Big Screen Classics: THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN (Alamo Downtown)

One of the great Texas films of all time! Not on DVD!

Helen Slater and Christian Slater (unrelated, despite their roles of sister and brother) star in this indisputable '80s youth classic about a Corpus Christi teenager who becomes an outlaw in her quest for justice. Fighting under the slogan "Fair is fair," Billie Jean goes on the run from the law with her brother and best friends, becoming an unlikely hero for oppressed teens everywhere. After cutting her hair as an homage to Joan of Arc, the once demure Billie Jean transforms into an authentic Texas outlaw by taking a stand against The Man. A rousing, blood-boiling no-rules rampage in the name of anti-adult empowerment!

Screenings

Sunday, November 15, 2009
 7:40p
Wednesday, November 18, 2009
 9:20p

BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN (Alamo Downtown)

"Thrillingly alive. The best of the Sundance best!"
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"YOU CAN'T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF OF IT...ONE HELL OF A DATE MOVIE...Ingeniously structured and beautifully acted."
James Greenberg, Film Journal International

Adapted and directed by John Krasinski (THE OFFICE, AWAY WE GO), BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN is a darkly funny and disturbing exploration of men and their complex relationships with women. Based on the book by David Foster Wallace, the film features an all-star cast that includes Timothy Hutton, Ben Shenkman, Christopher Meloni, Ben Gibbard, Will Arnett, Chris Messina, Bobby Cannavale, Will Forte, Dennis O'Hare, Lou Taylor Pucci, Max Minghella, and Julianne Nicholson.

A graduate student (Nicholson) endeavors to explore the male psyche for her thesis by interviewing a cross-section of men. The men's twisted and revealing stories are juxtaposed against the backdrop of her own experience. As she begins to listen closely to the men around her, she must ultimately reconcile herself to the darkness that lies below the surface of human interactions.

Krasinski and his fine cast successfully bring the first-ever David Foster Wallace work to the big screen with a film that audiences will be talking about for a long time.

Actor/Director John Krasinski will in attendance for a select few shows on opening weekend. Click here to view those screenings.

PRAYER OF THE ROLLERBOYS in Hecklevision! (Alamo Downtown)

HeckleVision is the Action Pack's newest interactive way of enjoying a movie, and the basic premise is super simple: There's a spot at the bottom of the screen that holds five lines of text, and audience members in the theater can text in whatever they want to say about the movie while we all watch it together. Our debut HeckleVision show, a screening of the classic Lifetime Original Movie INVISIBLE CHILD, was a raging success and one of the most fun experiences we've had in the theater in a while. Unlike regular hecklers who get loud and ruin the movie for everyone, the silence of the texts mean that you don't miss a second of the hilariously bad dialog in the wonderfully cheesy movies we pick for this series, but you also have an endless supply of extra jokes enhancing the experience for you. And when those jokes aren't funny enough, of course, you can text in your own!

PRAYER OF THE ROLLERBOYS is a redux of one of our original (and failed idea) Heckler's Paradise screenings, and as we've been digging through the '90s to prep up for the 1997 Sing-Along one inexplicable trend had one perfectly inexplicable movie role - Corey Haim plays a Rollerblading pizza delivery driver in a bizarre future dystopia that is lorded over by the Rollerboys, a gang of white trench coat wearing synchronized skaters who are pushing a special sort of drug that should sterilize the poor people and lead to a brighter, Nazi-ish future. Yeah, reread that sentence and try to get a handle on what this movie is about. We're pretty sure audiences leaving the theater after it's insanely short run were the first people to coin the term, "WTF?"

Of course, don't let that dissuade you. Because by all accounts this is truly an awful movie, that doesn't stop it from being 100% AWESOME at the same time. Because everything that sounds soooo bad about it is also what makes it soooo good. For instance: Corey Haim. Rollerblades. Synchronized Rollerblading gangs. In the Future. Basically, this film is perfect cinema, and I expect all of the tweets on screen to basically be saying, "Yes! That Rollerblading guy in the trench coat is super bad ass!" Ooohhh man, I can't wait.

2012 (Alamo Village)

"We were warned."

Nobody does mass destruction like Roland Emmerich. The ID4/DAY AFTER TOMORROW/STARGATE-helmer just knows how to deliver those crumbling civilization goods, and 2012 is shaping up to be his end-of-the-world piece de resistance.

Here's what's going to happen: on December 21, 2012, the world will end. No doubt about it. And since Oliver Stone won't be here after the fact to profit from the apocalypse, Roland Emmerich's beating the apocalypse to the punch by offering up this explosive treat of things to come.

The significance of 12/21/2012 was first brought to our attention by the ancient Mayans who tipped us off by having their "Long Count" calendar end on what translates to the Western Gregorian date of December 21, 2012. The Mayans were incredibly intelligent in math and sciences, but when it came to the gentle let-down, they were all thumbs. But it's not just the ancient Mayans who thought this was our expiration date- modern, more alive scientists have thrown their smoldering hat into the ring with apocalyptic theories ranging as widely as geomagnetic reversal to galactic alignment to good ol' fashioned self-fulfilling prophecy.

This movie is going to RULE! John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Danny Glover & The End Of Times star in a must-see laundry list of all the things we shouldn't wait to fear. Start building the bunker now.

Disney's A CHRISTMAS CAROL in Digital 3D! (Alamo Village)

Charles Dickens' timeless tale of an old miser who must face Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help to bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart. The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what the world is today, and what will happen if he does not strive to be a better man. Set around Christmas, the most joyous day of the year, Scrooge realizes the sharp contrast of his own personality.

Jim Carrey plays four separate roles in this updated version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Carrey portrays Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts (Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come). His dynamic character roles keep the four characters as diverse as being played by four actors.

In a comedic look at real life events that are almost too bizarre to believe, a reporter discovers a top-secret wing of the U.S. military when he accompanies an enigmatic Special Forces operator on a mind-boggling mission.

Reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) is in search of his next big story when he encounters Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), a shadowy figure who claims to be part of an experimental U.S. military unit. According to Cassady, the New Earth Army is changing the way wars are fought. A legion of "Warrior Monks" with unparalleled psychic powers can read the enemy's thoughts, pass through solid walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. Now, the program's founder, Bill Django (Jeff Bridges), has gone missing and Cassady's mission is to find him.

Intrigued by his new acquaintance's far-fetched stories, Bob impulsively decides to tag along. When the pair tracks Django to a clandestine training camp run by renegade psychic Larry Hooper (Kevin Spacey), the reporter is trapped in the middle of a grudge match between the forces of Django's New Earth Army and Hooper's personal militia of super soldiers. In order to survive this wild adventure, Bob will have to outwit an enemy he never thought possible.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (Alamo Village)

Young, mischievous Max is sent to bed without his supper. When his bedroom turns into a magical jungle landscape filled with strange creatures, he embarks on a wild imaginary (?) adventure.

We've been waiting for the wild rumpus to start on this one since forever. We're not sure what makes us want to see this more: our nostalgic affection for writer/illustrator Maurice Sendak's nightmarish creatures or Jonze's twisted take on his illustrated, ten-sentence classic. Either way, this looks like the Movie of the Year for smart kids and/or adults who still remember what matters.
