To Love Somebody by Bee Gees (Cover)

In my head, this song would sound much better on piano. The problem is, I can’t play piano like I hear it in my head.

This is a cover of the classic Bee Gee’s song, “To Love Somebody”. It much slower than the original track, and probably has a few less harmony parts than it could have had.

I took a different approach to recording this one. My first attempt on piano was recorded to a click track like almost all my videos over the last few years. I also normally record each track separately, then mix and record the video afterward.

For this video, I decided to record audio and video simultaneously. Plus, I decided to use my iPhone to record the video instead of my usual Nikon DSLR. I think the iPhone did a much better job.

Look Up by Joy Oladokun

My Apple Music year end statistics came back recently and apparently Joy Oladokun is my number one listened to artist. That was not surprising really.

I was very happy to see Joy in concert a couple of months back in Chapel Hill, NC – at Cat’s Cradle. That was an amazing night. She is a top-class human in every way.

Here’s a cover of “Look Up” that I had a lot of fun making.

I remember liking this song when it came out, it was a huge hit for Phillip Phillips at the time. I’d forgotten about it until just before Christmas when I was asked if I’d like to record it for our Church’s Christmas service.

Xander’s First Trail Run

This was such a special run. Xander (6) had been asking for me to take him on a trail run for a while. I didn’t think he would manage very far, but I shouldn’t have been surprised since he is so full of energy. He ran for 2 miles and loved it so much, we did it all over again the next day.

Raglan Road

Raglan Road is a well-known Irish song. It was originally a poem by Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh (first published around 1946). It was put to music by Luke Kelly in the early 1970s. Kelly used the tune from an old Irish traditional song called “The Dawning of the Day”, or Fáinne Geal an Lae as it was originally published (by Edward Walsh in 1847).

There’s many versions of this song out there to pick from for inspiration. While I don’t really like how Van Morrison seemed to detour quite a bit from the original, I couldn’t help listening to it.

However, I stuck closer to the original, but a lot faster than Kelly’s version.

You will see from the video here I had a little help on the whistle for this version. Xander knew I was struggling and offered to help out.

Even though I’m legit Irish, I still seem to make an effort to look extra Irish in my Irish music videos. Haha.

I’ll Tell My Ma

I wasn’t really planning to record this one, but Xander took a liking to it and had been singing it for weeks. I wasn’t sure how the recording process would work with a 5 year old, but I think he did a superb job, even though he told me it was a bit fast for him.

This is a old song that I had believed was of Irish origins, but based on Wikipedia it seems it may have started in England, and then was adopted (and adapted) by the neighboring countries.
