While it's not yet officially fall, I'm definitely ready to start thinking about all the wonderful things that come with the season -- all things pumpkin, apple cider, pretty leaves, campfires, and, especially, the cool, crisp weather.

The Light Between Oceans - Movie Review

I was invited to a free advanced screening of the movie The Light Between Oceans c/o The Owens Group. No compensation was received and I was not obligated to write a positive review. All opinions expressed in this post are my own.

The Light Between Oceans is a new movie based on the best-selling novel by M.L. Stedman. The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz.

After returning from war, Tom takes on the lonely job of lighthouse keeper. He soon meets Isabel who opens his heart to the idea of love. They marry and begin a happy life together on the secluded, uninhabited island of Janus, where Tom continues to work the lighthouse.

One day, a mysterious boat comes to shore. Inside the boat, Tom and Isabel discover an infant, alive and well. With no idea who the baby belongs to or how she came to be in a boat in the middle of the ocean, Tom and Isabel decide to bring the baby up as their own. Later, revelations come to light about the identity of the child and Tom and Isabel must make some very difficult decisions.

First, let me say that I recently read this novel and loved it. I can also say that I enjoyed the movie as much as the book. The love that develops between Tom and Isabel is very deep and I thought it was portrayed so well by Fassbender and Vikander. Vikander is exceptional - so much emotion and very convincing as Isabel. I could see her winning awards for this role. Tom is somewhat hardened and broken from the war, but Isabel is able to reach him and show that it's possible to have a life of happiness and passion.

The story takes place in Western Australia and spans over many years. As viewers, we get to see how the consequences of their decision to raise the baby as their own play out and how it affects many people. The movie goes along kind of slowly and quietly, but nonetheless, does a beautiful job of telling this moving and heartbreaking tale.

The Light Between Oceans opens in theaters today, September 2nd.
It is rated PG-13

College Kid Check-In: Girl vs Boy

Two of our kids are now living away at college.

Our daughter, Shelby, is a junior attending a college about two hours from home. Here she is just after we moved her into her first apartment across the street from campus.

Our son, Connor, is a freshman living on campus about 30 minutes from home. Here he is on his rainy move-in day.

They are both just wrapping up their first week of classes so I decided to check in. I sent a text to each of them, asking how things are going.

Here's how Shelby responded:
After texting Shelby, she called me back within an hour and we proceeded to talk for almost two hours. Two hours! She told me in detail about her classes, teachers, and classmates. She talked about some of the assignments and projects she will be doing - even sending me a link to one of the articles she had studied in her journalism class. She described how she is adjusting to living in her own apartment for the first time -- what she's been eating and how she hasn't quite yet figured out what to buy at the grocery, how she's been sleeping, how fast their trash cans fill up and have to be taken to the dumpster, how often she has been washing the dishes, and how she finally figured out where the mailboxes are located. She talked about her roommates. We discussed her future plans and that she is thinking of adding some type of art minor to her program of study if she can fit it in. Shelby told me where she has been parking versus sometimes walking to class. We talked about the new job she will soon be starting and how she is a little nervous because she has never worked in the food industry. I was able to catch up on what some of her friends have been up to as well as hear about some of the new international friends she has met (including the "beautiful guy from Scotland" and the "hilarious guy from Taiwan"). As I said, this conversation lasted for almost two hours and this mama relished every second. This is such an exciting time for her and I love that she wants to share so much of it with me.

Here's how Connor responded:
He replied to my text with a one word response...."fine"

Yep, that's all I got from him. He's fine.

He moved away from home for the first time and began his first semester as a college freshman.

But, everything's "fine".

You gotta love it!

With hopes of a brighter future, young Eilis Lacey leaves her family behind in Ireland for a new life in New York City. At first, she feels utterly alone and homesick, but soon meets a young fellow and romance begins to bloom. Just as she is beginning to feel at home in Brooklyn, Eilis is called back to Ireland. There, she must choose between two very different lives in two very different places.

Okay...I have to say that this film was so, so good that it just may be one of my very favorites of all time. Definitely the best I've seen this year.

Brooklyn received Oscar nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay as well as numerous other nominations. These are all well deserved!

