Originally used as decorative wall hangings of the Muslim royalty of South India, Kalamkari, the hand-painted and block printed textile craft, was Persian-inspired, with the ‘Tree of Life’ as the dominant motif against a profusion of flowers, creepers and birds. The Machilipatnam ‘Mihrab’ created by master artisan P.M. Easwarudu and his father Nageswara Rao for the Festival of India in 1982 is a masterpiece of Kalamkari.Sadly Machilipatnam Kalamkari craft went into near oblivion in the early 20th century due to changing lifestyles and lack of patronage. It was resuscitated in the 1960s by visionaries such as Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay, Nelli Sethna, Pupul Jayakar and others. Painstakingly going through old Kalamkari collections and loads of forgotten blocks, and working with artisans such as Easwarudu they have revived Kalamkari.

Easwarudu, who was an integral part of this great revival, is in Chennai to participate in Craft’s Bazaar 2011, organised by the Crafts Council of India. Surrounded by his incredible oeuvre of Kalamkari bed linen, table linen, saris, yardage, scarves and stoles he speaks of his passion for Kalamkari, its present and future…

The revival of Machilipatnam Kalamkari…

By the 1960s Kalamkari had all but died out. At this juncture Kamla Deviji helped the Balyagudem Cooperative Industry, an organisation which worked with Kalamkari artisans. The craft got a further lease of life with Nelli Sethna’s intervention. She studied the craft from old manuscripts and books and got hold of ancient printing blocks. She stayed in our village for two months and exposed us to new Kalamkari formats, borders, bed sheets, table linen and saris using the old blocks. So beautiful were her formats that we only had to say “This is a Nelli Sethna design” and it would sell. I worked closely with her.

I believe the Festival of India really placed Kalamkaris centre stage…

Yes, it was in 1982. Martand Singh collected a lot of Kalamkari museum pieces and got blocks made in Mumbai based on their patterns. Martand Singh’ s team headed by Gautam Vaghela who was then Director, Design Weaver’s Centre, Mumbai, also did a lot of research on natural dyes which threw up many new vegetable dyes, shades and tones. Martand also developed three new designs for the Festival of India’s ‘Vishvakarma Exhibition’. One of them was the Machlipatnam Mihrab which you see behind me.

How did the project take off?

Martand Singh and his team brought the blocks and patterns to my village in search of artisans. My father and I did the job. We learnt to use the old block patterns and also customise them to suit clients’ tastes. We developed new blocks, which together with the expanded colour palette have given new life to the craft.

Do you use all these techniques?

Yes, my saris, wall hangings, fabric and linen are a mix of old and new techniques of colours and motifs. We continue to adopt new trends in blocks and formats.

What is the state of Kalamkari block print today?

Not entirely satisfactory. Many units have sprung up. They make cheap screen printed Kalamkari saris, fabric etc. There is adulteration in colours and patterns. Many from the younger generation have left in search of more paying jobs. Government schemes to help craftsmen hardly reach the Kalamkari artisan.

Chanderi fabrics are known for their sheer texture, light weight and a glossy transparency that sets them apart from textiles produced en masse in factories. Traditionally, the fabric was woven using very fine hand spun cotton warps and wefts, which accounted for its delicate texture.

It was spun as fine as 300 counts, and was as prized amongst cotton fabrics as the famed muslins of Dhaka. However, the Industrial Revolution sounded the first death knell on this beautiful textile. The British imported cheaper 120 to 200 count cotton from Manchester, which greatly eroded the market for the more expensive Chanderi cloth.
Traditionally, the quality of the gold thread used distinguished Chanderi saris from cheaper imitations. Most Chanderis have a rich gold border and two lines of gold on the pallu. Some have gold checks or little motifs (known as Butis) all over.

One technique of block printing used often in almost every Brass Tacks collection is the mud-resist ( or “dabu”) block printing of Rajasthan. This technique allows for patterns to appear as translucent- showing off another pattern printed below it. Also in this method, several colours can be used on a fabric for various parts of a print.

In order to make the fabric absorb dyes, the fabric is first dipped into a mordant. In natural dyeing units, a natural mordant made from the seeds of the Chebulic myrobalan tree are used. After drying the fabric, the first stage of printing is done. Wooden blocks, carved by hand, are dipped into dyes and then printed on the fabric. The first stage of printing is sometimes done with chemical dyes, but originally done with natural dyes. To understand this process, let’s say the print was done in red with alizarine.

