ITEC2012 Linz

Ho ricevuto la prima bozza di calendario per l'International Tuba Euphonium Conference che si terrà dal 22 al 30 giugno prossimo presso la prestigiosa Brucknerhaus di Linz in Austria, il calendario è pieno di eventi che neanche immaginate: concerti di solisti, gruppi di ottoni tra cui i favolosi Mnozil Brass, brass band, master class di ogni genere, la possibilità di incontrare molti tra i più importanti esponenti a livello mondiale dei nostri amati strumenti e compagni di viaggio, e tanto divertimento;

non perdete l'occasione di partecipare ad un evento di simile portata una volta che lo organizzano in europa, ed in più così vicino all'italia.
Steven Mead sta facendo un lavoro strepitoso insieme ai suoi collaboratori di Linz.
E' una grossa opportunità per tutti, ma soprattutto per i più giovani e per quelli che vogliono fare grandi cose nella loro vita musicale.

The Value of Teachers

Today surfing on FaceBook I found a very interesting article on the value of Teachers, maybe this is very common in the States where anyone can aspire to earn more money if do his/her job better then others;

but I think for many italians could be upsetting: in the pubblic schools everything is flattened, everybody get the same money, the wage increase depends only on years of service, and the quality of the teachers is not recognised; furthermore we are leaving in a period where there is an abuse of fixed-term employment, without the security to be confirmed the following year, independently if one did a good job or not.

It is absolutely frustrating.

But everytime our politicians talks about meritocracy I shudder, because when they try to do some change, the results are even worste then what we have.

bureaucra"z"y reigns supreme.

I'd like that my work was recognized more from my country.

Oggi navigando su facebook ho trovato un articolo molto interessante sul "Valore degli Insegnanti", magari quello di cui parla l'articolo può essere una cosa molto comune in un paese come gli Stati Uniti dove tutti possono aspirare a guadagnare di più o ad avere dei riconoscimenti se fanno bene il proprio lavoro o se lo fanno meglio degli altri;

questa teoria invece per molti italiani potrebbe essere sconvolgente (specialmente per i diretti interessati): nella scuola pubblica tutto è appiattito, ognuno guadagna gli stessi soldi, lo stipendio aumenta solo per scatti di anzianità (Chi ce li ha tra l'altro, visto che i precari della scuola non hanno questo privilegio) e la qualità degli insegnanti non è riconosciuta in alcun modo; inoltre stiamo vivendo in un periodo dove si abusa del precariato, rispetto alla gestione di stampo comunista del pubblico impiego italiano, c'è stata addirittura una regressione; molti non sanno se l'anno prossimo lavoreranno o se lavoreranno nella stessa scuola, indipendentemente se abbiamo fatto un buon lavoro o meno, e la continuità didattica?

E' assolutamente frustrante.

Ogni volta che i "nostri" politici parlano di meritocrazia rabbrividisco perchè riescono solo a far danni, non sapendo loro in molti casi cosa significhi quella parola.

La burocrazia regna sovrana e ogni anno sono costretto a produrre quintali di carta straccia.

Mi piacerebbe molto che il mio lavoro fosse riconosciuto come si deve dal mio Paese.

The revenge of the Bflat - La rivincita della Tuba in Sib

In the last 60 years, or more, the Bflat tuba has been supplanted in most of the professional orchestras in the world by the C tuba, with the exception of the german speaking countries where it has never konwn a crisis, do to thier strong musical tradition.

In Italy too the Bflat tuba was predominant, too much I would say, because was used also for all the opera repertoire, but most of that operas were written for F instruments…..with the results you all can imagine, the istrument used in that case was a Bflat Contrabass Trombone, Bflat Cimbasso or whatever you want to call it.

Most of the european tuba players that moved to the States during the first half of the 20th century,like Fritz Geib and August Helleberg, used a Bflat.

With the “new” generations the C tuba became the standard contrabass tuba; Arnold Jacobs launched the trend of the 6/4 “York” style (that is still the most copied design on the “big C tuba“ world) creating a new tradition, that is still the must for most of the modern orchestral tuba player.

This trend has gained worldwide so you can find a “York” style C tuba in New York, Chicago, as well as Amsterdam, Tokyo or Sidney.

Seems that the particular sound of that kind of tuba has infected everyone.

I also ,afer playing Bflat tuba for few years (winning my first audition in San Carlo Theater Orchestra on a Miraphone Bflat), moved to a C tuba as my only contrabass instrument (PT-6P), with which I played for many years; honestly I have to say that my first impression was everything on the C tuba was much easier to play compared with a Bflat, the articulation was clearer and not a small thing: the missing notes were much less.

Only when I started to audition in Germany I decided to come back to the Bflat and the first impact was terribile, I coudln’t play a really legato, and the high register was full of mistakes…with time the results start to improve, and now that I use a Fafner, I fixed my level on how good I can play it, in all the features: sound, intonation, articulation, legato, flexibility.

For a while my use of the Bflat was almost only in preparations for auditions; but then something changed, maybe the technical improvements with it has played a key role, my taste has changed and I decided to use more the BBflat.

My idea of orchestral sound has develop, and from “two colors” (F tuba and C tuba) has become “three colors” (F tuba, C tuba and Bflat), and with it also the use of the different instruments through the repertoire has changed.

I found much more possibilites in my color palette; and this choice, that maybe none of the orchestral colleagues will notice at first sight, will change the sound of orchestra in each particular work.

I have to say also the manufacturers spent during the years more time and money developing C tubas then Bflat, there are plenty of different professional models in C then in Bflat.

Today also if the designs of the Bflat are not so far from the traditional design ( German Style Kaiser Tuba) the performance qualities are much better then before, the playability, the response, the intonation, and the resonance are first class.

So what change? Why a tuba player should play both C and Bflat?

Good question!!

It’s very difficult to describe the difference between a C “York” Style (or american style C tuba) and a Bflat “Kaiser” Tuba, I red many descriptions about that and still it’s not easy to have a clear idea, here you can find a satisfying report:

The Kaiser tuba to me has a very dark and deep sound, with a lot of core, everytime I play it I feel the weight of its sound, the York style has a more broad sound,with less core but with which is very easy to melt with the rest of the orchestra….yes I know, it’s a too much superficial descritpion, as I once red: “talk about music is like dance about architecture”.

You should experiment by yourself, not only playing both but also listening the different orchestras in the world (with internet today we have all the tools to do it) and making a comparison in sound, it worth it.

In the last years I saw that some of the tuba players in the biggest american orchestras have shown interest on the Bflat, that’s a very big change considering that in the last sixty years C tuba in the States has been the all around orchestral instrument; the first I knew is Gene Pokorny (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), for which the Melton/Meinl Weston has developed the piston version of the Fafner; Carol Jantsch (Philadelphia Orchestra) shown an interest on the Fafner; Matt Good (Dallas Symphony) own his Fafner, and more and more in other countries are moving to this new trend. Brian Earl principal tuba in La Scala Orchestra told me both times he played the Ring, the conductors Muti first and Bareboim nowadays asked him to play a Bflat tuba, the original instrument for which Wagner wrote the contrabasstuba part.

Mainly two reasons have led to this process:

- the open-minded of some pioneering musician, ready for the challenge that adding a different instrument to their arsenal requires.

- meticulousness and knowledge of some conductors in demanding different instruments, compared to others who are unaware of the existence of it;

This can be considered the beginning of a revenge of an instrument outperformed in the decades by the more refined and more developed horn pitched in C.

I hope this opennes of views can influence more countries and musician in future, this article was written to support the B flat in a C tuba world, but I would like to see the same for the C tuba on Bflat tuba world.

La rivincita della Tuba in Sib

Negli ultimi 60 anni, e più, la tuba in Sib è stata soppiantata in molte delle più grandi orchestre professionali nel mondo dalla Tuba in Do, con l’eccezione di tutti i paesi di lingua tedesca dove non ha mai conosciuto crisi, grazie alla loro forte tradizione musicale.

Anche in Italia la Tuba in Sib è stato lo strumento predominante per molti anni, direi anche troppo, perchè venne usata anche per tutto il repertorio lirico (ma la stragrande maggioranza delle opere sono state scritte per strumenti in Fa)……con i risultati che tutti possiamo immaginare, lo strumento usato in quei casi era il trombone contrabbasso in Sib, Cimbasso in Sib o comunque lo vogliate chiamare.

