Why save pop tabs?

Saving pop tabs from aluminum cans is an easy and environmentally friendly way of supporting the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House. You can store them in containers to be transported to the House and they don’t take up alot of room. This program began in Minneapolis where the community collected One Million (1,000,000) pop tabs. It has since spread to Ronald McDonald Houses throughout the country! Last year the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House collected over $17,000.00!

What do they do with the pop tabs?

The pop tabs are turned in for their recycling value after being collected by student groups, auxiliaries, service clubs (like the Fraternal Order of Eagles) and children and their families. Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern California operates both the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House which is a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill and injured children who are being treated at Sacramento-area hospitals ad Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake, a camp for children with disabilities and/or disadvantages. The proceeds collected from recycling the pop tabs go into the Adopt-A-Family fund to help subsidize the cost of families staying at the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House.

What does it take to collect pop tabs?

If you drink Soda and want to help children, it is pretty easy to collect pop tabs. Please recycle your entire aluminum can, but save the pop tab for Ronald McDonald House. A simple sandwich bag on the side of your regridgerator is enough to get you and your faily started. As your bag fills, you can turn them in at the House. For larger groups, use containers with wide mouths such as oatmeal boxex, paper milk cartons or coffee cans.

From the Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern California Website

Pop Tabs

The Pop Tab Program began when a community in Minneapolis collected one million pop tabs to recycle as a fundraiser and the trend has since spread to hundreds of Ronald McDonald Houses across the country.

A pop tab is the small metal tab on the top of aluminum beverage cans. The Sacramento Ronald McDonald House collects these pop tabs to recycle and puts these proceeds towards the Adopt-A-Family Program. This fund helps subsidize the cost of families staying at the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House.

The House receives thousands of pop tabs each year collected by families, church groups, service clubs, auxiliaries, and student organizations.

Saving pop tabs from aluminum cans is an easy and environmentally-friendly way of supporting the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House. A simple plastic bag on the side of your refrigerator is an easy way to get started. As your bag fills, you can drop them off or mail them to the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House. For larger groups, use containers with wide mouths such as oatmeal boxes, paper milk cartons and coffee cans. You can event print out our label and attach it to the side of your container with clear tape.

Sacramento Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab Label

While we do not have the storage space to collect and recycle the entire aluminum can, we do also encourage supporters to cash in their own cans and send a check with the donation to the address listed below.

For more information contact Dawn Brown at 916.734.4230. Pop Tabs do not need to be counted and can be mailed or dropped off at the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House located at 2555 49th Street, Sacramento, CA 95817.

You can visit the Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern California website at www.rmhcnc.org.

We are on the difficult road to recovery and everyone’s help will be needed in this coming year. The majority of our members have stopped coming to meetings and participating in Auxiliary Activities. When I look at the meeting attendance and participation as it is today from what it was ten years ago when I was president I could easily become disheartened by what I see. Instead, I will stay optimistic that the members want this auxiliary to survive during these difficult times. You can send your suggestions to me at the hall and I will have each one read at the auxiliary meetings. Please feel free to send me any personal notes.

I was looking forward to having our Auxiliary Grandmother be with me this year and lending her years of experience and her shoulders when needed during this year. I miss you Ann ………. .

I would like to thank everyone who attended the 2009-2010 Joint Installation of Officers and the Aerie 104th Anniversary gathering on May 30th. It looked like everyone enjoyed themselves and the food catered by Nina Walsh Catering. In addition I would like to congratulate our Jr. Past President, Ken Erdahl for his term as Worthy President and congratulations to all new officers. I am looking forward to this challenge I have placed upon myself and I hope to perform the best I can for all members. I have been working on putting together committees so that we can put them down on the calendar as quickly as possible so everyone is aware of upcoming charity functions. Also this year I really would like to see “new” volunteers for functions that we have going on at the club and to see more members at Aerie meetings. If you do not attend then your voice cannot be heard. In closing, let us remember why we joined the Alameda Eagles and again our motto is People Helping People.

Fraternally,

Cynthia Garibaldi

Description: BEST HOMETOWN PARADE 2008 Alameda Fourth of July Parade

“Everybody loves a parade, and Alameda’s annual Mayor’s Fourth of July extravaganza — always on July 4, no matter what the day, natch — attracts some 20,000 spectators, or roughly one-third of the city’s population. Everyone and then some are there to wave flags and witness color guards, marching bands, baton twirlers, classic cars, horses, politicians, veterans, and floats, floats, floats. The parade route is longer than three miles, allowing the city to claim it as the longest parade procession ever, which no one bothers to challenge. Families and friends lucky enough to live on the parade route host barbecues as the spectacle winds past, while others from Alameda and throughout the Bay Area contentedly nab spots along coveted stretches of Park Street, Grand, Central and Otis for optimal viewing. This event epitomizes Americana at its finest and is the best hometown parade going in the East Bay, no question. Makes you proud to be an American.”

The Alameda 4th of July Parade is the second longest Independence Day parade in the nation. With over 170 floats that travel a three mile route, the parade has become the central activity of the Bay Area’s Fourth of July weekend.

The parade boasts the longest route in the United States, drawing over 20,000 spectators from the region. Parade entries cross the full spectrum of Bay Area residents includes:

Equestrians

Dance troops

Floats and antique cars

A large variety of bands

The Parade Committee, as a 501c3 organization, donates to the high school and middle school bands that participate in the parade. This year the Parade Committee is looking to donate a total of $10,000 to school music programs. Sponsor participation helps assure that the costs of the parade are covered and that donations can be made to the schools’ music programs.

Many community members host front yard barbeques where their friends and family come together to watch the Parade. It is a tradition for many families to return to the same spot along the Parade route to celebrate the Fourth of July year after year.

The Mayor’s 4th of July Parade was voted the “Best Hometown Celebration” for 2007 and “Best Hometown Parade” for 2008 by the East Bay Express. They proclaimed the parade “…a bit of Kansas right here in the East Bay.”
