This year, the Kenai River Professional Guide Association (KRPGA) is making the season even more exciting with their 2025 Summer Raffle — a chance to win incredible prizes while supporting the health and future of one of Alaska’s most iconic rivers.

While sockeye salmon are the summer spectacle, silver salmon are the fall fireworks! Silver salmon don’t just arrive—they burst onto the scene with their sleek, aggressive, and acrobatic manners.  These fish are a favorite among sport anglers for their fight and flair. Their run typically begins in mid to late August and peaks through September, offering a thrilling second act to Alaska’s salmon season.

The arrival of coho brings a renewed sense of excitement to the water and are known for their unpredictable strikes and aerial leaps, making every catch a story worth telling.

So as the sockeye bid their crimson farewell, we welcome the silver salmon with open arms and sharpened hooks. The rivers are alive, the fish are running, and the adventure is waiting just around the bend.  Tight Lines!

The Salty Dawg Saloon’s history is as colorful as the dollar bills that adorn its walls.  Originally built as one of the first cabins in Homer in 1897, the building has served various purposes over the years, including a post office, railroad station, and grocery store. It wasn’t until the 1950s that it transformed into the beloved saloon it is today.

The walls are covered with thousands of signed dollar bills (sometimes larger bills!), left by patrons from all over the world as a memento of their visit.  Even yours truly has left a signed memento attached to the wall!

One of the most cherished traditions at the Salty Dawg Saloon is the signing and hanging of dollar bills. Patrons write their names, messages, or drawings on the bills before stapling them to the walls or ceiling. This tradition has resulted in a unique and ever-growing tapestry of memories that covers nearly every inch of the saloon.

Fun Fact:  The Salty Dawg Saloon caught the attention of various television shows over the years. It has been featured on popular television programs, including the shows “Deadliest Catch”, “Man v. Food”, and “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.”

The Processing Journey

1. What our Guides do: Once the fish are caught, our guides will fillet them (which includes removing the head, and guts, leaving behind the prime cuts of meat), and after the trip is over, it is important to quickly transport your catch to a local processing facility to ensure the fish remain fresh.
2. Packaging: After filleting, the fish are packaged. Depending on the client’s request, they may be vacuum-sealed, frozen, or canned. Packaging is done with care to maintain the quality and freshness of the fish.

Understanding Wildlife

Alaska is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including bears, moose, and various other animals. These creatures often frequent areas near water, making boat launches a common spot for wildlife encounters. Bears, in particular, are known to fish in rivers and streams, while moose might be seen grazing near the water’s edge.  Often times, the coloration of wildlife helps them blend in well with their surroundings and are easily overlooked until you are right next to them.

Safety Tips for Boat Launches

• Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings. Look for signs of wildlife activity, such as tracks or scat, and listen for unusual sounds.
• Keep a Safe Distance: If you spot wildlife, maintain a safe distance. Use binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens to observe animals without disturbing them.
• Secure Your Food and Gear: Bears have an excellent sense of smell and are attracted to food. Make sure to store all food and scented items.
• Travel in Groups: There’s safety in numbers. Traveling with others can help deter wildlife from approaching.
• Make Noise: When moving through areas where visibility is limited, make noise to alert wildlife of your presence. This can help prevent surprising an animal at close range.

If you’re an angler, there’s no better place to be right now than the Kenai Peninsula. The sockeye salmon fishing has been nothing short of amazing!  The Kenai Peninsula, located in southcentral Alaska, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. But what truly sets it apart is its world-class fishing opportunities.

Sockeye salmon, also known as red salmon, typically start their run in mid-June and continue through July, making this the perfect time to cast your line. This year, the numbers have been great, with plenty of fish to go around.

Tips for a Successful Fishing Trip

1. Make sure you have the right gear. A medium to heavy action rod, a good quality reel, and plenty of strong line are essential if your bringing your own equipment, but don’t worry, we have you covered if you don’t have your own.
2. Always have your fishing license (and King stamp, if needed) before you head out.  Fishing licenses can be readily found online, directly at the Alaska Fish and Game offices, in local outdoor stores, and many other places.
3. If you’re new to the area or to salmon fishing, consider giving us a call to book a trip and gain the necessary knowledge and skills to catch different fish species. Our guides are some of the best and have the knowledge and know the techniques to help you have a successful trip.