Molti dei tubisti europei che migrarono negli Stati Uniti agli inizi del ventesimo secolo, come Fritz Geib e August Helleberg, usarono molto strumenti in Sib.

Con le “nuove” generazioni la Tuba in Do divenne la Tuba Contrabbassa standard; Arnold Jacobs lanciò la moda della Tuba in Do 6/4 modello “York” (che è tutt’oggi il disegno più copiato nel mondo delle grandi tube in Do da orchestra) creando così una nuova tradizione, che è ancora un riferimento per molti dei moderni tubisti d’orchestra.

Questa moda ha raggiunto dimensioni globali, perciò oggi si possono trovare Tube in stile “York” a New York, Chicago, come ad Amsterdam, Tokyo o Sidney.

Sembra che il suono particolare di quel tipo di Tuba abbia infettato chiunque.

Anche io, dopo aver suonato la Tuba in Sib per qualche anno (ho vinto il mio primo concorso al Teatro San Carlo di Napoli con una Miraphone in Sib) sono passato alla Tuba in Do come mia unica Tuba Contrabbassa (B&S 3198, PT-6P), con la quale ho suonato poi per diversi anni.

Onestamente devo dire che la mia prima impressione,una volta passato alla Tuba in Do, era che tutto fosse molto più facile da suonare rispetto alla Tuba in Sib, l’articolazione era più chiara e…una cosa non da poco: gli scrocchi erano molti meno!!

Solo quando ho cominciato a fare audizioni in Germania ho deciso di tornare alla Tuba in Sib, ed il primo impatto è stato terribile, non ero capace di suonare un vero legato, ed il registro acuto era pieno di scrocchi….con il tempo e lo studio le cose sono cominciate a migliorare, ed ora che suono una Fafner (Melton), fisso il mio livello in base a quanto bene riesco a suonare quello strumento, in tutti gli aspetti: suono, intonazione, articolazione, legato, flessibilità.

Per un certo periodo il mio uso della Sib si limitava al tempo che dedicavo alla preparazione dei concorsi; ma poi qualcosa è cambiato, magari i miglioramenti tecnici hanno giocato un ruolo chiave, fatto sta che il mio gusto musicale è cambiato ed ho cominciato ad usare di più la Tuba in Sib.

La mia idea di suono orchestrale si è sviluppato, e da “due colori” (Tuba in Fa e Tuba in Do) è diventato a tre colori ( Tuba in Fa, Tuba in Do e Tuba in Sib), e con esso è cambiata la scelta dei diversi strumenti in base al repertorio.

Ho trovato molte più sfumature nella mia tavolozza di colori-suoni, e questa scelta che a prima vista potrebbe lasciare indifferenti gli altri colleghi d’orchestra, in realtà cambia il suono dell’orchestra in ogni diversa composizione.

C’è da dire che nel corso degli anni le ditte di strumenti hanno investito molto più tempo e denaro nello sviluppo di Tube professionali in Do rispetto a quelle in Sib, fino a poco tempo fa c’era un’infinità di Tube professionali in Do e molto poche in Sib.

Oggi anche se il design delle Tube in Sib non si è discostato da quello tradizionale (Kaiser Tuba ) le qualità performanti sono di molto superiori rispetto al passato, la suonabilità, la risposta, l’intonazione e la risonanza sono di prima classe.

Allora, cos’è cambiato? Perché un musicista dovrebbe suonare sia la Tuba in Do che quella in Sib?

Per me la Kaiser Tuba ha un suono molto scuro e profondo, con un centro molto definito, ogni volta che la suono sento veramente il peso del suo suono; la York sembra avere un suono più largo, con più alone, meno centrato ma che si amalgama molto bene con il resto dell’orchestra…si, lo so, è una descrizione troppo superficiale,una volta ho letto questa frase che rende molto l’idea: “parlare di musica è come ballare di architettura”.

Dovete sperimentare da soli la differenza tra i due suoni, non solo provando le diverse tube ma anche ascoltando le diverse orchestre nel mondo (con internet oggi abbiamo tutti i mezzi per farlo) e fare una comparazione in termini di suono, ne vale la pena.

Negli ultimi anni ho visto che alcuni tubisti delle più grandi orchestre americane si sono interessati alla tuba in Sib, questo è veramente un grande cambiamento visto che negli ultimi sessanta anni in America la Tuba in Do è stato lo strumento jolly con cui si faceva quasi tutto; il primo di cui sono venuto a sapere è Gene Pokorny (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) per cui la Melton ha sviluppato la versione a pistoni della Fafner, Carol Jantsch (Philadelphia Orchestra) so che era interessata alla Fafner, Matt Good (Dalla Symphony) ha una Fafner, ed altri ancora in altri paesi si stanno muovendo verso questo nuovo trend.

Brian Earl, tubista del Teatro alla Scala, mi ha detto che entrambe le volte che ha suonato il Ring di Wagner, i direttori Riccardo Muti prima, e Daniel Barenboim dopo, gli hanno chiesto di suonare la Tuba in Sib, lo strumento originale per il quale Wagner scrisse la parte del tuba contrabbassa.

Due motivi principali hanno portato a questo cambiamento:

- l’apertura mentale di alcuni musicisti innovatori, pronti per la sfida che aggiungere uno strumento diverso al proprio arsenale richiede.

- la meticolosità e la conoscenza di alcuni Direttori nel richiedere strumenti diversi, rispetto ad altri che ne ignorano addirittura l’esistenza.

Questa può essere considerata la rivincita di uno strumento caduto quasi in disuso per anni, al quale è stato preferito la più ricercata e più sviluppata Tuba in Do.

Spero che questa apertura di vedute possa influenzare ancora più paesi e musicisti in futuro, ho scritto questo articolo per supportare la Tuba in Sib in un mondo dove la Tuba in Do la fa da padrone, ma mi piacerebbe vedere lo stesso per la Tuba in Do nel mondo della Tuba in Sib.

Csardas, A very fast sequence of long tones

When it comes to practice virtuoso pieces like Csardas by Monti, the temptation, specially for youngers, is to go ahead trying uselessly to play it in time, losing lucidity and wanting to achieve as soon as possible the desired result trying to imitate our idols; there would be no problems except that our body is acquiring informations, reacting to stimuli that are sent; all these signals come very clear to our brain which forward them to our muscles,the portion of the brain that manages and distributes these pulses is unable to distinguish whether this informations are correct or not, but in fact we are firmly rooting in our brain a way to play that is not correct, imprecise and approximate; this will affect the performance of that specific piece for a long time, even if one day we will have changed the way to practice, there will always be the possibility of an interference of the old signal, ready to jump out when we least expect it, perhaps even during a concert in which we finally have the chance to show the world what we are worth, a moment of distraction and……bang! here is that signal which is part of our past way of playing, but that will never be erased from our brain and which will be ready to spoil the party.

So what?

….So try to do exactly what I wrote in the title, be patient and begin right now to break the song into small manageable fragments and play them very slowly, several times; think of physical therapy, if you had hurt a leg and you had to make a rehab would do the same thing: repetition of small movements performed slowly, until regain the natural mobility that allows you to start walking and running again.

It is never too slow, the title speaks for itself: “a very fast sequence of long tones”….and I’m not joking, how slow depends on your ability to manage those specific technical difficulties, it means that because you will need a excellent double tonguing, you should practice the world’s slowest double tonguing; play every note, sustained and without gaps between intervals, and always with your best sound; use the same technique that you need to use later (double tonguing), does not make sense to use simple tonguing just because you're playing slowly, would be to spend time practicing a technique that you will not need then in that context.

You can also make a further step in the deepening of double tonguing technique: pronounce it as often as possible, train your tongue to ta-ka ta-ka even when not playing, symply by saying it; I remember an old teacher who once said: “get used to pronounce these syllables, say it everywhere, when you're on the bus,in a bar or under the shower”….I might avoid doing so in a clear manner in public places in order to avoid obvious consideration by those around you…you decide J

You might ask: “but how long I will take to finally be able to play this piece as I would?”, Only you can answer this question or better than you, your body, the brain system that regulates the learning, needs clear signals repeated over time, most often studied as above, more easy will be for you to understand how much time you need to master a new song.

As for the Cantabile sections, do not understimate them, apply the same way of practice, you should spend on it the same time you use over the double tonguing, so that all the technical aspects ( in this case the legato) will be under control, This will allow you to express your musicality with greater ease and with no surprises.

