It was thanks to a chance encounter while Daniel Bachman (a.k.a. Sacred Harp) was on tour through the Midwest that their collaborative effort, Of Deathly Premonitions, came to be. Walker was excited to meet this fellow fingerstyle guitar traveller of comparable age and equal ability – the first thing they talked about was a shared love for Loren Connors and Sandy Bull. Not long after, they were talking record collections and collaborations. Of Deathly Premonitions is the result, four songs birthed from a relaxed session in the middle of the week during a trip Walker made to Bachman’s hometown of Fredericksberg, Virginia this past spring. With a few beers and a bit of ambition, the pastoral past meets the fingerstyle future. 100 copies.

No puedo más que confirmar las sensaciones del año pasado. The instruments remain somewhat steady as instant found percussions and hand claps, acoustic guitar strums and pickings, banjos, flute and glockenspiel, here and there a cello texture. This is a staring at a nice forest and environment at a doorstep, a celebration to a time standing still place. Themes like songs are only repetitions of just one sentence. The sound of their improvisations are really nice, which is psych-folk/acid folk minded, performed by new hippies with a forest mind, but it is getting a bit long and limited for a full release doing only that outro, intro, intermezzo, and lullaby jam stuff. psychedelic folk

buy / download

john terlazzo (rare earth XXVI)

john terlazzo - honour among thieves (1983)

"Dark loner poet folk/rock. Family Elan are alone in their field. Here, Chris Hladowski has put together a collection of original numbers, visions created from lost/found tapes and traditional pieces (including a absolutely gorgeous “The BlackPlanets Of Her Eyes”) that are a fitting companion to Family Elan’s “Stare of Dawn” debut.

Alongside Hladowski’s voice, there’s the vocal input of Nalle’s Hanna Tuulikki – a voice as easily capable of gentle Qawwali as it is folk song. This is a record of heavy treble intricacy, Hladowski’s saz and bouzouki playing encompassing drones, folk, dervish progressive work and a woozy shimmer over and through the entwining melodies. Family Elan are more than just a project or a band, Hladowski has endowed the music here with a such a unique voice that shaky shorthand comparisons would be pointless and a short sell. Clawfoot Slumber’s Silly Little Dream occupies this space, weaving together a series of tracks that navigates the intricacies, vagaries, and mysteries of a dreamscape that is at times solemn, joyous, and terrifying. alex callenberger, the creative force behind Clawfoot Slumber, has striven to create music that is not merely aural, but visual as well…in his own words, he has begun to “sculpt” his work, focusing “on the interpretation of sounds as images and feelings within the sonic realm.” His music has become a canvas, his art an instrument…colors, abstractions, and images ride upon the sounds of each track of Silly Little Dream, melding together reality and fancy in a wave of resonance and reverb. the needle & the groove

free download

adam bleckley

adam bleckley - reverse (self-released, 2011)

I'm an musician from Birmingham in the U.K. I create hypnotic music using different sources of sound. I can only say with this first near 55 minute recording they have surely delivered a professional nicely arranged psych-folk product with tracks that flow into one another through meandering improvisations and songs that take its place. Instruments used are glockenspiel, flute, acoustic guitar, slide-guitar, reverb guitar, wah-wah guitar effects, some violin and sitar and harmonium, parts with analogue synths arrangements, lots of zither, environmental collages with sea shores, water and making ramblings, a small part with tube flutings, some breathing and with some songs appearing more often, arranged with a beautiful acid-folk female voice or male voice and some spoken word referring to fairy tale/literature story telling. I hear a beautiful version of Gwydion(?) 's “Flowers Made Of Winter” and of “a leaf must fall”. Highly recommended. Please release this on LP/CD! Lots of friends helped the duo out with arrangements in a rather improvised colouring matter, adding different flavours as changing aspects of sound, by instruments like slide guitar varying the acoustic sound or instruments like glockenspiel (5), organ (7) or bit of accordion. The tracks hold the middle between melancholy, meditation and a descriptive filmic way of performance as if this recalls some sort of road movie mixed with that classical music stage of mood. An album which works like a never ending story and therefore automatically get you listening to it again and again. psychedelic folk

buy They create electroacoustic songs on many instruments such as violin, cello, voice, bass, gezhong, piano, and accordian. When those instruments aren't enough, they invite friends to play with them and write scores for conducted improvisations. Their scores are often conceptually or process-driven, resulting in their unique style of electroacoustic music, reminiscent of Scandinavian free folk, lullabies, dramatic film scores, and electronic improvised music. 500 copies.

