Automobile manufacturers generally warrant their vehicles to remain free of defect in manufacture or workmanship for a certain mileage or time period. Whether an automaker will honor a warranty claim depends on the vehicle owner providing proper maintenance for the vehicle. For this reason, it is important for vehicle owners to maintain maintenance records. Proper maintenance includes installing appropriate oil and filters.

Synthetic Motor Oil

Automakers cannot deny warranty claims solely on the basis of using synthetic motor oil, and they cannot specify a certain oil brand to be used in their vehicles. Instead, they require the oil meets the appropriate API, ACEA or OEM performance classification, or equivalent, and SAE viscosity grade specified in the owner’s manual.  Many modern vehicles are factory filled with synthetic motor oils and the manufacturers encourage continued use of synthetic motor oils in order to achieve maximum performance.  Many other automobile manufacturers neither recommend nor discourage the use of synthetic motor oils, requiring only that the oil meets a certain performance classification, or equivalent, and viscosity grade.

Extended Drain Intervals

Automakers may not void warranties based solely on an owner’s practice of extending oil drain intervals. Dealership personnel and district managers may be unaware of the serviceability of synthetic oils over an extended period, but they may not summarily dismiss a warranty claim based on the owner’s practice of changing oil at extended intervals.  To do so does not disprove a defect in manufacture or workmanship as the immediate cause of failure. Vehicle owners may appeal to a factory representative if the dealership and district manager do not satisfactorily settle the warranty claim. Factory representatives appreciate the value of used oil analysis and do consider preventive maintenance oil analysis reports in their evaluations of warranty claims, while post-failure oil analysis is critically important to the disposition of a warranty claim. Their findings pull more weight than the opinions of dealerships or district managers.  If used engine oil is discarded without an independent analysis, the dealership and vehicle manufacturer lose their evidence to support a claim that the oil, and not a mechanical problem, caused the failure.

For example, sludge may be formed through several avenues, not all related to the oil’s performance. Antifreeze contamination or nitration due to poor electronic sensor performance may cause sludge, and both may be directly related to a defect in vehicle manufacture or workmanship, but clearly neither may be blamed on the oil. Vehicle manufacturers base their owner’s manual maintenance recommendations on their own research and to best protect their equipment based upon lubricants of varying quality, reliability and value in the marketplace. A move toward extended drain intervals is in progress now. Ford extended its recommended drain interval to 10,000 miles in normal service conditions, while GM has been recommending increased intervals when indicated by its oil monitoring system.

Amsoil Warranty Specifics

• Any lubricant meeting performance specifications, or equivalent, and viscosity may be used.

Vehicle manufacturers describe lubricants by their viscosity grade and service classification (API, ACEA or OEM). API classifications are defined by the Tripartite Committee, composed of the American Petroleum Institute, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society for Testing and Materials. All AMSOIL synthetic motor oils state their SAE viscosity grade and API performance classification on the product container, and all are recommended for
the highest performance classification for their application. 

If personnel at a vehicle dealership claim that a vehicle warranty is void simply by using AMSOIL synthetic motor oil, obtain this statement in writing and send a copy to AMSOIL INC. AMSOIL will follow-up with the dealership.

• The vehicle manufacturer may not specify by brand name the products you may use in your vehicle.

The Magnuson-Moss Act is a U.S. federal law which states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product, including lubricants, unless that part is provided by the manufacturer free of charge.  To do otherwise constitutes an infringement upon free trade.

If any representative of the vehicle dealership or manufacturer informs you that you must use a specific brand of lubricant or filter, obtain a written statement to that effect and send a copy to AMSOIL INC. AMSOIL will call the entity directly to correct the situation.

• Cause of failure is paramount to warranty claim payment.

Vehicle manufacturers warrant their products to be free of defect in manufacture or workmanship. All claims must be covered unless a vehicle manufacturer proves a failure is lubricant-related. The manufacturer may not arbitrarily blame a failure on the consumer’s practice of changing oil at extended intervals.

• Verbal notification of refusal to honor a claim is insufficient.

The refusal should be in writing and must state the specific reason a claim has been refused. If you still think a failure is due to a defect in vehicle manufacture or workmanship, contact the dealership, district manager, manufacturer or arbitrator.

• The AMSOIL limited warranty assumes protection where the vehicle warranty stops.