Your key words should be:

- clear signals

- slow practice

- repetition

- patience

Csardas, Una sequenza molto veloce di note lunghe

Quando si tratta di cominciare a studiare brani virtuosistici come la Csardas di Monti la tentazione, specialmente quando si è più giovani, è quella di buttarsi a capofitto cercando invano di eseguirli a tempo, in quei momenti si perde la lucidità e si vuole raggiungere nel più breve tempo possibile il risultato sperato cercando così di imitare i nostri idoli; non ci sarebbe nessun problema se non fosse che il nostro corpo sta comunque apprendendo delle informazioni, reagendo a degli stimoli che noi gli mandiamo; tutti questi segnali arrivano ben chiari al nostro cervello che a sua volta li trasmette ai nostri muscoli, la parte del cervello che gestisce e distribuisce questi impulsi non è in grado di distinguere se queste informazioni sono corrette o meno ma, di fatto, stiamo radicando sempre di più nel nostro cervello un modo si suonare non corretto, impreciso ed approssimativo; ciò influenzerà l’esecuzione di quel brano specifico per molto tempo, anche se un giorno avremo cambiato modo di studiare ci sarà sempre la possibilità di un’interferenza del vecchio segnale, pronto a saltare fuori quando meno ce lo aspettiamo, magari proprio durante un concerto in cui finalmente abbiamo la possibilità di dimostrare al mondo quello che valiamo, un attimo di distrazione e tac….ecco quel segnale che fa parte di un nostro modo di suonare passato, ma che non sarà mai cancellato dal nostro cervello e che sarà pronto a rovinarci la festa.

E allora?

…e allora provate a fare esattamente quello che ho scritto nel titolo,

armatevi di pazienza e cominciate sin da subito a scomporre il brano in tanti piccoli frammenti facilmente gestibili, e suonateli molto lentamente svariate volte; pensate alla fisioterapia, se vi foste fatti male ad una gamba e doveste fare una riabilitazione fareste la stessa cosa: ripetizione di piccoli movimenti eseguiti molto lentamente, fino a che non riacquisite la mobilità naturale che vi permetta di ricominciare a camminare ed a correre.

Non sarà mai troppo lento, il titolo parla chiaro: “una sequenza molto veloce di note lunghe”…..e non scherzo, quanto lento dipenderà dalla vostra abilità nel gestire quelle determinate difficoltà tecniche, vuol dire che siccome nella Csardas avrete bisogno di un ottimo doppio staccato, dovrete esercitarvi cominciando a studiare il doppio staccato più lento del mondo; suonate ogni nota, lunga e senza buchi tra i diversi intervalli, e con il vostro miglior suono possibile; utilizzate la stessa tecnica che dovrete usare poi, non ha senso utilizzare lo staccato semplice solo perché state suonando lentamente, vorrebbe dire perdere tempo a studiare una tecnica che non vi servirà poi in quel contesto.

Potete fare anche un ulteriore passo nella strada dell’approfondimento della tecnica del doppio staccato: pronunciatelo più spesso possibile, allenate la lingua al ta-ca ta-ca anche quando non suonate, semplicemente dicendolo; mi ricordo un vecchio insegnante che una volta disse: “Abituatevi a pronunciare queste sillabe, ditele ovunque, quando siete in autobus, al bar, sotto la doccia”…..ecco, io magari eviterei di farlo in maniera evidente in luoghi pubblici per non incorrere in ovvie considerazioni da parte di chi vi circonda…poi fate voi J.

Magari vi chiederete: “ma quanto tempo mi ci vorrà per riuscire a suonare finalmente questo brano come dico io?” a questa domanda potrete rispondere solo voi o meglio il vostro corpo, il sistema cerebrale che regola l’apprendimento a bisogno di segnali chiari ripetuti nel tempo, più spesso studierete nel modo sopra citato più facile sarà per voi capire di quanto tempo avrete bisogno per padroneggiare un nuovo brano.

Per quanto riguarda le parti cantabili, non sottovalutatele, applicate lo stesso principio di studio, dedicategli lo stesso tempo che impiegate per studiare il doppio staccato, in modo che tutti gli aspetti tecnici (in questo caso il legato) siano sotto controllo, ciò vi permetterà di esprimere la vostra musicalità con maggior disinvoltura e senza sorprese.

Le vostre parole d’ordine dovranno essere:

-segnali chiari

-studiare lentamente

-ripetizione

-pazienza

A few tips on how to practice the Variations in olden style

Like every piece of music there are two main topics to work on:

1 - technical issues
2 - how to make music

1 What I do when I have to practice a new piece is to play very slowly at a mezzo forte dynamic, if the range is to high I play that passages an octave lower, if there is some double or triple tounging I do it also if the tempo is slow, I repeat a lot of time till my body has assimilated all the movements (breathing,lips vibration,embouchure,fingerings) is not only a question of reading a piece of music but to teach our body to encode that piece of music.
Practice with the mouthpiece specially the II variation, to me is the most challenging part because we need a smooth legato in mezzo forte and piano dynamic, so a very solid control of our buzz (slur) is required.
Be sure when you buzz to play every note at the exact pitch,then play the intervals going up or down with glissando and stop only when you have reached the right intonation, help yourself with a piano.
Open your ears! if the note you are buzzing doesn't have the same intonation of the note you are playing with piano, tune it like when you are looking to your loved radio station, in this way you will play in tune but also you will set up in the right way your embouchure, teaching your facial muscles and your jaw what they have to do with every note, and also HOW they have to move to go from one note to another one, we can call this approach: "unconscious learning".
When you'll find a particularly difficult passage, extrapolate it like if it is one of your daily drills and practice in all the different keys.

2 - When all the technical skills are under your control, you can go on with the most important aspect of your performance: the music!
Contrary to what you might think the first step to be a better musician has nothing to do with personality, inspirations or feeling, indeed try first to be strictly loyal to all the informations you find on the score:
-rhythm (rhythm is mathematics, nothing more nothing less) the metronome has to be your best friend while practicing, but do not let it just turned on; listen to the beat and spread correctly all the notes between it, you can set your metronome to click the different subdivisions like eighth notes, triplets or sixteenths but please.......play in time!
- articlutation signs, these signs make a "very" big difference on the meaning of the piece in question, while you are reading a book or a newspaper you would never think to use different words from what you find, so why you should in music paper?
- dynamics this is the point that guides the performance from a merely execution of the notes to the magic of music, try to have more colours as possible from "pp" to "ff", and also on "crescendo" and "decrescendo", usually we find all this markings on the score, they are not only "decorations" but real
"road sign" that will lead us to the destination without which, we'll get lost in the world of anonymity.

Only when you have mastered the three points above you can trascend the score to express your soul, as in poetry, but only you know your interior path.

Come in ogni brano musicale ci sono due aspetti su cui lavorare:

1 – tecnica

2 – come fare musica

1 Ogni volta che devo studiare un nuovo pezzo, comincio suonandolo molto lentamente ad una dinamica mezzo forte, se l’estensione è acuta, per non affaticarmi suono l’ottava sotto, se ci sono dei passaggi che richiedono doppio o triplo staccato, li studio utilizzando quelle tecniche anche ad un tempo lento, ripeto ogni frase molte volte fino a che il mio corpo non ha assimilato tutti i movimenti (respirazione, vibrazione delle labbra, imboccatura, diteggiatura), non si tratta solo di leggere un nuovo brano ma di farlo codificare al nostro corpo .

Studiate con il bocchino specialmente la II variazione, per me è la parte più impegnativa in quanto abbiamo bisogno di un ottimo controllo del legato su intervalli anche ampi sia nella dinamica di “mezzo forte” che “piano”, è quindi indispensabile un solido controllo della nostra vibrazione con il bocchino.

Assicuratevi mentre vibrate con il bocchino di suonare ogni nota con una intonazione corretta, suonate poi tutti gli intervalli glissando da una nota all’altra assicurandovi di fermarvi solo quando avrete raggiunto l’altezza giusta della nota d’arrivo, aiutatevi con una qualsiasi tastiera.

Aprite le orecchie! Se la nota che state suonando con il bocchino non ha la stessa altezza della nota che state suonando con la tastiera, sintonizzatela come fareste quando cercate la vostra stazione preferita alla radio, in questo modo suonerete intonati ed inoltre imposterete correttamente la vostra imboccatura, insegnando ai vostri muscoli facciali ed alla vostra mandibola come muoversi per produrre per ogni singola nota, ma anche come si dovranno spostare per andare da una nota all’altra, possiamo chiamare questo approccio: “apprendimento inconscio”.