"The Amber Sea" is their debut album and is the story of amber, inspired by the mythology, Baltic folklore, and geology of this magical gem. The album traces the story of how amber is created, with material from intimate lullabies and free form ballads to epic orchestral oceans. digitals

download / buy

victor herrero

victor herrero - anacoreta (bo'weavil, 2009)

Mixing folk music, flamenco and classical styles Herrero represents an inspired new voice on the solo acoustic guitar scene, and it's fitting that Bo Weavil - a label that's no stranger to the movement - should be behind the release. Once the name for Kyogle-based duo Michael and Kristina Donnelly, it’s now a fluid collective with Michael as its central component. This is their first release on Donnelly’s new non-CD-R label Pacific Soma. If Donnelly’s documented mode of operation still stands, then Grass Openings is a collection of clippings from long-form improvisations that channel the peculiar space in which the group improvise: normally a small village near Kyogle, NSW, called Green Pigeon. That, at least, is what this sounds like, because despite their long hiatus (nearly 12 months is a long time for the Donnellys) not much in the world of Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood has changed. Pacific Soma

After numerous CDs, CDRs, cassettes and LPs, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood have established themselves as one of the many lights in modern improvised outsider music. Her new album Graphic as a Star is based upon the poems of the 19th century American poet Emily Dickenson. Josephine lays stairsteppy melodies beneath a collection of Dickenson gems and sings them with a burnished soulfullness like the purple sunsets so often described in the poems. Massachusetts mountains pearled spiderwebs and folk heroe William Tell are all present in this unforgetable meeting of Dickensons posey and Fosters music making a natural and inevitable whole.

This LP is a limited edition of 500 copies and comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. "If current instrumental music was always as majestic and compelling as this, Id hang up my retro-Italian soundtrack collectors boots for good. From the explosive drums rolls on the opening track, the only cover on the record, "LAppel du Vere," from Roman Polanskis The Tenant (music by Philippe Sarde), to the darkly exotic finale, "A Housewifes Dram," this album is a superbly crafted mosaic of whip-cracking vengeance, speak-easy hallucinations and haunted geography. Besides the Italian-Western overtones, the carnival-esque freakshow backdrops, Korshid-Egyptian guitar passages, and flipped-out electronic space-psych, are perhaps the best surf-inspired tracks Ive heard in years. Its spine-chilling how producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Eyvind Kang, Sun City Girls, Secret Chiefs 3, Six Organs Of Admittance, Wayne Horvitz, Matt Chamberlain, Grails, Wolves In The Throne Room, etc.) managed to make this record the ultimate mid-60s surf-vampire-Western revival soundtrack. Elements of Joe Meeks best Moontrekkers productions cross with a dash of Badalamenti murder blues-drama, setting the stage for Steve Schmitts cobra-twilight guitar work and the outlaw drums of Dave Abramson to leave their indelible stains across this 41-minute epic journey." - Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls).

download

helena espvall & masaki batoh

helena espvall & masaki batoh - overloaded ark (drag city, 2009)

A sequel to last year's eponymous debut as a duo, this new Drag City LP from Espers cellist Helena Espvall and Ghost's Masaki Batoh delves even deeper into traditional and ancient musics, making use of an armoury of instruments that extends beyond 'mildly obscure' (renaissance harp, sho, hurdy gurdy, etc) and enters into the realm of 'are you sure you haven't just made that up?' (auschpfeife, crumhorn, cornamuse, rig and darbuka). On hand to assist in this piece of instrumental archeology is ancient music specialist Haruo Kondo as well as two of Batoh's Ghost bandmates (namely Junzo Tateiwa and Kazuo Ogino). Overloaded Ark reinterprets songs dug up from a variety of different cultures, from Scandinavian folk to French and Italian medieval court dances - with a spot of German madrigal thrown in as a crowd-pleaser. In addition to the album's appropriation of Cuban protest songs and Latin hymns, you do actually get to hear some original compositions by the duo themselves: beautiful, elongated pieces like 'Until Tomorrow' and 'Over The Luminescence Land' find the pair on terrific form, with the former in particular capturing the unearthly prog-folk magic (possibly with a 'k' at the end) these two can summon up. Recommended.

aldea f.: in stormy nights, helena espvall & masaki batoh
download

united bible studies

united bible studies - the jonah (camera obscura, 2009)

The album title is a reference to the James Herbert novel where a "Jonah" is a cursed person who brings bad luck everywhere, and is also the title of the 16 minute avant/progressive folk suite that forms the record's centerpiece. Richard Youngs' progressive rock project Ilk provided the impetus for the band to make a "Prog Album" (which was the working title) so they started with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink opus "The Jonah". It was the first track recorded for this album during a two week burst of industry and creativity when the band locked themselves away in Mullingar. David's imagery for the first section was partially inspired by the Vin Diesel film Pitch Black and it takes flight in all kinds of different dream directions from there. Running the gamut from delicate acoustic guitar to Sunn 0))) style doom metal and back again, it's an extraordinary feat of the imagination.

With a sound like expiring infant suns weeping for worlds they'll never warm, "The Jonah" should appeal to lovers of the likes of Espers, Black Forest/Black Sea, Sharron Kraus, and Nick Castro, as well as darker matter like Current 93 and Sol Invictus.

microphones in the trees: the shore that fears the sea
