Os machos chegam a pesar 16 kg, as fêmeas são um pouco mais pequenas, sendo a diferença visível quando estão perto dos machos. A plumagem é castanha e o pescoço esbranquiçado. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Devido ao seu comportamento muito arisco, as abetardas raramente se deixam ver a pequena distância, pelo que estes aspectos nem sempre são fáceis de observar.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Pouco comum e com uma distribuição muito localizada, a abetarda muito difícil de encontrar fora dos seus locais habituais de ocorrência. A espécie conta hoje em Portugal com uma população de cerca de 1000 indivíduos (metade dos quais se encontram nas planícies de Castro Verde). Frequenta sobretudo grandes extensões abertas e dificilmente tolera aproximações de pessoas a menos de um quilómetro. Embora a espécie seja sobretudo residente, é habitual haver alguma dispersão de indivíduos nos meses de Verão, havendo então observações esporádicas de abetardas noutras regiões do país. A envergadura pode atingir os 3 metros. A silhueta em voo é um pouco diferente da do grifo, sendo as asas mantidas ligeiramente recurvadas para baixo. Quando visto em voo, podem por vezes ver-se as patas esbranquiçadas. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Este grande abutre é relativamente raro em Portugal, mas pode ser considerado de ocorrência regular ao&nbsp; longo da fronteira, especialmente na Beira e no Alentejo.