Quando trovate un passaggio particolarmente difficile, estrapolatelo come se fosse uno dei vostri esercizi giornalieri, e studiatelo in tutte le tonalità.

2 – Quando tutti gli aspetti tecnici saranno sotto controllo, potrete passare alla parte più importante della vostra esibizione: la musica!

Contrariamente a quello e che potreste pensare, il primo passo per essere un musicista migliore non ha niente a che vedere con la personalità, l’ispirazione o i sentimenti, provate invece ad essere innanzitutto strettamente fedeli a tutte le informazioni che trovate nella parte:

-ritmo (il ritmo è matematica, ne più ne meno), il metronomo deve diventare il vostro miglior amico mentre studiate, ma non và solo lasciato acceso; ascoltate il battere e cercate di distribuire correttamente tutte le note all’interno dei battiti secondo la notazione scritta, potete aiutarvi impostando le diverse divisioni nel vostro metronomo come ottavi, terzine, sedicesimi ma per favore…..suonate in tempo!

-segni di articolazione, questi segni fanno una grande differenza sul senso del pezzo in questione, mentre leggete un libro o un quotidiano non vi verrebbe mai in mente di leggere parole diverse da quelle che trovate scritte, allora perché dovreste farlo leggendo un foglio di musica?

-dinamiche, questo è il punto cruciale che trasforma la performance da mera esecuzione delle note in magia della musica, provate ad avere più colori possibili tra “pp” e “ff” e tra “crescendo” e “ decrescendo”; generalmente troviamo tutte queste indicazioni nella parte, non sono semplicemente decorazioni ma veri e propri segnali stradali che indicano la direzione verso la nostra destinazione e senza i quali ci perderemo nel mondo dell’anonimato.

Solo quando sarete in grado di padroneggiare i tre punti precedenti, potrete trascendere la partitura per poter esprimere finalmente la vostra anima, come in poesia, ma solo voi conoscete questa vostra strada interiore

The term 'bel canto' refers to the Italian vocal style of the 18th and early 19th centuries which the qualities of which include perfect legato production throughout the range; the secret to bel canto, some claim, lays in continuity of tone and in the ability to pass from one musical phrase to the next with little to no interruption.

Here is a example on how we should play in the vocalise style, like with the voice we have to keep the control of the sound through all the notes.
But how we can improve our legato? the easiest thing we should do, is to check it with the mouthpiece; put a plastic tube (10 cm - 3,93 inches) in the backbore just to have more easiness during the sound emission and start play every single not, be sure you blow the right air, you can control it putting your hand just in front of the tube or using the inspiron.
Take care also on the quality of your vibration, as to be rich and warm.
Once you have under control every single note, start to play two or three notes togheter using the glissato to move from one note to another, the most important thing now is the sound of the glissato, has to be the same of the first and last note without any interruption or leak of sound, the glissato is the bridge that connect the notes, in other words is what we call "legato".
Go on the same way adding notes, you are building your legato step by step.
The first goal has to be always the quality of your sound, and only YOU know when you have to breath or how loud or soft you can play; specially when you practice, when you are building your future performance, try to find the balance between all the variables needed in brass playing and keep in mind always this word: QUALITY!

PRACTICE!!!!! BUT HOW? - STUDIARE!!!!! MA COME?

I remember when I was a student at the Conservatory, before my undergraduate exam, I didn’t spent so much time practicing because I attended also a high school and I did not have enough time to do everything.

After the exam and summer holidays, for the respect I had of my teacher I started practice four hours everyday: two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.

I didn’t know well what to do, so my first goal was to play keeping an eye on the clock until I played four hours at the end of the day.

The first day was very hard because my lips were not used to work so much; I started playing very easy things like long tones, slur and articulation, and I repeated the same exercises morning and afternoon.

After a while became more easy for me to play few hours every day.

At this point I had the good luck to meet Roger Bobo, I studied with him in Fiesole (near Florence) for one year as a regular student, he gaves me a very accurate practice routine.

I practiced for one year every day six to seven hours following his teachings, It worked, because the same year I won two jobs in Italy, one in Napoli that was my first full time job for eight years…at that time still I didn’t understand really the reason why I was practicing that way, maybe I was too young, but I had a complete faith of my teacher, so I did exactely what he taught me.

Then, I started taking lessons with many other eminent brass players around the world, but this time trying to understand every aspect of the brass playing;

I remember when I started to have lessons with Rex Martin, I paid much attention to every single word during my lessons and during all the other students’ lessons and I tried to stay focused on my playing also , preserving all the questions for lunch or dinner time.

I found that if I stayed focused on every single note I was playing, my level improved day by day, but I had to take more breaks….not to relax my lips but my mind.

So when I was a student I started with the “quantity” of practice to discover later the “quality” of practice.

I told you my story, the show which could be the evolution of a practice routine.

At the beginning of a musical life is the teacher who gives the student the “treatment” to develop the basics, and usually the student follows strictly the instructions……isn’t it ????

Maybe will keep this routine for a long time while having new experiences with different teachers.

At some point if he has fully absorbed all the informations in its possession,he will create his own routine.

Going back to the main question: How to practice?

1 - first of all you need to know your “needs”, you have to learn to be the doctor of yourself, learn to recognize the symptoms of your problems;

I think this point is not so difficult, everyone knows their pain.

2 – you need to find the therapy, if you don’t know what to do….try the easiest thing: ASK!

There are many teachers around the world that can help you, don’t esitate to ask.

Normally when a student goes to a master class or a private lesson with an eminent teacher he cares to much to play good, specially if it is the first time, but remember you are not there to show him/her how good you are but to find a solution to your problems.

3 – Experiment. Once you have the knowledge about certain problems you have to experiment on yourself to decide if what you learned from a teacher rather then another work for you.

If after a while you do not see improvements the reasons could many:

- you didn’t understand very well how to solve the problem.

- you understood, but during the practice you are doing something

different from what you should.

- the teacher with which you had lesson didn’t know the topic, or taught

you something wrong.

For each of this problems go back to point number 2 : ask again to as many qualified people as possible.

4 If you have not had any problems with point number 3…you are on the

right track.

Remember that from this point you “START” to improve, many make the mistake of thinking that when they have solved a problem they have arrived….your trip to success starts here!

Work hard on your practice routine every day to see the improvements, don’t be lazy, everytime you do not do something…someone else is doing it.

5 evolve! When you have assimilated the exercises on your practice routine, chance it, maybe with something more difficult or different; try to carve your skills from all the different perspectives.

6 be patient! When you start to work on a new skill take your time, leave time to your body to react to this new input. Remember this point specially when you are going to learn a new solo piece or a challenging repertoire,if you are able to know how long will take to master it, you’ll live your musical lifetime without going in a hurry and your performances will be much better and easier.

Ricordo che quando ero in Conservatorio, prima del diplomino, non studiavo molto perché contemporaneamente frequentavo le scuole superiori e non avevo tempo per fare tutto.

Dopo l’esame e le vacanze estive decisi, per il grande rispetto che avevo verso il mio insegnante di allora, di cominciare a studiare quattro ore tutti i giorni: due ore di mattino e due ore di pomeriggio.

Non sapevo bene cosa fare, il mio primo obiettivo era semplicemente quello di tenere d’occhio l’orologio fino a che non avessi suonato quattro ore alla fine della giornata.

Il primo giorno è stato molto pesante perché le mie labbra non erano abituate a lavorare così tanto, ho cominciato con cose molto semplici come note lunghe, legato e staccato, ripetendo gli stessi esercizi sia il mattino che di pomeriggio.

Dopo un po’ mi sono abituato, e non è stato più un problema suonare diverse ore al giorno.

Dopo il Conservatorio ho avuto la fortuna di studiare con Roger Bobo alla Scuola di musica di Fiesole come studente effettivo, il quale ci aveva dato un piano di studi molto accurato e che seguivo in maniera molto disciplinata.

Durante quell’anno ho studiato tutti i giorni dalle 6 alle 7 ore seguendo i suoi insegnamenti ed il suo piano di studio…ed ha funzionato perché poi sempre nello stesso anno ho vinto un’audizione ed il concorso come tuba stabile al San Carlo di Napoli dove sono stato per otto anni.

In quel periodo non avevo ancora compreso realmente i motivi per cui studiavo in quel modo, seguendo quel piano di studi, forse ero troppo giovane, ma avevo una completa fiducia nel mio insegnante di allora (Bobo) perciò facevo esattamente quello che mi aveva insegnato.