AMSOIL offers protection to its customers through the AMSOIL limited warranty. Customers following AMSOIL recommendations are protected by the AMSOIL limited warranty if they experience a failure caused by an AMSOIL product.

• Customers are covered.

As long as customers maintain their vehicles properly and follow either the vehicle manufacturer recommendations or AMSOIL recommendations, their vehicles are warranted against failure by either the vehicle manufacturer or AMSOIL INC. In the unlikely event of an AMSOIL lubrication-related issue, the AMSOIL limited warranty covers the cost to repair or replace the damaged components.

The Latest Buzz On Oil Drain Intervals

Every now and then over the past several years I go online to find pictures of my first car, a 1961 white Mercury Meteor with a black interior. I loved that car, and could tell you a lot of stories about all the places it took me.

My dad brought it home the day I got my license. I was 17, which in New Jersey was the legal age at the time. The car had hit a wall at an angle, crumpling the right front end, smashing the headlight, but not disturbing anything in the engine compartment. What a contrast to today’s cars which can fling shattered plastic across half the universe upon even a minor impact. Dad and I chained the car to a telephone pole, yanked out the wrinkles, replaced the lights… and voila! I had a “new car” for $125.

Last month I found on YouTube a 30 second television commercial for that Meteor. This was a car of the future, they said. Stylish, yet affordable. And “4,000 miles between oil changes,” the announcer exclaimed, the numeral 4000 superimposed upon the screen.

A 4,000 mile oil drain interval, can you believe it? And why didn’t something like this catch on? Changing oil was not the highlight of most motorists’ lives, especially in those early days before fast oil change facilities sprang up like mushrooms.

Against this backdrop my interest was peaked by a June story in USA Today regarding Jiffy Lube’s new position on drain intervals. Throughout the week the story received attention in all of the major lube related enewsletters, and even gained the attention of publications like Time magazine. It was a pretty big deal to many of these folks.

The Time.com story begins,
“Today, automakers are more likely to recommend that owners of new cars need to change the oil in their vehicles every 5,000, or even 10,000 miles. So why do some quickie lube service stations keep pushing the one-size-fits-all mantra of ‘three months or 3,000 miles’?”

It’s clear from the tone that the editors at Time do not have the highest respect for our quick lube industry, nor for the oil companies that feed the channel. Sadly, bad press from certain kinds of stories has a lingering effect, tarnishing many companies’ good reputations and earnest desires to do what is right by their customers.

Once the industry relinquishes its insistence on a 3,000 mile oil change, many good things can happen. Here are a few of them.

First, by educating motorists about what their owners’ manuals teach regarding oil change intervals we enhance our own credibility as a reliable source of information regarding their cars. I know a magazine editor who knew that her car carried a 7500 mile oil change recommendation, but the oil change shop insisted on placing that 3,000 mile sticker on her windshield. This kind of action undercuts everyone’s veracity, leading people to think we’re pre-disposed to gouging.

In an increasingly complex world motorists are desperately wanting to know who they can trust. Has the oil change industry’s reputation been damaged beyond repair by its overlong adherence to a 3,000 mile oil drain recommendation? If nothing else, Jiffy Lube’s new position on drain intervals is a move in the right direction.

I’m not going to stand here and throw stones at people who were pushing the 3,000 mile oil change. Old ideas are held on to because they are familiar and people feel comfortable holding them. Besides, conventional crude really did have problems as the bi-products of combustion caused sludge and varnish to gum up engines. Anyone who has worked on cars for any amount has seen what a gunked engine looks like.

I do, however, take issue with those who denied that there was another class of oil with superior performance attributes, a class of oil that resisted breakdown and kept engines cleaner longer.

Twelve years ago or more I wrote about a two-tier drain interval recommendation which would allow quick lubes to maintain a 3,000 mile oil change recommendation for conventional petroleum while acknowledging and promoting a longer drain interval for premium synthetic oils. Certain people criticized this notion because it was complicated. It would be better to just have a single recommendation they said, and the proponents of a 3,000 mile oil drain distanced themselves from this idea.

Today some of these same people have no problem stating we should educate consumers about normal and severe service, an even more complicated task than the original recommendation with regard to conventional and synthetic at alternative drain intervals.

The second good thing about the Jiffy Lube news is that we may begin to see a less adversarial relationship between the oil industry and the auto manufacturers. Honesty is the basis of trust.

