Kentridge uses only one sheet of paper to draw on to create his animation. He simply draws, takes a picture, erases, draws some more, takes another picture, and so on.

Kentridge was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1955. Much of his artwork has to do with politics or suffering. He is by far the best known South African artist, with much popular demand for his work. In 1976, he earned a B.A. in politics and African studies from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Today he still works from Johannesburg creating more animations which are now more personal and almost autobiographical. He created two characters, Soho Eckstein and Felix Teitlebaum, to better portray the political and social struggle of many South Africans of the time.

I chose William Kentridge because I am using a process very similar to his. For my independent project, I am using photoshop to create an animation, all using one piece of paper. Only, I am using a computer screen, not paper. But I am also drawing, saving, erasing, and drawing some more to create my animation. It is a very tidius yet relaxing process and I am enjoying it so far.

Pics from Assignment 8

<img style="display:block; I originally chose to do the time loop experiment by having many different people ask a mall personell for directions to the same store every five minutes; However, it was a lot harder than I thought to get people to do it, and time was running out. So I changed my plan to: just me, asking the same person for different store locations every five minutes. So I found the guy in his red coat, standing in the same position, and started asking questions.
1: I asked him where Hot Topic was. He had no unordinary reaction, gave me thurough directions, and was helpful.

2:(another security person had joined him) I asked him where Libby Lu was. He recognized me, gave thurough directions again, and asked " Anything else I can help you with?"

3: I asked him where Best Buy was. He grinned when he saw me approach, gave directions again, also saying "Its right where you just were" and then said again: "Anything ELSE I can help you with?" again I replied no and as I left, he explained to the woman: " He asked me where Best Buy was, Hot Topic, and Libby Lu!"

As I was making my way around to ask him another question, he and the other woman walked away. So I decided to follow some people.

I followed an odd couple. Well, the guy was odd. He was wearing a womans shirt from H&M.
First, they went to Macy's. When they were in there, they stopped to look at:
Girls clothes(ages 2-6)
Boys clothes (ages 2-6)
and on the way out they looked at some wierd jackets.

They then went to the parking lot, got in thier red car and left.

So I then decided to look for the guy I was harrasing earlier, to ask him some more questions because I wasnt satisfied yet.
So I headed to the food court and there he was. So I asked him another question.

4: I asked him where Starbucks was. I'm not sure if he recognised me, he gave me a very blunt and quick answer. He did not seem amused anymore.
So before I could ask him again, he walked away. So I followed him and he ended up leaving in an employee exit.

So one more thing that I did was find a random person talking on their phone and pretend to talk on my phone right next to them. I would then repeat and paraphrase everything they were saying.
I did it to two people and neither of them noticed. One was talking about a movie and how they were getting home. The other was talking to her boyfriend, so that was amusing.

Overall, I think I got some good reactions, and learned some things about random people. good times.

Assignment 7 Podcast

Click to Play

So heres a podcast about "The Morning After"

I decided to give some tips on hangover remedies.

enjoy. or dont.

Brainstorming and such

So about this Independent project.
I've gotta say, im kinda excited to get started, i just wish i didnt have so much other work to get in the way of this. Anyway, i am planning on, as you probably already know, making an animation for this assignment. I will be using photoshop CS2, since i am already comfortable with it, and can do a lot more than flash. that and i dont have flash.
So. My idea right now is the progression of war/weapons over time. Im pretty sure this is what i want to do. dont ask me how i came up with this idea, because i have no clue. maybe it was when i was listening to "Imagine"(the APC version). which is kind of why I want to use that as the background music. either that or "right in two" by Tool, because that one also is relative to the subject. . allthough, im not sure people would really hear the lyrics, so it wouldnt really matter.
Anyway, ive thought about it a lot and have some good images about it. i think this could work out well and flow nicely. ive really been thinking a lot about what i can portray and how i can portray it.
I am not sure if i will use a blank white background or have some color an stuff. I think transitions and space are easier with white, but color could make it look more complete.

so i want to start very early and end now. im going to start off, i think, with some monkeys. [weapons- stick, bones]
I'd then move up the evolution ladder toooo cavemen- I'd like to try and keep it to war on man, so im not sure if cavemen should be there. um.. [weapons- club, spear]
then i'll go to medieval times, like knights an stuff [weapons- arrowss, swords catapults]
next id like to skip ahead to possibly cowboys and indians- they are a vital part, i might have a couple frames of the boats coming ashore with native americans looking on. yknow, basically pocahontas. [weapons- bow+arrow, tomahawk, rifle]
Then id move to the civil war. [weapons- rifles{bayonettes}, cannons]
Im not so accurate on history, but i think i'll put samurai in about here. [swords]
um, then possibly go to WWI. show some trench warfare and lots of exploding goodness. lots of new weapons here [machine gun, grenades, planes{dogfights}, - uh im probably gonna mix WWI and WWII -- and vietnam-- so also in weapons will be flamethrower, submachine gun, arial bombs, rocketlauncher, tanks, 88mm guns, snipers, land mines, helicopters, napalm, nuclear bomb]
um, yeah, then i'd move to some terrorism, not nessesarilly the twin towers, but random explosions in civil areas or something..idk.
but then go to the war in iraq [a bit more advanced weapons and roadside bombs]
Then, i would start reusing scenes and mixing them up really fast then ending finnally with the atom bomb again. this time a lot longer than when i used it before.

now with all of this crap im putting in here, im not sure how long it will be. i might end up using the song Imagine as the time frame or i may have to cut it short, because animation takes a while, and the song is. . 4:47 long. so that could take a bit. But i think it would be fun to do so i dont mind.
So the entire thing will start off slow, and steadily increase in tempo and pace of frames until the end where it gets really fast then stops on one image- the mushroom cloud.

so yeah. i'll stop now. i have some images i need to be scanned. i'll get those up before class. not really a storyboard, i just basically wrote a storyboard. these are going to be images ill be using for characters an stuff in the animation.

Assignment 6

<a href="http://blip.tv/file/get/AlecAce-Assignment6104.mov" onclick="play_blip_movie_178536(); For those 12 hours, I only had one time incriment where there was nothing playing in my head. There were a few song repeats and a lot of random things, so overall the list was quite diverse. I noticed that I had the most from The Beatles and Tool, and a couple songs from video games.
So, every half hour I wrote down the song title, artist(if known), and reason(if known) why it was in my head.
For the presentation, I chose to make a single audio file of every song on my list, each playing chronologically for 5 seconds.
I havent finished as of right now. I think I am going to make a powerpoint slide show to go with the audio that has the title, artist and reason.
yeah. sounds good.

thats all.
peace. out.

another mac video

So theres another "frustrated Mac user" video that describes the mac perfectly.
watch:

owned

First Post

This mac that I am currently working on is a piece of garbage.