Ho cominciato poi a prendere lezioni con molti altri insegnanti eminenti di tutto il mondo, cercando però di capire ogni aspetto della tecnica degli ottoni.

Ricordo che quando ho cominciato a studiare con Rex Martin, prestavo molta attenzione ad ogni sua parola durante le mie lezioni, ma anche durante le lezioni degli altri cercando di assorbire ogni dettaglio; dedicavo la stessa attenzione inoltre ad ascoltarmi mentre suonavo, lasciando tutte le domande che dovevo porgli per i pranzi e le cene.

Ho notato che se studiavo stando concentrato su ogni singola nota che suonavo, il mio livello migliorava di giorno in giorno, ma dovevo fare più pause…non per riposare le labbra ma la mente.

Riassumendo: quando ero studente ho cominciato con uno studio di “quantità” per scoprire poi lo studio di “qualità”.

Vi ho raccontato la mia storia per mostrarvi quella che potrebbe essere l’evoluzione di un piano di studio.

All’inizio di una “vita musicale” è l’insegnante che dà la “terapia” all’allievo per sviluppare le tecniche di base, e normalmente lo studente segue in maniera molto diligente le istruzioni che gli sono impartite….non è vero??????

Magari potrà seguire questi piani di studio per un lungo periodo anche mentre farà ulteriori esperienze con nuovi insegnanti.

Ad un certo punto se avrà completamente assorbito tutte le informazioni in suo possesso, avrà la possibilità di creare un suo piano di studio personale.

Tornando alla domanda principale: Come studiare?

1 – prima di tutto dovete conoscere i vostri “bisogni”, dovete imparare ad essere il Dottore di voi stessi, imparare a riconoscere i sintomi dei vostri problemi; non credo sia molto difficile dal momento che ognuno sente i propri “dolori”.

2 – dovete trovare la terapia, se non sapete come….fate la cosa più semplice: CHIEDETE!

Ci sono molti ottimi insegnanti in giro per il mondo che vi possono aiutare, non esitate a chiedere il loro aiuto.

Generalmente quando uno studente partecipa ad un master class o prende delle lezioni private con un personaggio importante si preoccupa troppo di dover suonare bene, specialmente se è la prima lezione, ma ricordate che non siete lì per mostrare quanto siete bravi, piuttosto per trovare una soluzione ai vostri problemi.

3 - Sperimentare. Una volta che avete acquisito una certa conoscenza riguardo alle soluzioni dei vostri problemi, dovete sperimentarle per decidere se quello che avete imparato da un insegnante piuttosto che da un altro funziona su di voi.

Se dopo un po’ di tempo non vedete miglioramenti le ragioni potrebbero essere diverse:

- non avete compreso bene quello che vi è stato insegnato.

- avete capito, ma durante lo studio fate qualcosa di diverso da quello

che dovreste.

- l’insegnante con il quale avete fatto lezione non conosce l’argomento, o

vi ha insegnato qualcosa di sbagliato.

Per ognuno di questi problemi tornate al punto 2: chiedete ancora al maggior numero di persone qualificate possibile.

4 – Se non avete avuto nessun problema al punto numero 3…siete sulla strada giusta.

Ricordate che da questo punto “COMINCIATE” a migliorare, molti

commettono l’errore di pensare che se risolveranno un problema sono

arrivati…..ma il vostro viaggio verso il successo comincia qui!!

Lavorate duramente sul vostro piano di studio quotidianamente per vedere i risultati, non siate pigri, ogni volta che voi non fate qualcosa…qualcun altro lo sta facendo.

5 – Evolvete. Quando avete assimilato gli esercizi che compongono il vostro piano di studi, cambiateli, magari con altri più difficili o diversi.

Provate a “scolpire” la vostra abilità nel padroneggiare uno strumento da tutte le prospettive possibili.

6 – Siate pazienti! Quando cominciate a lavorare su una nuova difficoltà prendetevi il tempo necessario, il vostro corpo avrà bisogno di tempo per assimilare in nuovi input.

Ricordatevi di questo specialmente se dovrete studiare un nuovo pezzo da solista o comunque un repertorio particolarmente impegnativo, se sapete dal principio di quanto tempo avrete bisogno per padroneggiarlo, la vostra vita musicale scorrerà molto più facilmente e senza ansie e di sicuro anche le vostre esecuzioni saranno migliori.

Dopo il mio ultimo master class a Glasgow ho chiesto ad un mio studente di scrivere una recensione a proposito della sua esperienza presso la Scottish Academy, in modo di rendere disponibile a tutti gli altri studenti italiani e non la sua esperienza:

Studente di Tuba presso il Conservatorio “G.Rossini” di Pesaro

Giugno. Alessandro Fossi mi dice che è stato invitato a fare una master class all’Accademia Musicale di Glasgow per la fine di ottobre e che ha la possibilità di portare un allievo del suo conservatorio. Mi chiede se ho voglia di accompagnarlo. Non me lo faccio dire due volte e accetto l’invito! Subito il mio pensiero va al viaggio: come al solito quando un tubista deve viaggiare in aereo si presenta il problema di come trasportare il proprio strumento. Per fortuna che dall’accademia mi fanno sapere che non c’è problema perché potrò usufruire dei loro strumenti... Ottimo!

L’impatto con l’accademia è subito buono: l’edificio è molto bello e moderno; ci si accorge subito dell’ottima organizzazione e veniamo accolti con grande cordialità dal Capo del Dipartimento Ottoni dell’Accademia, Prof. Bryan Allen. Alessandro va subito nella classe di tuba per cominciare le lezioni individuali, mentre io vengo accompagnato da B.Allen nella sala concerto dell’Accademia dove - così riesco a stento a capire - si stanno esibendo dei ragazzi. Quando entro c’è un ragazzo che sta suonando un pezzo a solo con la tuba e tra il pubblico ci sono gli studenti dei vari corsi. Dopo il tubista, si esibiscono due ragazze (rispettivamente oboe e flauto) e per finire un ragazzo col trombone. Ogni volta che uno studente entra sul palco per l’esecuzione (rigorosamente in abito da concerto) si rivolge innanzi tutto al pubblico, dando una breve descrizione del brano che andrà ad eseguire e augurando a tutti un buon ascolto. Finita l’esibizione e gli applausi, prendono la parola due insegnanti seduti tra il pubblico che commentano e danno un giudizio e “costringono” gli altri studenti a commentare e a relazionarsi con chi si è esibito. Più tardi mi dicono che ogni studente deve esibirsi per ben sei volte durante l’anno accademico e che ogni volta riceve un punteggio che farà media nella valutazione finale di fine anno.
Finita questa specie di saggio-recital, rimango nella concert hall, dove nel giro di qualche minuto viene allestito il palco per l’imminente lezione. Si tratta di un ensemble di ottoni e percussioni che deve provare Fanfare for The Common Man di A.Copland per il concerto del giorno dopo. Alla tuba c’è Lauren, una ragazza molto simpatica alla quale (con non poche difficoltà dovute al mio inglese) chiedo un po’ di cose sulla classe di tuba e sull’Accademia. Con mio stupore ed immenso piacere mi dice che nel corso di tuba ci sono quattro ragazze e due ragazzi! Penso subito che mi piacerebbe che fosse così anche in Italia!
Il pomeriggio prosegue con le lezioni individuali, poi mi affaccio in una sala in cui stavolta a suonare c’è un ensemble di tube ed euphonium. A dirigere il gruppo è Tony Swainson, uno degli insegnanti di tuba, che ha arrangiato per questa formazione un quartetto di tube molto interessante di Gunther Schuller.
Nel frattempo mi vengono dati a disposizione due strumenti: una tuba in fa Kalison e una Kurath (Willson) in do molto grande... niente male. L’accademia oltre a queste tube ha anche una vecchia tuba in sib stile kaiser della Rudolf Meinl. Credo che questi strumenti vengano poco utilizzati, dato che (almeno tra gli studenti) sembra che non ci sia altra tuba all’infuori della mib con il tipico settaggio British dei pistoni 4+1 con compensazione. Mi spiegano che ciò è dovuto alla loro grande tradizione delle brass band, in cui si richiede quel suono e quella forma di tuba.

