Hi Alex fans. Sorry for being so tardy with my review/recap and THANKS from the bottom of my heart for all the concern when I dropped off the radar. I am well, as is my family, life just got in the way. The love of my life had a birthday AND he is finally letting me convert him to vegetarianism so I have been in the kitchen all week trying to convince him that all is not lost. 

As usual this is a full recap and review so if you do not want to see spoilers avert your eyes now.

Where We Lie begins with Lisa Reed responding to the scene of an amusement park accident. A boy named Dylan was crushed under rubble when a ride malfunctions and breaks down. The weight of the metal on top of him is crushing him and his leg is broken. Lisa stays with him until they manage to extract him, all the while looking at his mangled leg and getting emotional.

Dr. Andy sees him upon arrival and does his surgery where they find that his pulmonary artery is shredded and they remove one his lungs in order to save his life. He explains to Dylan’s mom after surgery that they are waiting to assess his condition, as his heart will still want to work hard enough to supply blood for both lungs even though one is gone. It is a wait and see game.

Another case for Three Rivers is that of a gymnast who fell during a competition. She is rushed to the ER only to be told that she overdosed on pain killers and has ruined her liver and needs new one. She inadvertently took too many pain pills trying to compete with fractured ribs from an earlier injury. I squeed with delight when I saw who her mom was being played by (Pam from True Blood!!!!). Sorry, had to shout out… love that show. Anyway both parents get tested to see if they would suitable  candidates to donate part of their liver.

Meanwhile Dr. Andy is saddened to see that Kuol is not doing as well anymore. He needs an L-VAD to keep his heart working until a donor heart can be found but since Kuol has no insurance or citizenship the money for the procedure is not available. Both Dr. Andy and Dr. Lee attempt to see what they can do to work around this. Dr. Lee ends up wining and dining a  rep from one of the companies who makes the L-VAD devices. She agrees to let Kuol have the surgery as a clinical trial if Dr. Lee agrees to endorse their products and attend conferences on their behalf. Dr. Lee is less than thrilled about pimping himself out but he agrees and he and the pretty rep conclude dinner earlier to get to know each other better.

Dr. Andy finds Lisa scrubbing Dylan’s shoes in a frenzy trying to remove the blood from them. Concerned, Dr, Andy tries to talk to her about it but Dr. Reed becomes angry and storms off.

Dr. Foster and Dr. Jordan tell the gymnast’s parents that neither of them is a match. What they don’t say right away is that the test revealed that the father is not the girls biological father. They hoped that one of the parents will come to them and help clear things up. The mother does come and explain that she was unaware of the paternity issue but that an affair she had while separated from her husband would explain it. She agrees to come clean and asks Dr. Jordon to help her track he former lover.

In a moment of guilt Dr. Jordan tells Miranda that she had an affair with her father and that they were in love. Miranda is angry about the deceit and leaves Dr. Jordan’s office in a huff.

The gymnast’s biological father is found but he does not want to donate his liver due to the risks and time away from work since he has his own family to support. He cannot bring himself to leave though and when the man who raised his daughter asks for his help he consents and donates.

Dylan wakes up and is doing well, much to Dr. Reed and Dr. Andy’s delight. Later on they meet up outside and Lisa shares that seeing Dylan’s bloody shoes triggered an emotional response in her. Her own sister died when she was 12 in an accident and Lisa remembered the bloody shoes.

This was poignant for me because I too was in a bad accident when I was 10ish I think. The most memorable thing for me is a shoe oddly enough. The car I was in flipped 4 times and when it stopped I looked over to the drivers seat where my mom should have been but she was gone. All that was there was her shoe on the gas pedal. Very haunting.. so I understood the shoe thing totally!

Dr. Andy and Dr. Reed share a hug and for a moment they look like they want to kiss. The attraction is there but no doubt Dr. Andy’s married status prevents them from exploring what is there. I hope we get to see more of their relationship soon! I really like Lisa, she is very caring and compassionate just like Andy.

Another awesome episode. Tears and serious laughter abounded.

This followed the stories of a police detective rushed to TR with chest pains, who also happens to be the partner of Dr. Andy’s wife, Rena. A cheating husband is mowed down by a truck as he tries to escape detection by his wife and he ends up being a liver donor. Mr. Boyle at Three Rivers is in serious liver failure with only days to live. He also happens to be the least favorite patient of the staff with his rude remarks and racial slurs.