The second stage is printing a “dabu” resist onto the block. This resist is a mixture of river bed clay, slaked lime, tree gum and wheat powder. The resist covers the previously printed block so that when the entire fabric is dipped into another dye (for example Indigo) everything except the block gets coloured. Finally when the fabric is dried and washed, the pattern revealed is an indigo dyed fabric with prints in red.

More complication printing can be done with dyes mixed into the “dabu” mixture and printed on top of an existing print. The effect of this is a semi- translucent print through which you can see the underlying print.

Most printing done by hand does not permeate into the fabric fibres in the way that dyeing fabric does. For this reason, even if the hand block printing is done on mill made fabric and machine washed, the fabric should always be dried in the shade to avoid the sun’s bleaching effect.

Churidars (Hindi: चूड़ीदार), or more properly churidar pyjamas, are tightly fitting trousers worn by both men and women in South Asia and Central Asia. Churidars are a variant of the common salwar pants. Salwars are cut wide at the top and narrow at the ankle. Churidars narrow more quickly, so that contours of the leg are revealed. They are usually cut on the bias (at a 45 degree angle to the grain of the fabric) which makes them naturally stretchy. Stretch is important when pants are closefitting. They are also longer than the leg and sometimes finish with a tightly fitting buttoned cuff at the ankle. The excess length falls into folds and appears like a set of bangles resting on the ankle (hence 'churidar'; 'churi': bangle, 'dar': like).
When the wearer is sitting, the extra material is the "ease" that makes it possible to bend the legs and sit comfortably. The word "churidar" is from Hindi and made its way into English only in the 20th century.^[1] Earlier, tight fitting churidar-like pants worn in India were referred to by the British as Moghul breeches, long-drawers, or mosquito drawers.

The churidar is usually worn with a kameez (tunic) by women or a kurta (a loose overshirt) by men, or they can form part of a bodice and skirt ensemble.

Kalamkari refers to a method of painting natural dyes onto cotton or silk fabric with a bamboo pen or kalam. The name kalamkari translates as pen (kalam) work (kari) in Hindi/Urdu, and was most likely derived from trade relationships between Persian and Indian merchants as early as the 10th century CE.

European merchants also had names for this type of fabric decoration: the Portugese called it pintado, the Dutch used the name sitz, and the British preferred chintz.

Merchants and traders from around the world used Indian textiles, the majority of which were kalamkari, as a currency in the Spice Trade. European and East Asian markets demanded spices like nutmeg, clove, and pepper as well as aromatic woods and oils, which were available almost exclusively in parts of Southeast Asia and Indonesia. The Southeast Asian and Indonesian markets, on the other hand, demanded Indian textiles particularly for ritual and ceremonial use. Thus a triangular trading system was established that implicated Indian textiles in a larger global exchange of goods and products. As time went on, Indian textiles were seen as luxury items in themselves, and a variety of textiles and textile-related products were sold to merchants throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Relationships between India and parts of Europe through this exchange of textiles ultimately led to the imperialistic agenda of the British Empire through colonialism.

The main artist families involved in kalamkari during the 19th century were members of the Balaji jati, a community traditionally involved in agricultural work and small industry. Today, there are over 300 individuals in and around Sri Kalahasti involved in some aspect of kalamkari work, from preparing cloth and dyes, to design motifs and format layout, to final painting and execution. Around the middle of the 20th century, the popularity of kalamkari in Sri Kalahasti waned to the point of near disappearance, with most artists focusing on agricultural work and other local occupations. At this point, around the late 1950s, kalamkari received government attention and sponsorship, through the intervention of art activist, Kamaladevi Chattopadyaya.

In 1957, Kamaladevi Chattopadyaya helped establish a government-run kalamkari training center that focused on teaching a new generation of artists the techniques and stylistic vocabulary of kalamkari. The ebb and flow of kalamkari popularity continues to plague the artistic community at Sri Kalahasti, however at the moment there is an upsurge in interest in the art form by designers, NGOs and entrepreneurs living and working in nearby cities. A range of products are now created using kalamkari cloth and are available for sale at craft exhibitions, small boutiques and from the artists directly. In addition to the traditional style narrative wall hangings artists also create hand painted saris, dupattas, personal items and home accessories.