Il secondo giorno mi gusto le prove dei Quadri di un’esposizione nell’arrangiamento di Philip Jones per ensemble di ottoni e percussioni. Che musica! E che insieme! Il direttore dà ai ragazzi le ultime indicazioni per il concerto della sera. Più tardi ho la possibilità di assistere ad altri saggi di valutazione; questa volta si esibiscono trombe, corni e tromboni. Devo dire che tutti suonano con grande professionalità e sembra che si trovino a loro agio a suonare di fronte ad un pubblico.
Si fa sera ed arriva il grande momento: nel suggestivo scenario del sontuoso edificio del Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum si stanno per esibire i ragazzi che ho visto e ascoltato provare in questi due giorni. L’acustica è da grande cattedrale, lo sfondo quello di un magnifico organo e l’aria che si respira è quella delle grandi serate. Si comincia con Fanfare for the Common Man; poi si passa alla Canzon à 8 di Giovanni Gabrieli e poi ad un bellissimo arrangiamento della tipica Greensleeves. Anche l’organista ha il suo momento di gloria con la celeberrima Toccata e fuga in Re minore di J.S.Bach. Poi è il momento di Alessandro Fossi, che delizia il pubblico con l’Antifonia “Omnes Gentes” (originariamente scritta da G.A. Fioroni per voce e organo) e presentata in questa occasione nella nuova veste per tuba e organo. Finisce il primo tempo; il pubblico è numeroso e molto educato. Per i ragazzi il bello deve ancora venire: infatti finalmente è ora di suonare i Quadri di un’esposizione! La musica è coinvolgente e l’esecuzione richiede particolare attenzione e una grande capacità di saper suonare in gruppo. Gli studenti se la cavano alla grande e dopo il concerto si va tutti a bere una birra in un tipico Scottish pub.

Il terzo giorno comincia con le solite lezioni individuali. Io ho la possibilità di fare lezione con il già citato insegnante di tuba Tony Swainson e successivamente con l’insegnante di trombone John Kenny. Trovo molto interessante e stimolante ascoltare i consigli di altri insegnanti.
È pomeriggio e la piccola esperienza alla Scottish Royal Academy sta volgendo al termine. Ma il bello deve ancora venire! Nella Guinness Room comincia la masterclass aperta al pubblico in cui tre delle studentesse di tuba si esibiscono con il pianista di fronte ad un pubblico interessato e ad Alessandro, il quale dispensa come suo solito importanti consigli sulla tecnica strumentale e sulla prassi esecutiva dei concerti suonati. Finita la masterclass, giusto pochi minuti per sistemarsi ed Alessandro è pronto ad esibirsi di fronte a quei ragazzi che nei giorni precedenti hanno ascoltato le sue parole. La selezione consiste in tre brani, saggiamente scelti e bilanciati: ad aprire il recital è una world premiere! Si tratta della California Suite per tuba e piano che il compositore Giancarlo Aquilanti ha scritto per Alessandro: una raffinata musica che mette in mostra le abilità tecniche ed il lirismo del solista. Il suono della tuba viaggia libero e il bravissimo pianista Scott Mitchell valorizza davvero bene il fraseggio della tuba. Poi è il momento di scaldare il pubblico con un classico dei pezzi virtuosistici: Tema e variazioni dal Carnevale di Venezia di J.B.Arban. Le variazioni volano in scioltezza una dopo l’altra... Per finire una celebre aria di quel Bel Canto italiano che dà il titolo all’album di Alessandro: è Una furtiva lagrima dall’ Elisir d’amore di Donizetti.
Il pubblico pare proprio soddisfatto e applaude con vigore. Non potrebbe essere altrimenti dopo una così grande interpretazione!
La piccola ma intensa parentesi scozzese è ormai conclusa, e quello che mi porto a casa è senza dubbio un bellissimo ricordo. Primo fra tutti è ovviamente l’aver conosciuto un nuovo posto, nuova gente, il loro modo di fare e il loro relazionarsi con la musica. Il paragone con l’Italia è inevitabile... Mi è piaciuto molto il vivere l’Accademia quotidianamente. Ognuno lì è coinvolto per buona parte della giornata dalle attività dell’Accademia e ha modo di condividere molto tempo con i propri compagni di studio.
Da un punto di vista strettamente didattico ci sono - a mio modo di vedere - due punti fondamentali che sono una grande marcia in più rispetto al sistema dei conservatori italiani. Uno è la gran quantità di lezioni di musica di insieme: in soli tre giorni ho avuto modo di apprezzare ensemble di ottoni, quartetti di tube, big band! E devo dire che quando i ragazzi hanno suonato in concerto, quest’abitudine ed educazione a far musica insieme si è notata. L’altra cosa fondamentale è l’abituare gli studenti che vogliono intraprendere la carriera da musicisti ad esibirsi di fronte a un pubblico (oltretutto molto competente, essendo composto dagli stessi studenti) frequentemente, e ricevere anche un giudizio da persone competenti. Non è in fondo molto diverso da ciò che accadrà agli studenti da qui a breve: si troveranno ad affrontare un pubblico che accorrerà per sentire cosa hanno di bello da suonare, oppure si troveranno ad una commissione che li giudicherà per un eventuale posto in orchestra.
Da quel che ho potuto constatare, questi due punti saldi della didattica dell’Accademia scozzese sono degli aspetti che i conservatori italiani credo dovrebbero prendere in considerazione per formare dei musicisti all’altezza degli standard richiesti. Non si tratta solamente della qualità dei docenti in quanto suppongo che anche alla RSAMD ci saranno insegnanti più o meno bravi; piuttosto del tempo e degli sforzi che si dedicano per dare agli studenti una formazione il più possibile completa. Poi si potrebbe notare la differenza tra le strutture: moderna, spaziosa ed efficientissima quella scozzese; spesso fatiscente e talvolta male organizzata quella italiana. Ma non mi sento di focalizzare troppo l’attenzione su questo aspetto in quanto si tratta di risorse economiche differenti: in fondo il conservatorio italiano è totalmente pubblico e consente agli studenti un anno di lezioni ad un costo irrisorio. La sicuramente maggiore risorsa economica scozzese permetterà però quest’anno agli studenti di godere degli insegnamenti e della musica di grandi musicisti di livello internazionale: Alessandro Fossi, Allen Vizzutti, i Mnozil Brass, i German Brass…
Insomma... ora so che la musica in Scozia non è fatta solo di kilt e cornamuse, ma di giovani in gamba e con un solido sistema didattico che li supporta!

Tuba student at "G.Rossini" Conservatory, Pesaro

Last October I was invited by my teacher Alessandro Fossi to a master class at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

The first impact with the Academy was very good: the building is beautiful and modern, we immediately notice the excellent organization, we were welcomed by the Head of the Brass Department Bryan Allen.

Alessandro start lessons with the students of the Academy while Bryan drive me at the Concert Hall where other students are attending a performing class.

When I come in a tuba player is playing a solo piece, in the audience there are many other students.

Everytime a student go on stage (strictly in concert dress) present to the audience the program.

After the performance two teachers judge the show and ask other students to comment and relate to who has performed.

Later I knew that every student must play this kind of performance six times during the year on which they get ratings.

After this lesson I remain in the Concert Hall, where in a while the Academy brass ensemble rehearse Fanfare of the Common Man by Aaron Copland for the next day concert. At the tuba there is Lauren, a very pleasant girl, to whom I ask some questions about the tuba class and the academy ( with some difficulties due to my english), with my amazement she says that there are four girls and two guys in the class and I answer I wish it were the same in italy too!

The afternoon goes on with individual lessons, then I look in a room where I find a tuba euphonium ensemble, the teacher and conductor this time is Tony Swainson who arranged for this group a very interesting tuba quartet by Gunter Shuller.

In the meantime I have the possibility to play with two tubas owned by the academy: a Kalison F tuba and a huge Kurath (Willson) CC tuba...not bad.

In the tuba store room I find also a Rudolf Meinl 5/4 BBflat, but I think these instruments are not played so often, at least among students, that play mostly british Eflat compensating tubas. They told me this is due to their big brass band tradition where that kind of sound is required.

The second day I enjoy so much “Pictures of an Exibition”, arranged by the late Philip Jones for brass ensemble and percussion and played by the RSAMD Brass Ensemble. What music! And what ensemble. The conductor give to the students latest advices before the evening concert.

Later I have the possiblity to attend other performing class,with trumpet, trombone and horn students. I have to say that all of them play with great professionalism and seems they feel confortable to play in public.

It’s evening and it’s time for the big moment, in the suggestive scenario of the Kelvingrove Art Museum and Gallery the students I’ve seen these days are going to perfom.

