The Hike to Faneque in Gran Canaria

We hiked to the top of the highest cliff in Gran Canaria to photograph the island's most spectacular views. Normally you need professional climbing gear to get there but a good friend showed us a back route used by shepherds. The trail is too dangerous for us to give exact details of the route but here are some of our photos.

During our epic seven island photo assignment we were lucky enough to stay at the Sands Beach Hotel in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote. A great place full of photogenic corners and the only place I know where every guest has a dragon tree on their patio.

I snapped this swimmer just after dawn in the Sand's 25 metre training pool. It was taken using natural light with no flash or reflector.

The Giant Gran Canaria Lizard, Gallotia simonyi stehlini

This is Gallotia simonyi stehlini, the Giant Gran Canaria lizard. It gets up to 80 cm long, lives only on Gran Canaria island, and is the largest true lizard in the world.

This one had fallen into an old swimming pool so I photographed him against the white paint before fishing him out and releasing him.

Starfish on the beach

Natural light in the late afternoon with a bit of fill flash to even up the shadows under the starfish. Beach photography doesn't all have to happen at dawn and dusk. The blues, yellows and greens of the sea and sand come up best with a polariser and some nice sunshine. The trick is to get out of the way of the wave before it hits you!
