and June likes to mix it up. My personal favorite way to drink coffee is with a nice, fresh French press, mandatory on a lazy Sunday morning and a special treat during the work week. I also like to have a fresh pot of coffee ready to offer the guests that come and go at Alabama Chanin during the day. If you ever visit our studio, you will certainly be offered one of my specialty cappuccinos.

In the months to come, I will explore some unique ways to consume coffee. It will be like a monthly tea party, just with coffee. Most importantly, I want to express to you how much I take pleasure in the preparation of something so simple and seeing people smile when I hand them something that I enjoy. I also look forward to sharing some basic coffee knowledge that you may or may not be familiar with.

If you are a coffee lover or just a novice, you should own a French press. It brews a nice, full-bodied cup of coffee that warms my soul and brings me much joy.

FRENCH PRESS

To start, there are three things you need to make a French pressed coffee: water, coffee and a French press. Bottled spring water is by far the best water for brewing any type of coffee. I use fresh, course ground coffee, although I tend to set my grinder a bit finer than what is called for. (Like I said, never be afraid of experimenting.)

The Method:

-Heat your water (you may also want to heat a bit extra to pour into your coffee mug to preheat it)

-Use 1/2 cup of freshly ground coffee and place in an 8 cup (large size) French press.

-Just before boiling is reached remove water from heat, start the timer, and pour over the grounds.

-Stir, and watch your coffee grinds bloom (one of my favorite parts!). This is where you watch that nice thick cremadevelop on top of your brew.

-Wait 4 minutes.

-Stir your coffee mixture once again before pressing down the plunger on the French press.

-Press gently, or else you may have a mess on your hands. Once the plunger reaches the bottom, it is recommended that the brewed coffee be removed immediately to stop the brewing process. If the coffee remains in the press it will continue to extract and cause huge variations between cups.

-And you’ve done it! At this point, depending on the roast, I like to add just a touch of heavy whipping cream or half and half, and a sprinkle of raw sugar. Simplistic luxury, yes?

Don’t forget to save your grinds for your garden or your next fabric dying adventure!

-Olivia

** The coffee illustration was created for our local coffee shop by my good friend, Drew Botts. It simply explains the basics.

The Alabama Chanin collection is a luxury line. Hand-selected fabric is sourced, dyed, re-dyed, and sometimes dyed again to achieve the perfect shade. Our team has hand-mixed thousands of paint colors, looking for the perfect complement to a certain hue. Giant rolls of fabric have been returned, donated, or recycled because a run, tear, or other minor defect was spotted. Designs are sketched and often re-sketched. Then come the patterns, more patterns, and finally dozens of samples (all hand-sewn), alterations, editing, more patterns, more samples. Repeat.

Our embellishments are next. We add the glass beads, the intricate decorative stitching, the sturdy straight stitch, endless crocheted snaps, and once again, repeat. Southern couture is expensive, lovely, and nothing less than a passion for those artisans who initial the tags in each one-of-a-kind Alabama Chanin garment.

It took working within this process, in the presence of truly great artisans, for me to realize and appreciate the beauty of hand-made. My personal creations had always adhered to an aesthetic that was much more punk rock: safety pins, whip-stitching, bleach stains, not a pattern in site. Alabama Chanin is truly the other side of DIY: elevated sustainable design constructed to last many lifetimes.

I love the idea of being connected to by the love in every stitch. I’ve spoken of it before, but my love for my daughter Agnes really does motivate me to take my time, slow down and make each piece as lovely as I can (which is far from perfect). I wear the clothes I make, but in my heart-of-hearts I know that I am sewing them for her. I want her to linger over every stitch and know that I made each stitch thinking of her and wishing the best for her future.

Several pieces of evidence have led me to this conclusion; the first is this article from the NY Times and the second was probably the conference call that spurred our upcoming Visiting Artist event. Natalie and I were hunched over the speaker phone in my office exchanging ideas about “loom rooms,” home-made bitters, and interactive art exhibits with a very agreeable Levine.

She ended the call saying she had to open her art gallery/skate shop a few blocks away.

I have emailed Faythe three times with different flight itineraries (thank you, major airline carrier that shall remain nameless), as they keep changing without warning: I have received nothing but kind words and understanding – remarkable stuff.

The more I learn about Faythe and Handmade Nation (originally a film and then a book of the same name), the more I look forward to her arrival.