The sound is that of a great cathedral, in the background there is a magnificent organ and we breathe the air of big events.

The first piece is “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, second is Canzon a 8 by Giovanni Gabrieli, and then a beautiful arrangement of the traditional Greensleeves, even the organist has his moment of glory with Toccata and Fugue in D minor by J.S.Bach.

Then it’s time of Alessandro Fossi to delights the audience with the Antifona “Omnes Gentes” (originally written by G.A.Fioroni for voice and organ). Finally on the second half of the concert there is “Pictures at an Exibition” in the program, the music is involving and the execution requires a great attention and a great ability to play in ensemble.

The students did a great job and after the concert we go all togheter to have a beer in a typical “Scottish” Pub.

The third day begins as usual with the individual lessons, and I have too the possibility to have lesson with the tuba teacher Tony Swainson and after that with the trombone teacher John Kenny.

I find it very interesting and stimulating to listen to the advices of other teachers.

Is afternoon and my “little” experience at the Royal Scottish Academy is coming to the end….but the best is yet to come!

In the Guinness room begins the master class where three students perfom with piano in front of an interested audience and Alessandro, who deliver as usual important tips on technical skills and on the musicality of the performed repertoire.

At the end of the master class, just few minutes to set the stage and Alessandro is ready to perfom his recital in front of the students that during these days listened to his advices.

The program consist in three pieces: the first one is a world premiere! Is the “California Suite” that Giancarlo Aquilanti wrote for Alessandro, a refined music that showcases the technical ability and the lyrism of the soloist.

The second piece is the famous Theme and Variations on the Carnival of Venice by J.B.Arban, the variations flying smoothly one after the other. The last piece is a famous “Aria” in the Bel Canto Style ,which gives the name to the Alessandro’s solo album: Una Furtiva Lagrima from L’Elisir d’Amore by Gaetano Donizetti, the public seems satisfied and applauded vigorously. It could not be otherwise after such a great performance!

My short but intense scottish experience is now over, and what I bring at home with me are beautiful memories.

I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity to know a new place, new people, their habits and the way they approach the music.

The comparison with Italy is inevitable…

I liked so much to live the academy , everybody is involved daily with the activities of the Academy and has so much time to share with their classmates.

I think there are mainly to things that make a big step ahead from italian Conservatory : first is the so many ensemble lessons, in only three days I had the possibility to listen brass ensemble, tuba ensemble,even big band!

And I must say that when the students have played in concert, this habit and education to make music together was noted.

The other thing is that students who want to pursue a career as a musician are accustomed to perform in front of an audience very often.

It is not ultimately very different from what happens to students from here soon: will face a public that will hasten to hear what they have to play, or to a committee that will judge them for a possible spot in the orchestra.

From what I have seen, these two strong points of the music education at the Scottish Academy are aspects that Italian Conservatory should consider more to form up musicians to the international standards required.

Is not only the quality of teachers,rather the time and effort that is required to give students as complete as possibile training.

I could notice the difference between the structures: modern, spacious and highly efficient the Scottish, often run-down and not well organized Italians.

But I would not focus too much attention to this aspect because we are talking also of different economic resources, after all the italian Conservatory is totally public and allows students a year of lessons at a fraction of the cost.

Certainly the biggest economic resource, however this year will allow Scottish students to enjoy teachings and music of great musicians of international level like: Alessandro Fossi, Allen Vizzutti, Mnozil Brass, German Brass…

Well ... now I know that music in Scotland is not just about kilts and bagpipes, but young talented students and with a solid educational system that will support theme!

The birth of the new Melton/Meinl Weston 5450RA CC tuba "Tuono"

The story of the Tuono started a couple of years ago when I was trying the brand new GR-51 of a student of mine;

I was so impressed by the sound of this tuba that I asked Gerhard Meinl if there was the possibility to create a CC version of that tuba; he answered that there was already the idea to develop a new Melton rotary CC Tuba...and so we began.

After several attempts the first prototype was what you see in the picture below:

La storia della Tuono cominciò un paio di anni fa, quando stavo provando la GR-51 che un mio allievo aveva appena comprato;

mi piaceva così tanto il suono di quello strumento che chiesi a Gerhard Meinl se ci fosse la possibilità di creare una versione in Do di quella tuba; mi rispose che c'era già l'idea di sviluppare una nuova Melton in Do a cilindri...e così cominciammo.

From this point we tried to focus more on the response of the instrument in all registers.

I changed three different leadpipes, and at the end I chose the one more conical: smaller at the beginning very large at the end.

We changed also the design of the 5th valve slide (I wanted the more open design as possible) and fitted a bigger valve section.

A questo punto abbiamo cominciato a focalizzarci molto sulla facilità di emissione in tutti i registri.

Ho cambiato tre cannelli diversi, ed alla fine ho scelto quello più conico: più piccolo all'inizio e molto largo alla fine.

Ho fatto cambiare il disegno della pompa del 5° cilindro (la volevo più aperta possibile).

E' stato montato inoltre un set di cilindri più grande.

TO MUTE OR NOT TO MUTE?

During my musical life as tuba player I didn’t use so often mutes while playing, specially during practice.

For a long time I had only one mute that I used for all my tubas, with the result that I was not confortable to play in this situations for many reasons:

when a mute is not designed for a specific bell we can have many trouble like a sound that is not even, stiff high register or low register, intonation problems.

Then, I was looking for a practice mute to play when my baby daughter was sleeping, and I had the luck to meet Johann Schlipfinger, which let me test many of his mutes.

The first time, I bought from him a practice mute for my F tuba and I start to experiment this new feeling.

Play with a practice mute is not the same as play without, but I didn’t find any problem, instead I found it helpfull to play each note with a better center.

As second step I ordered two “tour mute”, one for my F and another one for my contrabasses (Melton “Baer” CC and “Fafner” BBflat).

I think that the bigger “tour mute” as to be something like a prototype,

but the result is excellent.

I feel much better to play with those mutes ( tour mute), I’m able to play everything without problems: very soft, very loud, legato, articulated, high register as well as low register.

The sound of these tour mutes, used as practice mutes, is a bit louder then the specific practice mute, but I can deal any different musical challenge and I can use it during all my hours of study.

The sound, used as straight mute, is beautiful, not so much metallic, but even in all registers, with a perfect intonation and free blowing; playing with mute has never been easier.

As accessories there are three clamps with different rubbers that allow

to choose different sounds, and two deadening rings that can be applied to use it as practice mute, I cut other two deadening rings of a different material to have a softer sound.

The last merit of those mutes is that can be disassembled in two parts, and put it in the bell of the tuba, a very confortable solution for freelance, soloist and chamber music players.

Practice with the mute, in addition to not disturb the neighbors, give us a different approach with the instrument, and a different approach means different stimuli, in this way we can add an enrichment to our playing: sound, focus, intonation, legato and articulation can improve.

Don’t do that could mean give up to these new improvements.

I suggest to take care to the choice of the mutes in the same way as you choose your tuba or your mouthpiece, and not only as something that we must have, this is part of our professional background too.

CON O SENZA SORDINA?

Nel corso della mia vita musicale come tubista non ho usato molto spesso la sordina, specialmente durante lo studio.

Per molto tempo ho avuto solamente una sordina per tutte le mie tube, con il risultato che quando la dovevo utilizzare non mi trovavo a mio agio per diverse ragioni:

quando una sordina non è disegnata per una campana specifica, possiamo avere diversi problemi come un suono non omogeneo, registro acuto o grave difficile da suonare, problemi d’intonazione.

Poi, ho cominciato a cercare una sordina da studio per poter suonare quando mia figlia dormiva ed ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare Johann Schlipfinger, che mi ha fatto provare molti dei suoi prodotti.

Per prima cosa, ho subito ordinato una delle sue practice mute per la mia tuba in Fa ed ho cominciato a sperimentare questa nuova esperienza.

Suonare con una sordina da studio non è lo stesso che suonare senza, ma non ho trovato problemi, anzi mi è stata d’aiuto per centrare meglio ogni nota.

Questo mi ha convinto ad ordinare anche due “tour mute” una per la Fa ed una per le mie tube contrabbasse ( Melton “Baer” in do e “Fafner” in Sib).

Penso che la “tour mute” per tuba in do sia una specie di prototipo che ha costruito su mia richiesta, ma il risultato è eccellente.