The internet has become a game changer for many industries, and ours is no different. There is a new demand for a higher level of transparency than ever before. When leading auto websites like Edmunds.com are publishing articles about insider tricks to rip off customers, you know there’s only one route to go here. Integrity is what consumers are looking for.

COMPATIBILITY

SERVICE LIFE

• Severe Service(4) – Up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
• In all non-gasoline-fueled vehicle applications, extend the oil change interval according to oil analysis or follow the OEM* drain interval.

(1) Engines operating under modified conditions (non-stock) are excluded from extended drain recommendations. Examples include the use of performance computer chips; non-OEM approved exhaust, fuel or air induction systems; and the use of fuels other than those recommended for normal operation by the manufacturer.

(2) Mechanically sound engines are in good working condition and do not, for example, leak or consume excessive amounts of oil, are not worn out, do not overheat, do not leak antifreeze and have properly working emissions control systems. AMSOIL recommends repairing malfunctioning engines prior to the installation of AMSOIL synthetic oils.

(3) Personal vehicles frequently traveling greater than 10 miles (16 km) at a time and not operating under severe service.

(4) Turbo/supercharged engines, commercial or fleet vehicles, excessive idling, vehicles with more than 100,000 miles without prior continuous use of AMSOIL motor oil, daily short-trip driving less than 10 miles (16 km), frequent towing, plowing, hauling or dusty condition driving.

Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation. Most commonly, the salespeople are expected to sell products directly to consumers by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing. “Network Marketing” and “Multi-level Marketing” are generally considered to be synonyms, and a subset of direct selling.While “direct selling” and “network marketing” refer primarily to the distribution system, the term “multi-level marketing” emphasizes the compensation plan more.  Other terms that are sometimes used to describe multi-level marketing include “word-of-mouth marketing”, “interactive distribution”, and “relationship marketing”. Gear lubrication has been commonly considered elementary, but, in fact, it is a dynamic process that requires sophisticated technology.  The differentials that house the gears are out of sight, out of mind. They are neglected. But differentials are just as important to the operation of a vehicle as the engine. An engine without a functioning differential will not move the vehicle.  Gear lubrication needs to be taken more seriously than before.  First, is improved fuel economy. Modern vehicle aerodynamics, with lower level air dams, is decreasing the air flow over differentials. Fuel economy is improved, but reduced air flow increases differential operating temperatures. Also, lubricant fill volumes in differentials have been reduced in order to lower fluid drag on the gears and bearings for further improvement in fuel economy. However, lubricants cool components, and with less fluid in the sump, operating temperatures rise. Improvements in vehicle performance have created additional need for more sophisticated gear lubrication. Model-year 2007 turbo diesel pickup trucks, V-10 gasoline pickups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and high-horsepower V-8 trucks have more towing and payload capacities than in previous years, yet their differentials have not changed. There has been a 34% increase in engine horsepower over the last decade, while axle gear sizes have remained constant, sump capacities have been lowered and drain intervals extended. In the light truck segment there has been a 93% horsepower increase since 1981.1 In vehicles such as a fifth-wheel equipped Ford F-350 Super Duty, towing capacities have reached a high of 19,200 lbs.2 And testing shows that in new axle applications simulating trailer towing at 88 km/h (55 mph) at a 3.5% grade temperatures can reach as high as 188°C (370°F).3 Stress on differentials has also increased in limousines, conversion vans, and trucks and cars with modified, high-performance engines. More power, more towing capacity and higher hauling limits greatly increase the stress that causes heat and wear.  Improvements in vehicle comfort have also driven the need for better gear lubrication. The demand for greater interior space has forced vehicle manufacturers to lower floor boards, which restricts air flow to the differential. Hot exhaust systems are forced closer to the axle housing, and differential operating temperatures are increased even further. Most vehicles operate under severe service as defined by vehicle manufacturers, but the majority of vehicle owners are unaware of this. Severe service applications include towing, hauling, plowing, off-road use, frequent stop-and-go driving, steep-hill driving and temperature extremes. Severe service applications are on the rise. For example, more than 90 percent of Ford Super Duty pickups are used for towing.4 Severe service increases the need for better gear lubrication. Synthetic gear lubes are recognized as superior to petroleum-based gear lubes by vehicle manufacturers, gear manufacturers and most high-performance automotive experts. Synthetic gear lubes exhibit all-around better performance. There are many synthetic gear lubricants available to consumers, including those marketed by vehicle manufacturers. All position themselves as superior to the rest.