The story is happy, sad, funny, sweet, romantic, and incredibly moving. I cried at least 5 times while watching (you know how I love a good tear-jerker). Everything about this movie appealed to me -- the time period, the setting, the characters, the story -- it's really that good and I highly recommend you check it out.

Rated PG - 13 for a scene of sexuality and brief strong language.

My New Favorite Sunscreen from Babo Botanicals

It feels like we have been in the "dog days of summer" all summer long! The heat! The sun! It's been pretty brutal here in Kentucky. While this hot and humid weather is definitely not my favorite, I still find myself taking part in outdoor activities - lounging in the pool, hitting the farmers' markets and our local Homearama event, attending the picnic for my son's fishing team, and even joining my son for a few Pokemon hunting expeditions. I haven't always been the best about wearing sunscreen when I'm out and about, but in the last few years, I've tried to be better.

When it comes to sunscreens, there are about a gazillion choices out there. More and more, I've been reading about how many of these popular sunscreens actually contain things that are not so good for you; ingredients that are toxic even. Yikes!

In my reading and searching for safer sunscreens, I came across the company Babo Botanicals. The packaging and website was super-adorable and made me want to learn more about them.

Their products are made on a family-run, certified organic farm using the power of plants and botanicals. I was happy to find that their sunscreens are hypoallergenic, recommended for super-sensitive skin, and can be used on babies, kids, and grown-ups. They contain Zinc Oxide (said to be the safest and most effective sunscreen ingredient) as the active ingredient. Babo Botanicals sunscreens are also free of:

Sulfates
Parabens
Phthalates
Synthetic
Fragrances and Dyes
Sodium Chloride
Formaldehyde
MEA/DEA/TEA
High Allergy Nut Oils
Soy and Dairy
Gluten

That was enough to convince me that I wanted to try this sunscreen out for myself. I purchased the Sheer Zinc Continuous Spray Sunscreen w/SPF 30 ($22) and also the Nutri-Soothe Lip Treatment w/SPF 15 ($9.95) because I can never have enough of a good, protective lip balm.

I have been using both products this summer and absolutely love them! Besides all of the good stuff I mentioned above, here are a few other things I really like about these products --

*The Sheer Zinc Spray Sunscreen is incredibly lightweight and goes on mostly clear. You have to shake the can well and frequently, but it is very easy to apply. Some of those other spray sunscreens choke you up when applying and make you feel like you're in a cloud of fumes and chemicals. Not the Babo Botanicals - it is unscented and so sheer -- it goes on like a dream.

*It does not feel heavy or greasy at all. I even noticed that my skin felt silky and smooth hours later after applying. It is water and sweat resistant (my own personal preference is to apply more often than the recommended 80 minutes, especially if I am in and out of the pool, not only for sunburn protection but because it just feels so dang nice going on).

*The Coconut Apple Nutri-Soothe Lip Balm is AMAZING! It smells and feels so yummy on your lips and contains organic avocado and jojoba oils as well as organic shea butter and cocoa seed butter. Good stuff!

Movie Trailer Tuesday - McFarland, USA

McFarland, USA is a movie from Disney that created a lot of internet buzz when it came out last year. From the previews, I thought it looked like a great story and wanted to check it out, but somehow never got around to it. I finally caught it on tv the other night and watched it with my husband. It definitely did not disappoint! This movie is a moving, feel-good story that the entire family can enjoy. By the way, it is based on a true story which makes it even more inspiring.

Jim White and his family move to the small town of McFarland where he has taken a new job at the local high school. After a bumpy start, Jim starts to see some real potential in a group of Latino students and convinces the principal to let them form a cross country team - a first for their school. Through their hard work and dedication, they are able to form a bond and reach for goals they've never before thought possible.

Cool Finds For A Day At The Pool

It's already the latter part of May and we have not yet been able to open our pool due to so many rainy days. I'm someone who actually enjoys rainy days (most of the time) but I think I've had my fill for awhile and I'm now ready for some clear & sunny, warm days.

Our third-born, Connor, will be graduating high school at the beginning of June and we will be hosting a graduation party at our home - so we have lots of work to do to get the pool and backyard ready and in tip-top shape. Today was the first time that we had decent weather and the guys spent most of the day working outside. One step closer to some fun, family time playing in the pool!