Mi trovo meglio a suonare con queste sordine rispetto alla practice mute e posso suonare ogni cosa senza problemi: pianissimo, fortissimo, legato, articolato, registro acuto e registro grave.

Il suono di queste tour mute, usate come sordine da studio, si sente un po’ di più rispetto alla practice, ma ci si può suonare veramente tutto, dalle cose più facili alle più difficili, questo mi permette di usarle anche durante un’intera sessione di studio.

Il suono, quando sono usate come straight, è molto bello, non molto metallico ma uguale in tutti i registri, con un’intonazione perfetta e con un’emissione molto spontanea.

Suonare con una sordina non è mai stato così facile.

Come accessori di queste sordine ci sono: tre mollette con delle gomme di spessore differente che permettono di scegliere suoni diversi, e due anelli in materiale fonoassorbente da applicare alla sordina per usarla come sordina da studio, anche qui i diversi anelli servono per scegliere quanto attutire il suono della nostra tuba.

L’ultimo pregio di queste sordine è che si possono smontare in due pezzi che vanno l’uno dentro l’altro, e si possono quindi inserire all’interno della campana della tuba, questa può essere un’ottima soluzione per liberi professionisti, solisti o per gruppi da camera.

Studiare con la sordina, oltre che non disturbare i vicini, ci da un diverso approccio con lo strumento, ed un diverso approccio significa anche diversi stimoli, in questo modo si può arricchire il nostro modo di suonare: suono, centratura, intonazione, legato ed articolazione possono migliorare, non farlo potrebbe voler dire non usufruire di questi miglioramenti.

Suggerisco di scegliere le sordine come scegliereste il vostro strumento o il vostro bocchino e non solamente come una cosa che siamo costretti ad avere, anche questo fa parte del nostro bagaglio professionale.

Simone Mantia: From our roots our future begins

The italian version of this post wants to be a sort of national anthem,

because the musical situation in Italy (but as I can see in newspapers also in other cuntry) is very sad, the problems could be many, last but not least the economic crisis, but despite this there are still dreamers, braves that decide to start a musical career without worrying about what will be, because when one beleives in a dream is certain the sooner or later will come true.

I found it reading an article in the International Tuba Euphonium Association Journal (ITEA Journal) on the Simone Mantia Collection.

Was born in Palermo (Sicily) and immigrated with his family in USA in 1890.

He became later a legend of the Euphonium, but also with Trombone, playing with the most important bands and orchestras in New York.

You can read this article by Gretchen Renshaw about Simone Mantia in Vol 37 Number 3 Spring 2010 of the ITEA Journal.

Here is the part where the national anthem begins, so I can translate it in a way that can work for everybody:

In almost every nation, there have been and there are musicians with international reputation, musicians that have become legendary in country like USA, a country able to draw on the contribution that these figures give, doing extensive research , collections, contests dedicated to their name, retrieving historical records.

So my reccomendation is:

Don’t forget our musical roots and our culture.

I end the article with an auspice for my country (but can be extended to the whole world) to rivive a new renaissance trying to hold on.

The future belongs to those who still believe in their dreams.

Simone Mantia: dalle nostre radici inizia il nostro futuro

La vita musicale in Italia non sta vivendo i suoi momenti migliori, oramai è evidente per tutti, ci sono sempre meno concorsi e quando sembra che finalmente uno sia riuscito ad avere il tanto desiderato posto fisso…. scatta il blocco delle assunzioni da decreti come quello di Bondi (che si sono ripetuti nel corso degli ultimi quindici anni), anche i Conservatori hanno i loro problemi, con una riforma che ancora nessuno ha capito se sia entrata in vigore o meno, gli studenti che chiedono: ma come funziona il nuovo ordinamento? Risposta: bohhh!!!

Ed anche qui il problema del precariato ad oltranza.

Nonostante questo però, ci sono ancora dei sognatori, dei coraggiosi che decidono di intraprendere la carriera del musicista, senza preoccuparsi di quello che sarà, perché quando uno crede in un sogno ha la certezza che prima o poi si avvererà.

Gli esami d’ammissione sono uno strumento indispensabile per cercare di individuare gli studenti con più talento, ma quali sono i requisiti fondamentali che uno studente dovrebbe possedere per diventare un ottimo musicista?

Le risposte a questa domanda potrebbero essere molte, per quanto mi riguarda sto sempre di più rivalutando l’importanza della prova di “orecchio musicale”.

Avere un buon orecchio, quindi essere in grado di riprodurre cantando una linea melodica o anche semplicemente un suono, è un passaggio chiave per riuscire in seguito a lavorare in maniera approfondita sulla produzione del suono con il bocchino.

Gli studenti che non riescono a cantare con un’intonazione impeccabile, difficilmente riusciranno a mantenere dei suoni stabili e solidi con il bocchino, rendendo così molto più faticosa e laboriosa la soluzione dei problemi con lo strumento.

Emettere una vibrazione con il bocchino o cantare una nota richiedono lo stesso processo mentale, vale a dire pensare l’altezza del suono che vogliamo riprodurre; quando sbagliamo (“scrocchiamo”) una nota, uno dei fattori che possono aver contribuito a quest’esito è proprio il fatto di non avere in testa l’altezza della nota in questione, questo capita molto spesso nei principianti che non hanno ancora molta dimestichezza con lo strumento, ma anche i professionisti non sono esenti, specialmente in quelle composizioni orchestrali dove ci sono molte battute d’aspetto e poi si deve attaccare una nota acuta.

Che fare allora?

Per quello che riguarda gli studenti, se durante la prova d’esame dimostrano un buon orecchio, basterà in seguito stimolarli a cantare molto i brani che dovranno eseguire con lo strumento, alternando canto, vibrazione con il bocchino, esecuzione allo strumento;

A quelli che hanno seri problemi, chiedo di cantare all’inizio una nota singola del registro centrale, se non riescono a centrare perfettamente l’intonazione, gli suggerisco di immaginare di avere un sintonizzatore radio in mano, e di cambiare l’intonazione della propria voce seguendo il movimento della mano finché non si sintonizzano sulla frequenza giusta.

Questo processo può richiedere anche molti mesi di studio, una vera e propria fisioterapia applicata al nostro sistema uditivo, ma una volta risolto il problema ci si può finalmente dedicare allo stadio successivo:

Entrance examinations at the Conservatory:

The entrance examinations are an essential tool to try to identify students with more talent, but what are the basic requirements that a student should possess to become a excellent musician?

The answers to this question could be many, from my side I am increasingly re-evaluating the importance of the "musical ear" test.

have a “good ear”, then be able to sing a melodic line or even just a sound, is a key step to be able later to work in depth on the production of the sound (vibration) with the mouthpiece.

Students who can not sing with impeccable intonation, difficultly will be able to mantain a steady and strong sound with the mouthpiece, making

much more difficult the solution of the problems with the instrument.

Producing a vibration with the lips or sing a note requires the same mental process, that is think the pitch we want to play; when we miss a note one of the factors that may have contributed to this outcome is the fact of not having in mind the pitch of the note in question.

This happens very often in beginners who have not much familiarity with the instrument, , but also professionals are not exempt especially in those orchestral compositions with many bar's rests and then must play a high note.

What to do then?

For what concern students, if during the examinations they show a “good ear” we should encourage them to sing alot the music that will must play alternating singing, buzzing and performing on the instrument.

To those who have serious problems, I ask to sing at first only one note on the mid range, if they fail to hit the perfect pitch, I suggest to imagine having a radio tuner in hand, and change the pitch of the voice following the movement of the hand until tune the right frequency.

This process can take many months of practice, a real physical therapy applied to our auditory system, but once solved the problem we can finally go through the next step:

production of a healthy and even vibration in all register.

Ciao a tutti,

Le vacanze stanno finendo un pò per tutti, ed è tempo di ricominciare ad organizzare le idee e prepararsi per un nuovo anno di lavoro e di studio;

Così anch'io ho deciso di intraprendere questa nuova avventura:

ho creato questo blog per condividere in maniera più approfondita informazioni, video, foto, gli argomenti potranno essere vari, e spero che siate anche voi a suggerirmeli.

Si potrà parlare di equipaggiamenti ( strumenti, bocchini, custodie....), dei vari aspetti della tecnica strumentale, dell'interpretazione musicale, di come preparare un piano di studio, come prepararsi ad un concorso solistico o in orchestra, come prepararsi per un concerto da solista o per un concerto impegnativo in orchestra... insomma tutto quello che può riguardare la vita di un musicista.