The earlier chintz is defined as Indian cotton cloth on which a pattern has been produced by hand drawing with a bamboo (kalam) and dyeing with mordants and resists. In some later examples, block printing was combined with hand drawn pen work (Kalamkari).

Chintz would usually have been burnished with a shell or beaten with wooden mallets to produce a shiny surface, but this finish has worn off almost all historic examples. Chintz textiles were used in Europe, especially in Britain and the Netherlands, from the early seventeenth century to early nineteenth, when the availability of mechanized copies put an end to the trade in hand printed cloths from India.

Chintz

Since the late nineteenth century, 'chintz' has come to mean any floral printed furnishing fabric, made of cotton or linen, and often glazed. It's origins as a hand-drawn, mordant and resist dyed cotton fabric from India are often forgotten.

Origin of Chintz

Most of the earlier chintz were made in south-east India, in the area that came to be known by Europeans as the Coromandel Coast. This name derives from Cholamandalam or realm of the Cholas, the dynasty that ruled what is now Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, during the 10 to 13th centuries. Printed and painted cottons, often referred to as chintz by western observers and traders were also made in other parts of India, with the towns of Sironj and Burhanpur in Central India being mentioned as producing chintz of good quality, but those from the northern part of the Coromandel Coastal area have always been acknowledged as being the best.

As well as the centuries old skills of the local artists and dyers, this area was the source of the best red dye, called chay (Latin: Oldenlandia umbellata). The coastal areas of the Krishna river delta were particularly well suited to the cultivation of chay and as a result there were many villages in the area producing what the East India Company called 'chay goods'- that is cloths that were dyed red, such as handkerchiefs and lungis, a tradition that has ended only recently, since Chirala was the last place making red dyed Telia rumals for export to the Middle East at the end of the 20th century.

The delta area also had abundant, flowing water for rinsing the dyed cloths, and was rich in calcium from decomposing seashells, which helped fix the dye. These factors combined to make reds of unsurpassed brilliance and fastness, ad this together with the finest indigo blue, brought from nearby areas of cultivation, captivated the western market and put chintz at the center of a revolution in dress and furnishing in the 17th and 18th centuries.

There is very little information on which centers of cotton painting produced the finest chintz: as with so many other trade goods, textiles were often associated with the port from which they were exported rather than their place of actual production. Masulipatnam (modern Machlipatnam) was the main point of export, being already established as a thriving port under the Golconda kingdom.

The Process of making Chintz

The many processes that go towards making an elaborately patterned and many coloured chintz fabric could take several weeks to complete.

First plain cotton cloth was procured that would have been woven in one of the many weaving villages in the Coromandel hinterland, although the yarn would probably have been brought from other parts of the Deccan plateau.

The cloth was partially bleached and steeped in a solution of water, buffalo milk and myrabolan fruit.The fatty buffalo milk ensured that he mordants did not seep beyond the required areas and the astringent myrobolan reinforced the action of the mordant.

The cloth was dried and beaten with wooden mallets for smoothing.

The design was drawn on the smoothed surface with charcoal.

The outlines of the areas to be coloured red in the finished textile were then painted with alum mordant solution with a bamboo pen or kalam and those to be black with an iron mordant.

The cloth was then boiled in a solution of chay root.

The washing and bleaching was then repeated with dung, steeped in myrabolan and buffalo milk.

Any white lines that were to be reserved against a red background were drawn in with wax.

I have admired this ancient art form for a long time but my interest in woodblock printing was renewed by these intricately carved wooden blocks that my sister brought back from a recent trip to India.

Woodblock printing originated in China, first on fabric and later, on paper. It was widely used in Japan to produce "motifs of landscapes, tales from history, the theatre and pleasure quarters" such as those by Hiroshige....

In India, woodblock printing on fabric was widely practiced and large quantities were exported to Europe. Many artisan communities such as Sanganer and Bagru in Rajasthan, India still practice this art form.

Indigofera tinctoria bears the common name True indigo. The plant was one of the original sources of indigo dye.
True indigo is a shrub one to two meters high. Dye is obtained from the processing of the plant's leaves. They are soaked in water and fermented in order to convert the glycoside indican naturally present in the plant to the blue dye indigotin. The precipitate from the fermented leaf solution is mixed with a strong base such as lye, pressed into cakes, dried, and powdered. The powder is then mixed with various other substances to produce different shades of blue and purple.