Faythe will join us @ The Factory on Thursday, April 12, for our Visiting Artist Series, an event complete with traditional Old Fashioneds (thanks to the Van Winkle family) + home-made bitters, interactive crafting, and a group discussion.

The following morning from 10:00 am to noon, Faythe will conduct a seminar about craft and brand development, which is limited to 25 guests. The event is perfect for anyone working to reach the next level in product and brand development. $60 includes conversation, refreshments, a signed copy of Handmade Nation, an Alabama Chanin Journal and Organic Tote Bag.

From what I’ve gathered, Taos is a Magical Place. Natalie made a trip there not so long ago and came home breathless with tales of beauty and enlightenment. She was especially enthralled with the story of Mabel Dodge Luhan and the Mabel Dodge Luhan House.

Her experience inspired a new series of workshops called Weekend Away.

Natalie wrote in the introduction to this series:

“I had the opportunity to visit Taos not so very long ago and, as I much as I was looking forward to the trip, nothing could have prepared me for the experience. In a word: incredible. My stay at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, my time in Taos, the breath-taking mountain backdrop, all left me feeling rested, energized, inspired.

I have always felt that our workshops have a sort of healing property and, while we love hosting weekend workshops in our home @The Factory, we also feel that it is beneficial to visit the “homes” of others for an extended stay. We are beginning to seek destinations that nourish the soul and calm the mind. Taos seems the perfect place to begin.”

We will be staying in the Mabel Dodge Luhan House guest rooms and the workshop events will take place in the common rooms that have such a rich artistic history.

I spoke with Dorothy from the Mabel Dodge Luhan House yesterday morning, asking if there might be a chef on staff who could prepare some regional recipes during our retreat.

“Oh yes, one of the chefs on staff just completed a beautiful cookbook called, From Taos with Love”…

“Are there trails or guided hikes nearby?”

“Walking distance, just in the Plaza,” Dorothy speaks to me as though I know the area. Her tone and quick answers make me feel familiar with the grounds already. She describes points of interest and assures me there will be no shortage of beautiful things to experience.

“Can guests come early or stay late?”

“Of course, but they should call. We can give them a 10% discount if they call and mention they’re with Alabama Chanin.”

And now I’m certain that Taos must exist in a parallel universe, one where reservations aren’t made online and you can sense that the person on the other end of the receiver is smiling.

I feel compelled to tell Dorothy about the yoga sessions and guided meditation we have planned. I tell her that this is our first weekend away, what we’re looking for, and how excited we all are.

“I’ll send you some things,” she says before we end the call. I have already received one package from Dorothy at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, filled with pictures and info, and a copy of a hand-drawn layout map of the grounds. I’ve been studying it, dreaming of arriving in June.

I also ordered “Edge of Taos Desert: An Escape to Reality”. I am eager to learn more. I am considering it my Taos primer.

The final details are falling into place, but we always love to hear your suggestions. Feel free to comment here or email me at june(at)alabamachanin.com if you have any tips or suggestions for our stay in Taos.

This will be the first of many weekends away. Meals, lodging, and a beautiful custom project will just be parts of the experience. Join us, as we design the rest of our journey.

Registration is now open.

Below you find some information taken directly from the Mabel Dodge Luhan website. I can’t imagine saying it any better:

“She was a woman of profound contradictions. She was generous. She was petty. Domineering and endearing. She was Mabel Gansen Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan – salon hostess, art patroness, writer and self-appointed savior of humanity.
Today as you approach the house of Mabel Dodge Luhan, it’s easy to see why some of the greatest minds of the 20th century were inspired here. Situated at the end of a quiet road not far from the center of town, the house appears much as it did in the days when Mabel admired her views of the sacred Taos Mountain from the third-story solarium. One can only imagine the tantalizing conversations that must have taken place within these walls. After all, Georgia O’Keeffe stayed here. So did D.H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams, Martha Graham and Carl Jung, among many other notables. As an historic inn and conference center which offers retreat-style meetings and artistic, literary, and personal growth workshops, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House continues to build on its 80-year history of personal, intellectual and artistic ferment.
As a guest of the house expect to enjoy warm adobe charm, early century elegance, historic relevance. Herringbone vigas, traditional arched doorways, kiva fireplaces, and carved pillars. A welcoming hearth and relaxed ambiance. Panoramic view. Quiet patios and a tree-lined acequia. A full gourmet breakfast will start each day of your stay with us.”

