Upper 2 Chemistry Inventors

Today Upper 2 pupils at Albyn showed off their inventive sides by making their own chemical indicators in their chemistry lesson to test the pH of various substances. They used beetroot and cabbage as well as a variety of other substances.

Lower School Pupils Triumph in Rotary Quiz

Last night the Lower School Quiz Team won the first round of the Rotary Quiz beating Robert Gordon’s College, St Margaret’s, Ashley Road, Skene Square and St Josephs. This puts the Albyn team into the area round to be held in a few weeks time. Our winning team consisted of: Oliver Baillie, Ewan Hendry, Olivia Juett, Inga Lawson and Alia Bedawi as reserve.

Europe Direct Debating Competition

Sophie Glenn and Victoria Leng (U6) spoke at Gordonstoun last Tuesday in the Law Society Competition. They were placed second in their heat and got very positive feedback. It was a similar story for Sam Johnson and Fintan McKenna (U3) in the second round of the ESU Juniors on Wednesday. They spoke extremely well and were placed second in their heat.

Sam Johnson and Fintan Mckenna will be taking part in the Europe Direct debating competition to be held in the Beach Ballroom on February 23rd. This is a competition run by Aberdeenshire council where the boys will speak on two separate motions linked to the European Union and issues facing young people today.

A programme was arranged by the Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. Sophie Glenn and Fiona Roberts spoke about their visit to Auscwhitz to their peers in Upper 5 and 6. Mrs Debbie Taylor, a representative from the Jewish Community in Aberdeen reminded us of the fact that Nazism and Fascism is not dead and we need to use our voices to “speak up and out,” to make sure it never happens again. Pupils heard the message from the Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sachs for this year.
After this Mrs Findlay spoke of her visit to the Killing Fields in Cambodia and told the story and shared the message of a Cambodian lady, Kim San, who lost members of her family during the time of Pol Pot.

At the end of the proceedings the girls were challenged to write a message of their own: “To wipe out prejudice is to change human nature. Until that happens we can hope but can’t hope without fear”. “I’m sorry about everything that happened. I feel sickened that nothing was done about it immediately and in some ways I feel responsible because I have done nothing to stop it.”

After this solemn hour a Bagel Breakfast was held in aid of World Jewish Relief, one of the charities which ran the Kindertransport during the war. The Higher Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies class had been studying Judaism. Katy Malone, Hannah Clark and Rebekah Sutherland decided to raise money for a Jewish Charity and this was the result. They helped prepare the bagels, which were kindly donated by Sodexo, with the kitchen staff. £100 was raised for this cause by their idea and effort.

Albyn to Stage Macbeth!

Auditions for the Albyn School production of “Macbeth” will take place during the week of the 27 February. Stage fighting, blood and
gore and, of course, all the drama of one of Shakespeare‟s best known tragedies – all pupils who are interested should come along and be part of the action.

Albyn Pupils Make Donation to CHAS

Albyn’s Lower school pupils have raised over £1000 for CHAS, Children’s Hospice Association Scotland from a successful book and stationary sale held last term.

CHAS is the only charity in Scotland that provides vital hospice services for children and young people with life-shortening conditions. They offer care for the whole family in two children’s hospices, Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch and also run a homecare service called CHAS at Home helping families in their own homes across Scotland when they need it most.

Albyn Scientists Visit St Andrews University

Rebecca Hobart and Jade Whitelaw (Upper 5), 2 of the top performing pupils studying higher Chemistry at Albyn School took part in a SCIS Chemistry masterclass last week. The event was held at St Andrews University and Rebecca and Jade completed a day of practical work making paracetamol and a multi-drug synthesis.

At Albyn our pupils are always busy either with academic work, extra-curricular activities or with charity work. Here are a few of the upcoming events and recent news;

On the 2 February there will be an Upper 5/6 Holocaust Memorial event in the Atrium at 1025am and a Big Bagel Breakfast in aid of World Jewish Relief (organised by Higher RMPS class). Any unwanted Christmas presents for raffle prizes can be handed in to Katy Malone, Hannah Clark, Rebekah Sutherland or Mrs Findlay.

Lower 5a are growing daffodils in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care on the 22 of February.

Olivia Douglas Lower 3a, has decided to make and sell jewellery in aid of Befriend a Child charity. She has already had a sale at her church and made around £70. Olivia took the idea to Mrs Thomson and now she and three other girls in the class are planning a sale in school on 14th and 21st of March.

Clan Gordon today presented a cheque to Cancer Research UK after having raised over £780 from their recent successful fundraising events.

In the Scottish Swimming Championships held on Saturday 28 January Eilidh Duthie, won the 200m scottish schools back stroke and along with her sisters Niamh and Alisa also won first team at the schools biathlon on Sunday 29 January- well done!

At the weekend we also had a group of boys participating in the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships. Nicholas Read, U4 was part of a team who won the gold medal in the Under 19 boys category. Nicholas also put in a very impressive performance to win the silver medal in the individual Under 17 boys category and only narrowly missed out on the gold medal.

Leo McKeever and Ollie Kinghorn, U3, were part of the siver medal winning team in the Under 15 team event. Well done to all involved.