Operating Conditions and Lubrication Requirements Differentials contain many different components, each having its own requirements for lubrication. The ring and pinion gears operate under extreme pressure and sliding contact that require extreme-pressure additives for protection. The bearings operate under rolling motion where lubricant film strength is particularly important, and limited-slip clutches require special friction additives for proper operation. It is essential, therefore, that gear lube formulations be carefully balanced to protect
all components. Too much emphasis on the needs of one component can detract from the needs of another.

Gear oils should be changed more frequently when operating vehicles or equipment in dusty or dirty conditions unless the gear system is properly sealed and equipped with membrane type breathers.

Note: AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where water contamination occurs. Check and service the gear oil frequently when water contamination is possible.

Recommended for use in differentials, manual transmissions and other gear applications requiring any of the following specifications: API GL-5, MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037), Mack GO-J, or the differential (hypoid) gear oil specifications from all domestic and foreign manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Can also be used in axles where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended.

AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® (75W-90) provides superior performance and replaces competitors’ 75W-90 and 80W-90 gear oils. It delivers the best fuel efficiency and cold temperature performance of the Sever Gear oils.

AMSOIL Severe Gear is compatible with conventional and synthetic gear oils. Mixing AMSOIL gear oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed.

Aftermarket oil additives, other than those specified by AMSOIL, are not recommended for use with AMSOIL gear oil.

AMSOIL Severe Gear is compatible with most limited-slip differentials. If limited-slip differential chatter occurs, add AMSOIL Slip-Lock™ friction modifier additive.

Rugged’ 1968 Barracuda Logs Nearly 500,000 Miles With AMSOIL

Dealer Phil Garner of Hopewell Junction, New York still drives the Plymouth Barracuda he purchased new in 1968.

More remarkable, the car runs on the original engine. In August 2010 the odometer read 438,000 miles.

Garner said the reason the engine has lasted nearly a half-million miles without requiring any major work other than a valve job is because he has been using AMSOIL synthetic oil since the mid-1970s. “I understood AMSOIL was one of the best products out there,” Garner said. “It seems to be true because the inside of the old 318 (cubic inch, V-8) still looks clean, with no varnish or sludge anywhere.”

Garner said the car’s quality construction coupled with consistent maintenance have kept the car running smoothly.

“Not much has gone wrong with the car; it just keeps on running. I just keep after things,” he said. “I change the coolant ever year, and every 100,000 miles, I automatically rebuild the carburetor and have a local electric-motor repair shop replace the brushes in the alternator; at the same miles, I replace both the water and fuel pumps to prevent breakdowns. At about 350,000 miles, I replaced the timing chain and performed a valve job. The brake rotors have been in the car for 42 years now, but the rear drums have been changed once and the lower ball joints have been replaced once, too, although I did have to change the clutch three times.”

Tough Miles for Family Car

The car has not been coddled in its long life. Phil and his wife, Ellen, love to see the country’s beauty and started traveling in the convertible in their 20s. They’ve driven it through 49 states and every Canadian province.

The Garners like the outdoors, so along with their children they hauled a camper and boat, sometimes as much as 3,500 pounds. “I have always loved to drive the Barracuda,” Garner said. “It’s not new, and today it could use some front-end work, but the car still passes state inspection every year. The shifting is a little sloppy compared to modern cars, but it’s OK. It still handles well, and is great in the turns. I feel safe in the Barracuda; it’s a rugged car.”

Preventing rust has been the greatest challenge to preserving the car’s originality, according to Garner. He uses AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector (AMH). “It’s like a wax; it never really hardens and is great for undercoating,” he said. “I go over the car every year looking for spots that need a touch-up; special attention is given to the brake lines.”

It was treated with a rust-proofer in the 1970s, he said.

“Nowadays, I always try to keep it clean, waxed and greased, and I never drive it too hard.”

“What I like most about the car is its history of being our family car,” Garner said. “The kids were raised with the Barracuda. I love how well it runs with so many miles. Never any problems at all. We’ve taken many long trips in it, yet the Barracuda has never failed us. Never. The miles just go on and on. If a car is solid to begin with, proper care will make it last a very long time.”