Event Details – these can also be found on our new Workshop Resources page:

Your stay starts Friday, June 29, 2012, with check-in at 3:00 pm.
Welcome cocktails and dinner will be served Friday evening. Saturday begins with a beautiful breakfast followed by a day of DIY, stories, and laughter, with more incredible cuisine in between. Wind down the day with a delicious dinner, and a breathtaking view of the Taos mountains. Have your coffee by the fire Sunday morning before enjoying another lovely breakfast and a morning of instruction. Check-out will be at 10:30 am, but the workshop continues until noon.

Our Weekend Away Retreat is priced at $2000 and includes:

Welcome cocktail + dinner Friday

Custom DIY kit + design consultation (via phone, email, or Skype)

Breakfast, lunch, & dinner Saturday

Breakfast Sunday

2 night stay in a private room (guest rooms will be assigned on a first-come first-serve basis – available room guide will be sent to you upon registration)

And expect a few extra surprises along the way!

Register early, stay late.

That dialogue started with our friends at Vena Cava and continues this week with a story and a pattern from Anna Sui.

Below are instructions for Alabama Chanin’s basic version of an Anna Sui dress pattern in coral, the newest color in our cotton-jersey fabric collection. This fabric is hand-dyed in Nashville, Tennessee, using the common madder plant, which is native to Africa, temperate Asia, and America. The dye is extracted from the roots of this plant and creates a beautiful coral color.

Get started on your own Anna Sui dress, either basic or embellished, and leave us a note about the intersection of fashion and craft in the comments section of this post by Sunday, February 19th, at midnight for a chance to win the sample dress (size 6) pictured here.

Anna Sui Vogue Pattern #V1217
1 spool Coats & Clark button craft thread
Basic sewing supplies: scissors, pins, needles, ruler, rotary cutter

Alabama Stitch Book, Alabama Studio Style or Alabama Studio Sewing + Design: All three of these books contain the basic sewing and embroidery techniques we used to make our version of this dress.

Follow the (very concise) Vogue instructions exactly as written, with the following exceptions:

Hand-sew all seams with a straight stitch and using a double strand of thread on a single layer of our Alabama Chanin medium-weight cotton jersey. We felled our seams for the dress above, but that is a matter of taste and desired style.

We made our bow 1/2 the size of the pattern piece provided because of the fabric thickness. Simply fold pattern piece #5 in half lengthwise before cutting.

For the neckline, we omitted the piping in steps 4-8 and applied our standard Alabama Chanin rib-binding with a Herringbone stitch, but any stretchable embroidery stitch (such as cross-stitch or zig-zag chain) will work as well.

We also omitted step 13 in the Vogue Pattern and chose to apply a rib-binding to the hem of our dress with a Herringbone stitch.

Finally, we eliminated the slip dress for underneath the dress as our cotton jersey fabric is thick enough that a slip is not needed.

SUPPLIES

Anna Sui Vogue Pattern #V1217
2 yards of 60”-wide 100% organic medium-weight cotton jersey or Alabama Coral Fabric for top layer
2 yards of 60”-wide 100% organic medium-weight cotton jersey or Alabama Coral Fabric for backing layer (in same color as top layer or in contrasting color – as desired)
4 spools Coats & Clark button craft thread
Alabama Chanin Anna’s Garden stencil
Textile paint
Basic sewing supplies: scissors, pins, needles, ruler, rotary cutter

Cut out your pattern pieces in the desired size from your fabric for the top layer and repeat by cutting matching pattern pieces for the backing layer. Stencil your cut top layer of the dress with the Anna’s Garden stencil and textile paint. Pin together the top and bottom layers of each pattern piece, right sides of both layers facing up. Using a double strand of button craft thread and straight stitch, embroider the Anna’s Garden pattern using Alabama Chanin’s negative reverse applique technique from Alabama Studio Sewing + Design, leaving knots exposed on the right side of the fabric.

Negative reverse applique follows the same rules as our standard reverse applique (detailed in Alabama Stitch Book and Alabama Studio Style) except you stitch 1/8” inside the stenciled line and trim 1/8” outside the stenciled line. After all of the pattern pieces are completed, sew the dress by hand using a double strand of button craft thread and following the instructions for the basic dress above.

Thank you again to Anna Sui for inspiring young designers across the globe – and for showing me a simple kindness when I needed it the most.