In Alone Together we finally get to meet Dr. Andy’s wife and it is apparent quickly why they are having issues. They both have high stress and time intensive jobs… surgeon and cop. We get to see Dr. Andy’s love and concern for Rena as she comes into the hospital with her partner. Due to Andy’s quick thinking they prevent the man from bleeding out on the table and Dr. Andy does a quick procedure to graft a rupturing artery. When that works for only a short time he then has to go back into the ER to open his chest and suture the artery. Rena is incredibly proud of Andy and in love with him, she admits to partner’s soon-to-be wife but love might not be enough to salvage their marriage.

Dr. Foster goes to West Virginia to procure a liver only to find that they have to land on a high school football field with no ambulance waiting and a gate blocking their way. The sprinklers turn on the soak them as they scale the chain link fence. When they get to the hospital their bad luck continues as they find that the liver has been offered to another man at the same hospital where the liver is. The attending surgeon there refuses to wait for the issue to be cleared up and attempts to procure the organ for his patient immediately. Dr. Foster tries to physically block him from the operating room. Hospital staff try to pull her out of the way and she shakes them off only to accidentally hit the surgeon in his nose, breaking it. Dr. Foster is carted away by security. Later they resolve the issue and Dr. Foster is told the heart is hers.

Dr. Lee has the unfortunate job of prepping the recipient patient, Mr. Boyle, who makes remarks about Dr. Lee’s heritage, skin color, and affluent lifestyle. Finally after much needling Dr. Lee retorts that Mr. Boyle has no flowers in his room and that if her were nicer to people that might have been different. Mr. Boyle is outraged and relates to Dr. Lee that he spent 15 years with his gay lover only to be refused access to him in his dying days (AIDS).

Later on Dr. Jordon visits him to ask him to hang in there while they wait for the liver and Dr. Boyle expresses his sadness that his previous doctor (Miranda’s Dad) died. Dr. Jordan gets emotional herself and tears up as she speaks very highly of the late Dr. Foster.

In the operating room while under sedation Mr. Boyle announces to the operating staff that Dr. Jordan and the late Dr. Foster were lovers. The staff is speechless but Dr. Jordan reminds them that he is incoherent because he is sedated. It was a very funny moment!

Dr. Andy talks to his wife outside as the day closes and she has determined that marriage counseling won’t work for them (Andy asked her about it earlier that day). She insists that they both spend too much time working and that their work is the more important thing. She tells Andy he is a rockstar. Andy asks if she wants out because he wants children and she responds by saying that she doesn’t want to have kids they will both ignore but admits that she may be up to having kids with someone else if that man was up to meeting her demands. Andy is sad and a bit speechless after that.

Mr. Boyle wakes up with Dr. Lee sitting at his bedside informing him that the surgery was a success. Mr. Boyle see white orchids on the table next to his bed and Dr. Lee admits that they are from him. Mr. Boyle starts crying and tells Dr. Lee he greatly underestimated him. It was such a touching moment… one of my favorites this season.

Dr. Andy gets woken up by the young African heart transplant patient we met in episode 1. He stole Andy’s hotel room key earlier that day and he sneaks into his room to play Guitar Hero. At first Andy is angry and insists he leave but when the young man explains that he doesn’t want to be alone, Andy rubs his eyes awake and grabs the guitar saying he is going to show him how it is done. The scene closes as the two play the game and Dr. Andy is smiling in amazement and joking that that the game is so fun it should stay in his room  or else there might be no heart transplant. It was such a fun, goofy, great moment!

This was one of those episodes that CBS promised to fans and critics concerned about the show being ONLY about organ transplantation. CBS promised we would see general ER action too and this episode delivered. Once again I REALLY enjoyed this episode, even though I cried through most of it.

A bus with 42 passengers including a high school football team gets in an accident after the game. Three Rivers goes into overdrive as a large bulk of the patients are sent to them and the transplant doctors are needed to work the ER.

A 36 year old father of 3 is also staying at TR with only days to live. He and Dr. Andy hope that a heart can be found in time. To make matters even more difficult a suitable donor is found at their own hospital, a young football player who is pronounced brain dead, but that heart is matched to another city. 

A father struggles with his last words to his now deceased son, criticism of his performance at the game. The team manager is overcome with guilt that he switched seats with the same young man and walked away unscathed.

