Where Craft Beer Meets Comfort Food in Soldotna, Alaska

If you’re craving a place that blends the warmth of a local hangout with the bold flavors of craft beer and hearty food, Kenai River Brewing Company is your go-to spot. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this place offers a welcoming vibe that feels like home.

The Beer: Bold, Balanced, and Brewed On-Site

Kenai River Brewing is known for its Skilak Scottish Ale, Sunken Island IPA, and Peninsula Brewer’s Reserve, among others. One of our personal favorites is the Sunken Island IPA! Each brew is often using local ingredients and always with a nod to the rugged Alaskan spirit. Not sure what to try? Go for a “flight”—it’s the perfect way to sample a variety of styles, from hoppy IPAs to smooth porters.

The Food: Pub Fare with Alaskan Flair

The menu is packed with pub fare that pairs perfectly with their beers. Think:

Beer-battered halibut tacos with house-made slaw

Smoked brisket sandwiches slow-cooked to perfection

Loaded nachos with local reindeer sausage

And don’t skip the pretzel bites with beer cheese—trust us.

The Vibe: Rustic, Relaxed, and Family-Friendly

The interior is a mix of rustic wood, industrial touches, and Alaskan charm. There’s plenty of seating, both indoors and out, and the patio is a must-visit in the summer. It’s dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and just plain friendly. Live music, trivia nights, and community events keep the energy high and the locals coming back.

Whether you’re winding down after a day on the river or just looking for a great meal and a cold pint, Kenai River Brewing Company delivers. We at Drifting On The Fly highly recommend a stop here….one of our favorite places to eat! Cheers!

As the long summer days begin to shorten, a quiet transformation happens within Alaska’s rivers and streams. The brilliant red tide of sockeye salmon—those brilliant red-colored fish that have dominated the waters since early summer—is beginning to fade. We have had an epic sockeye season, with nearly every guest of ours limiting out their catch. Now, the silver salmon, also known as coho, are making their grand entrance with power, speed, and a whole lot of attitude. These flashy chrome cohos are a thrill to hook, fight, and catch, not to mention how tasty they are!

While sockeye salmon are the summer spectacle, silver salmon are the fall fireworks! Silver salmon don’t just arrive—they burst onto the scene with their sleek, aggressive, and acrobatic manners. These fish are a favorite among sport anglers for their fight and flair. Their run typically begins in mid to late August and peaks through September, offering a thrilling second act to Alaska’s salmon season.

The arrival of coho brings a renewed sense of excitement to the water and are known for their unpredictable strikes and aerial leaps, making every catch a story worth telling.

So as the sockeye bid their crimson farewell, we welcome the silver salmon with open arms and sharpened hooks. The rivers are alive, the fish are running, and the adventure is waiting just around the bend. Tight Lines!

Tucked away on the spit in Homer, the Salty Dawg Saloon is an iconic watering hole, with its weathered exterior and eclectic interior, has been a gathering spot for locals and visitors since established in 1957.

The Salty Dawg Saloon’s history is as colorful as the dollar bills that adorn its walls. Originally built as one of the first cabins in Homer in 1897, the building has served various purposes over the years, including a post office, railroad station, and grocery store. It wasn’t until the 1950s that it transformed into the beloved saloon it is today.

The walls are covered with thousands of signed dollar bills (sometimes larger bills!), left by patrons from all over the world as a memento of their visit. Even yours truly has left a signed memento attached to the wall!

One of the most cherished traditions at the Salty Dawg Saloon is the signing and hanging of dollar bills. Patrons write their names, messages, or drawings on the bills before stapling them to the walls or ceiling. This tradition has resulted in a unique and ever-growing tapestry of memories that covers nearly every inch of the saloon.

Fun Fact: The Salty Dawg Saloon caught the attention of various television shows over the years. It has been featured on popular television programs, including the shows “Deadliest Catch”, “Man v. Food”, and “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.”

The Salty Dawg Saloon is more than just a bar; it’s a piece of Alaskan history. If you’re in Homer, a visit to the Salty Dawg Saloon is an experience you won’t want to miss.

What our Guides do: Once the fish are caught, our guides will fillet them (which includes removing the head, and guts, leaving behind the prime cuts of meat), and after the trip is over, it is important to quickly transport your catch to a local processing facility to ensure the fish remain fresh.

Packaging: After filleting, the fish are packaged. Depending on the client’s request, they may be vacuum-sealed, frozen, or canned. Packaging is done with care to maintain the quality and freshness of the fish.

With fishing season in full swing, there can be a lot of activity going on at our boat launch sites; however, with the excitement of fishing comes the responsibility of being mindful of the local wildlife. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and respectful while enjoying Alaska’s natural wonders.

Understanding Wildlife

Alaska is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including bears, moose, and various other animals. These creatures often frequent areas near water, making boat launches a common spot for wildlife encounters. Bears, in particular, are known to fish in rivers and streams, while moose might be seen grazing near the water’s edge. Often times, the coloration of wildlife helps them blend in well with their surroundings and are easily overlooked until you are right next to them.

Safety Tips for Boat Launches

Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings. Look for signs of wildlife activity, such as tracks or scat, and listen for unusual sounds.

Keep a Safe Distance: If you spot wildlife, maintain a safe distance. Use binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens to observe animals without disturbing them.

Secure Your Food and Gear: Bears have an excellent sense of smell and are attracted to food. Make sure to store all food and scented items.

Travel in Groups: There’s safety in numbers. Traveling with others can help deter wildlife from approaching.

Make Noise: When moving through areas where visibility is limited, make noise to alert wildlife of your presence. This can help prevent surprising an animal at close range.

Respecting Wildlife

We love our wildlife, so respecting them means not only keeping your distance but also avoiding actions that could disrupt their natural behavior. Never feed wildlife, as this can create dangerous situations for both animals and humans. By staying vigilant and respecting the local wildlife, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