Dr. Lee goes above and beyond the call of duty by doing CPR for 20 minutes on an unresponsive woman only to have her be resuscitated at the last minute. He also manages to diagnose another young man who has mysterious symptoms, saving his life as well.

Dr. Foster takes it hard when one of the young football players dies under her care. She feels redeemed though when she flies out to the scene of the accident to track a missing player with the police. She is able to save him thanks to the quick thinking of Dr. Reed, who had the foresight to check if all the passengers were accounted for. The guilt ridden team manager must also feel proud since he was quick to identify the missing kid from hospital rosters… ironically the same kid who was bullying him on the bus. I think that bully may have learned an important lesson there.

Ryan makes a BIG mistake by telling the wife of a patient that they have found him a heart before he tells Dr. Andy. Since they have no procurement team available to go get the heart it looks like they may have to pass it up. In anger Dr. Andy orders Ryan to find a way to fix this mess and finally Ryan is able to find a way by using Dr. Andy’s friend Dr. Gonzo (who was played by the real life doctor that Dr. Andy is based on).

I found this episode to be very suspenseful and dramatic. The music they had playing in the background managed to send me into tears every 5 minutes I swear. It also made me go and hug and kiss my loved ones. The idea that your yelling at or criticising one of them could be the last thing they know in this world is just so painful… it reminds us to be good to our family… ALWAYS. I was glued to my screen for the entire episode… I just HAD to know what was going to happen. To me that means the show and the actors did the job well.

THIS was an awesome episode. Honestly… the people who claim the show is so bad … critics, fans, anyone … can go suck wax fruit… as my son would say. LOL.

The primary focus of the show was on two teenage patients who need heart transplants. They are the Romeo and Juliet of the hospital… doomed and in love. The young man, Scott Becker, is a former alcoholic and drug addict and he has been clean 6 months in order to be listed for a transplant. Finally, in this episode, he gets listed. This is due in large part to the fact that Dr. Andy goes to bat for him.

And seriously.. where did they get the bedding that Brenda had (above).. I was drooling. I want it!

Other cases during this episode include the story of a young college student in Maine who arrives home after a night of partying to find her parents comatose from carbon monoxide poisoning. A 30 something lawyer is shot in a drive by and she undergoes surgery only to blame the hospital for time missed from court.

This episode was evenly split between focusing on Dr. Andy, Dr. Lee, and the two heart transplant patients. I found Dr. Andy’s interaction with Scott and Brenda to be very cute. We saw a young at heart Dr who really cares about his patients and wants to relate to them on their level while still doing his job.

Dr. Lee is one NICE stand in for Dr. Andy. Whenever Dr. Andy is not on the screen I am more than content to fill the void with Dr. Lee. These guys are two different flavors of the same delicious ice cream. I was smiling all night.

Dr. Lee flies to Maine to get a heart from one of the carbon monoxide victims, for Scott, in a miracle same day match up. While he is there he gets to know the daughter of the man and tries to comfort her in her moment of guilt that she wasn’t home. While he is in surgery he notices that the color of the blood is not consistent with simple carbon monoxide poisoning and he alerts the doctor who is still trying to resuscitate the mother. Due to Dr. Lee’s good eye the mother is saved and Dr. Lee stays with the family as the mom wakes up. It was very touching… I love Dr. Lee!

The lawyer who got shot really annoyed me for most of the episode. She was angry that Dr. Jordan saved her uterus instead of giving her a hysterectomy. This lengthened her recovery time and this made lawyer lady mad instead of grateful. While she was fighting for a truly good cause.. she was a jerk to Dr. Jordan and I just wanted to slap her. Thankfully Dr. Jordan was nicer than I would have been and managed to make peace with her.

Scott (Romeo) takes off during pre surgery prep and no one can find him. It is too late to give someone else the heart so Andy has to track him down before the heart goes to waste and he blows his last chance to get a new heart. Dr. Andy finds him on the roof, scared of not being able to stay clean and be worthy of a second chance. He also doesn’t want to get a new heart when Brenda (Juliet) still doesn’t have one. Dr. Andy convinces him to accept the heart. All goes well and Scott and Brenda hold hands as they sleep, after Scott comes out of surgery. I was a big ball of tears by this point. I love Dr. Andy!

It was a VERY good episode and if Three Rivers is given half a chance it is a good sign of what a wonderful series this could be.
